Cover flow breaks up

I use iTunes 9 on Windows xp. Full screen cover flow works fine. But when the cover flow is a fraction of the screen area, the image breaks up. There are rectangles showing other parts of the flow or my desktop.
Any suggestions?

Dear Scott,
Funny, I had the same problem. I was rather disappointed to search through the Apple Discussions and find hundreds of pages of people with similar questions, frustrated and needing answers, and Apple largely ignoring their problems. It's much like a company giving out free toys that make children sick, and then denying any responsibility.
Anyways, on a hunch I though that video playback problems might be related to our problem. Using an answer from that discussion, I tried adjusting QuickTime settings. I always get uncomfortable doing this kind of thing. Why was it set that way if I should now turn it off? What the **** does it do, anyways? But none of this helped.
Then I downloaded and installed the latest version of DirectX. To me, this is like a mechanic telling me I need the latest carburettor with reverse matrix technology. OK, buddy, I'm at your mercy. I'll have to take your work for it. At least it's free.
This seems to have solved the problem, even with the QuickTime settings back to their original states. I have tried restarts, launching other programs that might interfere with the graphics. It seems robust. I'm happy.
Enjoy your full iTunes experience.
Love,
Scott

  • Songs from a single album STILL split up (multiple albums in cover flow)

I performed the steps listed in the FAQ to consolidate files of this sort (select all files in the Album, do a "Get Info", and make sure all Album/Album Artist/Artist entries are the same), but the multiple albums I see in cover flow are still there. Has anyone had this problem?

One other place it might cause them to break up are the disc _ of _ fields and the Track _ of _ fields.
If they are different from track to track, that might do it. Select all the tracks again, do a Get Info on the bunch. disc _ of _ fields should all be blank, but just in case one or more does have that filled in, but not all of them, go ahead and check the little check marks next to those two fields to reset them ALL to blanks.
Then for the Track _ of _ fields fields, if the second one is not filled in, that could be a problem. It should show the total number of tracks in the CD. So 10, 12, etc. whatever the total number is, if it is NOT there, then fill it in.
OK out of the album. Any better? If not, then next check the track numbers. Go to the first track, select, Get Info, and make sure it is set for Track 1 of X fields (where X is of course the total number of tracks. If it is OK use the NEXT button on the bottom of that window to advance to the next track and go through each one in turn making sure they are all set correctly (1, 2, 3, etc.).

  • Cover flow albums show songs from multiple albums

I love my iPod classic. the only issue I'm having is that when reviewing some albums via the coverflow feature, about 5 albums shows songs from multiple albums. they play correctly. It appears just the listing is messed up. I've tried deleting, adding the albums back to the library and resyncing, but it's still happening. Anybody seen this?

Try *One cover, too many tracks* below:
    *HowTo: Grouping Tracks Into Albums*
Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your iTunes library.
    *Use an album friendly view*
iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together or put the tracks in their normal order. The most useful order for editing the library is probably *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Artist until it reads Album by Artist.
    *One cover, too many tracks*
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover or append different numbers of spaces for each different album. Somewhat oddly, setting different values for Sort Album doesn't work.
*Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist*
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
    *One album, too many covers*
For true compilations, where each track is by a different artist, the answer is to set the compilation flag to true and enable the iTunes preference to *Group compilations when browsing*. If the album is not a compilation however, any tracks which list guest artists may be treated as separate items. Filling in the Album Artist field is enough to link things in iTunes. Sadly, however, the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums so this is only a partial solution. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate that this is information about the track as distinct from the song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
*One album, still too many covers*
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
*Tried that, there are STILL too many covers!*
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading articles (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
    *One cover for multi-disc album*
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track (so that no two tracks ever have the same number) until I reach disc 1. BTW You can still give the individual discs different artwork should it be relevant so that the correct artwork will be displayed as the album progresses.
    *One artist, many names*
With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field.

  • ITunes 9.2 Cover Flow Size Resetting

Since updating to 9.2, iTunes will not save the size of my cover flow window.
I reposition the cover flow section to about 40% of my screen.
When I exit iTunes and reopen, The cover flow art is back down to only like 10%.
Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks for all help

  • Cover Flow w/ Individual Tracks

I have a number of singles in my library with no album info listed. When I view in grid or cover flow, each individual track shows up with the generic iTunes icon as cover art.
Is there a way to either:
    a) consolidate all the singles for each artist so that they only show up once in grid or cover flow views, and/or
    b) select if you want certain tracks/albums to be hidden in grid or cover flow views?

