Cover Flow bug? Albums out of alphabetical artist order

Can somebody tell me why certain albums are placed all the way at the end, when viewing Cover Flow on my iPhone?
For example, Jay-Z's Black Album shows up as the very last album... instead of next to other Jay-Z albums I have.
This doesn't happen in iTunes Cover Flow - only when using Cover Flow on my iPhone.
There is nothing wrong with my tags or artist input, or anything - the Black Album is still listed under Jay-Z albums when you touch his name... It's just that when viewing it in Cover Flow, it's out of order. As if instead of Jay-Z, the artist was like 999 (past 3 Doors Down, 3OH!3, etc). The VERY last album.
This has happened to other albums too.
Anybody????

OMG I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT! It took me hours to figure out how to fix it and it'll take me another couple of hours to make sure the way it sorts it stays consistent, BUT I FINALLY GOT IT! It was secretly sorting it under Sort Album, which was hidden to me and so it sorted it under the origional album name and not what I'd tried to make it. I don't get what the difference is between Sort Album and asking it to sort my albums in alphabetical order, but OH WELL. This has been plauging my iPod for years and I finally figured it out! A million thanks!

  • Cover flow and album sort issues

I just got a 80GB iPod classic for Christmas and I have noticed some annoying differences between iTunes cover flow and iPod cover flow:
    1. In iTunes cover flow, when you have songs with "Unknown Album", they clutter up the cover flow for each artist. In iPod cover flow, they are sent to the back of the cover flow in a nice little "Various Artists" cover. I like how this works on the iPod better.
    2. iTunes cover flow sorts by album artist, so you don't see a separate album for each non-album artist song.
For example: If I set my album artist for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" (don't ask why, this is how i like it sorted) then I will only see one "Saturday Night Fever" rather than one for Bee Gees, one for Kool & the Gang, etc.
iPod cover flow sorts by artist, so you see a separate album for each non-album artist song. I like the way this works in iTunes better.
    3. When sorting by "Album by Year" in iTunes, syncing the iPod doesn't seem to follow the same sorting. Albums are still sorted on the iPod alphabetically. I want them to sort by year on my iPod.
So I would appreciate it if someone could help me with all 3 of these issues. As you can see, sometimes iTunes is better for me, sometimes iPod is better for me.

    3. Playlists should be sorted in the same way as they are in iTunes. The Cover Flow order is fixed.
This is not the case, at least not with iTunes 7.5.0.20 and my 80GB Classic running 1.0.3 on it (current version as of this writing). In iTunes, under LIBRARY, I select Music, and I have my music sorted via *Album by Year*. This works perfectly in iTunes. I'll use my Soundgarden library as an example, as it shows the problem nicely.
    *_iTunes order_:*
    Ultramega OK
    Louder Than Love
    Screaming Life/Fopp
    Badmotorfinger
    Superunknown
    Songs From The Superunknown
    Down on the Upside
    A-Sides
That's ordered by date and is perfect. +Ultramega OK+ was released way back in 1988, while A-Sides was released nearly 10 years later in 1997. In Cover Flow View it works great. However, in the iPod it's sorted alphabetically, which is completely wrong:
    *_iPod Classic_:*
    A-Sides
    Badmotorfinger
    Down on the Upside
    Louder Than Love
    Screaming Life/Fopp
    Songs From The Superunknown
    Superunknown
    Ultramega OK
This is totally wrong. And I haven't yet found a way to force it.
Apple, please, this shouldn't be that difficult.

  • Cover Flow Blurred Album Art - Bug?

Cover Flow is losing focus on whatever the displayed album art is after a few seconds of scrolling (image becomes burry). Once this happens it stays that way and affects all album art until Cover Flow is exited. Happens at random, doesn't seem to be caused by any particular piece of album art. Can most often (but not always) be reset by going out of Cover Flow mode either by going to a non-landscape mode or exiting Cover Flow altogether, but it is extremely annoying to be continually dropping in and out of Cover Flow to try to read the album art. It didn't do this when I had only a few album covers, but once I started loading it up with a bunch of stuff I started having problems. Could this be something like a single defective album art image file causing Cover Flow to go wacko, or is it simply a general bug? Any fixes or anyone else having this problem?

Yep, The blurry coverflow happens to me ONLY if I haul * across the albums then it catches up to me in about 2 seconds.....
I guess this time is needed to render the artwork?
I have never had to exit for it to work properly. I also noticed something like this happening when flipping quickly through pictures.

  • [COVER FLOW BUG] Double albums in some circumstances

I have found a bug affecting the Cover Flow feature.
I have 2 Albums called "Greatest Hits" on my iPod
Queen - Greatest Hits, and Venga Boys - Greatest Hits.
If I open these albums using Cover Flow, a list of songs from both albums appear, instead of just the selected album.
    Repro Steps:
    1. Open Queen - Greatest Hits within Cover Flow
    2. It will show all songs from Queen - Greatest Hits, as well as Venga Boys - Greatest Hits.
    3. It should only be showing the songs from Queen, not Venga Boys.
Anyone else able to reproduce this? When having two albums with the same name?

