  • PS CS4 could not save because the file is locked

I saw this post, my problem is very similar, but this solution does not solve my problem:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2121454#2121454
Everytime I try to save a photoshop file I get the "Could not save becasue this file is locked" -- and then I go to save again and it does save, becasue the file has disappeared from where I had originally saved it!
This is VERY irritating, as it is not happening EVERY time I try to save a photoshop file.
In reference to the previous post about this, I do not use Spotlight, and often I do not have anything else open when working on these photoshop files.
I am using CS4, and this occurs when saving files both on and off a server.
I am afraid I will at some point end up losing a file.
    Any suggestions?

No anti-virus software (they cause far more problems than they solve, at least on a semi-secure network), I don't leave Bridge running. iTunes is running, so is InerTrak (time tracking software)... so it has to be Spotlight or Time Machine unless Activity Monitor will lock files. Or it could be Quicksilver, which creates indices like Spotlight.
First thing I'm doing is adding all my hard drives to "Prevent Spotlight from searching these locations" and we'll see if this comes up again.
Could it be the Finder? Does the Finder lock the file while reading the thumbnail?
I'm surprised that there's no way to tell what process has locked the file.
OK, last bit: Why doesn't Photoshop lock the file when it's open so that other programs won't open it?

  • PSCS4 could not save because the file is locked or was left open

    Hello—
I'm getting this error a lot, maybe once out of every dozen attempts to save. This occurs on files that are indeed open... because I've opened them in Photoshop! I open the file, make a change, hit CMD-S and get this message.
The finder's info panel says that I have permission to read and write the file.
This happens with multiple file types, not just one file.
All my work is done locally. Not trying to load or save across a network or any such.
Any guesses what might be going on? Obviously it's easy to work around. I "Save As" and give it a new name, then later delete the old file and rename the new one. Still, it's annoying, especially after waiting 10 minutes for a save to complete on a large file, then having to start over.
    Thanks in advance!
    Steve

  • InD blocking Ps to save a file / Could not save * because the file is already in use error

Many users have reported a  Photoshop Could not save * because the file is already in use error in many different circumstances.
I place raw jpgs in InDesign document, then open them in Photoshop via Edit original order to adjust them. On random occasions Ps gives me that annoying error. So i found a little trick to avoid saving that image under a different name and relinking it plus reloading Ps since the error repeats on other pictures to.
All you have to do is: when Ps gives error, (Cmd-Tab) switch to InD, directly select the worked jpg in image frame (one that you try to save in Ps)  and simply move it left-right (or move it and Undo). Now you can save it without problem.

JPEG is a "lossy" compression format. Every time you save as jpeg you recompress and throw away a little more information. In addition, jpeg does not support transparency or layers, both very useful features for woring with images. For example, you can add an adjustment layer in Photoshop to do your adjustments non-destructively for may of the things that you can do using Image > Adjustments... which will change your pixel data permanently. Throw away an adjustment layer and you image data is untouched. Also, ID allows you to place a layered image and control layer visibility from within ID, making it possible to multi-purpose a single file by showing or hiding various layers.

purchased a song from iTunes, i tried to transfer it to my itouch, but i received an error "iTunes could not copy because the file could not be converted". how do i convert the song (well, i thought it will automatically be converted)?

    Problem Fixed:
Remove the song from your itunes library, then go to the itunes store and try to download it again. It will say something like "this song has already been purchased, would you like to download it again for free?". Click yes, and it will download again. This worked for me, hope it helped

  • Could not save because the file is already in use....

For the last couple of days I have gotten this error message several times.  It seems it only happens when I do a 'Photo Merge' initiated in Bridge.
I have Adobe CS4 Extended on Vista.
In my 18 years of working with PS I have never gotten this before.  I have tried everything, closing all applications, except PS, changing the file name, changing the file extension, nothing works.
I have also researched this topic in the forums.  They pertain mostly to Apple computers, and I have not seen a satisfactory solution, explanation, or 'workaround.'
I sure hope hope somebody can help me with this.
    Many thanks!

    Hi
I have run into this a couple of times, though not in a while.
I believe I got around it by selecting Save AS and saving the file with a new name i.e. Panorama B.tif or something to that effect.
That seemed to convince it that I wasn't trying to save something that was in use someplace else.

  • "Could not complete because the file-format module cannot parse the file." How i solve this?

    The file is in .png

And what exactly? What PNG? From where? What system? What version of PS? You need to be much more specific.

  • Error on Windows 7 RC 64bit - "Could not save because the file is already in use or left open."

This is constantly happening when I try to save and replace a JPG in the same folder or save as a copy in the same folder. Sometimes it seems to happen when I even save to another folder, though I've also been able to workaround this by doing that (though it's inconvenient and messes with my folder structure).
A tmp file is saved successfully every time, and I can manually rename the tmp file to the desired filename (as another very inconvenient workaround).
I see on these Forums that this save error is somewhat common in Adobe products, but I don't see a report of this consistently happening on this particular platform. I appreciate it's a beta (RC) of Windows 7 and therefore may not be technically supported (yet?).
    Any ideas or fixes please?

Try resetting the editor preferences by pressign alt + ctrl + delete key on start and clicking edit on welcome screen.

I am trying to import developed images from LightRoom 5 Photoshop 6 for further editing.  I am receiving this message and the images will not open.....'Could not open scratch file because the file is locked, or you do not have necessary access permissions or another program is using the file.  Use the 'Properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file. How do I fix this?  I would greatly appreciate it if you would respond with terms and procedures that a computer ignorant user, such as me, will understand.   Thanks.

  • Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked

I have the problem where you get the Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked, where the solution was to fix the properties in the jpg. I did that and tried the Ctrl-Alt-Shft thing too. I pressed them in time and got the message to delete the settings. When I click yes, I still get the "file locked" message. If it is the scratch disk setting problem, I can't get PS open to change it. This problem started when I was opening a locked jpg from a relative. (Now none of my previous pics will open either). Any other ideas other than these that are already listed in the forums? Thanks for any help.
Technical: Windows XP 5.1, HP7680, Photoshop CS2, 2g ram, more than enough work drives. (no Vista)
Sequence of events: 1) recd a jpg from a relative in an email and saved it to hard drive. 2) with Photoshop unopened, I rt clkd on the jpg and chose "open with CS2". 3) PS started loading and then stopped with the "file locked" msg. Clkd on OK and PS closed. 4) tried to open PS from the shortcut (and from explorer) and got same result. 5) researched the problem and then used the Ctrl-Alt-Shft approach, got the window that asks to "delete settings" and chose ok, PS closed again. 6) went to the jpg and displayed properties and saw "This file came from another computer and might be locked....", so I clicked "unblock". 7) retried step 2, then 4 with same results. 7) tried to open an old jpg with step 2 and same result (got file locked msg). 8) no longer can bring up the "delete settings" window with the the Ctrl-Alt-Shft approach as it looks like it deleted the settings the 1st time.
    Any ideas???? Thanks again.

    Bob,
I do not know why a locked JPG would mess up PS. I could see if you always tried to launch PS, by dbl-clicking on the JPG in Windows Explorer, but not from your Desktop shortcut, or from the PS.exe file.
For the locked file, there is a freeware utility, Unlocker. I do not have a URL handy, but Google should find it for you. It has worked on some network assets, that seemed to lock up on me.
Good luck, though this might not address your PS launch issue.

  • Unable to start Photoshop CS6 - could not open a scratch file because the file is locked (Windows)

When I first installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 I was unable to run Photoshop or Bridge CS6.  Photoshop would give me an error about "could not open a scratch file because the file is locked.  If I ran either of these programs as an administrator they would run without issue, this led me to believe that there was a permission issue somewhere.  After some digging I found out the both Bridge and Photoshop try to create a temp file (similiar to Photoshop Temp2777223910092) on the c:\ drive of the computer.  In my case the user that I was logged in with did not have access to write to the root of the C:\ drive.  Note that you run the program as the administrator and change the scratch disk location as that changes the preference for the administrator user and not the user that you are currently logged in as.
To get around this issue I first had to give the user that I was logged on with write permissions to the root of the C:\ drive.  Next try and run Photoshop, you will get an error another error about the scratch disk and about and invalid or missing setting file.  To correct this you need to have run Photoshop as an administrator, next you can go to Users\Admin\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings and copy Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs and/or Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs to Users\<your logged in username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings.
Photoshop and bridge should now start up with no issues.
I hope that this can help others out there as this caused me a great deal of frustration when upgrading to CS6.

OK, here comes the explanation of what the scratch disk does and why it's optimal to have it on a physically separate internal drive (not partition!) other than your boot drive
I probably shouldn't say anything since it could complicate this thread, but the rules of thumb can be different under special circumstances when SSD is involved.
IF you have a LOT of empty space on your SSD-based system drive, then Photoshop can actually work great with it's scratch setting pointed at the system drive.  This is because a) SSD transfers are much faster than spinning hard drives and b) there's no seek time, so simultaneous transfers to/from scratch and swap files aren't devastating to performance, and you can see a net gain because of the increased I/O throughput over what's possible using a separate spinning drive for scratch.
But if you don't have a huge amount of free space (hundreds of GB) on the system SSD, it's definitely better to use a separate drive, as station_two has said.
Also, up to about a year or so ago, you had to try to severely limit write activity to your SSD drive, since you could actually wear them out by repeated high data write activity.  That's pretty much a non-issue now with the advent of things like the SandForce in-drive controller that does wear-leveling inside the drive.  Modern drives will last 10 years or more in normal typical use, without special consideration.
As it turns out, making a RAID array of SSDs is a great way to boost performance across the board, have bunches of free space, and ensure even the heaviest usage doesn't shorten the drive life.  I have done so, creating a 2 TB system drive C: made from 4 SSDs and Photoshop's swap file (and pretty much everything else) pointed to C:.  This system flies, and I can barely tell when Photoshop and/or Windows "goes virtual" and starts using its scratch/swap files heavily.  I don't even notice Photoshop auto-saves.
    Sorry for the SSD diversion.
    Back on topic:
Pretty much everyone who's successfully using a computer - Mac and PC users alike - comes to realize after a while that the task of integrating things on their computers and making everything work falls on THEM, not the developers of applications like Adobe.  Some applications pose unique challenges, but to think you can just throw up your hands and try to make it someone else's problem when something goes wrong simply isn't a viable strategy.  Maybe that's how things should be, but it's not how it is.
For those of you struggling to get Photoshop to run properly, bear in mind that it's on you to get things working.  It works for most folks.  It could be a configuration or setup choice you've made that may need revisiting, or some kind of restorative activity that you need to do, or even something very minor like clearing your Photoshop preferences, but it may well take your learning new things and doing things you didn't think you'd have to do to get back to where you can edit photos.  It's no one's problem but your own.
So let us here on the forum help you - when we say to do something, try it.  We're not here to jerk you around; we're users just like you who have already found the ways to make things work, and we'd like to help you do the same.

I get this error upon launching PS5: "could not open a scratch file because the file is locked or ou do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the 'properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file". The applicaiton will not launch.
Supporting information - I recently changed the scratch disk from C drive to D drive (the back up/restore drive). The application wont launch so I cant change it back to the C drive.
