  • Increasing the size of the SGA

    I'm using the Oracle Enterprise Manager Database Control on a 10.2.0.4 instance running on Redhat Enterprise Linux. One of the recommendations that the AWR\ADDM always seems to give is: "Increase the size of the SGA by setting the parameter SGA_TARGET to N". I've gone through the process twice already by upping the SGA_MAX_SIZE and SGA_TARGET parameters. It's currently recommending to up it to 6176M, I have not done this yet.
    (1) Is this one of the recommendations that you would ignore within the DBCA if performance of the database seemed acceptable?
    (2) Why does it always come back from the AWR\ADDM as a recommendation?
    (3) What SQL or performance statistics does it do to determine whether the SGA is undersized and how does Oracle determine the SGA recommended size that shows up in the ADDM feedback?
    Thanks in advance...

    Truely new questions do deserve new threads. Questions that are a direct result of responses to the initial question should be asked on the same thread.
    If there has been a time gap between the last post on the initial thread and the new question coming to mind then a new thread is probably the better choice.
    To answer the question asked if the database is not suffering ORA-04031 errors and performance is OK then I would ignore the recommendation to increase the size of the SGA yet again.
    What you might want to do first is reivew how the sga is being used (v$sgastat) and look for bad code technique that leads to needing memory, i.e., the use of SQL that passes constants to Oracle in what would otherwise be the same SQL statement if a bind variable was used and excessive use of Dynamic SQL when again bind variables could have been used in the SQL.

    Hi,
    Many Thanks Charles
    Oracle does not recommend using the SORT_AREA_SIZE parameter unless the instance is configured with the shared server option. Oracle recommends that you enable automatic sizing of SQL working areas by setting PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET instead. SORT_AREA_SIZE is retained for backward compatibility."
    --How can i know the instance is configured with the shared server option or not?This might be a tough question to answer. A shared server configuration may be enabled, but the clients may still connect using dedicated sessions, in which case PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET would still apply.
    From
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/dynviews_2088.htm
    V$SESSION includes a column named SERVER which will contain one of the following for each of the sessions: DEDICATED, SHARED, PSEUDO, or NONE. As a quick check, you could query V$SESSION to see if any sessions are connected using a shared server connection.
    From:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/manproc.htm
    There are several parameters which are used to configure shared server support, as well as several views to monitor shared server.
    As Robert mentioned, when the WORKAREA_SIZE_POLICY is set to AUTO, the SORT_AREA_SIZE setting is not used, unless a shared server configuration is in use.
    --What default value is WORKAREA_SIZE_POLICY and SORT_AREA_SIZE ?From:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/initparams157.htm
    "Setting PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET to a nonzero value has the effect of automatically setting the WORKAREA_SIZE_POLICY parameter to AUTO. This means that SQL working areas used by memory-intensive SQL operators (such as sort, group-by, hash-join, bitmap merge, and bitmap create) will be automatically sized. A nonzero value for this parameter is the default since, unless you specify otherwise, Oracle sets it to 20% of the SGA or 10 MB, whichever is greater."
    Actually I am facing performence issue since long time till now i did not get the solution even i have raised SRs but i could not.When the issue occur system seems hang.what i monitored whenever hdisk0 and hdisk1 use 100% the issue occur.
    Regards,
    SajidWhen you say that you have had a performance issue for a long time, is it a performance problem faced by a single SQL statement, a single user, a single application, or everything on the server? If you are able to identify a single user, or SQL statement that is experiencing poor performance, I suggest starting with a 10046 trace at level 8 (wait events) or level 12 (wait events and bind variables) to determine why the execution appears to be slow. If you have not yet determined a specific user or SQL statement that is experiencing performance problems, you might start with either a Statspack Report or an AWR Report (AWR requires a separate license).
    If you believe that temp tablespace usage may be a contributing factor to the performance problem, you may want to periodically run this query, which will indicate currently in use temp tablespace usage:
    {code}
    SELECT /*+ ORDERED */
    TU.USERNAME,
    S.SID,
    S.SERIAL#,
    S.SQL_ID,
    S.SQL_ADDRESS,
    TU.SEGTYPE,
    TU.EXTENTS,
    TU.BLOCKS,
    SQL.SQL_TEXT
    FROM
    V$TEMPSEG_USAGE TU,
    V$SESSION S,
    V$SQL SQL
    WHERE
    TU.SESSION_ADDR=S.SADDR
    AND TU.SESSION_NUM=S.SERIAL#
    AND S.SQL_ID=SQL.SQL_ID
    AND S.SQL_ADDRESS=SQL.ADDRESS;
    {code}
    The SID and SERIAL# returned by the above could then be used to enable a 10046 trace for a session. The SQL_ID (and CHILD_NUMBER from V$SESSION in recent releases) could be used with DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY_CURSOR to return the execution plan for the SQL statement.
    You could also take a look in V$SQL_WORKAREA_ACTIVE to determine which, if any, SQL statement are resulting in single-pass, or multi-pass executions, which both access the temp tablespace.

  • Is it possible to increase the size of the menu bar?

