Could the old outlets in my buildings be causing the issues with my imac?

After recieving an i-mac I had every single possible problem go wrong with the computer. Every IT person, genius bar employee and fellow mac users were stumped. Recieved a refund and upgraded to a newer i-mac only to start having the same problems. Looking at all the controls in the situation I have begun to wonder could the outlets in the building I work be causing the problems. I recently heard that if the outlets are old and dont supply the proper wattage or something like this it can cause random failures on Macs. Am I crazy or should I just stop using computers?

You just might have a bad ground in your building or lack of ground.
At the point where power comes into the building a stake is driven at least four feet in the ground and then a wire attached to your breaker box. The round lug and the big flat lug should be connected to the breaker box where service enteres the building. The small lug is the hot connection also connected to a breaker in your box. If this is not the case you will have problems.
You can buy an inexpensive tester at your home store to check the wiring of your outlets. Your Mac doesn't draw a huge amount of power so I would doubt it's a lack of power however low voltage can cause problems but you would notice problems with other appliances in your home.
Get the three pronged tester check your outlets for correct wiring. If you or someone knows how to use a volt meter, check the voltage especially the outlet for the IMac.
If to many devices are connected on the same circuit you can have problems. Refrigerators and other hard start appliances can cause a sag of voltage. Try a different circuit.
If you feel funny about electricity or you detect ground faults or low voltage, by all means call an electrician.
Your phone/DSL or cable connection should also be grounded so have that checked out as well. Hope this helps.

The startup disk may need repairing ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.

You should have a backup in the first place. If you don't, buy an external drive (they're inexpensive these days) and make a Time Machine or a clone backup (using Carbon Copy Cloner).
Then take your machine to your local Apple Store or an AASP and let them diagnose the computer. See if they can isolate what may possibly be making the 'clicking' sound.

  • Didnt read the issues with ios5 until i've done my update. I ve restored my iphone 4, 3 times, and till now it is locked in a loop of the apple logo, loading

Didnt read the issues with iOS5 until i've updated my iPhone 4. Restored 3 times and it is still locked in a loop of - Apple logo, loading, and a flash of "...restore successful...few steps away..." and buzz. Please help

At the end of a Restore, you will be asked if you want the current iPhone to be synched as a New iPhone or use the current iPhone's settings. Selecting the former since to have solved the messaging problem. If u have done back-up of the "old" iPhone on iTunes, then your New iPhone will be the "old" iPhone too after synching with iTunes :)

  • I moved from the UK to the US with my iMac. What do I need to buy for the UK iMac to work in the US? A power convertor? A plug convertor? or Both?

I moved from the UK to the US with my iMac. What do I need to buy for the UK iMac to work in the US? A power convertor? A plug convertor? or Both?  I had previously read that you only need a plug convertor (three prong to two prong).  But I'm terrified that my iMac will blow up if I only use a plug convertor and not some sort of voltage convertor (Transformer).

I'm not really hardware tech savy - is it easy to pop out the UK power cable and plug in the US power cable? Or do I need to get someone like an iMac support guy to do this? And because of the voltage difference, is there something built into the iMac that takes care of the voltage difference for me?  Thanks!!

    Hey Etti101,
I'd start off your troubleshooting process by deleting and redownloading the songs:
If iTunes in the Cloud is available in your country, try the following steps to resolve the issue:
Delete the purchased song that is exhibiting the problem from your iTunes library.
Click on the Purchased link in the iTunes Store to view your previously purchased music.
Download your previously purchased song from this list.
via: Songs in iTunes may not play back completely

  • FR Studio - Is there a workaround for the issue with referencing data from a grid with a different DB connection and different # of dimensions?

