Could not open ... could not unlink ...  /var/db/BootCache.playlist

In 10.5.7, on my QS 2002 Dual 1GHz, I keep getting this message.
Awhile ago, someone suggested I Trash this file
/var/db/BootCache.playlist,
thinking it would be regenerated next Startup.
Is there a Terminal command that I can use to accomplish this? Something that would signle my OS X, to regenerate this file next go 'round?
Here are the log entries I find troubling:
Jul 20 17:43:33 localhost com.apple.launchctl.System[2]: BootCacheControl: could not open /var/db/BootCache.playlist: No such file or directory
Jul 20 17:43:33 localhost com.apple.launchctl.System[2]: BootCacheControl: could not unlink playlist /var/db/BootCache.playlist: Unknown error: -1
I see this in a number of other threads, but have not located a solution.
Thanks.

Even though I didn't get "data" on the second command, I went on and did all three

-rw------- 1 root wheel 58716 Jul 22 10:00 /var/db/BootCache.playlist
Moonstone-Art-Studio:~ moonstoneartstudio$ file /var/db/BootCache.playlist

Duh!
I forgot that I was root when I tried this. Try again:
sudo file /var/db/BootCache.playlist
sudo BootCacheControl statistics
(don't understand the [code] ... [code] posting/reply request):
You need to put before and after the Terminal output, and the second one does not need the '/' which most of these formatting systems (eg HTML) require. Note these are 'curly' brackets, not square ones.

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Help!  /var/db/BootCaches.playlist 2:no such file or directory appeared; unable to start up

    I use a MacBook Pro, Mid-2009 version.
My problem started when I tried tweaking some system files via Terminal when I could no longer use Candy Bar for Mavericks. I followed the instructions here http://idevicedailys.com/os-x/howto-use-candybar-os-x-mavericks/ I was quite successful but not all of my icons changed so I downloaded the 10.9 patch for Candybar. The fix did not work, so I tried using the sudo nano /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist command again. Afterwards, I tried opening Candybar, but it would no longer open. I then restarted my Macbook, but it would no longer load into the desktop. What happens is that after loading, the cursor would show up, the screen would blink, and then the loading icon (the gray rotating thing) would show up again, and then the cursor appears. This happens again and again. At some point, the loading icon would just freeze.
I tried rebooting to safe mode, but it will not work. /var/db/BootCaches.playlist 2 cannot be found I tried accessing Terminal through the Startup Disk screen (the one you get to when you press cmd + r during reboot) but the sudo nano commands won't work anymore. Also, instead of nano, what I see in my Terminal is 'bash'
Is there still hope for my mac?
    Help is very much appreciated!

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then reinstall the OS.

  • /var/db/BootCaches.playlist 2:no such file or directory appeared after Mavericks update

    Hi all,
I have tried to upgrade my iMac 2009 running 10.6.8, 3.06GHZ, 4GB ram machine and hit upon a grey load up screen and nothing more after the update. I have worked back through everything I could find in these forums as the bellow:
    1. Completed all of the grey screen advice from Apple bar a full wipe and rebuild, but have left this as the last resort
    2. Launched again from back up and reloaded Mavericks only to get the same problem
    3. Tried to launch in Safe mode and the computer quits half way through the status bar and will not launch into Safe mode
    4. Corrected all disk permissions in Disk Utility
    5. Checked my EFI update and am running the latest version
    6. Tried resetting the NVRAM but computer will not work from the keyboard shortcuts
    7. Run Verbose mode where I could see the problem with loading Bootcache which produces the following script /var/db/BootCaches.playlist 2:no such file or directory
    8. Created a carbon copy backup also and am now considering a full wipe
I have updated to Mac Book Airs in the last few weeks, and after the computer auto restarts the program then moves to a new processing screen where it finalises writing script, this point never happened on my iMac and after it restarted it just hung on the grey screen with the Apple logo. It is definitely in the Bootcache problem as this is one of te last processes and matches the amount of time the computer starts working before it heads into the grey hanging screen of death. This is definitely something that mavericks script alters, moves or deletes as I have seen this problem littered across the forums as well as the in ability for Safe mode now to work.
I am back up and running 10.6.8 at current and downloading a new version of Mavericks (more fool me). It could be a drive corruption but am unsure, but the computer s working well on 10.6.8 and has done for a very long time. Has anyone solved this yet, as t s driving me crazy!!!
Any Jedi's out there, I would be most indebted to you!

