Could simply replacing a fan on a graphics card cause OS issues?

OK I suppose it's a bonafide long shot that my replacing of an intermittently malfunctioning fan on a graphics card could cause OS issues, but I've had something immediately crop up after the replacement (crippling issues with Logic's 32-bit audio uinit bridge), and they effect older projects that were previously stable, so I figured I'd ask for the heckuvit.
Repairing permissions hasn't helped - I'm just starting to ponder whether to reset PRAM, reset SMC, boot from an HD clone, try reinstalling the old fan, etc., in order to figure out the problem....
BTW - the graphics card is an Nvidia GT120.

Go out and buy an Apple ATI 5770.
What requirements does Logic have for video, and are you still on 10.6.8?
The GT120 is 512MB but low-end card.

  • Replacement for msi geforce 9500gs graphics card

Need, REPLACEMENT FOR MSI GeForce 9500GS Graphics Card. On HP m9510f Desktop. I didn't replace while under warranty.

JudyInTexas wrote "No way that will fit. There is a PCI Express card next to the video card and no empty slots on the Elite 9340f"

That model "9340f" does come with the geforce 9500gs graphics card, according to this page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01465973&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=374...

  • Replacement G5 won't recognize graphics card for iMovie

Here's what's going on: I just bought a used, replacement G5 Tower on eBay and moved the HD from my dead G5 to it. Booted up fine, and everything works - EXCEPT iMovie! I get a dialogue box that says:
*Your computer contains a graphics card which may not support iMovie.*
iMovie requires a "Quartz Extreme Compatible" graphics card. Certain iMovie features such as Themes, Ken Burns Photos, and Video FX may not work properly with your graphics card."
I tried it anyway and it will not play any clips. It shows a still of the thumbnails, and you hear the sound track being played, but no video footage is shown (black screen). I tried this several ways, including importing a clip from another project to a new project. Nothing changed.
How could this be? Did my eBay-bought G5 possibly have a different graphics card installed? What's going on? I need to resume my video projects!

  • Fan noise after graphic card changed - Qosmio F10-101

Two months ago i have had my graphic card changed from nvidia fx 5700 to nvidia geforce go 6600.
from my laptop toshiba qosmio f10-101. After changing the old graphic card there is a fan noise that starts and stops every 2 minutes , that it drives me crazy every time i'm hear it.
Can somebody tell me if this noise is natural and if he/she knows if the specific card is noisy in every laptop? or If there are any ways to disappear this noise or increase in the maximum speed the noise.??

  • Mac Pro Graphics Card causing freezes?

    Hi there,
My 1st Gen Mac Pro keep freezing...most times requiring a restart. The freezes seem to occur when 'using' the graphics card (Nvidia 7300GT). Have completely reinstalled OSX and it still happens.
Hardware Test doesn't bring up a problem with the graphics card, but there are some weird black glitches which appear on text and also some windows acquire the ability to rub others out...? Also, on turning on, the computer sometimes shows just red, green random patches of colour. The problems seem to be getting gradually worse.
Monitor is fine (have tested with another and the same thing happens). The freezes have happened happen when doing the following...
    1. Orbiting in Sketchup
    2. Changing between windows in Finder
    3. Scrolling through the Console Window (ironically in a failed attempt to find out what was wrong...)
    4. Using the Space bar on a file on look at it quickly.
Does this sound like the GPU is shot? I have ordered a new 8800GT from the Apple Store in the meantime (we could always put it in another Mac Pro).
Has anyone encountered a similar problem before and if so, was there a fix?
    Thanks,
n.b. the Mac Pro is not covered by AppleCare and is out of warranty.

Actually, the other thing which makes me suspicious is the appearance of the word 'nvidia' in the kernel panic log

  • Graphics card/logic board issues: Macbook Pro Freezing during Apple Hardware Test!

I have a macbook pro that was working fine then the screen started acting funny. It would sometimes "tile" up where you would see the same issue repeated over and over on the screen and then computer would freeze. Sometimes the screen would start to have a strobing look and then freeze. I thought the computer was crashing but once the screen froze but the processor was still running. I knew the computer was still processing because I was streaming a video online and the audio from the video continued to download and play event though the screen was frozen.
I went to the apple store and they said they think it sounds like failure of the hardrive, graphics card, display, logic board. A new hard drive was just put in the computer about 4-6 weeks ago, and if it is the other issues could be $500-$800+ to repair. I tried to use the Apple Hardware test (non-extended test) but it keeps freezes at 2 min 32 secs every time when it starts "testing the main logic board"....
Has anyone seen anything like this and have another way to test what the problem could be? Thanks!

