Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE error. Please help!
Every time I try to install QuickTime/iTunes, this error message pops up:
Could not open key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\Quicktime.Quicktime\CLSID. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
I have no idea what to do.
Dell Windows XP
The Adobe knowledgebase article actually pointed me in the right
direction and I was able to solve the issue. Thanks to all who gave
advise, you guys are the reason these forums work!
The error message was actually coming from the Microsoft Installer, not
from anything related to National Instruments. Also, ironically, what
the message said was spot on with one exception, while I personally had
access to the registry key, the installer didn’t. What I ended up doing
was going into the registry using regedit and setting the permissions
on the key in questions such that “Everyone” had full access. After
that I uninstalled LabView then reinstalled and it worked fine this
time. The step by step follows:
1) Open the registry editor by selecting "Run" from the start menu and then typing in "regedit".
2) Browse through the registry and select the entry mentioned in the error message.
3) Choose "Permissions..." from either the edit menu or by right-clicking on the registry key's parent directory.
4) Click the "Advanced" button to add a new user.
5) Type in "Everyone" as the new user and click OK (it may not be
necessary to give everyone full control but this is what I did and it
worked).
6) Configure the permissions for user "Everyone" to "Full Control"
7) Uninstall LabView (if necessary) and re-install.

It states "could not open key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\INTERFACE\(915DA835-02FE-4953-92FA-624BDF5D 85AB) VEIFY THAT YOU HAVE SUFFICIENT ACCESS TO THAT KEY, OR CONTACT YOUR SUPPORT PERSONNEL, Which i did . I contacted the apple support and they could not help. has anyone gotten this error? Did some research some results show that this has occurred during updates on the itunes but has not seen how to successfully uninstall without getting this error. I attempted to use the control panel and uninstall but it provides me with the same error all the time. I NEED SOME Answers on this issue. Can you please help?!
Perhaps try the fixit from the following Microsoft web page. (Try the "problems uninstalling" option.)
Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled -
What is the next step for this installation problem? I have no idea what "key" this message is talking about or how to address it. Please help. I can't download the latest iTunes and now I can't use the iTunes store through my old iTunes either.
Basically I have the same message.
Could not open key:
HKEYLOCALMACHINES\Software\Classes\QuickTimePlayerLib.QuickTimePlayerApp\CLSID
Verify that you hace sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
I am the administrator. I have no idea what this is or where it is at. I have tried installing iTunes latest update and uninstalled everything else trying to get this to work. No iTunes now. HELP!!! -
Could not open key HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classic\Quicktime.Quicktime\CLSID
is the error message I recieve when attempting to install the latest version of quicktime. I attempted to delete the key and other quicktime keys from the registry but I recieve this error message:
'Cannot delete Quicktime.Quicktime: Error Deleting Key'. I then tried to export the key and recieved this: 'selected branch does not exist. Make sure correct path is given.'
Any help with a solution would be greatly appreciated
HP Pavilion 751n Windows XPWhat I would do is go to registry key and try deleting it. If it does not delete, right click on it and choose permissions. Permissions need to be allowed for at least Administrator and System. If the key does not delete, move on to the next one that is asscociated with QuickTime and delete it, and go on deleting all the keys that are QuickTime related. The one that would not delete may delete after deleting the others.
Let me try to explain this the best I can. I am not a expert in the registry, but know enough to get in and out deleting a programs keys without having the computer become completely unfunctional. There are also books on it.
For example when I delete a program I also go into the registry and remove it, just something I do. Because after removing a program thru the add\remove program control panel and start>search>for all files and folders, there are still registry entrees.
When I start deleting keys in the registry from a program I'll normally run into one that won't delete, even after giving it permissions. So I'll by pass it and go on to the next key, related to the program. The one that wouldn't delete will come up again and end up deleting. So I seem to think that some of the keys inter-react with one another. Because the one that initially wouldn't delete now does after deleting the others, and sometimes giving permissions again.
If you want to delete all keys asscociated with a program. You can go to the Edit menu in the registry, choose Find, type in the name of the program and hit the Enter key on the keyboard. When the key shows up hit Delete on the keyboard. To get to the next key associated with the program, hit the F3 key on the keyboard and the next one will appear. This can get confusing because a registry entree can show up as a series of numbers, so your counting on the registry editor that, that key is asscociated with the program. As long as you are deleting keys that are associated with a program you are OK, if you delete something in the registry that you are not sure of, that is where you'll get in trouble.
You should try going to the path giving here to the registry. HKEYLOCALMACHINESoftwareClasses and try deleting those keys that are QuickTime and see if it resolves the problem. -
Help...I am getting this error message when attempting to load the newest Quicktime on my PC. I am a a novice and need detailed instructions on how to fix. I have tried uninstalling all products and reinstalling. Any suggestions?
pgfpdwife (or really anyone else in this thread),
Why don't you collect an installer log and send it to those lazy Apple engineers?
Open a commnd prompt window. (Start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return.)
2. Drag and drop iTunesSetup.exe onto the window so that the full pathname of the file is at the command line prompt.
3. Type in a space, then the following line:
/l*v C:\log.txt
4. Hit return.
5. The installer will create a log file:
C:\log.txt
You need to send that file to our buddy Roy. Make sure that you include:
(1) the log file.
(2) the link to this thread
(3) a one line description of your problem, i.e. "iTunes won't install because of permission problems with Quicktime registry keys".
(4) the username that you're using here in the discussion boards.
Roy is getting a little swamped with messages and needs to make sure he gets all the information. And if he doesn't get this informaiton, the message is just going to get dropped on the floor. -

