Could thin firewire cable harm Audio quality?

Hi Guys, I'm in the middle of a custom 1 box midi controller/interface build , & need to span a gap of about 25cm inside the controller box with a 6pin-6pin firewire cable.
Space is ultratight, so I wonlt be able to fit even the shortest folded 'standard' cable in, so I was considering a retractable 6pin/6pin firewire cable (like this - http://www.retractacable.com/productinfo.php?productsid=37 )
As this seems massively thinner than any firewire cable I've had, I was just a little concerned that this may impact audio quality? - Can anyone advise if this is the case?
Thanks
Adam

To old a topic to reply to (it's archived) - but for anyone wondering the same, I found the retractable firewire cable when it arrived wouldn't actually power up the interface, so had to go with the shortest regular FW cable I could find

  • I need to transfer information through firewire cable and could not remember how it works, please, help

Please help, I need urgently to transfer information through firewire cable and I could not remember how it was that I do it. I've connected the computers and restarted one of them by pushing T on startup but it did not work.

Shut down both Macs.  Connect them via FW cable.
On the Mac you want to copy FROM.  Start up but make sure you are holding down the T key as soon as you press the power button.  And keep holding down the T key until the FireWire emblem appears on the screen - that's the indicator that the Mac is in Target Disk Mode (TDM).  Note: if you release the T key too soon the Mac won't go into Target Disk Mode.
Start up the second Mac.  The first Mac will appear in the Finder as a disk.  You can use the Finder to copy whatever you want from the Mac that's in TDM.
When you're done, shut down both Macs.  The Mac that's in Target Disk Mode can be shut down by holding down the power button until it turns off.

  • How does firewire cable affect quality?

I am a new Mac user and new to video editing. I just recently purchased a MacBook and plan to begin editing my many many hours of miniDV video.
To transfer the video from my camera to the Macbook, I pruchased an inexpensive cable (around $5) from a bargain internet site. I have seen cables for as much as $40 at the local Circuit City.
How important is the firewire cable to maintain the quality of the video? Before I begin importing my video onto my new 500GB external drive I want to make sure I am retaining the quality.
    Thanks!

    Thanks Klaus1 and Matt!
I successfully imported one tape onto my Macbook. Everything seems to work fine with the cable. I can control the camcorder from the Mac and the video looks good.
I really like how iMovie breaks the tape into several clips. I thought I was going to get one large file that I would have to parse myself!

  • Horrible Audio Quality from Airport Express

Last night, I purchased an Airport Express for the sole purpose of using it as a client on my already exsiting 802.11g wireless network to play my iTunes on my living room stero. It took me a while to get the configuration set up correctly, but I finally have it so that it is communicating with the network and sending information and iTunes to the AirPort.
My problem is that the audio quality on my stero system is horrendous (i.e. unlistenable). It sounds like I'm listening to a radio broadcast from way out of range.
Here's the odd part - the connector cable to my stereo works fine with other audio devices (i.e. my iPod) - and the Airport Express works fine with just my headphones. So, there is no problem hooking into the stereo and no problem with range or communication between my iTunes, network and the Airport.
I think this issue problably has something to do with the levels from the Airport unit into my stereo, but I don't know exactly what my next move should be. The only thing I'm quite convinced about is there must be a very simple answer to this problem which has had me pulling my hair out for hours now.
If anyone could suggest something that could help, it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hi cozmocramernyc,
    I am glad it works.
I use the Digital Optical cable instead the standard cable and the audio is Awesome.

