Cover flow order

for some reason some of the albums that I have end up at the end of my cover flow list. all of the album information is correct and everything it just for whatever reason ends up at the end of the list, is there anything to do, or is it just stuck like that from some weird ipod bug. Its not a major problem or anything i was just curious if there is some problem solver out there. thanks in advance

Long work around, but have you tried changing the "Sorting" options for your tracks in iTunes?
It's not ideal for an entire Library, but if you have a few specific albums or tracks in mind, it might help. An example would be if you had an artist such as 16volt, who you might want at the front of your library or maybe even in the "S"s. In iTunes, Get the Info for the track you wish to change, go to the Sorting Tab and just change the info there. In the 16volt example, if you want it up front, change the artist to maybe "aaa16volt", or spell it out "sixteenvolt" if you want it to show up in the "S"s in your library.

  • Cover flow and album sort issues

I just got a 80GB iPod classic for Christmas and I have noticed some annoying differences between iTunes cover flow and iPod cover flow:
    1. In iTunes cover flow, when you have songs with "Unknown Album", they clutter up the cover flow for each artist. In iPod cover flow, they are sent to the back of the cover flow in a nice little "Various Artists" cover. I like how this works on the iPod better.
    2. iTunes cover flow sorts by album artist, so you don't see a separate album for each non-album artist song.
For example: If I set my album artist for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" (don't ask why, this is how i like it sorted) then I will only see one "Saturday Night Fever" rather than one for Bee Gees, one for Kool & the Gang, etc.
iPod cover flow sorts by artist, so you see a separate album for each non-album artist song. I like the way this works in iTunes better.
    3. When sorting by "Album by Year" in iTunes, syncing the iPod doesn't seem to follow the same sorting. Albums are still sorted on the iPod alphabetically. I want them to sort by year on my iPod.
So I would appreciate it if someone could help me with all 3 of these issues. As you can see, sometimes iTunes is better for me, sometimes iPod is better for me.

    3. Playlists should be sorted in the same way as they are in iTunes. The Cover Flow order is fixed.
This is not the case, at least not with iTunes 7.5.0.20 and my 80GB Classic running 1.0.3 on it (current version as of this writing). In iTunes, under LIBRARY, I select Music, and I have my music sorted via *Album by Year*. This works perfectly in iTunes. I'll use my Soundgarden library as an example, as it shows the problem nicely.
    *_iTunes order_:*
    Ultramega OK
    Louder Than Love
    Screaming Life/Fopp
    Badmotorfinger
    Superunknown
    Songs From The Superunknown
    Down on the Upside
    A-Sides
That's ordered by date and is perfect. +Ultramega OK+ was released way back in 1988, while A-Sides was released nearly 10 years later in 1997. In Cover Flow View it works great. However, in the iPod it's sorted alphabetically, which is completely wrong:
    *_iPod Classic_:*
    A-Sides
    Badmotorfinger
    Down on the Upside
    Louder Than Love
    Screaming Life/Fopp
    Songs From The Superunknown
    Superunknown
    Ultramega OK
This is totally wrong. And I haven't yet found a way to force it.
Apple, please, this shouldn't be that difficult.

  • Cover Flow Sorting

Is there any way to change the cover flow from sorting by artist to sorting by album? Sorting by artist, in my opinion, is pointless in cover flow.

Really? That's how my CDs & vinyl are ordered. The iPod Cover Flow order is Album by Artist - there are no options to change this. If you want a pure alphabetical album order just use the album menu.

  • Sorting Cover Flow

    Hi
I know in iTunes we can change the sort order of albums. But how do you do change the sort order of albums on the iPod when you are in the 'Cover Flow' menu?
    Sam

Cover flow order on the iPod is fixed as Sort Album by Sort Artist. Where Sort Album or Sort Artist are blank they assume the corresponding value of Album or Artist. Artists are sorted A-Z, numerals, compilations and albums are sorted A-Z then numerals. You can only affect the iPod cover flow order by changing the relevant fields in the tags rather than via any other options. If you want to put a particular artist's albums in a non-alphabetical order the easiest way is to preprend a sequence number in the sort album field, much like track numbers are used to set the order of tracks.

  • Not all Albums show in Cover Flow

When I use Coverflow not all my albums appear on my iPod. They do appear in the Albums selection area in music on my iPod though and also appear in Coverflow in iTunes.
    Any ideas?

Does the problem persist if you reset the iPod? Cover flow order is affected by the fields Sort Artist, Artist, Sort Album, Album with any leading "The" gerneally ignored. Maybe a combination of these values makes the albums you are looking for appear somewhere else in the Cover Flow.

