Cover flow in different order from on iTunes

On iTunes the albums all are in order: alphabetical by album artist and, within album artist, alphabetical by album name. However, on my iPod there are a lot of albums that appear after the "various artists" compilations (which appropriately should come at the end). Any ideas about how to get these albums integrated into their correct position? It's almost as if there are two separate lists, one after the other. Thanks a lot!

iTunes and the iPod software have significantly different behaviours with respect to the treatment of Album Artists and Compilations. Careful selection of the various optional settings in each can get something close to agreement, but it is unlikely to be exactly your preferred scheme in both cases.
See my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist.

  • Cover Flow image different from

Most of the time, the album artwork in Cover Flow is identical to that on the thumbnail image in the bottom left corner of my screen (sorry - don't know the correct term for it). However, on occasional tracks they're different.
I think I know why, but don't know what to do about it...
I have a huge collection of old singles that I digitised. There being no album title, I created one called Singles and it keeps them all together. The thumbnail image always varies with the track but the Cover Flow image only displays the artwork of the first track by that particular artist (so for example, the Cover Flow artwork for all Elvis Presley singles is the same, and it's the first one in the list).
I'd be grateful for any ideas for how I can correct this?

Well, I'd have to set something up like that to check....but I don't have a bunch of singles hanging around.
The closest I have to it is Tori Amos' +Strange Little Girls+. Each track has a different picture on the actual CD, so I scanned those in.
Cover flow shows the artwork from track 1. The other tracks only show their specific artwork when they are selected, and only becaue I went to the artwork tab and dragged around the images so the one I wanted was first in thebox.

  • Cover flow albums show songs from multiple albums

I love my iPod classic. the only issue I'm having is that when reviewing some albums via the coverflow feature, about 5 albums shows songs from multiple albums. they play correctly. It appears just the listing is messed up. I've tried deleting, adding the albums back to the library and resyncing, but it's still happening. Anybody seen this?

Try *One cover, too many tracks* below:
    *HowTo: Grouping Tracks Into Albums*
Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your iTunes library.
    *Use an album friendly view*
iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together or put the tracks in their normal order. The most useful order for editing the library is probably *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Artist until it reads Album by Artist.
    *One cover, too many tracks*
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover or append different numbers of spaces for each different album. Somewhat oddly, setting different values for Sort Album doesn't work.
*Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist*
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
    *One album, too many covers*
For true compilations, where each track is by a different artist, the answer is to set the compilation flag to true and enable the iTunes preference to *Group compilations when browsing*. If the album is not a compilation however, any tracks which list guest artists may be treated as separate items. Filling in the Album Artist field is enough to link things in iTunes. Sadly, however, the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums so this is only a partial solution. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate that this is information about the track as distinct from the song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
*One album, still too many covers*
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
*Tried that, there are STILL too many covers!*
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading articles (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
    *One cover for multi-disc album*
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track (so that no two tracks ever have the same number) until I reach disc 1. BTW You can still give the individual discs different artwork should it be relevant so that the correct artwork will be displayed as the album progresses.
    *One artist, many names*
With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field.

  • Album View and Cover Flow View are not available in iTunes 7

    Hi,
When I connect my iPod, in the iTunes 7, the options for Album view and Cover Flow View are disabled for the song list on my iPod. I only have a list view for them. However, at the same time, the songs on the library can be viewed in any of the three (3) views.
What might be the possible reason and is there any options to view your iPod songs in Cover Flow View in iTunes (while it is connected)?
Please solve this query of mine.

