Couldn't start Back to My Mac

I have unchecked it, re-checked it, signed out of iCloud, rebooted, but no matter what,  I can't seem to get Back to My Mac to start.
It just says "Couldn't Start Back to My Mac"  Clicking details says turn off back to my mac, and reboot, and then try again. (Doesn't work).
Clean Yosemite install.  Server running on it.
Here is a copy of the all message log from the console during trying to start it.
Anyone got any ideas, wouldn't be helpful cause this is above me.

  • What can I do to start back up in Mac Leopard OSX?

What can I do to start back up in Mac Leopard OSX?
My Original Purpose: Partition Mac HD to original state after installing Windows XP via BootCamp Because I wasn't using XP. To do this I know I have to Boot from Leopard install disc to access Disc Utility to Re-Partition hard drive.
Action Taken: Insert Leopard install Disc, went to System Preference> Startup>Selected Leopard Install Disc.
Problem: Install Disc ejected while switching to Windows XP(+failing optical drive+). Then I received Lock asking for Root password. Unable to remember root. Would change root if I could boot from startup disc but unable to at this point. So I shut down by holding power button, rebooted holding down "c", now I'm getting folder with question mark in it. Searched Post here, found out that external drive can be used, but it has to be firewire. Pull out external LaCIE external DVD, insert Leopard install disc, Held down "c", only get gray screen. No lock, no folder with question mark it.
What can I do to start back up in Mac OSX? I've read post here on but nothing specific to problems i'm having. Don't wanna waste anyone time, but if you could just paste a link on my post or reply if this message isn't clear. Thank You.

On start up is there any key commands that I can use to get me back to Mac OSX instead of inputing root password on screen?

  • Computer restarted and then couldn't boot back into the Mac OS

So I have this problem, it's tearing me up because I can't seem to figure it out. Like the title says in the subject line, I restarted my computer by holding down the power button, when it got to the Apple screen the little ring kept spinning and received the error symbol. I tried some stuff to fix it and to no prevail. I was able to boot into my Linux OS on a different partition. So that tells me that it is not a hard drive error and that it is working correctly. But I got so fed up with the whole issue that I tried to reformat it. So I got the OS disk and ran the disk utility. When the utility first starts it can see my hard drive, but when i do anything it goes away and I am not able to reformat. I need some serious help people. I cant't seem to figure this one out and it's tearing me up. I appreciate it.

I also encountered a similiar phenomena with my MacBook Pro and sent it to the Apple's warranty repair. They informed me right away that the problem occured because of the latest software update which disables SATA driver compatibility with 3rd party Hard Drives with no apple's original Firmware.
After they returned the computer (updates installed & my previous data copied to the new hard drive) it still didn't boot but showed that circle with slash after apples gray logo screen.
I've been inspecting it better since and after reinstalling operating system I managed to boot into my HD. Even though I had just reinstalled Snow Leopard, there's automatically various different problems and such.
Here's what I've noticed so far:
    1. Although I'm Admin, I have no privileges to my home folder which I can't even read. Instead of me, There's this group "Staff" which has somehow appeared (Two headed logo if you view the info of the folder) and "Staff" only has any kind of permissions to my home folder and also StartUpItems and Developer tools and Guides & Help e.g. StartUpItems permissions shows in Terminal the following: drwr-xr-x "myhomefolder" Staff. View folder info reveals only that Permissions are "Custom access" mariahj (Admin) is Custom, then Staff=Custom and Everybody=Custom. Last time, which would be before I took my laptop for repair, I tried changing these permissions through Finder's "show Info" and I were able to do nearly nothing. If I remember correctly I only were able to delete this Staff-group and when applying to enclosed items, these small windows appeared one on top of the another all telling that "this and this drivere wasn't installed properly, contact "somewhere"", about 40 or more windows which I had to click OK. They listed all the device drivers from graphics to bluetooth and touchpad etc. And when I restarted afterwards I couldn't get further than the gray screen with Apple before turning to that Round with slash..
    2. System Profiler's logs say something including IOHIDsystem "VBL too high --" and that During the reinstallation of the OS localhost[unknown] prevented installing any settings. (I am not connected to any device, Airport is off and so is Bluetooth.)
    3. sudo commands in Terminal e.g. chflags -L /Volumes/HD/, chmod 0 /Volumes..., and sudo chusr... Did nothing after requiring my password.
At the moment I managed to get access to my homefolder's data just by Turning FileVault encryption off. This also seems to have given me some of my permissions back.
SOLUTION TO THE Getting stuck at the Blocking mark after the gray apple logo screen, at least for me: Install your operating system again (booting the installation cd by holding option key down when starting your laptop). You don't have to erase your data, just install the operating system.. You may wanna check your permissions using Terminal and those few logs in System profiler.. Are you usin FileVault or is there any similiar symptoms except the logo when trying to boot??
Althought Apple's authorized support / repair centre claimed the problem was in my hard drive, it wasn't obviously, since they changed my HD to a slower, but original apple FW HD, and the new one can't be broken nor defective..

