Could Not Open Key Error over and over and over

Error Message- "Could Not Open Key HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp\CLSID"
Just got a new IPOD for Xmas but can't install Itunes. I think the problem is Quicktime. I have been searching in this discussion for people with the same problem and I have tried everything. I tried giving myself access in the registry editor but it won't let me. It says "Cannot save permission changes.......Access is denied." I tried deleting all the Quicktime files but it says "cannot delete files.....error while deleting." I have even tried the response to the 1400's error messages but nothing works. Also installing Quicktime by itself, same thing. Same error message over and over. Please help!!!!

I ve been getting this message over and over:

Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel
I have uninstalled all Apple soft and tryed to reinstall itunes 10.5, but there is no help. I run win 7 64 on toshiba notebook

Open regedit using "run as administrator".
    Go to the registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInstallerUserDataS-1-5-1 8Components
    ...and selected the folder DA42BC89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE8
(there are three folders with very similar names A,B & C you want the first one)
    Right click & choose Permissions
Click Advanced, and then the Owner tab
Type  (not administrators) in current owners field and check the box to replace the owner on subcontainer and volumes
Apply settings and then click Permissions tab. Once again, add  (not administrators) to the list of permission entries, then click edit and check all permission boxes. Also click the 2 bottom boxes concerning the inheritable permissions.
[Note: In my case I was a member of administrators and administrators was already set in all of the above settings - I've no idea why it needed to be set to my user rather than the administrator group, anyway it solved the problem for me]
    Click OK
Now back on the main permissions tab, add  in the user name window and then check full control and read checkboxes. Click OK.
On the menu bar click file > exit
But if u have the message pop up more then once then just make the permissions for the entier S-1-5-18Components folder

  • I am trying to download iTunes on to my laptap but I keep getting a "Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\ with a bunch of numbers and letters following.  I have uninstalled all the iTunes programs. I changed the Regedit but I still get the error?

I am trying to download iTunes to my laptop but I keep getting this "Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\ followed by a bunch of numbers and letters.  I have unistalled iTunes and all the other apple componants.  I also used followed this http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3581. But I am still getting the same "Could not open key:" error and it tells me that iTunes could not download.

You  could try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove all traces of any existing versions of Reader prior to installing the version you want and updating it as required.  This utility is no longer supported by Microsoft because it can conflict with Win 7, but you can still find it in sites like http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

  • Acrobat Pro won't install: Error 1402: Could not open key on install attempt

I've been stuck in install hell for the past week. Here's my issue: I have Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium and want to install it on a PC running MS Vista, but when I attempt an install, I cannot install Adobe Acrobat 8.
Reading the event viewer, I get the following type error:
Product: Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional -- Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\CLSID\{8AD0743E-113B-4E26-BA21-1E9A71098F41}\InprocSe rver32. System error 5. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
Here's the problem: I'm basically playing whack-a-mole. Each time I go into regedit to change the registry permission for the named folder and attempt to install again, I get a new error saying that the Adobe install software could not open some other key. Each install attempt takes 15-20 min, and I must have done this 20+ times over the past week.
I've done all the obvious things like uninstalling everything Adobe (including my browsers Flash plug-in), running the CS3Clean software, running Vista in selective start-up, running setup as an administrator, barking at the moon, ect.
All the affected permission issues some to reside in the CLSID folder, but there is no way for me to set the permissions there and have them apply to all the subfolders without getting some sort of "whatever, we do what we want" error.
I'm at my wits end here. I've posted this to the Adobe customer support page, and four days after the supposed 25 hour turn-around, I still have yet to hear from Adobe. Any help would certainly be appreciated.

i suggest a best way to solve this maan,
    follow this,
create a new administrator user on your xp,
log off current user n log on to new admin user,
    install yr program,
    and
log off this admin user n log on to previous user,
n continue to use yr installed program

  • Quicktime Error 1402 Could not open key (defaulticon)

When trying to install Quicktime 7 (standalone) I get the same error I have seen posted by so many others....Error 1402 Could not open key....
    HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\QUICKTIME.QT\DEFAULTICON
I have tried every suggestion by Apple, Microsoft, the discussion fourm, and everything I have found via a Google search.
When I use regedit to view the permissions for the Quicktime.qt folder (it's not expandable so I can't locate a defaultIcon folder), I can add new users (everyone) and give them full permissions but when I select OK I get a message that says "Unable to save permissions on quicktime.qt...Access is denied).
(I am the only computer user and I am using the administrator account).
    Note XP home addition.
    Thanks
    Anybody have any (new) ideas??????????

What happens when you delete the registry key or all the keys associated with QT?
This Microsoft article though claiming not to be for XP or 2000, has something interesting to say under Cause.

