Count radio buttons

Question

I have two jstl pages, the first one is normal html where i have 5 sets of radio buttons -
a.) <input type="radio" value="john" checked name="R1">
b.) <input type="radio" value="steve checked name="R1">
c.) <input type="radio" value="daniel" checked name="R1">
a.) <input type="radio" value="23" checked name="R2">
b.) <input type="radio" value="34" checked name="R2">
c.) <input type="radio" value="44" checked name="R2">
a.) <input type="radio" value="x2" checked name="R3">
b.) <input type="radio" value="y4" checked name="R3">
c.) <input type="radio" value="u8" checked name="R3">
What i need to do is count how many a's, b's and c's the user have selected - like 2 a's and one c, or 1 b and 2 c's.
how, using jsp or jstl or in a bean can i do this?

I suggest you to do this with javascript.
var el = document.getElementsByTagName('input');
var selected = new Array();
for (var i=0;i<el.length;i++) {
     if (el.type == 'radio' && el[i].checked == true) {
          selected[el[i].name] = selected[el[i].name] + 1;
There you'll have array with count of the selected radios mapped by the name of the group.