    Hi all,
Well I thought I would re-post as have found a solution.
I created a bootable USB version of Mavericks using this article here which was very informative: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/apple-in-the-enterprise/how-to-create-a-bootabl e-usb-to-install-os-x-mavericks/
I then rebooted via it, this again caused the grey screen of death as I thought it would, from reboot to reach this screen I held the Option Button. Before I did this I took a cloned copy of the hard drive and also backed-up again to Time Machine. Have over 470GB of music, photos and films, so yes was being a little over precautious.
I then rebooted and went into recovery mode (Cmd and R) and erased my hard drive.
I then rebooted once again but booted from my Mavericks USB version now with a clean hard drive, and set-up completed as expected with no problems. Its working beautifully at current but am yet to migrate files using the migration assistant, but once I have the new Mavericks version of my machine backed-up I will complete the migration, fingers crossed!
A few days of pain, but was a good learning experience. It was more difficult than it should be to created a bootable USB, but luckily I had another mac to work on and a decent back-up drive.
    Hopefully helpful to others!

  • After update to 10.7.1 /var/db/BootCache.playlist is deleted

I have reloaded Lion server at least a dozen times and it keeps happening after I update to 10.7.1 /var/db/BootCache.playlist gets deleted. I dont know ifs its something I am doing wrong when setting up my server but this is getting crazy. I only host a website and use as email server for that website. Does anyone think it might be, I set up the Server HD as a sharepoint? This is the only thing I can think of? Has anyone else had this problem? I also change the greylisting feature using Terminal but I am changing no files near /var/db/. Any ideas cause 12 times of setting up a server is making me mad? Thanks!

solved my problem. looks like the file is there just not accessible?
got on the phone with Apple and did the following:
    - booted to Restore disk (Command + R on boot) and ran Repair Disk and Repair Permissions through Disk Utility (on the server OS HDD).
    - then went Apple --> Select Boot Disk --> Selected the server HDD --> Restart
after this i was able to boot up normally, but the Firmware update hadn't applied. before doing any more software updates i made a clone of my server on an external HDD using Disk Utility --> select server OS HDD --> Restore tab --> Destination: External HDD (note, you'll lose anything on the external drive)
after getting the clone i did the firmware update without a hitch.
unrelated to this, the fan on my Mac Mini was going full blast all the time. the fix was to pull out all the cords and let it rest for 30 seconds, then plug everything back in.
    hope this helps someone.

    Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
From the application's menu bar, select
    File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

  • UPC_F104 Entry not possible, var does not have replacement type user-spec.

On of my exit variable keeps issuing me the following message when selecting a value:
UPC_F104 Entry not possible, var does not have replacement type user-spec. vals
This exit variable is based on other variables (non-user specific). The indicator 'Restriction of values required by user' is flagged.
Any idea what might be the issue ?
    Thanks
    David

    David,
User exit variables won't work if there are multiple rows of values being derived incase 'Restriction of values required by user' is flagged.
Make sure that derivation of variable value is restricted to only one row.
if you have a need to derive multiple rows of values, simply uncheck the flag 'Restriction of values required by user' & you will be good to go.
    hope it helps.

  • "netcfg2 -a" does not remove "/var/run/daemons/net-profiles"

    hello!
i have found out, that a "netcgf2 -a" does not remove /var/run/daemons/net-profiles. after that i have to stop the net-profiles daemon by hand. i connect to networks with "netcfg2 <profile>", the net-profiles daemon will be started automatically by that command.
    is this an issue?
another problem i have is, that netcfg2 even cannot connect to a network automatically, if i have two networks with the same beginning:
for example: network a: foo; network b: foobar - when i want to connect to "foo" it uses the "foobar" profile, because the name of the profile file is listed before the name of the file from network a.
    bye iggy

The first thing: I thing netcfg2 should not touch anything in /var/run/daemons, since that's the job of scripts in /etc/rc.d/* It's the same for any daemon you run - if you kill it manually, not using /etc/rc.d/<whatever> stop, then you have to clean up /var/run/daemons/<whatever> yourself as well.
before connecting with netcfg2 there is no "net-profiles" in /var/run/daemons. after netcfg2 <profile> it is. after "netcfg2 -a" the file is still there, so it indicates net-profiles-daemon is still running.

    Hello,
How could you create a playlist that does not contain artist/album present in another playlist?
I do not even know if it is possible : in that case, do you have any alternatives?
Thank you very much for your answers.
    Regards,

    Match all rules...

    Playlist is Playlist 2
    or just...
    Match all rules;

Playlist is not Playlist1 (iPhone playlist)
I want that playlist to not contain artist/album from playlist (2).
Do you really want to match Artist/Album or do you simply want to show everything that is not in Playlist 2?