  • Lync 2013 and Audiocodes ESBC Mediant 1000 - poor audio quality

Bit of an odd issue that I've been looking into for the past few weeks - our part of our change from a pilot Lync install to production we have had an Audiocodes ESBC Mediant 1000 installed to serve as a Media Gateway between the Lync Mediation Server and
our Gamma Telecom provided SIP trunk.
However under certain situations my users are reporting exceptionally poor audio quality with the Lync server reporting website reporting a very high packet loss and our ESBC reporting a high 'Average voice delay' (often greater than 80ms).
I have established that by taking these steps the issue can be replicated with almost impunity-
Make incoming call from mobile phone (or landline) - pickup call on Lync Deskphone (CX300/CX500/CX600 and VVX410 all have the same).
Begin a consultative call transfer with an external (another mobile/landline) or internal number which places the incoming call on hold.
Complete the call transfer - at this point the audio quality is still as expected.
Begin a new call from a Lync phone to an external number - at this point the audio quality for the phone call that has been transferred and the new call instantly degrades.
    My basic topology is-
    Fibre Leased Line - Cat5e cable - Router - Cat5e cable - DMZ Switch - Cat5e cable - Audiocodes Mediant 1000 - Cat5e cable - Servers VLAN - Switch - Fibre - Core switch (layer 3) - Fibre - VMWare Host (ESXI v5) - Lync Server (VMNET 3 adapter)
I have been able to replicate the issue when using both TCP and TLS between the Lync Mediation Server and the Audiocodes gateway.
Over the next day or so I will be looking to get the SIP trunk connected directly to the Lync server to see if that makes any difference (ruling out the Mediant 1000 as a possible cause) but in the meantime does anyone have any ideas as to what could be
    causing this most weird situation?

    Hi,
Please disassociate the Edge Server from the Mediation and check the delay again.
Please check port 3478 to the internal interface of the Edge Server from all internal clients (including the Mediation Server).

  • Mac Mini: poor audio quality

I have my Mac Mini connected to my plasma (yes, doing the HTPC thing). I'm finding the audio output is really poor, regularly scratchy and lacks loudness in the volume.
I have tested the Mini versus my Macbook, using the same source file (a DIVX movie), Plex as the player, connected to my TV. The Macbook is fine, the Mini has the issues mentioned above.
I have tried iTunes, eyeTV and DVD Player on the Mini - all have the same issues. Seeing the same setup works fine with my Macbook, I take it the audio cable and audio amplifier in the TV are all fine.
So this leaves the issue with the Mac Mini
Any thoughts on what the issue could be and how to go about fixing it would be much appreciated.

Yes, using the combo optical/headphone out, connected to my TV via RCA inputs.
Reducing to 3 makes its so quiet that I have to blast the volume on my TV in order to hear anything.
I don't have a high-end set of headphones, but the headphone quality is good unless I have the volume up loud, then it distorts. Some people have hinted that the Mac Mini has a headphone output only where as the other Macs have a line out. If this is the case than the Mac Mini audio will only be good via headphones or an amp with optical input.
So inputting via an analog amp is either out of the question OR my Mini has a hardware fault!

  • How to avoid Firewire cable hum

    Hi,
I am using a Firewire external drive to record from a video capture device that feeds into my Powerbook via a USB cable. I am noticing hum when I have both of these cables connected. I have noticed this before whenever I have a Firewire cable attached.
Are there Firewire cables that are shielded or are otherwise immune to causing hum? The two Firewire cables I have now are clear plastic and I can see a braided silver covering beneath it. Even though the Firewire and USB cables can come in on different sides of the Powerbook, I am still getting hum. I cannot separate the cables much more than they are now.
If there aren't cables that will prevent hum I am (bad word here). I have to record video to the Firewire external drive. I tried using a USB drive and had all kinds of problems.
    Thank you.
    John L

Thanks but you say 'in my USB audio interface', meaning in this case either the Powerbook USB port or the USB cable I am using for the capture? Would that explain the hum with the older CD burner? The hum occurred with a previous Powerbook when I used that CD burner. I haven't used that CD burner with this Powerbook.
I too am using the EyeTV, in this case the 250 Plus. I will write to them over the weekend since I wrote a BIG note to them recently and I doubt they're in over the weekend, and I wouldn't want to bother them then anyway.
I also have a somewhat funky arrangement for my incoming audio to the EyeTV converter/computer. I'll work to be sure nothing is shorting there. (I have one mini to RCA cable that I use an A/B switch to change from audio in and out to/from the stereo, that connects to the Powerbook. I put the EyeTV box inbetween the stereo and the computer so I could keep this arrangement for feeding audio to/from the computer to/from the stereo. It's worked fine with no hum without any firewire devices connected. That audio cable is not shielded. Very susceptible to (what, RF?) from firewire cables I guess... I might want to rethink those connections and get shielded ones. Do they make shielded RCA cables? Monster probably does = expensive.

