Counter intuitive way to bring out dark areas

Original we want to fix
Shadows at 95 (looking a little flat)
Starting over, exposure set to 1.7, highlights at -100 (nicer constrast)
Animated

And something a little more in-between if you care to try: Original (modified) + the other 2 in zip.
Note: You must import these in Lightroom to see changes to original, since mods are only in XMP.

  • Is there a way to bring out the white in the background?

    I'm using Final Cut Pro version 5.1.4
    I'm shooting a spec spot, with the same lighting set up as the popular Mac Vs PS spots...
    Two actors against a white wall. The white wall we shot against has some color variations on it, due to lighting temperatures... Is there a way to key just the white area behind the actors and bring up the white in the background without over brighting the actors?
    thanks!!

    Find the luma key and try that. Or chroma key set to white.

  • My MacBook freezes occasionally...is there a way to bring it out of frozen?  What would be causing it to freeze?

    My MacBook freezes @ least once a week.  I have to shut it down.  What might be causing it to freeze & is there another way to bring it out of frozen other than shutting it down?

    Not enough free space on the disk can cause the system to freeze...
    Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space
    Check the startup disk in case it needs repairing >  Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
    MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.5)  <  your profile
    If that is correct, when you can, you need to update to v10.6.8
    Updates are available from your Apple menu > Software Update...
    Not enough RAM can cause the operating system to freeze also. You may want to consider increasing memory. To see how much memory you have installed click your Apple menu icon then click About This Mac. That will prompt the System Profiler. See Memory under Hardware on the left.

    I don't think there any such option available OOTB, however you can use PowerShell to get such information e.g.
    $web = Get-SPWeb http://localhost
    $f = $web.Lists["Contact"].Fields["Customer"]
    $f.ListsFieldUsedIn()
    $web.Dispose()
    Check this link: http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/45574/is-a-list-being-used-as-a-lookup-for-some-web-part-in-the-site-collection

  • Is there a way to find out where iMessages are being sent from? I've received messages from an unknown email that are offensive and considered to be harassment.

    Is there a way to find out where iMessages are coming from? I've contacted security personnel at my school and I'm brig harassed. I just want it to stop.

    '''Here is an update to my former response.'''
    Here is a safe way to look at an email which you think is suspicious:
    * right click on the message and select 'Save As'
    * the file name will be the email subject followed by an extension of .eml
    * store it in a folder you can find easily, such as your Documents
    * using your file explorer, right click on the file name and open it with Notepad or a similar text editor (NOT Thunderbird!)
    * even though the format is not easy to read, you should be able to see who sent it to you, and also read the message text.
    Since you are looking at the message in a text editor, there is no chance a link can activate something bad. I have used this method many times, and have found several spoofs of email names of my friends.

    Why do you use the Blend Modes Lighter and Darker at all in this case and not simply Normal?
    And what kept you from posting a screenshot?
    I borrowed the image below for an HDR workshop I ran at the 2010 PSNZ National Convention, to demonstrate a method of removing halos.  You'll remember that halos were a serious problem with early HDR, and while the halos in this image were caused by over sharpening, they are perfect for demonstrating this technique.
    It relies on the fact that halos so often tend to put a lighter tone between the two areas where sharpening is being applied. Whether that is the sky abutting a dark line of hills, or the rock and little tower as in this image.  I've uploaded it at the size it was supplied to me at (about 2700 pixels wide).  So
    Click to open the full image, right click and copy, and paste into Photoshop.
    Select the clone tool, and set its blend mode to Darken.
    Try to sample on a line horizontal to where you want to clone, to give the best tonal match, and start cloning.
    Because the sky is darker than the halo, it overwrites it. But the rock is darker than the sky, so it has no affect.
    It works even better if you clone on a new layer also set to Darken.  No masking, just Photoshop blend mode magic.
    You can also fix the little tower. Use a great big brush — just remember to sample horizontal to match the horizon.
    Back then I was using the same trick with CAs after forgetting to fix them in ACR, and having done too much work to start again after spotting the problem.

  • Is there a way to find out which transactions are called by first transacti

    I'm trying to find out if there is a way to find out for ex:
    You go to PFCG and put in transaction CO15
    What other transactions is CO15 going to need or call.
    Thanks
    Joe

    In your test or QA environment, use ST01 to start a trace for authorization checks.  Execute CO15 as you normally would using options on the screen to enter the production order confirmation.  Once complete, stop the trace and review the log.  the log will include all authority checks that occurred.
    Another response was to use the USOBT table.  You can call these tables directly using SU24.  the check maintain entries are validate when an authority check is executed.

  • When are they going to bring out an update that makes ipod work properly?

    Every version of iTunes I've had has caused my PC to crash. It still isn't able to convert more than 4 WMA files to Mp3 without crashing, today it decided that I can't drag and drop whole folders, I have to do individual songs, and that's after reinstalling an old version of iTunes because the latest updates for iPod and iTunes made my PC crash over and over (around 10 times before I could actually use it and uninstall the update). If I'm listening to iTunes and I open a webpage with quicktime, *Blue screen* + multiple reboots. When will Apple stop messing about and bring out an update that makes iPod/iTunes actually work?

