Counter counts twice as many edges as it should, but correct frequency. Why?

Hi everyone,
I am using a PCI 6122 (S Series, DAQ-STC) and Labview 7.1 on a Windows XP.  There are only two counters on this card (Ctr 0 and Ctr 1) and I need to use both of them to count edges.  While testing the counters, I am inputing a TTL signal of 10kHz to the Gate of each counter, to be used as an external sample clock, and a 20Hz TTL signal into the Source of each counter, to be used as the input signal.  Ctr 0 counts 40 edges per second, i.e. twice as many as it should, while Ctr 1 is reading the correct number of edges, i.e. 20 edges per second.
The strange thing is that when I switch the connections of Gate and Source for both counters to measure the frequency (or period), both counters read the correct frequency, i.e. 20Hz.  To the best of my knowledge, both counters were reading the
correct number of edges a couple of weeks ago.  Also, I have reset the
device several times but it does not make a difference.  I am trying to figure out why this is happening and how to fix it, but I am no closer to answering either question.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.

After many tests on my own and after speaking with a NI engineer and repeating some tests over the phone, it seems like there is something wrong with the (one) counter on the board.  I have sent it back for repairs (thankfully, it was still under warranty .

Hi ColonelMustard, have you tried with fewer tabs? I believe the 'x's are visible in Firefox 29 when you have less than a certain number of tabs in that window (when you have more tabs the tabs shrink and the designers evidently thought the 'x's would take up too great a proportion of the space). This has not changed from previous versions of Firefox (for Macs or Windows PCs). Admittedly I don't have any Apple products, but these screenshots are evidence of the 'x's being visible on other tabs:
    * [http://www.blog-nouvelles-technologies.fr/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/firefox-29-beta-mozilla-redessine-son-navigateur-web-1.jpg]
    * [http://downloads.netmediaeurope.de/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/firefox-29-new.png]
I understand however that the results with fewer tabs may depend on other factors as well.
You can also close a tab (regardless of how many are in your window) without going on to it if you right-click it and select 'Close Tab'. You can also close the tab you are currently on with Command+W.
Other than that, I don't think there is anything you can do - sorry about that.

  • Setting output pin to high while counter counts edges - 660x

Traditional DAQ allowed you to set the output of a counter while it counted, is there an equivalent for daqmx?  The counter output for our current setup spins a motor until the counter reaches the proper number of counted edges from another pulse generator on the board. Perhaps I need to reconsider the setup, but there should be a method to do this action.  I was only able to find an indicator of the output state in the Channel property nodes. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hello Roth,
An event is thrown whenever a counter reaches its terminal count, and you should be able to use that to your advantage here.  Once that terminal count is reached, you can use DAQmx properties to set the counter to output a pulse or toggle the line.  If you use this property in conjunction with the initial count property, you can have the counter cound X number of edges and then toggle the output line:
    I hope this helps!

  • Why does my DAQ counter count more when a capacitor is used to eliminate noise

    Hi,
In my application i need to measure the speed of the motor using an encoder. The output of the encoder is a bit noisy (around 200 mV of noise.).Actually we are using a Siemens variable speed drive and it is the switching noise even after perfect shielding. Also the ouput of the encoder has a DC shift in waveform fr 383mV.When i connect to the counter channel (source :to count the pulses or gate :to measure frequency) the readings are high than actual. Then we conected a 0.1 microfarad capacitor across the counter channel and the DIO Ground. Then checked the waveform using a 60 mHz tecktronic oscilloscope. The waveform was without noise but the shape was a bit distorted, meaning there was no sharp rising edges and has a slow rise. But still there was a dc level shift for 383 mv.When i measured using counter the count was abnormal.Actual reading should show 1000 pulses /second, but with a capacitor it was counting 4789,5000, 356 etc.
Please let me know where the problem is. IS there any specific input signal rise time/fall time etc that the counter requires. Also will the dc level shift of 383 mV affect the counting.
I am using DAQ mx example vi(namely low frequency count as my freq range is 0 to 4000 hz)and also tried with simple digital count. Also please tell me if there is any problem in the connections
    Thanks,
    Sudha

While putting the capacitor between your signal and ground will git rid of any transients, it will also "round" out your signal. Your square wave provided by the encoder can be approximated by the sum:
    y(t) = a_0 + sum(k=0...infinity, a_k*cos(k*f*t)) + sum(k=0...infinity, b_k*sin(k*f*t))
The capacitor has a frequency-depenent resitant (called reactance) which decreases with increasing frequency.
    The reactance is:
    X(f) = 1 / 2*PI*f*C
Where f is your frequency and C=1uF. What happens is the capacitor shorts the higher frequency harmonics to ground and makes your square waveform "ring" at the edges.
If this ringing causes you to swing high-and-low close enough to the switching point, then you could count pulses that really aren't there. What you really need is some sort of hysteresis to prevent this false switching. You should put this after the bypass capacitor and before the counter.
Also, another question is: What are the output levels of your encoder? The 383mV DC offset shouldn't affect a counter, but if your logic "high" voltage doesn't exceed about 2V then you might be hitting a region of metastability: where the counter randomly switches high/low.

  • How to make the counter count or start at different time

    Hi,
How to let the counter count the time, that doesn't start at the same time ?
This timing system is a sport timing system for canoe competition, it need to track 6 competitor that start at different time .
I have a problem , I have 6 counter in a VI that use to track 6 competitor, but it start count at the same time, how to make it count separately for each competitor ?
Do you guys know how to solve this problem ?