  • Cover Flow Bug

I've noticed a bug in cover flow when using the iPod feature of the iPhone. When you first load cover flow, each of the artwork images is crystal clear. Flowing through each one, the images are perfect. However, if I scroll fast from side to side, after about 3 times, when I stop on each album, it's a bit blurry. I wait for it to become unblurry, but it stays that way. If I rotate my iPod to get out of cover flow, and back in, the covers again are just fine.
I am able to reproduce this bug every time. I don't know if anyone else has had this issue. I just bought my iPhone from the Apple store and I have the latest updates.
I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE my phone! This is the best thing since my first iPod, my first Mac, my first..... yes, this is just great!!!!

When I am listening to a song and I go to cover flow it matches the song that's playing.
Yeah, but do this: put the iPod touch sideways in the little stand, so it's showing cover flow. If you never pick up or move the iPod, the cover that's displayed will never change. The only way to get it to refresh is to turn it vertical long enough for the currently playing song to show up, then back to sideways. I did some research and it seems that the iPhone does that, too, so I figured it was either deliberate on Apple's part, or just something they haven't implemented yet.
Here's what's kind of odd about it, though: cover flow knows when the song changes, because if you watch it closely, the text below the cover changes when the currently cover is not for the currently playing song. I don't have my iPod handy, but it's something like when the cover is current, it's the artist name and the name of the song that's playing. But when it switches to a new song, the song name is replaced by the album name. Something like that, anyway.
In any case, I've also sent feedback to have cover flow follow the currently playing track.

  • Cover Flow Bugs

I have a couple of issues with cover flow. One is that one disk album has two covers. The other is that there is no order to cover flow. Is there any way to fix these annoying bugs in what looks like it other wise might be a useful feature?

There is a 100% way to fix this bug that's pretty simple, although it can be time consuming if you have a large library like I do.
iTunes pretty much looks at common characteristics like CD title and artist to determine what album covers to display. Now, if the software sees the same album title, but 5 different variations with the artist, it'll most likely tag your library to display the same album cover 5 times.
To get around this, select all of the tracks to an album that is displaying multiple covers by clicking on the top most track, then holding the shift key, clicking on the bottom most track. After that, right click on any of the highlighted tracks and select the "get info" option (for you single-button mouse users out there, I believe you hold the command button and click . Make sure the info tab is selected.
You will see a bunch of fields you can use to tag your music, but the one you want to key in on is the Album Artist field. By identifying one album artist, your telling the software that "this is all on album, don't get hung up on the variations". After you enter the album artist info and click "ok", it'll process the tracks that were selected and consolidate them all under one album cover!
This is the perfect solution for albums that feature a lot of different artists/guest stars, like OutKast's "Idlewild" CD, for example.

  • Cover flow and Album Art Peculiarities

Ordinarily when I import an album into iTunes, all the songs on the CD are consolidated under a single album cover reducing the number of instances of art in Cover flow. As iTunes plays down through the list of songs, the same album cover is displayed in Cover flow. I can also see the next album in the que on either side of the album currently playing.
Lately though, I'm seeing an instance of album art for each song on an album. For example, if there are twelve songs on the album, there will be twelve instances of the album art work in Cover flow.
I have looked carefully at the song/album information to ensure it is consistent for each song on the album and it all appears to be same so I've just about given up.
I like to scan in my own CD covers to get the highest resolution artwork possible (generally 175k in size) and because it can be very time consuming, I no longer ask iTunes to search for album art.
I select the entire list of songs in the album and perform a Get Info and drop the artwork onto the Art well and Cover flow will react in one of two ways; it either consolidates all songs under a single piece of art or it will display the art for each song on the album!
    What am I doing wrong?

For the instances where you are getting multiple album art showing in Cover Flow, are those songs from a compilation album? If the artist name isn't exactly the same for each song, iTunes will list them individually. You will have to: identify them as a compilation or alter the tag info or use the Sorting option to group them together.

  • Cover-flow and Album-art problems

On cover-flow, sometimes background album-art will jump ahead of the viewed (center) album. (iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.1) can I fix this?
Also, in the lock screen (same iPhone) the album-art will not be in the center of the screen, but down about half way through the unlock slide.

Same issue with my iPhone 4S... there's nothing you can really do apart from switch back to '6.0'. Hopefully this bug will be fixed in the next update, use cover flow a lot for music as i prefer it to the portrait look.

  • Ipod cover flow, some albums show up after the letter Z

Hi all, got a strange problem.
I have my ipod set to sort by artist in the cover flow.
However, some albums pop up after the letter Z.
There are over 1400 cd's on it, but a 30-something do this.
I tried adding "artist sorting"tag to the albums, but it still shows.
Trust by Elvis Costello for example shows up after the z, while there is no reason at all to do that according to the info.
Anyone who has any tips, escept deleting the albums and adding them again in the hope the problem disappears ?