  • 3d bar ...counter-intuitive

    The Format chart dialog > Pivot tab screen is slightly counter-intuitive:
    - The order of the options Y-Axis, Z-Axis (optional) and X-Axis is usually meant to be sorted alphabetically at least by my usual way of creating charts (by my usual standards at least)
    - The default chart displayed is small and at first impression, 3d graphs are not immediately intuitive (such as dashboards for example)
    - No options for creating a graph legend within the Format chart dialog
    - I'm not sure why X-Axis is given as optional
    - Using 3DBar. When removing a dimension from the Z-Axis after having enabled it and unchecking General tab > Show Z Axis label, the legend for the Z-Axis is still displayed.  This happens even after a manual Refresh.
    Wouldn't it be great if the features available within the various panels (i.e. Java, HTML were standardized so that the user does not have to go through a training process for each screen?

    Jon:
    you wrote "Wouldn't it be great if the features available within the various panels (i.e. Java, HTML were standardized so that the user does not have to go through a training process for each screen?", which touches upon a sensitive subject -- user training.  In the particular deployment that I'm involved in, we've developed our own user training.  As my project lead says in our training class "we're trying to distill three days of a BusObjects WebI report writing class down to 4 hours...", which we somehow manage to do by "choosing one".  A thing that we do explain to our users is that they may someday discover another way to do something (like use a right-click versus the menu we point out, etc, etc) which is fine, but for today we're feeding from the fire hose, so too much information in one day is simply too much.  We also provide our users with a handbook that has screenshots from reports they're most likely to encounter when using our deployment, so we build up a comfortable look and feel for what they'll be doing once they get back to their cubicle.  So, we take users aside to a learning lab, we don't let them use the system on their own until they've been trained (preferably face-to-face, but we do have certain cases where we'll do some training "over the phone" in a structured manner), and we provide a take-away training guide.
    Just some thoughts for you as you move forward and try to provide your users with info.

  • Applying changes to stacks, counter intuitive?

    Help says:
    Here are a few tips for working with stacks:
    Any develop adjustments, ratings, flags, or color labels applied to a collapsed stack affect only the top photo.
    If you select a photo in a stack and add it to a Quick Collection or collection, only the selected photo is added, not the entire stack.
    Both of the resulting actions seem counter intuitive. Assuming that stacks are clearly identified, I want all of the flags, ratings, tags, and adjustments to act on the entire group. Grrrr.

    For me when I group a stack of photos primarily when they are sufficiently the same in a way that I don't need retain a view of them. Either multiple shots of the same subject, or from the same event. So more often than not I will want to apply changes to all as a set. I can't think of a reason I would want to change only the top photo. If I want to work with an individual photo, I will go out of my way to do that, but isn't LR supposed to help up when dealing with many many photos? LR is the rule, PS is for the exceptions, isn't that what we've been told?

  • Determine Light Area vs. Dark Area

    Here's another unusual one for you.  Is there a way to have Photoshop determine if the majority of a selected area is lighter color or darker.
    As an example, some photos have a fairly consistent brightness/darkness across the image, meaning there aren't any areas that are exceptionally dark or bright.  In other cases, a photo might be average brightness over most of the photo with areas of extreme darkness (basically black) so the "average" brightness is brought down quite a bit by that extra dark area even though the majority of the image isn't necessarily that dark.
    Is there any way to split these up to get an estimate of just how much of a selected area is extremely dark, how much is mid-toned, and how much is extremely bright?  Thanks!
    dgolberg

    Messing around with the code some, I noticed the math is a little out of order; so I had to flip 100/255 to 255/100 to get the right read-out.  Also, the "index < (33*(255/100))" is actually the lighter parts rather than the darker parts.  To get the darker parts I did "index > (66*(255/100))".
    All testing completed, I end up with the code below to check the percentage of luminosity in the light, mid, and dark tone ranges of the image:
    #target photoshop
    var hist = app.activeDocument.histogram;
    var count = 0;
    var dark = 0;
    var midtone = 0;
    var light = 0;
    for( var index = 0; index < 256; index++ ) {
        count = count + hist[ index ];
        if( index < (33*(255/100)) ) light = light + hist[ index ];
        if( index > (66*(255/100)) ) dark = dark + hist[ index ];
        if( index > (33*(255/100)) && index < (66*(255/100)) ) midtone = midtone + hist[ index ];
    var total = light + dark + midtone;
    if (total = count) {
        var darkPer = (dark/total)*100;
        var midPer = (midtone/total)*100;
        var lightPer = (light/total)*100;
        var totalPer = darkPer + lightPer + midPer;
        alert("Dark: " +darkPer+"\rMidtone: "+midPer+"\rLight: "+lightPer+"\rTotal Percent: "+totalPer);
        alert("Pixels in selection: " + count + "\rPixels below 33 lum: " + dark + "\rPixels between 33 & 66 lum: " + midtone + "\rPixels above 66 lum: " + light +"\rPercent below 33 lum: " + ( dark/ count ) * 100);
    else {
        alert("Some pixels are unaccounted for!");
    Figured I'd post my findings in case anyone else should need to do something similar.  But now I should be able to extract what I need from the results and make my adjustments accordingly (I just hope my theory works out, otherwise there will likely be another thread for another method in the near future, lol).  Thanks again for the help guys!