  • Firewire 410 & Recording Audio

    Hi all,
I just got a Firewire 410 to replace my old mixer setup (way too noisy) and it works fantastic except that, when I record vocals, the audio regions populated have a pathetic wave visual (there's almost no wave that shows up). The sound comes out at a decent level, though I may end up using the Gain plug-in, but there is just no wave to look at--it almost flatlines. When I double-click on the audio region, I get the same minimal wave.
I have phantom power turned on, XLR cable from the 410 to my Sennheiser e835, and the plug-in compresser set to 2:1 (I know, I know, I should get a hardware compressor). I never had this issue with my mixer-based setup.
Thanks in advance for nay assistance!
    PM Dual 1.8   Mac OS X (10.4)

Perhaps if you are running the unit from firewire buss power you could try switching to the other firewire cable and using the power supply that came with the 410. Perhaps it is not getting enough juice to do proper phantom and all the other functions it performs.
I suspect that the actual units vary quite a bit from the specs. Maybe it is an impedance issue? Also as you turn up the gain, you lose head room, so just as you get a good level, you also clip the take while getting little dynamic range. I've used my freinds Firepod and gotten better results with the same mics, I've bypassed the pres with good results, and I've tweaked the m-audio and gotten good enough levels, but it is no doubt a limitation. Also Had an Aardvark and a Mackie 1082, which seemed to give a little better results. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I am saying- you will fight with this balance between headroom and level.

  • Finding a 800/400 firewire cable

I bought a new macbook pro yesterday. I would have liked to get a macbook with the new graphics, but alas, no firewire for my audio interface.
So I look around the apple store for a 800/400 firewire cable. No dice.
    I call Best Buy.
    Fry's.
    University book store.
    Circuit City.
So I'm a little annoyed and waiting a few days to do any music on my computer. Hasn't firewire 800 been out for 5+ years?
If apple taketh away, shouldn't they giveth me a cable (to buy of course!!).
Anyone have any ideas where I could buy this in person?

I needed a 9 pin firewire 800 to a 4 pin firewire 400 to connect my video camera to my MBP. Apple showed me a $20 cable they had that would need an adapter that they did not sell so I would have had to get that elsewhere.
I went to monoprice.com and got a cable that did not need an adapter and paid $5 and change and that even included the shipping. Check online and I am sure you will find the cable you are looking for.

  • Maximum firewire cable length?

    Hi there,
Why do firewire cables come at a 6 foot limit? I have a joiner and am able to run my firewire audio device from twice that distance. Will this cause harm?
    thanks,
    rwa

I guess it should still work: the reason for the cable length limit is probably that the data transfers slightly more slowly when your FireWire cable is longer than six feet.

I recently moved and had to disconnect my WD My Pro Edition II 2TB external drive I had been using for backup.
Its been several months (many upgrades to the iMac software during this time), and now when I try to reconnect the external dire (Use a firewire cable) it does not recognize the drive is there.  I also tried "reloading" software from the Western Digital site, but after following all the instructions, it looks like my iMac doesn't support this software (I can't even locate it after I follow all the instructions.
Thnaks,  for anyones ideas on how I can get this working again.....

First of all, you do not really want to use their software; if you want a bootable clone, use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. If you simply want to drag and drop some files, you don't need software to do that. The important thing on any external drive is that you format/partition it correctly (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and using GUID partition scheme).
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about WD drives or their software, so I don't have any idea what kind of backup you did. Having said that, it should still recognize the external even if it's outdated. Have you tried mounting it manually in Disk Utility? If you can get it to mount, you could (worst case scenario) just drag your stuff off onto your internal and then reformat the external.

  • Poor Audio Quality in my new HP 15 R203TX

Hi I have just purchased HP pavillion 15 R2037TX laptop. It comes with 5th gen 5200U processor with 4gb ram, 2gb nvidia 820M graphics 1tb of hdd with DOS with realtek hd sound technology.  I installed win 8.1 and accordingly installed all the drivers from the official hp website. After installing audio driver I found that DTS audio control panel was installed. My laptop is working fine except one thing  I am not getting proper sound quality which i used to enjoy in my previous e038tx laptop that  too came with DTS audio. The sound is not sweet or crisp rather very hazy when playing through external subwoofer and speaker. I enjoyed clear and crisp audio quality in the same speaker and sub woofer  previously. Plus I can not understand why after realtek hd audio I get dts audio control panel. Because the audio vendor says its hardware is Realtek HD audio. Realtek has its own audio control panel which I do not find here. Whatever kindly help me how can i enjoy beautiful sound >? thanx in advance