It just simply not a feature. You might think about requesting it here:

  • Document Flow to Production Orders from BOM

    Dear SAP Gurus,
I have attached a few documents at header level of the BOM. I have also attached document at item level in the BOM. When I create a production order these documents are not flowing to Production Order. Is there any way to do that. I also want to see them in CS11 and CS12 reports.
In OPKP I have already checked Document Links-BOM "On Creation" and "On Release" for my production scheduling profile.
    Thanks and Regards
    Geravine

    Dear Geravine,
You can use a Production Scheduling profile to specify that in a production order or process order
particular business transactions are carried out in parallel
generation of document link from material master on order creation
generation of document link from BOM on order creation
generation of document link from material master on order release
generation of document link from BOM on order release
Include the check boxes for Document links for material and BOM both under order creation and order release.
    Check in T Code OPKP.
But in my understanding only the document that are attached to the header and the items with D category alone gets
    transferred to the production order.

  • Viewing artwork in cover flow view...

I seem to be one of the few users of iTunes that is truly delighted with the latest release, albeit starting afresh with 7.0.1 on a new installation of OSX. That said, I find that in the cover flow view artwork downloaded from the iTunes store displays more much more quickly than the scans of covers I have added manually. At first I thought that this might be because of the higher resolution images I was using, but when scrolling I find that my scans do not show until I release the mouse whereas iTunes images display fluently at all times. A small, but irritating cosmetic point, but perhaps there is a solution...?

Not yet. I experience the same thing. Your "manual" artwork is imbedded into the song file. The new Apple artwork is retained in a separate folder in the iTunes folder. There must be a lag accessing the former, hence the artwork not immediately appearing. Remains to be seen whether Apple addresses this.
I too like iTunes 7. Seems much more organized/functional.

  • Removing "Unknown Album" from Cover Flow

Is it possible to remove any albums that don't have names (but are named "Unknown Album" on the iPod) from Cover Flow, but still keep those songs on your iPod? The "Unknown Album" art clutters Cover Flow...I don't mind it in Now Playing but in Cover Flow, it's kind of an eyesore.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. After posting this, I realize that on the iPod, all the "Unknown Album" songs are put at the end of the cover flow in Various Artists - Unknown Album rather than cluttering up the cover flow. This will work for me. On iTunes, however, it still clutters up cover flow. I find it odd that iPod cover flow and iTunes cover flow act differently.

  • We want Cover Flow back in iTunes

After updating my iTunes I saw the new interface and I thought, ok, a new way to use iTunes. Some nice features, in the GUI. But than I got a shock:
    No coverflow anymore??
    No option to enable coverflow??
I don't have so much albums in my library, the most of them a "single" songs. So one Album contains one song. For me the album view is not so important as the song and playlist view.
And here its not possible anymore to go through the library like on a jukebox? Once Cover Flow was that "killer feature" of iTunes. And now its gone?
Grabbing in a list like in the older days? That's a step backward!
Apple, please bring back coverflow to iTunes in the next update!

    anilsudhakaran wrote:
Coverflow - the most overrated feature that only looks good in demos. Least functional and most resource intensive way of browsing your library.
I thought it was overrated too — until I downloaded iTunes 11. Now I sorely miss it when looking at playlists. Having that visual reference at the top of the screen was extremely helpful, and the new Artist List doesn't cut it because that view doesn't preserve the ORDER of your playlist.
I never used Cover Flow to NAVIGATE, but it absolutely ***** not having it as a visual reference for otherwise plain-text lists.
But don't worry — Apple will never bring it back. Everyone in this thread, don't worry your little heads. Apple knows best what you need, whether you agree or not. Don't question Apple. Only praise allowed.

  • How to get iTunes to show views other than list--no grid or cover flows

I posted earlier but no one offered any suggestions. I'll try very directly this time. With iTunes 8.1 installed, I can obtain no other view than LIST. I can't get GRID or COVER FLOW. Any suggestions from Mac gurus far smarter about these things than me?

Apparently, the only problem is in the view options. I don't routinely purchase music, I merely copy my own or friends' CDs into iTune. So, I can't verify there is any problem area there. But, the ability to view in anything other than list is driving me crazy. I grew accustomed to that cover flow view before this latest update, so I miss its availability. My concern is that this must be the indication of a deeper problem with iTunes or my video drivers or other related problems I've had over the last two months with the iPhoto, documented elsewhere in these discussion forums.