I know you're in denial, but it really does sound like the motherboard or graphics board which is integrated with the motherboard.  Yes, fixing these things will cost almost as much as a new MacBook Pro.  Get a new one, take the HDD out of your old one, and start over again.

  • Is my weedy graphics card causing problems in Soundtrack Pro?

Newcomer to Soundtrack Pro here, just getting to grips with what I can tell is a very powerful application, but I have a very basic question.
I am running a relatively old G5, still with its factory standard graphics card -- nVidia GeForce FX 5200 64MB VRAM -- yet somehow I have been able to get by, first in Final Cut Express for a couple of years and more recently for the last year in Final Cut Studio.
My latest project was very ambitious, at least for me: a 13-minute short film shot in DVCPro HD, for which I upgraded to Final Cut Studio. There was a steep learning curve, but I struggled on and got by with my 64MB VRAM. Then I really hit a wall when it came to the sound mix in Soundtrack Pro. I had more than 70 tracks and it was murder, dropping frames and stuttering. I bought a new external 500 GB hard drive to mix to and that improved things a little, but it was agonizingly slow with terrible audio drop frame playback problems and has resulted in a very uneven mix.
If I finally bite the bullet and invest in a better graphics card -- the 256MB GeForce 6800 Ultra was recommended to me, but they are expensive and hard to come by -- will that help the performance in Soundtrack Pro? I am not sure if it's that, or my inexperience in laying out such lot of tracks that is causing me this log jam. It has been frustrating, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi, Jim --
Thanks again for the note above. A month later, I have finally found some time to get back to my short film, trying to improve the mix in SoundtrackPro. I've been looking forward to this, because your advice seemed like a great idea. It seems obvious to me now that I should not have tried to mix my sound with my Final Cut Pro media on one drive and my STP file on another. However, I still can't get STP to work for me. Here is what I tried:
I copied all my FCP media (186 GB) from my my (232 GB) internal drive to my 500GB external drive, where I previously mixed the sound into a (62.5 MB) STP file. I then placed all my internal drive media in a new renamed folder, so STP would not get confused and go looking for it there. When I tried to open my STP file, I spent 20 minutes guiding it to find the migrated media in its new home on my 500GB external drive. I did this three times, and each time STP crashed just before it opened.
I don't have room on my internal drive to use STP to mix my FCP media there. I only have 41.GB available, which brings me back to my original problem of severe latency and dropping frames.
My last option, it seems to me, is to forget my old STP mix completely, start over on my external drive by opening my FCP source material there and use that to create a new STP file on the external drive, doing the entire mix all over from scratch. Do you think that could work, or is there some other basic workflow issue I am overlooking?
The good news is my short film has now been accepted into its first film festival -- I sent them a screener DVD made directly from FCP through Compressor. I guess I could lower my sights and use that for festival screening in a less-than-ideal mix. But that would be a shame because I put several hundred hours into Soundtrack Pro, but the levels are all over the place because I could not control the mix.
One thing I have learned: I have newfound respect for mixing and the sound editor's craft!

  • Switching from ATI to NVIDIA graphic card caused initscript to break

First off, I want to apologize for having to use a random BugMeNot account but the "What is the output of "date -u +%W$(uname)|sha256sum|sed 's/\W//g'"?" question is literally impossible for me to answer as my Arch Linux system will not boot up.
Well, that aside, I've run into a relatively serious problem. I used to have an ATI card in my system, using the catalyst driver and catalyst-hook to make sure it would keep working after kernel updates but then disaster stroke. My power supply died and dragged my graphic card down with it. After bringing it to a PC store for repair, I now have the NVIDIA GeForce GTX550 Ti card in it. All fine and well, until I wanted to start Arch Linux to remove my catalyst driver and install the NVIDIA one. I started the system, the initscript started to run, did a small part of it's tasks and while processing UDev events it started to spit errors regarding noveau and refused to boot up. (It only showed those errors for a very short time, so it's hard to get the exact error message. I've typed it over from an image I took with my mobile phone and the blurry image may make it possible for this to contain typos)
    Error message:

    Things I have tried:
    - Starting Arch Linux fallback
    - Starting Arch Linux on runlevel 1
    - Shouting at Arch Linux in frustration
However, all three things resulted in the exact same issue.
If anyone knows what to do or has even the slightest hint, I'd love to know.
Thanks in advance and have a nice day,
    - TheLastProject

Hm, I'd try to put the nvidia card out and to plug the gfx cable into the socket of your onboard graphics chip, if any.
Then boot into runlevel 3 (text mode) and uninstall the ati drivers. Poweroff, put your nv-card in, boot and install Xorg and the appropriate nvidia driver (just follow the wikis).
If you can't boot into rl3 at all however, edit the grub's command line (or "kernel line") and add single at the and. After booting into runlevel 1 as a single user this way, enter init 3 for rl3. Finally edit /etc/inittab accordingly. -- Alternatively you can edit /etc/inittab with booting your Arch cd, and being chroot'ed.

