Could not initalize photshop because the file is locked.?

Hi there -
Recently I started getting this message on Photoshop CS3 "could not initalize photshop because the file is locked. "? Photoshop just doesn't open anymore... I check the files and its not locked and I'm the main user... What to do... All the other Adobe products are fine...
Ugh.
thanks!

I have the same problem and don't know what to do either.
I installed the 10.5.1 upgrade, ran DiskWarrior 4, then allowed Adobe to install a Photoshop CS3 upgrade (240mb) and Photoshop CS3 won't start up.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop CS3 and have the same problem.

  • Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked

I have the problem where you get the Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked, where the solution was to fix the properties in the jpg. I did that and tried the Ctrl-Alt-Shft thing too. I pressed them in time and got the message to delete the settings. When I click yes, I still get the "file locked" message. If it is the scratch disk setting problem, I can't get PS open to change it. This problem started when I was opening a locked jpg from a relative. (Now none of my previous pics will open either). Any other ideas other than these that are already listed in the forums? Thanks for any help.
Technical: Windows XP 5.1, HP7680, Photoshop CS2, 2g ram, more than enough work drives. (no Vista)
Sequence of events: 1) recd a jpg from a relative in an email and saved it to hard drive. 2) with Photoshop unopened, I rt clkd on the jpg and chose "open with CS2". 3) PS started loading and then stopped with the "file locked" msg. Clkd on OK and PS closed. 4) tried to open PS from the shortcut (and from explorer) and got same result. 5) researched the problem and then used the Ctrl-Alt-Shft approach, got the window that asks to "delete settings" and chose ok, PS closed again. 6) went to the jpg and displayed properties and saw "This file came from another computer and might be locked....", so I clicked "unblock". 7) retried step 2, then 4 with same results. 7) tried to open an old jpg with step 2 and same result (got file locked msg). 8) no longer can bring up the "delete settings" window with the the Ctrl-Alt-Shft approach as it looks like it deleted the settings the 1st time.
    Any ideas???? Thanks again.

    Bob,
I do not know why a locked JPG would mess up PS. I could see if you always tried to launch PS, by dbl-clicking on the JPG in Windows Explorer, but not from your Desktop shortcut, or from the PS.exe file.
For the locked file, there is a freeware utility, Unlocker. I do not have a URL handy, but Google should find it for you. It has worked on some network assets, that seemed to lock up on me.
Good luck, though this might not address your PS launch issue.

  • When I close Photoshop CS6, the following message appears: "Could not save Preferences because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file.

When I quit Photoshop CS6, the following message appears:
" Could not save Preferences because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to access the file. If I try to change the Workspace in PS6 from Essentials to any other Workspace, the following messsage appears:
"Could not apply the workspace because the file is locked, you do not have necessary access permissions, or another program is using the file. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to ensure the file is unlocked and you have permission to access the file. I have checked the Sharing and Permissions section of the "Get Info" panel accessed from the Finder and I have set Read and Write Privileges for my user account for Photoshop CS6. System and Admin are also set to Read and Write.
I have a MacBook Pro with OS X Version 10.9.5 and have all available updates for Photoshop CS6, Lightroom 5 and Bridge CS6.
I tried uninstalling the program and downloading it again and reinstalling, but nothing changed.
    Can you help?
    Thanks,

Every time I launch Photoshop I have to reload third party extensions, and re-do preferences settings.

Solved it after 8 hours of trying.
Hold down "Command" "option" and "shift" keys and open Photoshop. It will ask if you want to delete settings. Say Yes. You will have to reset everything but it clears the problem away instantly.

  • Photoshop CS 5.5 - "Could not save [filename] because the file is locked..........."

    Hi,
We have a few iMacs here all running 10.8.4 - we have PhotoShop CS 5.5 and all the artwork etc is saved on a shared server ( Windows 2008 r2)   and we are forever getting these problems......
Only in photoshop we get the following error message......
"Could not save [filename] because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privilege. Use the 'Get info' command in the finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders"
Can't see this been an access issue so really don't know whats causing this other than the fact it's just server based...
    Please please please somebody help.

I have been hqving this issue on windows after I upgraded to internet explorer 10 and using outlook (hotmail.com) to attach images to an email.
After a file saved via photoshop (i assum any programe not just photoshop will cause this problem) is attached in outlook to an email, IE10 will not let go of that file.  meaning if you update the image in Photoshop and try and save over the existing jpg you previously attached it will give this error, file locked or file permissions needed etc.
Just posting this info incase you are using email to attach files and then getting these permisssion problems.
I work around it by closing the outlook browser tab (the email), so it lets go of the file, I can then save ontop of the file no problem, I then open outlook as needed.

  • CS2/W8 - Could not initialize photoshop because the file is locked

I just upgraded to Windows 8 64 bit last night.  I had been running Cs2 just fine on Windows 7 64 bit for a few years now.   In fact I used it last week.  Now after the upgrade is complete, I get this error message when I try to launch CS2:
Could not initialize photoshop because the file is locked. use the properties command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file.
Of course, there is no mention of which file is locked.
I tried a repair install, it didnt help, same error.

HAve you tried resetting preferences?  Start PS and IMMEDIATELY hold down the shift ctrl alt keys.  Should get a reset window if fast enough.

  • Error: "could not initialize photoshop because the file is locked..."

