I have a mid 2012 mac mini , when i try to upgrade to yosemite from mountain lion , by using the .app , it says "could not write installation information to disk contact apple care". I've tried installing  from the boot up menu using a bootable usb drive , it gives me an error. What should I do ?

Be sure you have at least 20 GBs of free space on your hard drive. Do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
You may now try the Yosemite installer again. If you still get the error then you may have a defective installer or the drive needs to be reformatted.

  • Could not write installation information on disk. Contact AppleCare

Ok here we go. I have been trying to dual-boot my 13" Macbook Pro (bought in August 2012). I downloaded rEFIt to partion my hard drive and choose which partion I would boot from from start-up. I plugged in a USB with Ubuntu from Linux and started up my computer. Everything was going fine and then my battery died while installing. This messed up everything. When I booted up my computer there was a question mark inside a folder that was flashing. It wouldn't go away so I started the Internet Recovery (Command+R). When Startup Disk showed up I clicked on the reinstall of Mountain Lion. I tried this at home first and it never showed me a disk to install it on. I tried to restore my hard drive and it gave me an error message (I can't remember exactly). So at school the next day I wiped my hard drive and tried the reinstall. Now it is telling me that it "Could not write installation information on disk. Contact AppleCare." This might just be the WiFi at my school as it does have its restrictions. I will try it at home later but I was posting this in case it this is not the issue. My computer is still under warranty so if this can't be resolved, I will contact them. Thank you.

rEFIt hasn't been updated since 10.6. days, you've messed up your EFI firmware.
When I booted up my computer there was a question mark inside a folder that was flashing.
This is the firmware telling you it can't find a bootable OS volume
I plugged in a USB with Ubuntu from Linux and started up my computer.
Linux requires two partitions, one a swap partition and the other is the main parititon.
So when it installs on a Mac with only one partition, it uses the EFI partition for swap, so you've doubly messed things up.
I started the Internet Recovery (Command+R).
That's Recovery HD, Internet Recovery is Command + Option + r, and your going to need it to fix this mess.
Go home to your local Wifi network and hook up the power cable and preferablly a Ethernet cable to the router.
Hold Command Option r keys down and boot the machine, a globe thingy appears and you wait until Internet Recovery is downloaded from Apple.
Next you use Disk Utilty and select your ENTIRE boot drive on the far left with the drive makers name and size.
Click Erase, you need to eraes the ENTIRE drive as you have messed up your hidden EFI partition with Ubuntu.
Once that is completed, then quit and reinstall Mountain Lion 10.8 it will fix everything.
You can reinstall your free iLife here
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Your files will be gone, I hope you made backups first.
Next time, don't mess with Linux unless you've graduated from a comptuer science college.

  • Could not find installation information for this machine contact applecare

I installed Lion on my MacBook, worked great. After 2 months I wanted to clean install the Lion on the same Macbook; went to Apple Support website and there they had instructions on how to clean install Lion.
I followed the instructions and erased the partition where the OS Lion was installed. Then I tried to re-install it, it kept saying "could not find installation information for this machine contact applecare".
When I contacted apple care, they asked me to pay 49 dollars in order to get help from them. I already paid the cost for the LION OS and now they want another 49 bucks. This is just insane. I'm not a fan of Apple, Mac or iCrap. But I was thinking to buy a new Mac after selling this one. Now I have no interest in buying any Mac product. Windows 7 is much much better than Lion OS X.
I have to fix this before I sell it on ebay so Has anyone tried to clean install Lion ?

I'm with you, OS X Lion has turned a lot of stomachs.
Here's how to go about what you need to do:
Get out your 10.6 installer disk, make sure it's clean and polished (bit of rubbing alcohol and a very soft cloth)
Get 2 blank external drives, connect one and hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk, use Disk Utility to format the external drive use
Erase>Security Option> Zero all data, wait
    under the partition tab
1 partition, option MBR, format FAT
    Disconnect and reboot.
Repeat the same procedure for the second drive and format the
Erase>Security Option> Zero all data, wait
    under the partition tab
1 partition, option GUID, format OS X Extended Journaled
Quit and install 10.6 on the external GUID drive.
Reboot holding the option key, you can boot off the 10.6 external drive, setup, use your same user name as before, update to 10.6.8, grab your files off the OSX Lion partition, transfer a copy to the FAT formatted drive.
What you do is your choice,
To continue using the machine under 10.6
you can erase the entire (select the whole internal drive, not just the OS X Lion Paritition) and use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone 10.6 external to the internal drive,
To sell the machine with a fresh 10.6 install
or simply hold c boot off the 10.6 installer disk and install 10.6 on the internal drive and upon reboot, just hard shutdown by pressing the powerbutton before going through setup. The next person who gets the machine will be greeted by the setup again.
You can use the files on the FAT drive on your Windows PC in some cases.
Else download the free LibreOffice and it can read quite a few file formats.

  • Could not find installation information, contact apple care ?

I am trying to re-install the OS according to the guide and after erasing the harddisk.
I am using OS X utilities and try to reinstall OS X.
Then the screen popped up : To Download and restore OS X, your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple.
However, the message now I am getting is : Could not find installation information for this machine. Contact AppleCare.
Any body know how to deal with this ?

Make sure that your network connection satisfies the requirements for Recovery or Internet Recovery, depending on which you're trying to use. If possible, connect to the router with Ethernet.
    Reboot and try again.
Connect to a different network, if possible.
Wait a few hours and try again.