  • How Can I Get My Cover Flow To Be In "Artist Order" Vs. "Its Own Order"

*I'm A VERYYYYY Organized Person. & I Like My Music To Be In A My Library A Certain Way. AND My iPod Is Putting The Cover Flow In... I Dont Know What Kind Of Order... I Dont Even Know If Their Is A Method To Its Madness! It Seems Like It Starts In Artist Order & Then Switches To Album Order! IDK!!!! I Have All My Music By Artist (If There Is A Feature Artist I Put That Info after The Song Name. I Dont Like Looking At 10 Different Picz of The Same Album. My Music Looks Great In iTunes. But The Cover Flow Is... Just... Just... STUPID!!! Someone Please Help???? =(*

Yes - it does! As Meg says, the coverflow order cannot be changed (or at least, I haven't found a way) and on my Classic the albums by one artist are first and in *artist alphabetical order,* followed (at the end of the artist list) by *various artists (or compilation) albums* which are in *album title order.*
I Dont Like Looking At 10 Different Picz of The Same Album.
Almost certainly, the reason you see several pictures of the same album is because the information in the tracks is confusing the iPod. See turingtest2's links, because they should help you sort out what is wrong.
    Phil
P.S. you may feel that Meg was out of order with her comments about your typing, but she is right - it is difficult to read your post and if you want help, you need to make it easy for the people reading it. It's not simply some "convention" within this forum, it's standard internet protocol. Still, you live in the free world, it's your choice.

  • Cover Flow Album Order

My 4th Gen iPod orders albums in Cover Flow by artist name, which I don't like to begin with, so firstly I'd like to know how to change this to by album title.
Also, even when it does order by artist name, it somehow works fine and then randomly puts a Simon and Garfunkel album right at the end, after 'Various Artists', meaning that particular album isn't even with the others I have by the same artists. This surely completely defeats the point of the artist name order, which I already don't want!
So even if there's no way to change the artist name order thing, I'd like some ideas on why it doesn't work with that one album please!
    Can anyone help me?

I had this issue but managed to sort it...
Cover Flow was putting albums to the "back" of the list. All of the albums that were being put at the back were being classed by iTunes as compilations.
Even if the album is not in reality a compilation it will be listed as such by iTunes if it has any tracks with "artist 1 Feat. artist 2".
    e.g.
Sting's album "Sacred Love" has a track with "Sting Feat. Mary J. Blige"
This meant iTunes classed the album as a compilation... (even if you change the artist details to remove the "Feat. artist" iTunes still classes it as a compilation... very frustrating!)
    _To resolve the issue_
You will need to do this for each album individually (i.e. each album that is being sent to the back of the list) and it needs to be done in the main music library NOT in the playlists that you are syncing...
Highlight the album (all the tracks on that one album)
Go to "get info" (under "File" for any newbies :))
Select "NO" in the "compilations" box.
    This should solve the problem

  • Need help please: cover flow sort order logic

    hi community,
is there a official document / specification from apple where the sort order and the settings of the corresponding tags (album, album artist, compilation on/off) of the cover flow is described?
    AA)
i use diffent ipods. earlier versions diplayed in coverflow:
    1) sorted by artist for compilation = off, following
    2) sorted by album for compilation = on
    this was fine for me.
    BB)
now on my nano 5g order is as following:
    - only 1 list: sorted by artist with all compilations listed in
does anybody know how i can set up the nano to display the cover flow like AA)?
    best regards

s there a official document / specification from apple
If there is, it would be in Apple's Knowledge Base or iPod nano (5th generation) - User Guide.

  • Ipod nano - cover flow sort order nano 5th gen

    hi community,
i'm using different ipods (3rd gen, 4th gen, 5th gen, nano) and i love tagging my mp3s (artist, album, _but not_ album artist)
the sorting in cover flow for my ipod (3rd, 4th gen, touch, _but not 5th gen_) is fine for me: first regular albums then compilations.
with the nano 5th generation sorting is as follows: regular album + compilations mixed - base is artist name ( not fine for me ).
what i want is: first regular albums, than compilations (analogue ipod nano 4th). workaround for this should be: setting of album artist.
my question: do i have to setup my album artist for the desired sort order in nano 5th, and how will be the sort order in cover flow for the future? (e.g. nano 6th gen., + followers (because i don't want to reset my tags weeks later once again ....)
    thanks for your reply.
    best regards

    Hi Damon et al:
I agree with you that you shouldn't have to screw around with the file names. The iPod should allow you to sort in a variety of ways (e.g. any of the fields in the MP3 metadata, and in forward or reverse order). I'm going to keep checking back on this thread to see if more information comes out of it, but it looks to me like a flaw in the iPod OS, not a user-education issue.
    Cheers,

P.S. One would hope that the Apple program managers look at these threads for RFE ideas!