Some albums may not be what would normally be called a compilation album (e.g. Now That's What I Call Music Vol X is a compilation album), but might have tracks with differing artists. The classic example is Queen's Greatest Hits III.
Microsoft of all people came up with a good idea on how to cope with this which is an additional meta tag called "Album Artist" which is different to the individual track artist. Using the same Queen's Great Hits III album example, the entire album would by any sensible person be considered to be a Queen album but track 2 (Under Pressure) of that album is jointly by Queen & David Bowie (not just Queen).
I (and I presume others) requested Apple add support for this Album Artist tag and it was indeed added in iTunes 7.0. Unfortunately in my opinion, Apple's implementation is not as good as Microsoft's.
Apple in iTunes do not let you browse by Album Artist at all, nor do they let you properly sort by Album Artist (in my opinion this sorting is broken).
I direct you to this other older message thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=843028&start=15&tstart=0 in which you can see a screen capture by myself listing just two albums - Queen's Greatest Hits II, and Queen's Greatest Hits III. Despite the fact that I have filled in all the tracks to all have the identical Album Artist entry (of Queen), you can see Coverflow incorrectly breaks it in to two copies of Queen's Greatest Hits II, and three copies of Greatest Hits III.
The only way I have found to get iTunes to correctly group all the tracks of an album together is to use any of the three sorting by Album name options (all accessed by clicking on the column heading called Album).
Note: Microsoft do let you browse and sort properly by the Album Artist tag in Windows Media Player.
[I suppose Microsoft have to get something right eventually!]

  • Refresh Cover Flow View

The Cover Flow, Artwork, List window doesn't refresh. As in; you maximize iTunes from the task bar and that part of the program where you're suppose to be seeing the Cover Flow, shows my desktop, or whatever program had the background before opening iTunes. If you go to List View, it gives you the list, then if you click back to Cover Flow view, which you'd think would refresh this window, it still shows the list view items. If you open a window and close it, the part of the window that overlapped the Cover Flow part remains. If you minimize or maximize it doesn't fix it, it doesn't refresh the window to display the correct view. If you click in this Cover Flow window section, it changes the podcasts/albums below so the Covers are there (the code still works for selection), you just can't see them. If you close the program totally, then start it, this window displays as it should. This appears to take some time to "break". If you leave it minimized for a while, or use it throughout the day, never close it but leave it on the task bar, then at some point, after 10 to 15 minutes it seems, it starts doing this.
I have Windows XP. Resolution 1440 X 900, Highest (32 bit) color, GeForce 6600 LE.

  • Capitalization errors in iTunes 7.2 Cover Flow view

iTunes 7.2 running under OS X 10.4.9 on MBP. Today I ripped a brand new cd to iTunes and two very strange things happened. One is that after ripping, I downloaded the cover art from iTunes and then decided to erase the downloaded artwork, but it still shows up in Cover Flow view. Nothing shows up for the individual files when I look at them individually with Get Info inside iTunes; there's no artwork shown to delete, yet it's still there in Cover Flow. I deleted the ripped music and emptied the Trash, reripped the cd, did NOT download the new album art, and it was still there in Cover Flow view! How could that possibly happen?
The other weird thing is that the workaround I used to fix capitalization errors in Cover Flow view no longer works. The cd I ripped is titled "Myths and Legends" but I changed it to "Myths And Legends". It shows up correctly on the individual tracks but "And" remains uncapitalized in Cover Flow view. The old workaround was to simply add any new character to the album name, e.g. "MMyths And Legend", apply that change, and then reedit to take out the extra "M". Stubbornly, this no longer works! After taking the extra "M" back out, the "And" remains uncapitalized in Cover Flow view. I think 7.2 introduced a bug that breaks this fix and leaves the original bug in tact. Can anyone verify this?

  • Please fix cover flow and quick look asap.!

Maverick upgrade put my cover flow and quick look unuseable.  shows wrong Icon for file. I ran disk utility several times to no avail.

Apple probably don't read this user forum, so submit feedback if you want to talk to them directly.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
This is a place to get help from other users, so if you can provide more info we may be able to work it out, otherwise you will be stuck waiting for it to work itself out or for Apple to change something.
This app will create a system report that could highlight what is happening on your system (it's possible for old software to break new code on Mavericks).
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck run it & paste the output here.
You should try Quicklook with several files of different types to work out what works & what doesn't. Look for patterns too, e.g. Do jpegs on the desktop work but not when they are inside you Pictures folder.
What exactly did you run in Disk Utility and did you do that when booted from the recovery partition?
Have you rebooted since installing Mavericks?
I would also recommend trying a 'safe boot' to see if Quicklook works in that reduced mode (not everything works in safe mode so don't be alarmed if an app won't open etc).