  • Is anyone still having discrete graphics card problems after replacement

Is anyone still having discrete graphics card problems after replacement?
Macbook Pro eligible for replacement through Apple program.
Submitted my computer 2 days before program came into effect.
They replaced card or logic board with same original model: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB
Issued me a refund check for my repair.
Seems to have some noticeable issues, fan running more than usual again, and temporary graphic lines,
but disappear too fast before a screen dump...
Is anyone who has participated in the replacement program received a different graphic card for
Model Macbook Pro 17" (late 2011)
    Thank you for the reply.

Unfortunately I have yet to call AppleCare because I am on a project for 3 weeks and cannot be without my laptop during that period....
Until that time I am trying to figure out what I can do to protect the Palm Rest/Mouse Pad area of my Macbook once they either fix it or give me a new one. Has anyone had any experience with either of these products that can provide some input as to whether they are good or bad?

Does anyone have a link on how to replace the heatsink on a graphics card? I'm not even sure if it can be done.

You did not mention the 700's model #. Saying you own an HP 700 is like stating I own a Chevy.

    Hi John,
Video cards in TiBooks are soldered onto the logic board, and cannot be upgraded.

  • T61p graphic card problem

    My laptop is T61p, 8891.
I'm referring to the Document ID: MIGR-69684(http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-69684), it says:

    I have two questions here:
1, My laptop is out of warranty, can I still ask to replace the motherboard replaced for free, or I need to pay?
2, Actually I didn't encounter such problem as I seldom "doing graphics intensive processing" (the heaviest job with my graphic card is to play Rise of Nation and Need for Speed 11), do I still need to consider to replace the motherboard or the graphic card to avoid the risk?
    Please please advise! Thank you!

I just realized, that I'm also experiencing this issue.
When I run CUDA application (GPU Load is up to 99% according to GPU-Z) after a while I get error mentioned here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-69684.
It really annoyed me, because I need my computer to smoothly handle CUDA computing (I thought it would)
I've got T61 7664 with Quadro NVS 140M. I've got 3 year limited warranty and this is second year I'm using my T61.
What should I do? Ship it to service center? Will my laptop be repaired free of charge?
you could call lenovo service and see what they suggest.

  • Unreadable graphics card

i recently installed a new graphics card, a dual-x r9 270x Radeon graphics card. When I turned on the screen there was a black screen saying there was an error with one of the cooling fans.I disregarded the message and installed the software for the card and wanted to see if the card worked. I started playing a game and within an hour the game started acting funny and I noticed the tower was putting out a lot of heat. I turned off the computer as quickly as possible and let it cool down. When I opened the tower I found out that one of the connectors from the power supply to the card was not connected all the way so I fixed it. When I turned on the computer I got two beeps and a third long one and found out it meant an unreadable graphics card... I've tried cleaning it, removing it and making sure the connections are plugged in. I can't seem to get it to work.
Can someone tell me if my graphics card is no good anymore or if I can maybe fix it

    Hi,
"unreadable graphics card".???????   Never heard of much as message.
Why would you try cleaning a brand new graphics card?
I remember reading a post on another forum similar to this post and the poster elected to replace the PC and the graphics card.

  • Graphics card crashing

I have a 2007 Mac Pro.  A couple years ago my graphics card failed and I replaced it with the Apple graphics card upgrade.  In the last couple of months I have experienced a problem where I will randomly lose the signal to the displays all of the sudden.  The only way to fix it is to hard reset.  This happens more qickly and frequently when running a second monitor.

You said you could only fix it with a power-button off and a re-boot.
Much less traumatic, and sometimes successful, is to put your Mac to sleep, even for a few seconds, and then wake it.
You can do this "blind" regardless of your settings using Control-Eject. This brings up this old Dialog box (whether you can actually see it on not). The letter S puts your Mac to sleep. The next key you type wakes it again. Try it now, before you have a probelm.