  • Cover Flow in the wrong order

I have had my Ipod Touch for about a week now, and I have about 1000 songs on there. I love using 'Cover Flow' to browse through my music, but whenever I do, the Albums are all in the wrong order. I know this isn't a major thing, but I really like to have them in the same order as iTunes, as I use that a lot as well.
I have tried resetting the Ipod, but I haven't tired restoring it through iTunes cause I don't want to loose all my music and have to sync it all over again.
    Is there a solution?
    Can anyone help me?

One other thing which I think has been happening to many people recently is the change in album artwork. There must have been something wrong with the 2.2 update! The album artwork is fine in the 'Cover Flow' (just in the wrong order!), but when I'm scrolling in vertical view some of my albums have just completley black pictures of the actual artwork!
Btw, all of these things are fine in iTunes, so it must be something wrong with my iPod and not with how I organize my music! Thanks to anyone who can help!

  • Cover flow on IPod Classic is out of order

The cover flow on my Classic is out of order, not alphabetical by artirst. Most of the albums are in order, but there is about a dozen that are after "Z" (for example Cream. Should be in the C section, where it is in ITunes. Any ideas?

Never hurts to reset the device just in case that helps.
Confirm that the Sort Artist fields for the affected tracks are actually empty instead of containing one or more invisible spaces. Note that iTunes groups on Album Artist (order amended by Sort Album Artist) whereas the iPod Classic groups on Artist (order amended by Sort Artist).
See the section Missing or Artist or Album not with others by same artist which explains that enabling one or both of Settings > Main Menu > Compilations or Settings > Music Menu > Compilations can affect where tracks appear in cover flow.
The iTunes Store tends to mark albums that include any featured artists, or form an anthology of an artist's work, as part of a compilation to mitigate some of iTunes historically poor track grouping issues. Depending on your preferences within iTunes this flag may not have any noticable effect in iTunes, but may control what happens on the device.
Even though you can't see where the problem lies it may help to amend the track details in the way I describe at Tried that, there are STILL too many covers and then resync the device.

  • The Cover Flow on my iPod classic is out of order

I use the cover flow option on my iPod classic to get to the music I want to listen to and discovered that my albums are out of order in regards of being alphabetical order by artists. For example the greatest hits and soundtracks and other compilations are moved to the back instead of being in order with the artist that made the album. Is there anyone that can help me resolve this issue?

See my previous post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist.

  • Cover Flow bug? Albums out of alphabetical artist order

Can somebody tell me why certain albums are placed all the way at the end, when viewing Cover Flow on my iPhone?
For example, Jay-Z's Black Album shows up as the very last album... instead of next to other Jay-Z albums I have.
This doesn't happen in iTunes Cover Flow - only when using Cover Flow on my iPhone.
There is nothing wrong with my tags or artist input, or anything - the Black Album is still listed under Jay-Z albums when you touch his name... It's just that when viewing it in Cover Flow, it's out of order. As if instead of Jay-Z, the artist was like 999 (past 3 Doors Down, 3OH!3, etc). The VERY last album.
This has happened to other albums too.
    Anybody????

OMG I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT! It took me hours to figure out how to fix it and it'll take me another couple of hours to make sure the way it sorts it stays consistent, BUT I FINALLY GOT IT! It was secretly sorting it under Sort Album, which was hidden to me and so it sorted it under the origional album name and not what I'd tried to make it. I don't get what the difference is between Sort Album and asking it to sort my albums in alphabetical order, but OH WELL. This has been plauging my iPod for years and I finally figured it out! A million thanks!

  • 80g Classic: Cover Flow Not In Alphabetical Order

Actually, most of it is in alphabetical order. But I have an album by "Mandalay" that shows up last (yup, after the "Z" artists) when in cover flow. Also an album by "Ohgr" shows up twice, both with the complete set of songs (1st instance is correct alphabetically, but shows up a 2nd instance way towards the end in cover flow). Plus a couple other artists with the same "alphabetically-challenged" metadata. I've typed and re-typed every single meta-data and tags several times to no avail. I've even deleted them then put them back but the issue persists. Anyone have any idea?

The albums that come up last are probably marked as compilations.

  • Possible to change how folders are ordered in Cover Flow?

I have a folder containing many folders that always opens in order of last modified. Is there any way I can make this folder open in name order? Obviously once the folder is open I can sort by name, but I want it to open by default in this manner.
Other folders always seem to be sorted by name.
    Any help appreciated.

Once you click the Name title in the list view section of Cover Flow, it should set that folder to always open with it sorted by Name. That is, of course, if you have write access to the folder because the setting is stored in the .DS_Store file in the folder. If you can't write to that .DS_Store file, then the setting won't be remembered.