  • Back to my Mac not working between Snow Leopard work iMac and Lion home iMac

I have a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac at work running OS X 10.6.8.
I have a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 iMac at home running OS X 10.7.2.
At present, I am unable to upgrade the work iMac to Lion because I need to run Intel's FORTRAN compiler, which does not yet work under Lion.
I have upgraded my MobileMe account to use iCloud on my home machine.  Because my work machine is still using Snow Leopard, I can't use iCloud on that machine just yet.
Initially, even after upgrading to iCloud on my home machine, I was able to use Screen Sharing from either computer to use the other computer.  I accidentally clicked "Turn Off Back to My Mac" in the MobileMe settings of my work machine.  When I click "Turn on Back to My Mac" to try and turn it back on, I consistently get the dialog box "Unable to start Back to My Mac     Back to My Mac could not start because of a MobileMe server error. Try again later. If this problem persists, contact MobileMe Support."  And hitting OK brings it back to the off state.  So I can not turn on Back to My Mac at work, therefore I can not connect to my work machine from home to use Screen Sharing like I want to.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?  Has anyone found out how to turn Back to My Mac back on in such a case?
Thanks for any help you can give,
    Adam

  • Can only access one Mac via Back to my Mac

I have Back to My Mac set up on my home Mac and two Macs at my office. I can successfully connect to one of the Macs at the office from home, but not the other.
Both office Macs are running Mountain Lion, have Back to My Mac enabled with the same iCloud account credentials, and are on the same LAN/router/switch. My home Mac is running 10.7.5 and cannot be upgraded to 10.8 (it's a very old Mac Pro 1,1.)
Because both office Macs are on the same LAN, those Macs can see one another in the Shared Sidebar in Finder, and I can Screen Connect that way, but I can't access the second office Mac from home for some reason.
I've tried stopping/starting Back to My Mac on the troublesome Mac numerous times (as well as my home Mac), and followed the instructions elsewhere on Apple's site to delete all the Back to my Mac Keychains and recycle the connection, but it didn't help.
Because it's a corporate network, I don't have direct access to the router settings (both work Macs complain that NAT-PMP and/or UPnP aren't on, but since I can still connect to one work Mac from home, that doesn't appear to be the problem.) Both Macs are connected exactly to the network the same way, though, so I'm confused as to why one Mac works while the other doesn't.
Are there any other settings I can check or confirm on the problematic Mac? Am I incorrect in assuming I should be able to connect to two different Macs remotely using the same iCloud account? I just assumed all the Macs I have would be connectable via Back to My Mac if they used the same credentials.
    Thanks,
    R

    Hello Robbie,
Thank you so much for the details you provided reguarding the Back to My Mac trouble you are experiencing.  You have taken some really good troubleshooting steps already, but I recommend reviewing the steps in the section titled "Troubleshooting Back to My Mac" in the following article (you can skip the steps you have already gone through):

  • This is my first mac, it is a macbook pro. i restarted it but when it started back up i saw a white screen and then it prompted me to insert the reboot disk. anyone else have this problem?

