Cover Flow view is out-of-sync after deleting files

If you move a file to the trash while in Cover Flow, the file's contents are still displayed but the file is gone. Then as you use the arrow keys to move up and down, the file names continue to be out of sync with the content that's being displayed.
The only way to sync them back up again is to change views or flip to another folder and flip back.
If you continue to delete files based on the content you're looking at, you'll end up deleting the wrong files.

I tried watching them in the timeline and viewer, all out of sync. No external monitor. I did get a message once about dropped frames and something else, it said I might have these issues, but it didn't tell me to change settings, just told me it was gonna happen, lol. So, I don't know where to start to fix it.

  • Finder/Cover Flow is out of sync by one file?

Hi all, I've had this problem for a while and it's really frustrating. In Finder using the 'Cover Flow' option, my files are out of sync by one file. By 'out of sync', I mean the the bottom half of the screen is showing one file but the top half of the screen is 'previewing' the wrong file by one. It's only off by one file, but this is really annoying.
When I use the view options 'Icons', 'list' or 'columns' I don't have this problem. What can I do?
    Thanks for any help!

    com.apple.systemuiserver.plist and com.apple.finder.plist
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/. Move the .plists to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by loggin out/in and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer ones.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.
If you look at the 'More Like This' box (top right) it seems the Cover Flow view is having problems.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Capitalization errors in iTunes 7.2 Cover Flow view

iTunes 7.2 running under OS X 10.4.9 on MBP. Today I ripped a brand new cd to iTunes and two very strange things happened. One is that after ripping, I downloaded the cover art from iTunes and then decided to erase the downloaded artwork, but it still shows up in Cover Flow view. Nothing shows up for the individual files when I look at them individually with Get Info inside iTunes; there's no artwork shown to delete, yet it's still there in Cover Flow. I deleted the ripped music and emptied the Trash, reripped the cd, did NOT download the new album art, and it was still there in Cover Flow view! How could that possibly happen?
The other weird thing is that the workaround I used to fix capitalization errors in Cover Flow view no longer works. The cd I ripped is titled "Myths and Legends" but I changed it to "Myths And Legends". It shows up correctly on the individual tracks but "And" remains uncapitalized in Cover Flow view. The old workaround was to simply add any new character to the album name, e.g. "MMyths And Legend", apply that change, and then reedit to take out the extra "M". Stubbornly, this no longer works! After taking the extra "M" back out, the "And" remains uncapitalized in Cover Flow view. I think 7.2 introduced a bug that breaks this fix and leaves the original bug in tact. Can anyone verify this?

    Over at Dougs:
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/searchTheScripts.php
You will find a script which fixes all the "cap" issues. Try it on a few for a test. Beware of classical music though as it gets funky with stuff like "EMI", etc. breaks it to "Emi".

  • Problem deleting items in cover flow view

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to a new MacBook Pro with running Leopard and I thought that viewing directories using "cover flow" view in the finder would be a great new way to quickly browse through folders containing many pictures and deciding what to keep and what to get rid of. However, I've run into a problem. When I delete an item in the directory, sometimes the highlight bar automatically highlights the next item in the list (what I want it to do), and sometimes it just disappears so that when I press the down arrow, rather than just jumping to the next picture in the folder after the one I just deleted, it jumps all the way back to the first picture in the folder. As you can imagine, this can be pretty annoying when trying to sort through a folder of over 600 photos. I can't figure out why deleting an item sometimes selects the next item and sometimes deselects all items, but I would like to find a way to fix this so I can sort through my photos with ease. Thanks for any info.