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
The albums that appear after Z will be marked as compilations. See my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist for details.

  • HT5457 How do I recover my cover flow for albums?

If I reset my Iphone to its factory setting, will this restore my album cover flow?

MacBook Airs don't run Classic.  These two links should be helpful for it:
Apple Article to reset the password for 10.6.8 and earlier, and 10.7 and later.
Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to find the operating system.
If you are totally locked out of the operating system, usually when you Option boot you can find out what you are booting if the machine can boot.

  • Small Cover Flow bug

Hello everybody. I have a brand new iPod Touch 32 GB, I love it. But I have a small problem. When I'm browsing through my albums using cover flow, a few flicks in, it goes abruptly back to the "home" screen and stops whatever song I'm playing.
Everything else seems to work on the device, but Cover Flow has that litte bug. Well, I have a lot of titles (6633, and NO DEVIL :-)), it perhaps explains it, but I can't go througt all my albums cover arts without a bug. It always seems to work correctly bt suddently BOOM, it bugs.
I have already reinstalled the software (1.1.4), but it still bugs.
Does anyone know what to do ?

If you further use your Touch, you will discover that it is not only the cover flow that is triggering this behaviour. It can happen all the time, even with the screen disactivated and only playing music. It can happen while ony looking at pictures. It rather often happens when using safari.
Do a search on the forum here for "return to home screen" and learn how many people do have this problem. It is a serious bug.
Btw. everytime this happens, your playcounts get deleted too...

  • Cover Flow bug or feature?

With Finder Preferences set to "Always open folder in a new window" and Finder view set to Cover Flow, double-clicking a folder icon in the top (Cover Flow) portion of the Finder window opens its contents in a new window behind the existing window, whereas double-clicking the same folder in the lower (List) section of the Finder window opens its contents in a new window in front of the existing window

    Hi,
I installed Leopard yesterday and have exactly the same problem.I think its a bug but would be interested to know if a new install fixes it - its really annoying!

  • Cover Flow view is out-of-sync after deleting files

If you move a file to the trash while in Cover Flow, the file's contents are still displayed but the file is gone. Then as you use the arrow keys to move up and down, the file names continue to be out of sync with the content that's being displayed.
The only way to sync them back up again is to change views or flip to another folder and flip back.
If you continue to delete files based on the content you're looking at, you'll end up deleting the wrong files.

I tried watching them in the timeline and viewer, all out of sync. No external monitor. I did get a message once about dropped frames and something else, it said I might have these issues, but it didn't tell me to change settings, just told me it was gonna happen, lol. So, I don't know where to start to fix it.

  • Mouse scroll on cover flow skips albums

    Hello all,
as the title states, when I did a mouse scroll, it used to flow through every album. At one point it started skipping some album. I have this problem quite a while now but it starts to get annoying. I have Windows x64 with the latest version of iTunes x64 and Logitech mouse with latest drivers (even thought the mouse doesn't seem to be the problem because mouse-pad scrolling is acting the same). I have tried changing how many lines the mouse roll scrolls each time but when I put one line at a time it skips one album (for 3 lines I think it scrolls 4 by 4). I have hundreds of albums so I'm not sure if there is some kind of algorithm that when you have many albums it goes 2 by 2 so you can scroll them or something... Any help will be appreciated.
    Cheers Jimmy

If not a bug, it's certainly a design oversight rather than intentional behaviour. As far as I can tell it's present on all iPods, it's just more obvious on the classic, and to some extent it's also present in iTunes. If you select the browser view so that you get a listing albums on the top right you might expect that each line would represent a single album, but if you have more than one album with the same title you still only get one line. Workarounds are as Jeff suggested, e.g. *Album - Artist*, appending different numbers of spaces to the album title for each different album or giving each album different Sort Album values. Personally I prefer the first method as it clearly distinguishes albums in the iTunes browser.

  • Cover flow into album art and how to control iTunes from another app.

Hi all 2 areas of concen, one is coverflow/ album art and the other is itunes controller:
I have searched but cannot find the answer to this:
    1) I have some songs with album info already, and I used iTunes to get the album art for coverflow etc. ... some songs from the same album did not have the album category filled in, I go back and fill it in: now how do I get iTunes to recognize the album art so it shows up for the newly corrected songs?
    2) In coverflow, iTunes picked the wrong album cover, can I manually fix it/pick the right one?
    3) will coverflow only show album art for those albums recognized by iTunes, or will it use album art that I get from other sources and add manually? And what will show up in my ipod?
    and lastly
4), is there anyway to control iTunes without switching apps (if I am working in Word or safari and want to skip a song, etc)...is there an overlay controller?
    TIA