Hello,
When I try to install LabView (v7.1 or v8.0) I get the following error:
"Error 1402: Could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\LVDB.Application\CLSID. Verify that
you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support
personnel."
I have full administrator privileges on my computer and I am able to
modify that key manually using the registry editor. When I click the
"Yes" button to continue the installation it will complete but then
when I launch LabView I get the following error:
"The requested feature is unavailable on "localhost"".
Can you help me get LabView up and running?

Acrobat Pro won't install: Error 1402: Could not open key on install attempt
I've been stuck in install hell for the past week. Here's my issue: I have Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium and want to install it on a PC running MS Vista, but when I attempt an install, I cannot install Adobe Acrobat 8.
Reading the event viewer, I get the following type error:
Product: Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional -- Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\CLSID\{8AD0743E-113B-4E26-BA21-1E9A71098F41}\InprocSe rver32. System error 5. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
Here's the problem: I'm basically playing whack-a-mole. Each time I go into regedit to change the registry permission for the named folder and attempt to install again, I get a new error saying that the Adobe install software could not open some other key. Each install attempt takes 15-20 min, and I must have done this 20+ times over the past week.
I've done all the obvious things like uninstalling everything Adobe (including my browsers Flash plug-in), running the CS3Clean software, running Vista in selective start-up, running setup as an administrator, barking at the moon, ect.
All the affected permission issues some to reside in the CLSID folder, but there is no way for me to set the permissions there and have them apply to all the subfolders without getting some sort of "whatever, we do what we want" error.
I'm at my wits end here. I've posted this to the Adobe customer support page, and four days after the supposed 25 hour turn-around, I still have yet to hear from Adobe. Any help would certainly be appreciated.i suggest a best way to solve this maan,
follow this,
create a new administrator user on your xp,
log off current user n log on to new admin user,
install yr program,
and
log off this admin user n log on to previous user,
n continue to use yr installed program
tahts it

Adobe Reader Updater - Error 1402. Could not open key:
Adobe Reader Updater, error 1402, could not open key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Opt
I might have accidently discontinue. Can any body help me????Hi,
It looks like you do not have access to the registry key mentioned i.e. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run\Optional Components\IMAIL.
This might be due to the fact that you may not be added to the Administrators group or the registry key has been denied access explicitly to a group that you may be part of.
People in my network setup were facing the same issue, and we fixed the same using Microsoft's "subinacl" tool. You can follow the below mentioned steps to rectify your issue as well:
1. Download Microsoft's SubinACL tool from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe -4a91-93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en
2. Install the same by double clicking on the "subinacl.msi" just downloaded.
3. Open Command Prompt window through the Run Dialog Box (Start -> Run and type "cmd" and click OK)
4. In the Command Prompt window, type in the following commands:
i. cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools" (Hit Enter)
ii. subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Opti onalComponents /grant=administrators=f /grant=SYSTEM=f /grant=USERS=f /grant="Creator Owner"=f (Hit Enter)
You should see some processes happening on your screen. After the process ends, retry the update operation you were originally trying to perform. Hopefully, it should succeed now. -

Any help would be most welcome, as I am desperate to use my new Nano my wife just bought me for my Birthday. In plain English if you can.+My next problem is, that whenever I plug my iPod Nano, 3rd Gen into my PC, it shuts down and reboots. Any ideas on this one?+
Do you also get that if you try playing a movie using QuickTime?
Are you getting any sort of blue screen when the PC shuts down? if so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x{zeros/letters/numbers} CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
If the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (Exact spelling, please.)
Here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
If you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked. -
ERROR 1402. Could Not Open Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MAHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\RUN\OPTIONAL COMPONENTS\IMAIL
You could try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove all traces of any existing versions of Reader prior to installing the version you want and updating it as required. This utility is no longer supported by Microsoft because it can conflict with Win 7, but you can still find it in sites like http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