"... user the'properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file"
    Hi,
I've allready read a lot about this, but I can't finde the answer :S
    Why can't I find it?
I use Windows 7, all the fixes are for XP or MAC. Ctrl+Alt+Shift won't help. I get the properties menu, not the prompt that asks me to delete/reset some files.
Does anyone know how I can solve this?
== Since when do I get this message? ==
Since 1hour, I pulled out 1gb RAM out of my pc, and inserted 2gb. Now I have 3gb RAM. And now I have the error. I restarted my pc for 4 times and I ran the program as admin.
It works as long as I'm admin, but I don't want to be admin when I'm working with it because that could cause a lot of problems.
I tried if other programs had the same problems but Adobe Fireworks works fine, InDesign and Illustrator works fine too.
    Please help!?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jelmer

But with Ctrl+Alt+Shift you reset, you get a prompt popup, wich asks you to reset your prefs. I clicked yes, like you said. The problem is still there
this text is in the message: 'Delte the Adobe Photoshop settings file?' | 'Yes' | 'No'
It's so weird, I added 1gb extra RAM and now it won't work? wtf..? :S
Could it have to do something with my settings?
(Loook @ the Scratch Disks, I have read a lot about that, could it have to do something with that? Adobe Photoshop is installed on in F:\Programs\Adobe CS3\Adobe Photoshop

  • IPhoto9: "library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."

Can please anyone help me with this issue.
After upgrading from iPhoto8 to iPhoto9 my library won't open anymore. I have stored all my pictures on a NAS (Buffalo Link Station Duo). It all worked fine but since upgrading to iPhoto9 I do have the following problem:
When opening iPhoto I receive a message that the library needs to be updated. I assume that iPhoto should just do this sort of automatically in order to upgrade to iPhoto9.However, next message I receive then is
"The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."
Apple support so far does not seem to be able to solve my issue. Anyone else having had the same issue and having a solution to this?
Thanks a lot for your help.

    There is no solution.
IPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. While you have been lucky to date, many folks with a library on a NAS found that it worked for a while and then the problems started.
Workaround: Put the Library on a Disk Image formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and store that on the NAS. But the real solution is to use a properly formatted disk for the Library.

  • What is the best way to copy aperture library on to external hard drive? I am getting a message that say's "There was an error opening the database. The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported".

What is the best way to copy aperture library on to external hard drive? I am getting a message that say's "There was an error opening the database. The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported". What does that mean? I am trying to drag libraries (with metadata) to external HD...wondering what the best way to do that is?

    How is the drive attached?
Can you open large files on the drive with other programs?
Are you running any drive compression or acceleration programs (some drives arrive with these installed)?
Can you reformat the drive and try again?
    Hi Kirby,
I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.

  • How do I fix Camera Raw in CS6? I get "Could not complete request because the file was not found"

How do I fix my Camera Raw in Photoshop CS6? I tried to view an NEF file in CS6, but it said I had to update my Camera Raw to 7.3 (I had 7.0). I went online and the only thing I could find was to download 8.6 so I started with that, and installed something and it didn't work, and then it told me I couldn't download 8.6 because my OS X is not 10.7 ( I have 10.6.8). Now when I go back into photoshop it gives me this error "Could not complete request because the file was not found" and I cant open any jpegs in photoshop.  I have tried shutting down my computer, deleting caches, and uninstalling photoshop and reinstalling it. Still no luck. Any idea how I can fix this?

Follow these instructions to manually update your ACR plug-in to ACR 8.3, which was the last version compatible with your OS:

  • Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is empty.

I tried to start Photoshop 5.1 64bit today, and it shows the blue intro screen with the reading and loading, and then it goes to a popup error message that reads, "Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is empty." I can run the 32bit version fine, but I would prefer to use the 64bit version. I am running Windows 64bit Ultimate. I have been having issues here and there with CS5.5 on this computer. I ran CS4 fine for the last few years, but since after the upgrade, things have been acting weird. About two weeks ago, InDesign refused to work, so I did a reinstall. Then, two days later, I was having other issues, so I did another reinstall. Before that, Illustrator was having issues, so I had to copy programs files from my office computer to my home computer to make it work. I am starting to wonder if my hard drive is going out. Is there an Adobe fix for just Photoshop? I have the CS5.5 installation DVDs here. I tried copying the Photoshop.exe from my office computer to my home computer and replacing it, but it didn't work either.
What do you guys recommend? Thanks!

I am starting to wonder if my hard drive is going out.
Not necessarily, but it could be hopelessly fragmented and have per-sector damage. Run your disk maintenance tools from the drive's property tab and clean out unnecessary temp files, too.

  • Could not save preferences because the file could not be found (Windows) then Error 1 on PS,AE,PR,ID

I was trying out Photoshop, everything was running fine then one day when I close it I get an error:
"Could not save preferences because the file could not be found..."
Now when I boot it I get the Configuration Error 1.
After Effects still boots, but it reset all my preferences there. For example the workplace layout was reset, all my saved Output presets were removed and my memory-cache and performance settings were reset again.
Premiere and InDesign get the error too and won't boot.
This is the second time it has happened, I'll try wiping every Adobe program and reinstalling all over again, but it had run fine before for a while and it randomly happened.
Any idea how to fix this?

Nope I havent touched the Documents folder.
Forgot to mention that I'm on Windows 7
