Could not place picture, scratch disks are full

Hello, after fresh installation of Windows 7 ultimate on a PC (Intel Core-i5, GA-H97, 8GB RAM, 120 SSD for system, 1TB for data), and Photoshop CC 2014, we have a problem:
When trying to add a picture to a new Photoshop document we get the following error message: "Could not place, because the scratch disks are full".
On C: (the SSD) there is 70GB free space, on D: there is 900GB free space.
I've defined both disks as scratch disks, then tried to define either of the disks as scratch disk - nothing helped!
Could you please help us ASAP?

Have you restarted Photoshop after changing the Performance Preferences?
Using the System drive as Scratch Disk is not prudent if it can be avoided.

It means that the operation you tried to do would have filled all of your scratch drives.
Check your Photoshop preferences to make sure you have the drives assigned correctly. And double check your settings (like the crop tool with a high resolution specified) for the particular operation that fails -- most likely it is trying to create something huge that would fill your scratch drives.

You entered a resolution in the crop settings, and Photoshop is now resampling the cropped area as you instructed -- creating a document too big for your scratch disk. Take the resolution out, or reset the crop tool.

Elements 2.0 is an old version. The message may be due to the fact that your new HD is much bigger than your older one, and not due to the classical reasons:

I just installed this program on my new HP Pavilion Model h8-1214, which has 1.8 TB of space with 10.0 GB of RAM. I have read forums on this problem, but they tell how to fix the problem through Photoshop. How do I fix the scratch disk settings without being able to open Photoshop? Please help me with this problem for the Adobe Support team will not even answer my question..

By far the easiest solution is to upgrade to photoshop elements 10 or newer, which has no problems with big hard drives and has some new features you may like.
It's available for a thirty day trial.
Actually versions pse 3 and later have no problems with large hard drives.
Here are a couple things you can try which might work:
Option 1: Just after double clicking on the pse 2 shortcut press the Ctrl+Alt keys and keep holding the keys until you get the scratch disk preferences dialog
then choose your recovery partition as the First. This would only work if you have a recovery partition or another smaller hard drive installed that you can use as the scratch disk.
(i don't have a recovery partition on this computer)
Option 2. Shrink (shrink volume) your present hard drive down to 1 tb
Option 3: If you have windows 7 pro or ultimate you can use virtual xp (downloaded from microsoft)

I am using Photoshop 7 on Windows Vista. I just bought a new computer and installed Photoshop (which worked fine on my old computer running XP). It installs correctly but wen I launch it I get the error "Could not initialize Photoshop because the scratch disks are full." Then Photoshop immedietly shuts down.
My C drive has 1.3 TB free, my D drive has 145 GB free and my E drive has 5 GB free. I've tried defragmenting all the drives and deleting any temp files.
I do not know why this is happening and would greatly appreciate any advice.

there's a bug in 7 that causes this on drives with more than 1 TB free. upgrade photoshop to fix it or temporarily fill the drive with garbage or partition it so the free space is less than 1TB.
a side note is that current upgrade policy only gives special pricing to 3 versions back. right now that's version 7. if you wait until cs4 comes out you'll be 4 versions back and will be out of the upgrade path. then if you want a higher version in the future you'll have to purchase a full license again. if planning on upgrading photoshop - ever - suggest you do it before cs4 ships.

I have just installed Photoshop Elements 2 on my new computer. When I try to open the program, I get the message that the scratch disks are full !!! It's a new computer --lots of memory and almost no programs installed yet. The program works perfectly fine on my old computer...never have gotten a message about scratch disks.
What do I have to do to get Photoshop Elements 2 to work on my new computer? And please don't tell me to buy a later edition of Photoshop Elements! I already have Version 9 as well, but I tend to use Version 2 more for simple tasks.

Is it not possible to launch any part of the program? Even going to a folder and right clicking an image and choosing “Open with Photoshop Elements” or double clicking the application “PhotoshopElements” in Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements
Program Files (x86) on Windows 64 bit. It’s not clear what you can do otherwise.
Normally scratch disks are allocated through preferences e.g. in PSE2
Edit à Preferences à Plug-ins & Scratch Disks
First disk is normally allocated to start up and you need to allocate the second to the C: drive or other volume.
You can check this if you still have PSE2 working on an old machine but unless anyone else can think of a solution you may be stuck.

Can't open tif file. "Scratch disks are full"

Version: Photoshop CS5 12.0.4 64 bit
Scratch Disk: 6.67 GB of available space on my scratch disk (C Drive). I've allocated 90% (2686 MB of my available 2984 MB of RAM to Photoshop).
File I'm trying to open: 39 MB tiff file
I have nothing else open in Photoshop and no other applications open. Even so, I get the message "Could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full" when I try to open the file ... yet when Photoshop itself opens, it still claims to have 6.67 gigs of available space.
The file I'm trying to open is a 39 meg tiff with a few smart objects in it.
I just opened a 23 meg tiff with a few smart objects in it, with no problems.
I just opened a 39 meg (same size) psd (no smart objects), with no problems.
Why does this 39 meg tiff file cause Photoshop to say the scratch disk is full?