    HI,
ya, i run it. I mean i know how to make it to 6 competitor already , and yes, it works but the time, it still count or start at the same time. I  need to run each competitor at different time , like this competitor A 20-2-2012.VI . This is the one i do but it cant put a stop button. once i put a stop button, the clock stop counting but the whole VI is running.

my imac (intel core i5, OS 10.10.1) shuts down every night and will not "wake up" next morning -- it never used to do that -- if I hold down the start button more than twice for many seconds, then it will finally boot up and works fine all day – I’ve tried shutting it down and unplugging it, and that does not work -- I’ve run disk utilities checked permissions, and run anti-virus and get no adverse results – I cannot figure out what is different that causes this problem

From previous experience 3 indicates a shutdown initiated by the SMC (System Management Controller) — hardware responsible for many low-level functions including power, sleep, lights, and fan activity.
    Try resetting it:
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Having count- count(count(1))

I have two queries below- first of which outputs one record, the Second query doesn't.
Can you explain why First query returns always records, at least one record? In explanation, can you say which process is runned after which (something like where is runned firstly, then group by, then...)?
    --First:
    select count(count(1)) from dual
    where 1=2
    group by dummy
    having count(dummy) > 0;--1 row, value: 0
    --Second:
    select count(1) from dual
    where 1=2
    group by dummy
    having count(dummy) > 0;--0 rows

    Hi,
Aggregate queries with nested aggregate functions (such as "COUNT (COUNT (1))") always return exactly 1 row, even if there are no rows in the table (or, as in your first example, no rows survive the WHERE clause).
The outer layer of nested aggreate functions is evaluated after the GROUP BY and HAVING clauses have been applied.
If you have a GROUP BY clause, but no nested aggregate fucntions, then the output contains one row for every distinct group, subject to the WHERE- and HAVING clauses. In your second example, no rows are left after the WHERE clause, so there will be no rows in the output.
You can think of things as happening in this order
    (1) WHERE
    (2) GROUP BY
    (3) (inner) aggregate fucntions
    (4) HAVING
    (5) Nested aggregate functions
The optimizer may not actually follow the steps above, but you won't notice that.

  • Count&Count Distinct

    Hi Gurus,
In one of OBIEE blogs I studied "Aggregation should only be performed on measure columns, with the possible exception of the aggregation COUNT and Count Distinct"....my Question is what happens if we apply count&count distinct aggregation rules to measures because we are using that in our project, what are problems we will face?

    User wrote:
you mean it executes a sub query internally to count and later it sum the result..correct.- You can ship the total calculations to the underlying RDBMS if 'Report Based Total' is not ticked, otherwise if it is, the BI Server computes the subtotal.
and in your answers "No" mean results coming by putting sum in criteria are different ..right- Yes thats what I mean, sorry if unclear - Are your totals correct now? Failing that try 'server complex aggregate' but this is usually only requried if your deriving calculations in Answers (ie % of total etc).

  • Why does the Math Channel save twice as many datapoints than my actual data channels when I export it?

I have data on channels 1 and 2 and also have the math channel (A + B) selected.
When I export data, it saves twice as many data points for the math channel than the others. Why is this?
Note, I am using Sample, not Peak Detect.
If anybody could answer this I would be very grateful.

Which version of the application are you using -- 1.0, 1.1, or 1.2?
In versions 1.0 and 1.1, the math channel did linear interpolation between samples to help support cursors and measurements. In 1.2, we improved the cursors and were able to remove the linear interpolation.
Regardless of your application version, the timestamp associated with each sample will indicate when the sample was taken.

  • Count(1),count(*),count(rowid)

i found from oracle book that
    count(1)--fast
    count(*)--slow
    count(rowid)--fast
but in this forum lot is said about the count function.and i.e count(1)=count(*)=count(rowid)
then why even in the book fast & slow is mentioned.
so does oracle internally converts count(*) to count(1) or really fast and slow comes into picture
    thanks

If you read the various threads on this forum as well as on AskTom, you will see that Oracle internally converts count(<some constant>) to count(*) as part of the query rewrite, so they are essentially identical.
When you start counting on rowid or particular columns then things can differ a little, but essentially ... not much.

COUNT (*) retruns the number of rows, regardless of what (if anything) is in them.
If you use any literal, such as the number 1 or the string '!' instead of *, it does the same thing. Remember, string literals are enclosed in singl;e-quotes, so
COUNT ('!') -- Inside quotesreturns the total number of rows, but
COUNT (!) -- No quotesis an error.
select count(col name) from table; If col is a column in the table, then
COUNT (col)returns the number of rows where col is not NULL.
If you want to count two different columns, such as col and name, you either have to do two separate COUNTs:
    SELECT  COUNT (col)  AS col_cnt
    ,     COUNT (name) AS name_cnt
    FROM     table_x
;or combine them into one expression:
SELECT  COUNT ( NVL ( col
                        , name
               )          AS col_or_name_cnt
    FROM     table_x
;depending on what you neeed to do.

If nothing else, this huge list of updates and fixes, shows clearly that the Logic Dev team is working hard on fixing and improving LPX to a major degree.... and from the list of fixes done.. show they do read the bug reports submitted!
    As an aside....
I recall how all the 'naysayers' prior to LPX (and in some cases, since...)  were proclaiming how Logic was dead, the team was being disbanded, we won't see any further development, the Dev team doesn't listen or care... and so on....... I wonder where those people are now?