  • Can not properly view cover flow in full screen in external display

My mac is the new Mac book pro 15.4 inch screen and I connect my mac pro to external display e.g. Samsung LCD monitor 24 inches.
The bug is that I can not PROPERLY view full screen (in external display) for some application e.g. iTunes, and Front Row.
    - When I use iTunes, I can not properly view Cover Flow view in full screen (in the external display screen) except the case of mirror display.
    - For Front Row, I can not view full screen in external display but only my mac display.
However, for other DVD or VDO players, I can view movie on external display in full screen and I still be able to do other works on my mac screen.
Please let me know how to solve it.

  • Is there a way of making my iPod's "cover flow" sort in the same way the software can . Artist -- Album by Year . It only seems to do Artist -- by Alphabetical Album . I want it look like it does on the PC .

Is there a way to make the "cover flow" on the iPod match the sort style that I use on the software . I go with Artist -- Album by Release Year . But the ipod seems to only do Artist -- Alphabetical by Album , and then there are a handful of albums oddly out of place . Can it be done ?

    Ottonomy, here's what to do.
Connect your iPhone to your computer and open the iPhone's playlist in an iTunes window. Copy/Paste the entire playlist into a new(!) playlist in iTunes, not on your iPhone. Then resort the playlist. After you sort it, Copy/Paste it to a new(!) playlist on your iPhone. Now delete the old playlist on your iPhone and rename the new playlist the name you want it to be (probably the same name as the old playlist).
The downside to this method is that you have to do it every time you add a song to the playlist. Unfortunately, I don't think there's another way.

  • What's wrong with my iPod's Cover Flow??

I have an iPod Touch 3rd Gen, 32Gb, and recently updated to IOS 5.
Since then, the iPod's cover flow feature is extremely slow, doesn't flow smoothly, and crashes after a few (15-20) seconds.
Today I noted something else: some album covers appear pixelated and blurry, even though HD. Those covers looked just fine until now.
As a side note, I have in use 30 of the 32 Gb (that's a lot of music, I know). Could this be related? I never had those problems before IOS 5, though.
    What's wrong with my iPod?
    Thanks for your help!

so as I see it people with this problem have 3 options
    - Make all of your album art a maximum of 500X500 pixels
    - Wait for an IOS update that fixes the problem
    - Scrap ipods and buy another brand of music player
Using photoshop to do it with, it took me about an hour to resize, change, and resync all of my 1400 songs(86 albums)

  • Cover flow lion finder window

Horrible horrible horrible feature of Lion:
iPhoto is occupied iwth a large upload of images to flickr.
I want to review some more of the images I shot today in thumbnail to
open and start working on them in photoshop without waiting for iPhoto
to finish (this is reason #6099 why I do not let iPhoto control the
location of my photos on the drive, so I can access them without
    opening their specific iPhoto library).
I open the enclosing folder for the images, click to view by icon,
enlarge the icons, then click to sort the photos by date, and....COVER
FLOW!  they've Cover-Flow-ized the icon view when you do any kind of
    sort except by name.
I cannot say how much I hate cover flow--nausea-inducing for the
motion sickness prone, nasty vile scheme in general--and now, it's
dropped the images I can see in one glance at the screen in this icon
by date view of the finder window to ONE, and I can't turn it off.  I
do NOT have coverflow checked in view options.
Is there any way to kill coverflow completely in every place they've
    put it?
(Feedback already sent to apple, BTW, if you have this problem too, and there's no solution offered by one of the bright folks on this board, please send them some at apple.com/feedback--the place to put feedback for programs like finder that don't have a 'send feedback' menu item))

Support call gave the solution:  instead of 'Arrange by', use the 'clean up by' command under the view menu in Finder.  This does what arrange by used to, and while the menu options are more limited than 'arrange by', it doesn't default to the cover-flow behavior that is so irritating.
If you hate cover flow like I do, please send them feedback.  If enough of us complain about it, maybe they'll stop putting it all over the place.

  • Screen saver overrides iTunes cover flow in Lion

On my new iMac (OSX 10.7.1, iTunes 10.4.1), when in full screen cover flow mode, the screen saver overrides this, which is annoying as I like to leave it playing with the artwork displayed. This did not happen on my old (Leopard) Mac. I can't find any preference setting that seems to fix this. I dont really want to turn off the screen saver - I didn't have to before, why now?

Have you tried creating a hot corner (System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver - Hot Corners) to disable the screen saver by parking mouse pointer in the "hot corner."
I'm assuming Lion still has this function.

  • Cover Flow does not update in full-screen mode

Following an upgrade to iTunes 10.5 (141) and Lion (10.7.2) - I've noticed that Cover Flow no longer updates to the current song in full-screen mode. It will return to, and remain frozen at the first song of the playlist until manually updated or I revert to non-full-screen mode.

I assume you are using a desktop shortcut to start Lightroom.  Look at the properties for that shortcut.  There should be an option to set it to "maximize".