  • I get a message of "Could not find installation information for this machine." after trying to Reinstall Mac OS X.

I would like to repartition the Main HD to two Partitions but could not do so and keep on getting an error message of "Could not unmount disc.." so I tried choosing the "Macintosh HD" partition and tried Partitioning it but the option is not available. So to my frustration I tried clicking on "Erase" to see whether doing so would allow me to finally partition my HD but still can't. And now since I erased my Macintosh HD partition I could no longer boot to Lion.
Before doing the above steps I downloaded the Lion Recovery Disc Assistant and created an external Recovery HD using an 8GB flash drive. I used this as startup destination by choosing it as boot destination from pressing Option before startup. I tried using Mac OS X  Utilities to Reinstall Mac OS X from the external drive but I only get "Could not find installation information for this machine." message. I also tried booting from the Recovery HD partition on the HD but i also get the same message.
I have a new iMac that came with OS X Lion 10.7.
Anybody have idea how to fix this?

Partitioning on-the-fly may fail if the disk is too fragmented. You cannot run Erase for the internal disk as it contains its system components. The same if trying to run Boot Camp in order to create the Windows partition, it may fail if disk is too fragmented.
If I correctly understand what you want, then you must boot from an external disk, therefore copy Lion to a 4 GB (or higher) flash drive, run the installer, and then choose the option to partition the disk, this is done after rebooting into the installer from the external drive. You cannot do that if the Lion installer is on the internal drive as it cannot erase or repartition itself.
If this fails (did you try this?), then perhaps you can try to create a Lion boot flash or DVD by using a non-Apple app called Lion DiskMaker, when ready restart, after chime press option / alt key, then choose to boot from this newly created boot disk or flash drive. This reportedly works OK (tried with an older version of Lion, not recently, was OK). It is better to work with a flash drive, Lion is not optimized to run from optical media.
WARNING: disregarding the method, you MUST always back up your data when repartitioning or installing / reinstalling.
Hope this helps to solve you issue. Before any attempt, backup, backup, backup.

  • Internet Recovery could not find installation information on this machine.

Hi there I've bought an iMac the latest model as well as the Macbook Air also the latest model and the Airport Extreme also the lastest model but i am unable to do internet recovery and none of my devices came with operating disc to restore my systems. I'm always prompted with the error "could not find installation information on this machine". Is there anyway I could have this fixed? I've called technical support and they said they cant do anything but for me to bring it to any apple support centre to get it formatted. Its alot of trouble for me to go down leave the machine there for a few days and come back to collect it again. Both my machines are extremely new and could not perform this internet recovery from day one. I even though it was my router so i gave away my WNDR 3700 and bought the apple airport extreme. Please help

It's possible there is a block on your Interet connection. If it works on a Apple network but not yours then that points the finger at your network. If this is a home network then I'd start by changing the DNS settings to:
    1. System preferences
    2. Network
    3. Click Advanced
    4. Click DNS tab
    5. Click + sign
    6. Add 208.67.222.222
    7. Click + sign
    8. Add 208.67.220.220
    9. Click OK.
    10. Exit System Preferences
If you are on a business network or any other type of network where someone else has control over it then they may have put certain restrictions on it. In that case you will have to contact the Network Administrator for help.

Early 2011 MacBook Pro upgraded (on-line) from Lion to Mountain Lion.
Going to Rocovery Console (Command+R) during startup and choose "Reinstall OS X".
Clicking Continue in  OS X Mountain Lion  window, clicling contionue in
"To download and restore OSX, your computers'elidgilibility will be veryfied with Apple"
    and got error:
Could not find installation information for this machine.
    Contact AppleCare.
Well, when I retirn from the office, AppleCare is not working anymore.
    Any idea what to do?
    Thanks.

Singapore ISP  Singtel is having issues with Apple Internet Recovery.
There is a need to add proxy access via port 8080.
Since I can't even get into Recovery mode, this info doesn't help.
So, I call up Apple hotline and explain the whole picture.
Was fortunate that Apple has similar feedback from Singapore user.
So, was told to just bring down Mini to service provider.
    Problem solved some what.
Service provider only reinstate the ori OS X Lion.
Back home, I download and install ML.
This time, made a copy of ML installer in USB stick for future usage.
I guess the only way around this is getting someone to just install Lion or ML, if Internet recovery doesn't work.

Try booting into Internet Recovery mode (booting whilst holding down the command, option and R keys). It will take a while to load as you're booting from Apple's servers across the Internet.
Once there, use Disk Utility to erase the "Macintosh HD" partition. After the drive is formatted try reinstalling the OS.
    Good luck,

  • Could not find installation information for this machine for lion

could not find installation information for this machine for lion after trying to reinstall lion ona new MacBook pro that come with lion

I guess Lion Internet Recovery has still some issues, maybe it's just my internet connection at home, but yesterday and this morning I was trying to restore Lion at home and the remaining time was of 54+ hours, and it never get to be less than 50 when it crashed..
I shut my computer down and headed to my office and once here, the remaining time showed as 1 and a half hour.
I finally was able to restart my Macbook Pro.
Maybe my router (at home), or mi ISP was blocking Lion Recovery tool or something like that... weird...
My last choice was going to take it to the AppleCare, it's good I didn't have to...
    Thanks everyone!
