Since upgrading to PS CS6 I too frequently get the following message when yrying to open a document:
"Could not complete you request because it is not a valid Photoshop document". This never happened in CS5 and this is the 3rd or 4th time in CS6. The documents are quite simple. Only a few layers - just slightly adjusted photo graphs.

That happens when the file is corrupted, or you have the wrong file extension on the file (telling photoshop that it is a different type of file than it really is).

The file was corrupted somewhere along the way (assuming it was still readable on the Macintosh).
The platforms don't matter, but you still need file transfer that doesn't corrupt files...

I have just installed Lightroom 12.1 with all current updates on W7 64bit and now cannot open the Nikon D5200 raw (NEF) files. I get the message: "Could not complete your request because it is the wrong kind of document" although they open successfully in Camera RAW on Vista 64bit PC with the same version of Elements. In order to work with them, I have had to convert to DNG and open in Photoshop CS5, which doesn't support D5200 RAW (NEF version).
This is causing me a serious problem because I need to migrate all of my work to the new W7 system.

That was the exact wording of the message, and I tried many times with many NEF files; but I just went back to the PC after entering the Forum question and everything works fine. The NEF files open from both my D5000 and the D5200. The pc wasn’t re-booted in the mean time, so I really don’t understand why it works now and didn’t 15 min’s ago!
I’m sorry to have disturbed you – maybe I should just have gone to lunch and tried again later. – I am a computer specialist/consultant, by the way, so I do know what I’m talking about.

i am using CS 5 . PSD files are from different sources. some are saved by me and some are from INTERNET . all files was working fine 3 weeks ago .
i moved them to external hard drive.I installed window 7 and moved all files from hard disk to My PC ( there was no error while moving files from HD to PC)
Now when i try to open it shows "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop document"?

It is only showing as a psd file in Windows, because it merely happens to have the extension ".psd". That does not mean that the file is an actual Photoshop file.
You could rename it to a file with a zip extension, and Windows would think it is an archive.
The extension means nothing unless the actual file data is written as a psd. And in this case it is not. You have file that is NOT a psd, with a file extension ".psd".

I've been getting the "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop document." error in one of my PSDs.
Here are just some notes:
The original file type is .psd, not a tiff whatsoever, and the file extension is purely myfilename.psd, not other random weird name

Very well. Try this with your Mac:
Open "new.psd" in Preview
File > Save
new.psd becomes new.png If the extension was correct, Preview would not have changed it.
it now opens in Photoshop You can download it here. ("Save image As...)
Simply put, you had the wrong extension.

Okay, I just talked to the person that originated the document.
When this usually happens to me, it's because I've done something stupid like saved a .jpeg as a .psd. So that's what I tried. I tried a few other extensions as well, so I thought that it was not an extension problem. Well, the originator told me it had originally been a TIFF, which was the ONE FILE EXTENSION I DIDN'T TRY. :\
Anyway, that fixed it. Usually this error indicates either a corrupt file or the wrong extension, just in case anyone ever digs this convo up later.

First go to the editor preferences>general and click this button, then restart the editor and try again. If that doesn't do it, more info, like your version of PSE and your operating system:

I clicked on one of the existing files to copy the file name in the Save As dialog to make it easier to name the new file I was saving, but I didn't realize it was changing the file extention from ".tif" to ".psd" as well. The older MacOS (version 9 and earlier) didn't rely on file extensions fo identifying file types, so it didn't hit me right away that this would be the problem. When I changed the incorrect .psd file extension to .tiff, the files opened in Photoshop just fine.
SO... if you run into this "Not a valid Photoshop document" error, try figuring out if it's actually another file type (.jpg, .tif, .png, etc) by either getting the file info from another program or just experimenting with different file extensions. Chances are good that your file isn't actually corrupt, but just named improperly!

PSE 9.0 error: ".....not a valid photoshop document"

Platform is XP Pro...camera is Canon compact digital.
I downloaded photos to desktop folder. PSE allowed me to open the first 3 photos from the folder to edit, then I got the above error message.
However, when I right click on the photo in the desktopp folder to "open with Photoshop Elements" the PSE 9.0 editor opened all the photos.

I created a Photoshop CC file yesterday. Can't open it today. Says "not a valid Photoshop document." Get info shows that it is a Photoshop CC file and the extension is .psd.

'not a valid photoshop document' when I try and overlay an image on photoshop.. help!!!

I downloaded jpeg files from google drive. As far as I know they are not corrupted and when I used them on the newest version of photoshop they worked. What I am trying to do is place images next to one another. Everytime I try and do this a notice comes up saying 'it is not a valid photoshop document'. I have tried changing the jpg to photoshop format pdf and also opening them as photoshop files - I dont know what else I can do and my photography deadline is tomorrow for my final edits!

Without having access to the file that you are working with I would not know how to help. There can be many factors involved that are giving you grief. Are you on PC or Mac? There are many here that are more savvy with the nuances and problematic issues with Ps than I.