I recently bought a Macbook Pro, this is my first Mac. I restarted it, but when it started back there was a plain white screen and then it prompted me to insert the reboot disk. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a way to do this manually like with PC's?

The new Mac's came with OS X Lion 10.7 and there are no boot disks.
Since it's so new, take it back to the Apple Store and let them deal with it.
If not you can hold Command and r (as in rotten) keys down and boot the computer.
You'll be presented with a several options, including one to reinstall OS X Lion provided you have a Apple ID, which means you have to use Safari in there to set one up. To do that you need to set up a email account with Google or Yahoo. Once you get the ID, then you can download Lion and reinstall it.
It's so stupid not having a copy of the OS on hand to perform your own repairs.
Of course Apple will be happy to sell you a $69 Lion USB stick.
Like I said, take it back to the store, and try to get your money back, that will force them to think about just giving you a replacement machine that works.
Lion doesn't work really but it can be acceptable until the patches get released.

  • Mac freezes, shows grey screen then starts back up

For the past two weeks I have had the issue of my iMac suddenly freezing for a few seconds and then it turns to a grey screen for a few more seconds before it starts back up on my user area.
All programs get shut down (which is annoying as I do graphic design so I'm usually on PS or AI and lose work I've done since last save). Programs which are set to start up automatically upon login do not start up. Thankfully firefox will start back up when I click it and continue from all the tabs I had open.
I cannot seem to find a source for this to be happening... The programs which are always running when this has happened previously are: Mac Mail, finder, Messages, Spotify, Wacom Desktop Center. This morning it happened when none of my adobe programs were running.
Has anyone had the same issue or knows what's up?
I tried to go to apple support but it said I need to pay £35 for someone to answer my question.

  • HT201250 I've just used an external drive to back up my Mac with Time Machine. I have Lion, but didn't click and check the "Encrypt Backup Disc". What should I do? Can I delete the external drive and start again, or can I encrypt later?

I've just used an external drive to back up my Mac with Time Machine. I have Lion, but didn't click and check the "Encrypt Backup Disc". What should I do? Can I delete the external drive and start again, or can I encrypt later?

I guess if stolen or lost it would protect my "stuff", and if I'm travelling would protect my privacy.
You must understand the purpose and implications of encryption before deciding whether to use it.
Encryption locks your data with a password. If you forget that password, the data is lost beyond any chance of recovery. Neither Apple nor anyone else will be able to help you recover that data if you don't know the password.
By the same token, the password must be strong enough to provide the security you want. For example, if you're the potential target of industrial espionage by a government or large corporation, you need the strongest possible password. To create and manage such a password safely is a task in itself, not to be undertaken lightly.
If you're only concerned about casual snooping by someone with no special skill, a weak, easily-remembered password is appropriate.
But regardless of the strength of the password, if you lose it, the data is gone forever.
Another point to remember is that if you encrypt your data on one storage device, you must also encrypt it on all other storage devices that would be accessible to the same attacker. Otherwise the data isn't protected. For example, if you keep your computer and your backup drive in the same room, and the internal drive of the computer is not encrypted, then there's no point in encrypting the backup drive.

I believe you've posted this multiple times. Once is all that's needed. Also, please don't use all caps. Aside from the fact it means you're shouting it's also harder to read than mixed case.
The error means a bad fan motor or the HDD has failed. In your case it's the latter.  You can try the following:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.

  • I have an ipad 2 that is backing up to one mac right now, but I want it to start backing up to a different computer. Is that possible? If so, how?

Thanks Carolyn, but I was backing up using iCloud to a friends laptop since my computer couldn't get iTunes 10.5. I realized all my stuff syncs onto his. Oops! I bought the new Apple iMac, and it's in the mail. When it comes I want to start backing up docs, music, photos, etc. Is it possible to switch computers?

OS is important.. What OS is on Mac and what is on the working macbook?
Was the Airport setup from the Macbook? That might be why it works from there..
Does the AE show up in Mac airport utility?
Can you mount the disk in finder and copy files to it/from it??
Did you try a TM reset after mounting in Finder.. so you know it is available?
What about a network reboot.. does it work post a restart for a few minutes/hours/days???