  • IPhone 6 shows a different free storage from what iTunes shows.

When I go into the storage section on my iPhone (iPhone 6 iOS 8.3), it shows a different number from what iTunes shows when I connect the device to it.
There's around a 500 MB gap that I cannot understand why is happening. This is kind of critical 'cause you know how many apps or pictures can fit in 500 MB and I don't know which number to follow.
Anybody else experiencing this? Any suggestions on how to fix?
    Thanks in advance.

this one is actually a really rare symptom of a flaky connection to the ipod on a Windows PC. there's more going on in terms of hardware on nanos and 5th gens than in the earlier models ... so if the connection is flaky to precisely the right/wrong degree, itunes will see the ipod, but misidentify it as an earlier version of ipod.
tracking down the cause of the flakiness can be tricky ... as you already know ...
just checking. have you tried connecting with a different (known-good) USB cable? does that seem to have any impact on the rate of occurence of the problem?

  • Invert Cover Flow and iTunes Content

    Hey everyone,
I was wondering if there was a way to put iTunes' cover flow display on the bottom of iTunes, and have the list of songs above it?
    Thanks,

    Any ideas???

  • Cover flow: the cover area turns black or white after a short time

    Hi
Does anyone know why my iTunes has begun turning the area, where the covers usually are placed, into complete black and sometimes complete white? When iTunes skips to the next track, it shows the covers again - for a short time - and then usually turns into black again. It also show me the cover flow, if I just go into iTunes again (you know, if I've been surfing on the internet, and then later go into iTunes again)
I have a rather huge library (~115 gb), but I have never had any issues like this before. iTunes is updated and so is my graphic driver. I'm using Vista 32bit.
    Best regards
    Jon

Well I updated to 8.2 and the same issue remained so went ahead and removed ALL Apple related components, Bonjour, Quicktime, iTunes etc. and redownloaded package and reinstalled... Everything works fine EXCEPT I still have the same issue with coverflow going black after a while (basically showing the black background only). Clicking into the area brings back the coverflow... it's like it's going into the background... Quite odd. Not really a big deal but none the less annoying!
This is the only app experiencing anything similar. Tested with 4 different NVidia video driver versions from 179.x onward and it is consistent so I doubt OpenGL as it was working fine before. I'm stumped! My guess is Apple coders need to force the Cover flow to stay in the foreground and or return to it. Oddly, this issue is easy for me to reproduce, When Windows shutsdown the screen and it comes back after a record switch almost always the coverflow will be gone.

  • Cover Flow & Music Video

In Cover Flow I can pick and play my music videos. For some reason one on my music videos is not displayed in Cover Flow and I can't figure out why. I can find all my music videos when I look in the iPod app under "Videos" and then "Music Videos". It just seems odd that one will not show up in Cover Flow. All of my music videos are set at Music Videos.
When I open iTunes on my computer and look at Cover Flow a different music video is missing, but by the same artist. The music videos by this artist are from different albums.

I finally was able to correct this issue by resetting the "Get Info" information for the music video. Had to do it a few times but iTunes finally got it right. Seems like iTunes can be picky for whatever reason.

  • Icons in Cover Flow

Hi, I'm new to Leopard so please excuse me if this question has already been posted.
Cover Flow in Finder displays ICONS. I'd like to use Cover Flow to display my DVD COVERS.
In iTunes this isn't a problem. I simply add Artwork in Get Info. But I don't want to put all my DVDs into iTunes because I have to convert them to a lower resolution format to do it. I want to keep my DVD files in high resolution and use Cover Flow in Finder as a library for my movie collection.
Unfortunately Cover Flow in Finder does not have an add Artwork option because it just displays the Quicktime or other movie format Icons.
I think the only way around this is to convert my DVD covers to Icons. But they come out very poor quality.
Is there another way of doing this?
If not, is there a good Icon creator out there that will enable me to convert my high res. .jpg DVD covers into equally high res. Icons?
It's odd Cover Flow in Finder doesn't seem to work the same way as Cover Flow in iTunes. Surely they're both built on the same platform. In fact, Cover Flow in Finder isn't really COVER Flow at all, since I can't add Artwork (covers) to it! It should be called ICON flow.
    Thanks.