  • Cover flow view crash - ok yesterday

Probably not an issue with my video drivers or cover art... because it was working alright for months. Was ok "yesterday".
But whenever I switch to "cover flow" view, iTunes crashes.
In fact, my iTunes crashes on opening (probably because coverflow is the default view), I removed my music library, started from scratch then... I saw the crash again on my empty library when switching cover flow view. So its not library-related.
Did a windows update corrupt something, or my iTunes settings did hara-kiri to themselves in some way?
Some hidden file or registry key I need to reset?
    Thanks

Good news everyone! I got it working, but it wasn't anywhere near what I thought it would be. Thanks to everyone in this post and others I searched the past couple of weeks tracking this down.
Bottom line - while it appeared that the problem was with CoverFlow, and the message pointed to a quicktime issue, it turned out that the problem was with a bad podcast download (believe it or not).
I followed the advice of several different posts to open iTunes while holding down the SHIFT key (the OPTION key for Mac users). For iTunes 7.x, this offers a feature where the user can select a new iTunes library. I managed to open with a new library, and iTunes worked fine (just as it did under another XP account). I tried importing a few songs and used coverflow with this new library, and everything worked fine. So I shut down iTunes, reopened it and pointed it to my original iTunes library, and it crashed again!
So just following basic troubleshooting, I copied my entire iTunes\iTunes Music and iTunes\Arwork folder to the new library I'd created earlier (not the XML or ITL file), then restarted iTunes and it FAILED AGAIN. This told me that there was a problem with some file in one of these folders I copied over. I removed the Artwork folder, and it still failed. When I removed the iTunes Music folder, iTunes opened fine again.
Going deeper, I just copied over a few folders from iTunes Music into my new library, and it opened fine. Through some trial and error, I found that the crashing came back when I copied over the \iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\. This folder had 4 subfolders with names of some podcasts, each with *.tmp extensions. When I purged these *.tmp folders, iTunes worked just fine!!
While I haven't been able to find confirmation, it is my assumption here that when iTunes is downloading podcasts, it first downloads them to the \iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\ folder, and then moves them to the iTunes\iTunes Music\Podcasts\ folder when the download is complete. Since iTunes kept crashing until removed the *.tmp folders, it appears that iTunes reads the \iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\ folder and tries to reprocess any content still in there as part of it's startup housekeeping, and this bad download kept crashing it until I purged it. Once iTunes was able to open without crashing, coverflow continued to work fine, and I could sync/download more podcasts without trouble.
So, if this helps anyone, I'm glad to hear it. Just make sure your \iTunes\iTunes Music\Downloads\ *.tmp files are cleared out if you get quicktime.qt error messages when iTunes crashes when opened.

  • Can Cover Flow view be limited to playback of only one album at a time?

    Hi all,
I've been using the Cover Flow view in my iTunes Library more and more lately (after years of suffering owning a slow machine). But there has been a question regarding playback that has been slightly nagging me for a little while. I couldn't come up with effective search results, so I'll pose the question to the masses.
Cover Flow playback (by default) seems limited to playing through one album and jumping straight into the next album in the Library without stopping. Scroll through the track listing in the lower screen and you'll notice that iTunes lists every track from every album in your Library.
(picture one of those digital bar jukeboxes and an unlimited bankroll...)
Conversely, when clicking the album's title in the default List view, iTunes will only play the tracks in that particular album's playlist, and stop playback once this is finished. I have grown used to this option when desiring to fall asleep to one particular album only... and not the 476 albums which follow it.
Is there a workaround in place to emulate this "List View" playback behavior for Cover Flow playback?
Just curious... if not, it isn't the end of the world - List View will still continue to serve its specific purpose for my needs.
I just have a thirst for knowledge.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Jeremy,
Conversely, when clicking the album's title in the default List view, iTunes will only play the tracks in that particular album's playlist, and stop playback once this is finished.
I'm not sure I follow you here — if I click a track in list view, iTunes always goes on to the next track when it's over (assuming Shuffle is off). If that's the next track on an album, great, but when I come to the end of an album it moves on to the next one.
Or are you talking about the Browser? Selecting an album in the Album browser pane will indeed produce the results you're describing, since the rest of your library will be excluded.
Yes that's correct - my apologies, I was at work at the time and was working from memory. I've had the Browser enabled since day one that it almost becomes second nature.
My iTunes interface, while displaying in List mode with the Browser active, limits the upper display fields to only Artist and Album panes.
And exactly as you said, once the album finishes playing, iTunes ceases playback.
Is there a workaround in place to emulate this "List View" playback behavior for Cover Flow playback?
Yes, but it's a bit clunky: use the Search box to narrow down your library until only one album is displayed.
Yes you are correct - it is a bit clunky. But it does work for the most part, provided that the album title is unique from a song title on another album.
    Thanks for the info Jeremy!