    Hi,
I am trying to reference a column in a different grid with a different database connection. I did some research in the forums, and it seems like this is a known issue with FR Studio. The issue is that if the 2 different database connections have different # of dimensions, then the reference will throw an error.
For example, what I'm trying to do is below:
In grid2.column[A], I have the following formula:
    grid1.column[A]
    The result is an error.
The ultimate goal is to have a basic variance formula in the grid between grid1 and grid2, which have different database connections with a different # of dimensions. Is there a workaround at all to this bug? The example of the basic formula is below:
    grid1.column[A] - grid2.column[A]
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Tiffany

Thanks for the detailed response Mike.
The issue with trying it in Grid1 vs Grid2 is that Grid1's DB connection has more dimensions than Grid2's DB connection. I can't change the DB connection to a database with more dimensions because you have to be able to map all dimensions from the existing DB connection  (Grid1) to the new DB connection (Grid2). This isn't possible, so instead I have to map Grid2 (less dimensions) to Grid1 (more dimensions). It just ignores the extra dimensions from Grid1. Does that make sense?
Thanks again for your responses. It's very much appreciated.

  • When I plug my "restored" 6 Plus, the connection with my iMac

When I plug in my "restored" 6 Plus, the connection with my iMac & iTunes is fast & smooth.  BUT, as I add more Playlists to the phone, the color wheel starts & each steps slows to 10-30 seconds.  After I restore, it's quick again.  Thoughts?  I am running Yosemite, the new iTunes and the latest iPhone 6 iOS.  This never happened with any phones up to my 5S, but has happened consistently with my 6 and 6 Plus.

I aporeciate the reply, but do recommend this if I only click & certain playlists?  I'm an album weirdo.  The more albums I manually clicked & dragged, the slower each step took (clicking the phone, hitting "add", hitting "playlists", hitting the actual playlist, the dragging it to the phone.  The more gigs of music on the phone, the more the color wheel spins with each step....but like I mentioned, after I've restored, it's very fast

Hi , I suhail khan from india and i am user of iMac system 10,1.These days i am facing the sound enabling issue with my iMac system I am not able to hear sound in my iMac system. So kindly suggest me how to enable sound in my iMac . Please no the needful.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. If you've recently plugged anything into the audio-out (headphone) port, plug and unplug it a couple of times.
    2. From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Sound ▹ Output
Check the settings. The internal speakers should be selected as the output device, the Mute box should not be checked, and the volume slider should be at least halfway to the right.
    3. Look inside the headphone port. If a red light is coming from the port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a headphone mini-stereo jack of the proper size.Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
    4. Boot in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime. It will take much longer than usual. You don't have to log in; just reboot as usual (without holding any keys) when the login screen appears. (Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.)
    5. Reset the NVRAM.
    6. Reset the SMC.
    7. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data as a precaution. You won't need your backup unless something goes wrong.
    8. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

We are just users like yourself.  If Apple has stated publicly about the problems you mentioned, it will be listed on their website and/or in one of their Knowledge Base Articles.
I have a 27" & do not suffer from such a problem.  You should keep in mind that these are technical support forums. Generally, the only people posting here are those with problems. The thousands/millions without problems don't ever come here.

So, about a week ago my macbook pro started having lots of issues: wifi connectivity, slow performance, sound issues, spotlight wasn't working. After going through the issues with apple support, they decided the best course of action was to erase the hard drive and do a reinstall. Since I have a recent backup this seemed like a good enough option. They were kind enough to send me a copy of the snow leopard disk to do the install since we couldn't get it to complete through the disk utility. Not sure why, since it says we are fully connected, it just never completed.
Anyway, so now that you have the background here is the new issue. The macbook pro keeps spitting out the disk I'm trying to install from. Disk utility and using the 'Startup Disk' function from the apple menu doesn't read the disk.
Can anyone suggest a solution to this vexing problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Jeremy.Laurin,
have you tried agb76’s approach here?

having trouble with my Airport Utility not supporting either of my Airports Expresses or Basestation. Do i have to update Firmware of airports or is the issue with my version of Utility which i believe is the latest. Thank you.

AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion will not support the older versions of the AirPort Express.....model numbers A1084 and A1088. Check on the side of the Express for the model number.
In addition, AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion will not support the older "round" or "dome" shaped versions of the AirPort Extreme.
Can you check to see how your devices might be affected?