Welcome to the forum.
As others have stated, the problem is most likely just a lack of HDD real estate, and as also mentioned, if your Windows Virtual Memory (Page File) is dynamically managed (the default setting),you probably have even less, that what is being reported.
One major consideration is that a HDD begins to lose performance, when it reaches about 70%, and this is cumulative, in that the closer one gets to capacity, the slower the performance. Also, as one approaches capacity, the liklihood of a failure increases.
Treat yourself to an additional HDD, clean up your boot disk, and many things will improve.

THE SCRATCH DISKS ARE FULL

I can not complete any action while in photoshop because the scratch disks are full. I have already run into the Performance Preferences and allowed the program to use the 7.09 GB I have of free space. What else can I do? Help please, I am about to throw out the laptop through the windows....

If the scratch disk must be contiguous, then the defrag will help. It's unclear from Adobe literature whether this is true. In fact, from the literature, I'd say it's not, as they only mention "contiguous" and "RAM" together (from my super-thorough googling). I certainly understood it to be contiguous, but I misunderstand a lot.

(and doesn't defragging free up space too? I used to defrag unix boxes a lot and would save between 24 and 32k each time. YMMV )

When I attempt to crop a photo I get this message: Cannot complete your request because the scratch disks are full. In fact one scratch disk has 62+ GB and the other has 52+ GB available. Does anyone have a solution for this?

@Mylenium: My computer is running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro, 16 GB Ram, AMD Radeon 6900 series with I don't remember how many GB of ram (I installed it maybe 2 1/2 or 3 years ago). I have 4 physical hard drives with Raid 0 and Raid 5 configurations. I have been using my system full bore since I built it, and the entire configuration has been excellent for my processes until now. Is there any other specific information that you would need to have an idea of what the problem may be? Thanks.
@ JJMack: My scratch disk available volumes were wide open with 62 GB available (S: drive) and 52 GB available (O: drive). I'm puzzled because I have used this configuration on my computer for the past 2 1/2+ years with flawless function. I'm not new to setting up and configuring my computer, but I'm new to this odd error message.

I have only had Photoshop elements on my computer for less than a month (free trial). I cant open a New document because it says my scratch disks are full every time.. I checked my selected scratch disk and it said I have about 9G of free space.. Problem is when I open the initial window to set the width, height and res it says my image size is 20.3G.. Is this the reason why I cant open a new Document?

Could you inadvertently be using ppcm instead of pip?

Scratch disks are full error, so photoshop paused....

i received the scratch disks are full message while trying to save a large file. i hit okay, hoping there was enough space left to finish the save - alas, there wasn't.
i quickly deleted some larger unused files, but photoshop is still 'paused'. when opening up the force quit menu it reads "photoshop (paused)" - i know i'll probably have to force quit and lose all of my progress... however, now that there is 18+gb free, is there a way to resume, or unpause, photoshop so it can finish the save?

Hey. It's dicey at best, but you might be able to get out of it. If photoshop is still running, can you make a new document? If you can, hide photoshop, free up some space, then come back and make a tiny document, like 5x5 pixels. This will force a purge, and possibly let you deal with your important document. Since i don't hold a lot of hope for that working, here's a few tips to maybe avoid this in the future... Do you have more than one drive? If you don't, and you are doing any kind of serious photoshop work, you need to get one. This leads to the first rule: don't use your startup drive as a scratch disk. I have 3 other drives, each one set as a scratch, and the startup disk not specified at all. Another thing about PS's scratch system, is that it needs contiguous space to work properly. Another case for not using your startup volume, and also for getting an external, making it easier to defrag it once in a while.

My Scratch Disks are full!

Hi, My computer's "Scratch Disks" are full and I've been deleting lots of files this morning and now have 16 GB of space on my hard drive, however, when working on photographs in PhotoShop CS3 - I am not able to save any work as the Scratch Disks are full. I have 8 GB RAM. Can anybody advise me please?

RAM and hard disks are in fact two distinct items. Although it may be more blurred when using scratch discs.
8 GB of RAM, which appears in Apple menu -> About This Mac is usually RAM in the form of a chip on a board on the logicboard, or part of it. It is used to multitask programs. Additional RAM on your hard disk or SSD disc may be allocated for more multitasking purposes. If your hard disk/SSD is over 85% full, those tasks may have no room to be allocated on the boot drive. Using Photoshop Elements 12 on my MacBook Pro laptop, when saving a file I have been working on I get the following message although there is at least 50GB free space on the hard drive: Could not save because the disk is full.

I have been making Christmas Cards, working in layers and then flattening the image. However, I am unable to save the final image as I get the following message: Could not save because the disk is full. Looking at the system report for my laptop shows there is 52GB of free space.

Well, running on a 2006 model. I did not have a startup disc. Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006. Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set. And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard. And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive. I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now. We'll see what they tell me . I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff. So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc. we'll see if they can recover. If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system. Just not sure at this point.
