Could not restore from the system image in ext. hard drive for Windows Server 2008 R2.
Hi,
Its been since 2 weeks I am struck with this issue. Any help is appreciated. I want to restore my server (Windows 2008 R2) to the system image I have in my external hard disk. The problem is my image is not getting recognized by the server when I chose the
system repair option while booting with the OS cd.
I placed the files in the folder called WindowsImageBackup in the root folder of the hard disk. The WindowsImageBackup folder has the folder structure like this: WindowsImageBackup\my_pc_name\Backup 2014-03-09 084946\xxxxx.vhd files
I have put the MediaId file inside the "\Backup...." folder. Is it okay? And the MediaId file which I have has .file extension not .bin extension. Is there anything wrong with it?
By the way I tried using the hard disk with USB 2.0 as well as 3.0 . It did not work for both.
What should I do to make my system image recognized?
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
The trick to restoring system from backup disk is to place the WindowsImageBackup folder at
the root. This will allow the recovery utility to automatically find the folder. (E.g. E:\WindowsImageBackup)
Also check with load drivers option in restoration wizard or change boot order in bios to detect usb first then physical drive.
Hope this help you.

2nd drive unformatted and not restored after attempting restore from a system image
I created a system image, which included drive C (where Windows is installed) and drive G (where some installed Windows programs are located). I then ran into a situation where I wanted to restore from the system image. With my first attempt,
this process took several days. When I returned home from work, my computer had booted up into Windows -- drive C had successfully been restored. I soon found out though that drive G was in an unformatted state.
Now, given the time it took for each drive to restore and the sizes of data for each drive (160gb for C and 1000gb for G), it seemed odd to me that the entire process had completed already, given the time that had passed and the progress indicated for drive
G in the status bar, in the morning before I went to work. It is entirely possible that one of my cats may have jumped on my desk and somehow cancelled the operation.
My questions are:
1. if the restore is cancelled while the 2nd disk is being restored, will the 1st disk (C) still be successfully restored?
2. why does this process take so long?
3. if there is some other error, is it displayed? Does system restore automatically reboot after completion/cancellation? Is there an error file created somewhere if there was an error, or perhaps something mentioned in a log file? If so,
where?
4. has anyone encountered a similar issue before and can provide any insight?
5. anything else I'm missing?
I'm attempting to restore a second time, and it is not even halfway through drive C, so it might not be until the end of the week before the entire process completes. To be safe, especially from nosey cats, I disabled the mouse and keyboard so no input
can interrupt and accidentally cancel the process.
thanks,
ChrisHi Chris,
For the first problem, if the restore is cancelled while the 2nd disk is being restored, the 1st disk (C) can be successfully restored.
For the second problem, I think it is normal to take a long time to finish the process, it is depend on the size of the date.
For the third problem, you may check the setup log files to find the clue of the cause.

Windows could not finish configuring the system...restart
Not sure what happened, but I keep getting the error:
Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer.
I tried to boot in safe mode and it gave me the same error.
Any thoughts on what to try or is this a lost cause?
I can't remember all the stats of the computer since it is a backup one, but it does surpass all the requirements.Having encountered a myriad of sysprep problems over the past 6 weeks in preparing 10 Windows 7 images, here are my thoughts on the “Windows could not finish configuring the system issue”.
This forum has been the best resource i have seen on the problem. Despite the lack of any input from Microsoft, or even acknowledgement of the problem which has been around since Vista was released.
I don’t have any definitive answer for anybody, only what did or did not work for me. Hope it might help someone.
First of all my platform is Windows 7 Professional 32 bit.
I found the error occurs if you include copyprofile TRUE in the answer file, Microsofts only supported method for the default profile, which doesn’t work.
I also got the error on the last image made which had all the same applications as on other images made without any problem.
After wasting more time trying to work out the cause, and removing installed apps, I went back and made the image again, taking multiple Ghost backups at various stages.
I left network printer drivers off the image, and there were no issues.
However all the previous images had the printer drivers with no problems. I then added the printer drivers, syspreped again, and no problems.
I don't have Kaspersky, Alchohol 120% or Crystal Reports, Citrix XEN App installed on any of my images.
For me the Windows Media Player Network service is also not the issue. It has always been stopped when i checked it. It is Manual startup.
Domain or Workgroup membership doesn’t make any difference.
I never used any 3rd party tools to format the drive - created partitions using the installation DVD. Partition 1 100MB windows created, Partition 2 C: Partition 3 D:
It cannot be attributed to the imaging software as the sysprepped machine fails upon restarting.
So it seems completely random to me. The only consistent thread is once you have this problem you have to go back to square 1 and start again.
For what it’s worth to anyone, this was my application install process 2<sup>nd</sup> time around to try and identify the cause;