  • Cover flow view in finder not displaying proper

Since I updated to Mavericks my cover flow view in the finder is showing the wrong document, usually the document right before or after the one I'm actually clicked on. How do I fix this?

No, there is no preference setting available to change that.
    Best.

  • Problem w/ cover flow view

To begin I'd like to say I'm not new to message boards and even a forum moderator for the company Streetglow. I've searched for hours trying to figure out my cover flow problem and I just can't get it to organize the way I like. I've had a few problems with itunes in the past but a store rep fixed them within minutes. This is my first big problem.
A few days ago I moved my entire library (I only have music files) to my external HD. The move went flawlessly and itunes even deleted itself in my "My Music" folder. Weird but everything was fine and I checked a song's location and saw that the location lead to my external. This is where the problem starts.
Yesterday, I opened itunes and my entire library is empty. It's as if I just installed itunes on my computer.
So, I re-imported all my files again and went to my cover flow view and I have multiple album art covers for each song. But, if I go to the grid view, its exactly how I want it. Artist....Album...in ascending order. But if I switch to cover flow, I have close to 500 album art covers.
Prior to this, every time I imported a CD, I filled out the info entirely. Kept the artist, and album artist the same. Cover flow view was perfect before this incident.
Now, I have to use the grid view because it's the way I'd like but I would like to use the cover flow.
    Any ideas?

The albums will only stay grouped together when sort as *Album, Album by Artist* or *Album by Year*. Sort on Track title or Track No. and the order of covers will be pretty random. Sorting as Album by Artist groups all albums by the same alphbetically which tends to work for most people. What cues are your browsing for? Artwork, Album title, Artist, Track Name. You can use the search box to type in part of a track name if you're trying to find something specific. If you're just flicking through for something to take your fancy you might find grid mode more useful.

  • Blurry images in cover flow view

why do my tiff files (primarily) look so blurry when I switch to cover flow view on my new mac? I've seen posts about this issue as far back as 2007- has apple still not fixed this, or is it just me? As a photographer it's a major annoyance to have to zoom in on each image to get a good look at it. Little help?

I actually figured out the answer to this one myself, with the help of someone's previous post about creating new thumbnails with a little app called CocoThumbX, which can be used to strip image files of their thumbnails and create new ones. I almost gave up on it, because the new thumbnails I was generating from it didn't show up any clearer. But then I used it to remove thumbnails only, without creating new ones afterward, and the images now look as they should in cover flow. I don't know if there are any negative side effects of not having thumbnails, or even where the original thumbnails were located in the system, but wherever needed, the computer seems to be generating it's own thumbnails for the images, and they're looking good. Hope this helps.