    My friend just got a nice new 27" iMac. On such a large display the menu bar disappears into oblivian when you sit far enough back to actually use such a large display. Is it possible to increase the size of the top menu bar? I had a look around at preferences and couldn't find anything.
    Thanks in advance

    In short, no. Just found five or six threads asking this. Here's one.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2602785?threadID=2602785&tstart=45#12374829
    And, zooming the screen is a non-starter, because when you do that the menubar disappears entirely.

    PS Are you working on a version for the iPad and iPhone with Add Blocker? That would be great!

    Here are some zoom add-ons which might provide a workaround:

  • How do I increase the size of the text on the toolbar?

    How do I increase the size of the toolbar text, please?  For some reason, it's now very tiny, and everything I do only increases the font size of whichever web sites I access (which is not what I'm wanting to accomplish).
    Thanks in advance for any help in this. Actually, I'm wondering what I might have done that would make the toolbar so tiny?

    Do  you mean the menu bar at the very top of your screen?
    If so, open System Preferences > Displays > Display > Scaled
    Try a different resolution.

  • How can I set timings to increase the size of an image in a Keynote presentation?

    I know how to use inspector to bring in and fade out text boxes, but at the end of a slide I have a graphic (that is at the bottom of the slide during the rest of the slide) that I want to increase the size of to take up the entire slide.  How can I do this?
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
    The effect you're looking for is 'Scale'
    In Keynote '09, 5.1.1 select the graphic.
    Click Inspector in the tool bar, Build Inspector (3rd icon from the left), (Build In and Build Out are both set to None for this step) Effect, Action, and then Scale.
    It rescales ('zooms') the selected item (image) up or down from 0% to 200%
    Clicking on the More Options button at the bottom opens a drawer to the left, and gives you more control over how the build occurs, whether they happen automatically, timed, or when you click, and re-order build steps.
    At 200%, double the original size, resolution could be a problem. There is a workaround, because it also scales smaller, down to 0%. So I would scale the graphic down 'small' as the first step to fit at the bottom, (even hide it behind a background-colored box) as you scale it down, and then at the end, scale up to full size to fill the screen at 'normal' resolution.
    In the attached example, I use a 'scale' up to go from 100% to 130% on a map, and use arrows and a flashing line to point out the road where a specific business is located with 12 steps. Some elements in my slides have been intentionally obscured. For simplicity, I've eliminated showing any steps but the initial title and the scale.

  • How to increase the size of text boxes in FCPX without stretching the text inside?

    How to increase the size of text boxes in FCPX without stretching the text inside?

    There are two basic Title formats — I should say Layouts — available:  Text (plain) and Paragraph.  (The plain text version usually does not appear with the blue dot controls — those generally appear for the paragraph type control.)
    If the Title is using a Paragraph layout, it's like having a mini version of Text Edit available inside FCPX. You can tell when you click on the text (when the title is selected) -- a rectangle will appear around the text like so:
    double clicking on the text will give you the bounds controls which you can use to redefine the text area without distorting the text. Once selected, notice the button that appears in the top right corner of the canvas:
    Pressing that will activate the ruler. You can right click on the ruler and add Tab Stops (left, right, center and decimal.)
    So if the title uses paragraph formatting, you can create a very WYSIWYG type of display text (use the Text inspector to alter text selections within the paragraph bounds.)

  • How to increase the size of piechart in ssrs?

    Hi how to increase the size of piechart in my design mode its showing very large one,when running/preview mode its displaying very small, i have total 10 values to dispaly in the legend series values,So here i have set the visibulity option to out side ,
    so if the pie chart is dispalying small ,the values of the legend will come in one place and ,so can you suggest me how to increase the size of my chart and how would i show my legend values separatly without closing one by one.
    Can some one please help me out for this..

    Hi Ychinnari,
    According to your description that you want increase the size of pie chart in the design mode to make all the ten values in the legend series to display, you have do some setting but the pie chart still display very small and not display some of the
    values, right?
    I have tested on my local environment and found that the display of the chart legend value can be effect by many factor: the size of the chart, chart area position and chart legend position.
    Details steps below for your reference about how to set the properties to make all the legend values display correctly:
    Select the Chart properties and expand the size and increase the values for the width and the height, then preview to see if all the legend values are display.
    If this do little help, the problem due to the chart area position and chart legend position need to reset too.
    Select the chart area properties and expand the CustomPosition under the Position, choose the Enabled to true and  reset the Width, height of the pie chart.
    Reset this properties to make the chart area more Narrow, thus we can set the Legend area more wider.
    Select the chart Legend properties and expand the CustomPosition under the Position, choose the Enabled to true to reset the Width, height of the chart Legend
    Reset this properties to make the Legend area more bigger (wider and higher) thus it will display more values in the Legend area.
    If your problem still exists, please feel free to ask.

  • How to increase the size of a String[]

    I'm using a String[] variable that I do not know the maximal size, but i need to increase its size, how can I do that
    ex:
    String[] buffer = new String[]
    int i= 0;
    while (<condition>) {
    ???? // increase the size
    buffer [ i ] =.....
    }

    There is no way in Java to actually increase or decrease the size of an existing array. You'll have to create a new array of the appropriate size and copy elements of the first array into it, for example by using System.arraycopy.
    Or you could give your array a big enough size at start, so you won't have to do the above.
    A better idea would be to use a collection instead of an array (like an ArrayList) in the first place.