So I was thankfully unable to recreate the issue the second time. The only difference was Microsoft update was NOT installed on the first image which had the problem, and consequently no Office updates were installed.
It would be nice if any of this made any sense! -
Windows could not finish configuring the system error after sysprep /generalize
Hi
I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate RTM off from technet and as always I do make use of WIM images on having them deployed to my home PC's
I was able to have it installed on a clean machine and once the wizard appeared i immediately entered Audit mode (shift+ctrl+f3) and the usual I loaded all of the software i need to pre-install after I was done I Immediately loaded sysprep and had it with the generalized option
now this is where the problem begins....... after it restarts during the "Setup is starting Services" screen it gives me a message box error saying "Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt resume configuration, restart the computer" and once I press ok it jsut restarts and gives the same error again.
This does not happen when i dont select the generalize option in sysprep.
Anyone who had the same issues?I now have the ACTUAL SOLUTION to this problem. This solution will actually tell you exactly what registry key is causing your sysprep to fail, so then you don't have to slowly install
every program until you find the problem -- especially since this didn't work for me because my problem has been intermittent.
This issue is caused by certain registry keys that are either:
a) Larger than 8kb
b) Set with incorrect permissions
c) Corrupt in some way
For me, the problem was intermittent (same registry key would sometimes cause the issue and sometimes not - must be corrupt sometimes) so it was impossible to tell what program was doing it. Luckily, there is a log you can look at that will tell you
exactly what registry key is erroring out. Here are the steps for getting the log you need to see:
When you see the error message, do the following:
1.) Push Shift+F10 to get to a command prompt
2.) Navigate to C:\windows\Panther
3.) Find the Setup.etl file and find a way to copy this file off of the system (I copied it to the D:\ partition and used Ghost to gather that partition and get the file off)
4.) Copy the setup.etl file from the corrupted system to another computer that has Windows 7. Put it on the root of C:\ for easiest access.
5.) Open a Command Prompt on the Windows 7 computer.
6.) Navigate to the root of C:\ (or wherever you saved the file)
7.) Type "tracerpt setup.etl -o logfile.csv"
8.) Close the command prompt and open up logfile.csv in your text editor of choice.
9.) Look through the log file (towards the end probably) for messages that say "Failed to process reg key or one of it's decendants" For me, the exact eror looked like this: "Failed to process reg key or one of its descendants: [\REGISTRY\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ESET\ESET
Security\CurrentVersion\Plugins\01000200\Profiles\@My profile]" If you search for "reg key" or "failed to process" you should find the failure.
10.) Remove this software from your image, or find out how to get the registry key that is failing to work properly.
After this, you should be able to properly identify any problem keys and remove/workaround them on your image.
I see this post is about a year old at this point, but after searching the internet for weeks, I had high hopes for this solution. It seemed to go well, but the logfile.csv doesn't have the word "fail" in it anywhere...no "reg key", nothing. Did a sysprep
install with an unattend.xml answer file that seems to be working properly, but hangs at "Setup is starting services." forever.
At this point, I'm pretty convinced that the problem is a service or reg key error from one of the apps I installed during audit mode, but I can't tell which app/service is causing the problem.
Are there any other methods for viewing failed services or registry errors that would cause the sysprep install process to hang at "Setup is starting services."?
Willing to post logfile.csv from the "tracerpt setup.etl -o logfile.csv" command, or other log files such as setupact.log, etc. Nothing popped out at me.
For now I think I'll start making multiple .wim files with only certain software installed to try to discover which application is the culprit...just wish there was an easier way. -
Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted
hi all,
when i try to render a afx project from media encoder i get the following message
"Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted"
i've read on the forum that this is due to an old installation of Premiere.