After removing any program I clear out the registry of left over keys from it. Just something I do. I find I can still miss some. This program Windows XP Manager is very good at finding what I miss, and can also defrag the registry. It will also back up the registry for you also. You might want to take a look at it, where you problem seems to stem from the registry.

Scroll down to Cleaner in the link on XP Manager, it explains what it does in the registry.

hmmm. okay, if you're currently just getting the "itunes has encountered an error ..." let's try the following technique.
    preliminaries
download and save a fresh copy of the itunes 6.0.1.3 installer to your hard drive. (eventually we're going to run the install from there rather than online.)
    iTunes 6.0.1.3 Installer
switch off any antivirus and antispyware applications prior to any uninstalls, installs or repair installs.
    uninstall
use the complete uninstall instructions given in the following document to remove your existing itunes and quicktime:
Troubleshooting iTunes, iPod Software, and QuickTime installation on Windows
... and if you run into problems on the uninstall, try using the Installer Cleanup utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
    reboot after uninstalling.
    reinstall
remember to switch off your antivirus and antispyware.
reinstall itunes using the 6.0.1.3 installer you downloaded previously.
if you get the "itunes has encountered a problem ..." error message again after that install, first check to see if your Quicktime will launch. if you get an error message when you try to launch quicktime, try using the following technique:
iTunes 6 for Windows unexpectedly quits when opened
keep us posted on your progress.

  • TS3299 Upgade error: Could not open key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Apple Inc.\Internet Services. Any advice?

During a standard iTunes upgrade to the latest version (11.1.4 for Windows Vista), the installation failed with the following error message: Could not open key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Apple Inc.\Internet Services. Does anyone have any advice as to how I can fix this and reinstall iTunes? When I try to open iTunes I get the following message: iTunes.exe. This application has failed to start because MSCVR80.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. When I try to run the installer I get the above error so I'm going round in circles!

Solved: I had somehow lost permission to access the HKEY above (or rather, its parent key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Apple Inc.) so I went to the registry editor and checked the 'Full Control' box for the key and the installer now works.
I used this site to fix the MSCVR80.dll error: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/msvcr80-dll-not-found-missing -error.htm

After following instructions for three different solutions that did NOT work; I found the solution that did work
on the support site for Syamntec.
Readers - Please, you must be VERY familiar with pc jargon and windows vernacular to accomplish the reset
of ALL the permissions in your registry.
Follow the ditrections below and pay attention to the notes for those running 64bit Win7.
Step one, back up the registry.
Step two, go to the MS KB: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-93cf -ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en and download the file that installs subinacl. It is an MSI file, and will do a quick install of a few Microsoft files.  Hint: Look in the folder listed below, "subinacle.exe" may already be there.
Step three, create a batch file (subinacle.bat) with the following commands:  (Use Notepad - copy & paste, not the red stuff)
cd /d "Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (only for 32bit/x86 machines)
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    subinacl /subdirectories %windir%\*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
    secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose
For 64bit machines substitute for first line of bat file:
                        cd /d "c:\program files (x86)\windows resource kits\tools"
Step four, run the batch file. Let it run until the Command Prompt screen closes, may take 30 minutes or more.
Step five, reboot the machine and run the install again.
Ladies and Gentlemen; this worked for me and allowed immediate installation of two application packages I had been trying for three months!  (Including ITunes 10.5)

  • Error 1402: Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE... During Installation

    Hello,
When I try to install LabView (v7.1 or v8.0) I get the following error:
"Error 1402: Could not open key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\LVDB.Application\CLSID. Verify that
you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support
    personnel."
I have full administrator privileges on my computer and I am able to
modify that key manually using the registry editor. When I click the
"Yes" button to continue the installation it will complete but then
when I launch LabView I get the following error:
"The requested feature is unavailable on "localhost"".
Can you help me get LabView up and running?
    Thanks,

The Adobe knowledgebase article actually pointed me in the right
direction and I was able to solve the issue. Thanks to all who gave
advise, you guys are the reason these forums work!
The error message was actually coming from the Microsoft Installer, not
from anything related to National Instruments. Also, ironically, what
the message said was spot on with one exception, while I personally had
access to the registry key, the installer didn’t. What I ended up doing
was going into the registry using regedit and setting the permissions
on the key in questions such that “Everyone” had full access. After
that I uninstalled LabView then reinstalled and it worked fine this
time. The step by step follows:
    1) Open the registry editor by selecting "Run" from the start menu and then typing in "regedit".
    2) Browse through the registry and select the entry mentioned in the error message.
    3) Choose "Permissions..." from either the edit menu or by right-clicking on the registry key's parent directory.
    4) Click the "Advanced" button to add a new user.
    5) Type in "Everyone" as the new user and click OK (it may not be
necessary to give everyone full control but this is what I did and it
    worked).
    6) Configure the permissions for user "Everyone" to "Full Control"
    7) Uninstall LabView (if necessary) and re-install.