  • Help w back to my mac on uverse

    Help appreciated!
I'm unable to login to my work computer remotely from home and likewise can't get through to my home network from work.
    imac at work
    MBP at home
I recently switched to verse. previously with comcast I was able to use back to my mac...
My home network is as follows: 1. uverse 3801 router with wireless function turned off.
    2. uverse router is then connected via ethernet to airport extreme (tower model) in bridge mode. The AEBS manages my wireless network, together with two other airport base stations (older AE and time capsule) that are connected to the tower AEBS via ethernet. All Airports are broadcasting the same wireless network name to facilitate better coverage around the house. (I think these are set to bridge mode too)
I tried setting the uverse router to DMZ plus mode and setting the AEBS tower to DHCP and NAT, but that wreaked havoc on my wireless setup. Although speed tests through speakeasy and the comcast servers were giving 20mbps, I could not stream video at all. Netflix, HBO even youtube stalled, loaded, couldn't connect to stream.
Help finding a clear/updated walkthrough for Yosemite or a solution/fix appreciated.
At the end of the day, would like to have back to my mac working with uverse. Thanks

This is a Wild Guess:  Did uverse give you an Routing or Non-routing IP address?
    Non-Routing IP addresses are
    10.*.*.*
    192.168.*.*
    172.16.*.* through 172.31.*.*
If uverse gave a Non-routing address then they have put you behind a NAT router of their own to expand the number of homes they can support on a limited number of IP addresses.
NOTE:  I know your Airport Extreme will give out 10.0.1.* addresses when it is NOT in bridge mode, and most other routers will use 192.168.*.* addresses, but these are for the devices attached in your home.  The router itself should get a Routing IP address so it can talk directly to the internet, and other devices on the internet.
However, with IPv4 addresses running out, it may be possible that some ISPs have started to put their customers behind their own NAT routers to extend the number of customers they can support when they cannot get more IP addresses.
    Again, just making a guess.

  • I have been using time machine to back up my Mac Book Pro 3.1 to my Time Capsule. Now the Time machine hangs up on "calculating time remaining".

I have been using time machine to back up my Mac Book Pro 3.1 to my Time Capsule. Now the Time machine hangs up on "calculating time remaining".
Mac Book Pro - 3.1-15-inch  2.4/2.2GHz), Processor 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Operating system : OS X 10.10.1
Time Machine Version 1.3, Copyright 2007-2014 Apple Inc., Modified Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 6:03 PM
    Time Capsule: 500 GB C 2007
This Time Machine software worked satisfactory until Monday Nov, 10 2014 and I have backups until that time. For several years, the software deleted the oldest back up to save the latest one. This is acceptable to me as I have off site storage that is updated every 3 months. How do I get Time machine working again?

I have spent a couple of days trying to respond to Linc Davis. Finally I figured it out . The following is a copy of data from my console from the initiation of a time machine backup until it gets stuck trying to calculate the time remaining. There is no indication that anything starts saving.  I copied about 3 minutes of data. This is probably way too much data, but I do not know what is relevant.
    Thanks for the help,

  • Upgraded MobileMe to iCloud and now can't connect to my Time Capsule at home with Back to My Mac

I upgraded my MobileMe account to iCloud yesterday and now I can't connect to my Time Capsule when I am away from my home network.  I had been able to using Back to My Mac with my MobileMe account.  Now the airport utility still only shows a mobileme option in the advanced settings.  Is there an update for the time capsule so that I can input my iCloud information?

Apparently this isn't possible. This was never discussed publicly before the iCloud launch. All that was said was Back to my Mac would continue working. I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything, even after the iCloud launch. Made the switch, my AirPort started yelling at me because of MobileMe credentials. I've been waiting for an AirPort update but have still been digging. Just found this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4867
Talk about a footnote. This should have its own article, not be like, "Oh everything will still work great! ... ... ...
    Except for AirPort disk sharing."
I'm not too happy about this.