  • Code Execution in Cover Flow View and .mov Files

There is a code inside QuickTime movies that gets executed in Cover Flow view in Leopard!!!!!!!!.
I was helping a friend installing Leopard on his machine, and after restarting, I was showing him the new options in the Finder, when a found a bunch of videos (searched on his computer with Spotlight) and switched to 'Cover Flow View', and then Safari started opening web pages from the internet (Mostly adult sites).
After doing some tests I've noticed that the pages load the moment the Finder 'refines' the view of the videos. You know when the Finder first generates a blocky image of the video (some times called proxy image) and then generates a higher or cleaner resolution of that same video.
Not only that, if I resize the window or the preview pane, the code executed again and Safari opened the pages again!!!!
The Finder also executed the code in icon view with the 'Show Icon Preview' option selected in 'View Options' (Command-J).
Opening the videos in QuickTime Player did not trigger the code. But I've noticed that the videos start playing the moment they open. The Inspector (Command-I) didn't show anything unusual. But the Properties window (Command-J in QuickTime Pro) show a "Sprite Track" of Format 'Sprite' but again the different tabs (Annotations, Resources, Visual Settings or Other Settings) didn't show anything unusual.
*CORRECTION: The code also gets executed at the middle of the video when played in QuickTime. So this problem is related to QuickTime.!!!!!!*
The only solution to stop the code execution is to delete the 'Sprite Track'!!!!.
I also opened the movies in TextEdit and found the following text almost at the end of all the weird symbols:
(I'm sorry but the code disappears when I publish this post).
That's one of the pages that Safari was opening.
I don't know where my friend downloaded those videos, but the potential security risk is imminent.
I had the same results even after updating to QuickTime 7.3
I can upload the videos somewhere (at least the 'clean' ones) so you can make you own tests.
    Any thoughts or comments?????
Is this a known issue in QuickTime?????
P.S. Once again please excuse my English (my main language is Spanish).

If I'm understanding correctly the "Sprite" is a part of how QuickTime works. In older versions you USED to be able to attach JavaScript to a sprite and do all kinds of useful and fun things. However, some websites used JavaScript to alter themselves, so a well crafted QuickTime movie could be used to deploy code that would alter websites. As a result, a LOT of this functionality was curtailed in later versions and many cool QuickTime functions no longer work.
The few that DO still work are when they are basic hyperlinks that take you to another web page, (Like at the end of this movie, BUT you have to click the link to go
    http://www.makentosh.com/tipsfromtheiceberg/Blog/Entries/2006/3/7Somebody_ToldMe....html
) and others no longer work within the browser (they only work when using the QuickTime player). Give this a try. Use Safari to "Open File..." and open the .mov file. After it's open, see if it generates any other windows from there. If it doesn't, then I'd THINK it's operating as intended BUT it wouldn't hurt to send your feedback here for Apple to look into and/or fix it if necessary.

  • Cover flow view problem

I'm having an issue with cover flow view of images in OS 10.6.8
Whenever a jpeg or tiff file is edited in Photoshop (image size not changed) the preview of that picture in cover flow view
becomes smaller, pixelated and it never clears up.
Cover flow displays Raw camera files and unedited jpegs & tiffs correctly, only when an image is edited does it's preview in
    cover flow become distorted.
I really like to use cover flow to browse through photos quickly but this issue is bugging me.
I've been on Photoshop forums and they say it's an Apple issue.  So I don't know where the problem is.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I know this paste below doesn't directly respond to your issue, but the steps below will restore OS X with a new copy and possibily clear up your issue.
There was a recent security update and it's doing very strange things, in your case it will restore a new OS X copy.
Security Update 2012-001 Bricks Rosetta programs
I've outlined the restore proceedure here, it covers a lot of bases and explains what is going to occur so please don't be intimidated it's a LOT easier that it appears.
Take your time and comprehend the steps involved and you'll be backup up like before in short order.
    Restore method.
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Try Restoring from a TimeMachine or hold option bootable clone
If you have TimeMachine drive, or a hold the option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from before the Security Update occured.
Obviously if you didn't make a recent backup before the update, your going to have to skip to Step #3.
Note: A TM restore can take a awfully long time, a clone restore takes under 2 hours in most cases.
If you don't know how to restore from TM drive
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html
    #3 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
If no recent TM or bootable clone then:
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk and Permissions  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
Note: If Disk Uitlity can't repair the drive, then come back to seek further assistance and make sure you have a copy of your data off the machine.
#4 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#5 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Note: For most users likley Step #3 and #4 is likley all that is needed to be done.
    That's it really.