I'm using a brand new computer. the only software installed is my cs5 master collection and the updates from adobe website.
win7 pro
i7
16 gig ram
cheers
sHello, this is terrible problem, which i found in CS 6 softwares ...
solution i found only working, is uninstall and reinstall full package.. but it is not all,
you need to do BRAND NEW admin account in windows, and install it there.
that means, i could not export after repair from encoder in my original account never more (!!) .. this is really terrible way how to repair this issue, because :
1.by reinstalling of software, client WASTE HIS TIME
2.by necessity to begin work in another windows profile you again WASTE YOUR TIME because of learning and migrating all other profile modifications, which i see really unaccpetable. Adobe means, this solution of repair is ok, and they did not do till today any steps of creating some "clever" solution.
I ask everybody, who will meet this issue in future, guys, please, complain about this situation, give "BUG Report" to them, and write "feature request" to them , in the way of creating some repair tool, which check actual "broken" connections between encoder and premiere, which refuses to "take material" from it and encode, and REPAIR it automatically..
I am not IT, but ..does it seems so hard to create this ? Adobe IT developers should know their systems, and should create such utility tool really easy.
Steps to reproduce bug:
1. i export anything by button "queue" from premiere to Encoder
2. Encoder will start encoding
3. Encoder does not show the window of media encoding (down left )
Results: sound of sheep occur,
in encoding error file is this reason of canceling the encoding :
01/02/2014 10:10:48 AM : Encoding Failed
Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted.
History of this problem and detailed description, HOW i did "repair" this. With wasting of app 2,5 days of my working time :
1. after repairing "error 5" problem , i solved it by reinstalling the suite from the new admin user profile (profile B) .
I continued my work on my normal working windows profile . (profile A)
Every cooperation (AE+Pr, export media via "queue" to Encoder) was working fine . . .
2. suddenly it stop working (without knowing any possible reason - i did not do installations )
and showed in error export log file :
"Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted."
3.repair via procedure(procedure "a"):
i did this procedure on the profile B (profile from last time installation of repairing problem error 5)
I did these steps :
a-uninstall master coll suite
b-i used Adobe cleaner tool (remove ALL)
c-removed raw directories in locations
•C:\Program Files\Adobe
•C:\Program Files(x86)\Adobe
•C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe
•C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Adobe
•C:\ProgramData\Adobe
d-removed these links from registry file
•HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe
•HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe
•HKEY_LOCAL_MACH INE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Adobe
•HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software\Wow6432Node\Adobe
e-restarted the PC
f- newly installed the Master Coll CS6
g-update the software
result of repair of "3" : problem still exists
4.Ok i find out after coordination with support, it should have been created ANOTHER NEW admin account.
4a:so i did the same procedure (uninstalling) in profile B
4b: and then i created brand new admin profile (profile C)for INSTALLATION of software
4c: restarted the pc (and did not updated it yet)
result :
==exporting of any sequence/raw/AE link video material from premiere via "queue" (Encoder) (profile C) : export WORKS
==exporting of any sequence/raw/AE link video material from premiere via "queue" (Encoder) (profile B) : export WORKS
==exporting of any sequence/raw/AE link video material from premiere via "queue" (Encoder) (profile A) : export DOES NOT WORK ! ! !
(in profile A, is possible to export some raw video material in encoder which is imported to it via "drag and drop)
problem i see:, i have my basic profile A, which i am interested to work, because of all my directory modifications are in there..
this issue should be some "broken" connections between encoder and premiere, which refuses to "take material" from it and encode.
what i expect :
to get from Adobe some repair tool, which automatically checks these connections and repair if necessary, without necessity of founding the new profile and reinstallation of whole software.. this is madness !
what i do NOT expect from Adobe:
to get from Adobe advice of kind : you have to reinstall full software in new admin profile. sorry , we do not know the solution, because we do not know, how do behave our software. -