    MartinJapan2007 wrote:
With no Get Info/Add Artwork option in Finder's Cover Flow (unlike iTunes) I cannot change these base icons to the cover art, which is what I7d like to do.
As you note in your follow up post, you can add custom icons (up to 512 X 512 pixels) via Finder's Get Info but this is apparently not what you want. iTunes doesn't actually change the icons either; as mentioned earlier, it associates the music files with separate artwork files that Cover Flow (a display technology that both iTunes & Finder use) displays in place of the file's actual icon.
Cover Flow also supports displaying some embedded artwork -- images in the file itself. Media file types like mp4 are "containers" in that they hold a variety of data types, including video tracks, audio tracks, metadata information (like author, copyrights, or recording date), or even still images. Each file type has some scheme for identifying the various data types it supports.
Neither Cover Flow nor Finder (nor, for the most part, iTunes) supports embedding data in these file types. For that, you need an editor that can parse the container's data scheme & add or modify data in the proper format. A simple example is QuickTime Pro, with which you can set the "poster frame" to any frame of "mov" files. (This is actually metadata that just identifies the frame, not a separate image.) Cover Flow will look for this & if present will display the poster frame instead of the icon.
MPEG file types use different but somewhat similar schemes. (ITunes partially supports the mp3 MPEG scheme, thus the comment above about it.) To embed images or metadata in MPEG files you will need an editor with that capability. Currently, all that I know of are based on AtomicParsley, (so named because the MPEG scheme uses "atoms" to identify data types).
The AtomicParsley link explains this much better than I can; it is worth a read to get some idea of how this works & the relationship between iTunes & embedded MPEG data. At the end of the page you will find links to apps that use it to edit MPEG metadata. I know of no "all in one" editor for all MPEG file types; each is purposed for different uses. vID Infiltr8 metadata video tagger probably comes closest to what you want, since it can set artwork in MPEG 4 files.
For the other file types you mention, I do not know of a good editor. I believe VLC is capable of embedding some data types, but not in a user-friendly way -- you pretty much have to do everything manually.
If you use appropriate editors, you should be able to accomplish what you want, but I believe you will soon see that this is much more complex than it appears at first glance & may sometimes require rewriting the entire media file or have other consequences you were not expecting.

  • Cover flow and Album Art Peculiarities

Ordinarily when I import an album into iTunes, all the songs on the CD are consolidated under a single album cover reducing the number of instances of art in Cover flow. As iTunes plays down through the list of songs, the same album cover is displayed in Cover flow. I can also see the next album in the que on either side of the album currently playing.
Lately though, I'm seeing an instance of album art for each song on an album. For example, if there are twelve songs on the album, there will be twelve instances of the album art work in Cover flow.
I have looked carefully at the song/album information to ensure it is consistent for each song on the album and it all appears to be same so I've just about given up.
I like to scan in my own CD covers to get the highest resolution artwork possible (generally 175k in size) and because it can be very time consuming, I no longer ask iTunes to search for album art.
I select the entire list of songs in the album and perform a Get Info and drop the artwork onto the Art well and Cover flow will react in one of two ways; it either consolidates all songs under a single piece of art or it will display the art for each song on the album!
    What am I doing wrong?
    G4 Dual Mirrored Door

For the instances where you are getting multiple album art showing in Cover Flow, are those songs from a compilation album? If the artist name isn't exactly the same for each song, iTunes will list them individually. You will have to: identify them as a compilation or alter the tag info or use the Sorting option to group them together.