    Unverified hacks
Note: You may see a "hack" for this issue floating around, it has had mixed results as people's software is different.
You may want to try it, but it's at your own risk. It has worked fast for some and not at all for others, hopefully over time it will work for all.
The above methods I outline are Apple approved restore methods + based upon experience here and not a quick fix, but are sure to work as Apple recommends such steps themselves.
If at any time you feel this is beyond your capability, please seek local Mac/PC professional assistance before you lose your data.
In fact my steps above are very simple, you might want to have a family member or friend perfrom the proceedure in about a hour or two.
If you don't have any backup, please maintain at least a TM drive, just hook up a new blank external drive and TM will ask you to make a backup, takes some time so let it work.
If your a bit more skilled, a option bootable clone is much superior than TM drive.
    Good Luck

  • Refresh Cover Flow View

The Cover Flow, Artwork, List window doesn't refresh. As in; you maximize iTunes from the task bar and that part of the program where you're suppose to be seeing the Cover Flow, shows my desktop, or whatever program had the background before opening iTunes. If you go to List View, it gives you the list, then if you click back to Cover Flow view, which you'd think would refresh this window, it still shows the list view items. If you open a window and close it, the part of the window that overlapped the Cover Flow part remains. If you minimize or maximize it doesn't fix it, it doesn't refresh the window to display the correct view. If you click in this Cover Flow window section, it changes the podcasts/albums below so the Covers are there (the code still works for selection), you just can't see them. If you close the program totally, then start it, this window displays as it should. This appears to take some time to "break". If you leave it minimized for a while, or use it throughout the day, never close it but leave it on the task bar, then at some point, after 10 to 15 minutes it seems, it starts doing this.
I have Windows XP. Resolution 1440 X 900, Highest (32 bit) color, GeForce 6600 LE.

  • Cover flow view of music albums

In Music, when I turn my phone sideways now I don't get cover flow view of albums.  Help!  Does anyone know how to change this back?

It's OK - I've worked it out.   Orientation Lock was on.

  • Cover Flow View Options

Is it possible to define my Cover Flow view to display all my videos, after the first 5 seconds, instead of the very beginning?
This was available in one of my office's Mac stations, but no one knows how it was defined to do it so…

Thank you for you help in advance!
Don't know if I quite understand your suggestion. Maybe I'm not making myself clear as well..
I don't want to cut my videos, I want to be able to see the content of my videos (without playing it) right after the intro - so then I can identify and give their ID numbers quickly and easier.

  • Problem with Cover Flow View

Not sure if anyone else is having this problem and I think it was from when there were some Vista updates this morning. Firstly my Podcasts wouldn't play but thats now been sorted by a FAQ but the cover flow view is all messed up and I can't seem to sort it. The covers are there and appear for a couple of seconds and then go green/black and white with lines through them. In Album view, the covers are fine but just the cover flow (which is the one I love to use! Anyone got any suggestions or having the same problem?

Okay. I'm still inclined to check on drivers, because your QuickTime version may have gone up a version with the recent iTunes install. (QuickTime can be sensitive to drivers ... and even though the video drivers are up to date, other driver/whatnot updates on a Dell may also help with video performance.)
The Inspiron 6400/E1505 32-bit vista page is one that i can't get a link for (i can navigate to the page, but the URL that shows up in my web browser once i've gotten there doesn't work for linking purposes).
So try heading to the XP page for that model, going up to the top of the page where it says Operating System: Windows XP Change OS, clicking Change OS, and selecting "Windows Vista 32-bit":
    Inspiron 6400/E1505 (XP)
Once you're at the Windows 32-bit Vista page for that model, check in particular on the following things:
Check to see if the Chipset - Driver for your Intel Mobile Chipset is up to date.
Check to see if your Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505 System BIOS is up to date.
After you've applied any updates (if any are applicable), do you have any better luck with the Cover Flow view?