Adobe Media Encoder for CS4 error Could not read from the source
Hello,
I get an error when I try to export from Premiere CS4. It doesn't matter how I export. Seems like an easy fix, but I can't figure it out. Any help is appreciated:

deleted.
Thank you
ArtWhen you attempt to encode media with Adobe Media Encoder CS4 on Windows, the following error message appears in the text file (AMEEncodingErrorLog.txt) that opens when you click the error icon: "Encoding Failed. Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted."
If it's that correct, you removed an earlier version of Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe Creative Suite on the same computer.
Do one or both of the following solutions:
Solution 1: Create a shortcut to the Premiere Pro executable file, rename the shortcut to Premiere, and move the shortcut to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\dynamiclink.
Close all Adobe applications.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. (If you installed Premiere Pro CS4 in a location other than the default of C:\Program Files\Adobe, then navigate to your custom installation location.)
Right-click on Adobe Premiere Pro.exe (which might appear without the .exe extension) and choose Create Shortcut.
Rename the newly created shortcut to just Premiere.
Important: The name of the shortcut must be exactly Premiere with no other characters.
Open a second Windows Explorer window, and navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\dynamiclink.
Move the Premiere shortcut that you created into the dynamiclink folder.
Solution 2: Remove and reinstall all Premiere Pro CS4 components or all Adobe Creative Suite 4 components.
Do one of the following:
Windows XP: Choose Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
Windows Vista: Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
In the list of installed programs, select Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium, or Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection.
Click Change/Remove (Windows XP) or Uninstall (Windows Vista).
Follow the on-screen instructions to remove all components of Premiere Pro CS4 (including Adobe Encore CS4 and Adobe OnLocation CS4) or to remove all components of your edition of Adobe Creative Suite 4.
Re-install your Adobe software. -
Encoding Failed- Could Not Read from the Source
I have a quickly approaching deadline for the short film I am working on, and it would be greatly appreciated if anyone knew anything of my predicament. Everytime I try to export anything from Premiere Pro (CS4 of course), when I start the queue it says "Could Not Read from the Source. Please check if it has been moved or deleted." The files, of course, have not been moved or deleted, and the raw footage for the film is in the same place as everything else. All my scratch disks are set to the same folder, etc. I don't understand, and it won't even let me export to my camera. It says it does, but when I check my camera, it's nothing but blank tape. Any (quick) help would be very much appreciated!
Thank you. -
CS4 Pr-Encoder: "Encoding failed/Could not read from the source..."
When i start queueing it apears to be loading fine but then after a few minutes it gives me the yellow hazard triangle on the status column. I have tryied changing settings and still the same.
"Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted."
...is what the details notepad displays
This is my first Pr CS4 editing, Please help.
Thanx!latest versions of CS4 and snow leopard 10.6.1.
May have no part in your problem, but many are having real issues with almost anything Adobe with Snow Leopard. There has been a lot of chatter saying that Apple is aware of this, and is working on an OS update to be released soon.
While I have not seen this particular issue with Snow Leopard, there have been so many more, that I'd certainly put the OS into the list of "usual suspects." In the Encore forum, some had great success by rolling back the OS to whatever was prior to Snow Leopard, just plain old "Leopard?"
Wish I had a definite cure for your ills, but the best that I can offer is that it does not seem that you are alone.
Good luck, and I hope that the Mac OS update does fix things for you.

Media Encoder - encoding failed - could not read from the source
Using PPCC, AME queued jobs all fail with the message "Encoding failed. Could not read from the source".
But doing a simple export works perfectly.I recall quite a few other threads about this. Do a forum search.
-
I installed CS5 but completely ignored the fact plugins were required to be 64-bit. It'll be months before the plugins I require for my projects to be updated!
So I continued editing in CS4 and when I attempted to export with the media encoder it halts instantly with an exclamation mark, the log says :
"Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted."
And yes I'm not stupid, I did my research.
I tried uninstalling CS4 and reinstalling. I tried the shortcut fix. I tried moving my cache files. My extensions are correct.
Right now the only fix seems to be completely removing CS5 and CS4, After Effects just because they share files (?) and all my settings and plugins along with it! I'd rather NOT do that if I can!Good detective work, and glad that it worked. Now, your cure will be here for us to link to and for others to find. Your title will help direct others to this thread. Job well done.
Thanks,

i have tried creaeted a NEW Premiere Pro project and still get the same error again ... can someone help me to figure out what is wrong ...Hi Neil
I have been using file names with spaces and it has been working fine. As stated in reply to Jones, uninstall and reinstall of Premiere Pro CS4 has helped to get rid of this error.
also i did not use Dynamic link, but was trying to create MPEG file using Media Encoder and then import it in Encore.
your suggestion for H264 seems good and will try it.
x264 Pro is for CS5 and above versions, so it seems i can not use it and have to manage with Adobe Media Encoder's default. Hope i will not have any major technical issues.
please suggest me for below:-
1) i have 4 hours of Full HD footage and made 1080i MPEG2 files of 30mbps to fit in 2 seperate Bluray Disks.
2) now i plan to put all in one Single Bluray Disk by reducing MPEG2 file average data rate to 15mbps. will that work or is there any limitation of time in Bluray Disk.
3) Will it be ok to create H264 files at 30mbps [as you mentioned H264 reduces file size to half of MPEG] and still be able to fit 4 hours footage in one BR Disk ?
4) even though i specify Min 10 Target 25 Max 30 data rate for MPEG files creation, it creats file at data rate of 30 mbps, can you explain why it is happening as i thought my target rate should be 25 mbps and not the maximum rate specified.
Thanks ...
PS...
my source file is .mov 1920 x 1080i 29.97 fps from Canon 6D. first i tried to create progressive file in Encoder but while imported in Encore realised at 29.97 fps, it allows only interlaced file and had to transcode back to interlaced. so i stick to interlaced file.
Canon 6D also allows me to shoot in 24fps [motion movie] which Encore can handle as progressive file for authoring. What are the pro and cons of shooting in 24fps, if you can suggest.
