In the publishing process via iTunes Producer you will be asked to upload a cover if you want to.

  • How do I create an iBooks ePub? Please read for more info.

I would like to create an epub from a pages document for viewing on the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad. Here is my problem. I have made a whole book, and the whole thing has floating objects, and the epub format doesn't support floating objects, so how do I make an epub with floating objects (I need it in ePub, not PDF, because I want to submit it to the iBooks store, and also read it on my iPod Touch.)
Also, my other problem is that I have pages and pages made, but all of them are square like or longer horizontally, not vertically like the iPhone. How do I adjust all of the pages to fit perfect or well on the iPhone screen?
    Thanks for the help.

I appreciate the help. and I think I've figured it out with your help. To do what I want, here's how:
To resize page size, go to file menu and choose page setup, and choose your size there.
To convert to epub, I haven't done it yet, but you just need to export your pages document to a PDF, because Calibre doesn't support pages documents format, but it supports PDF, so import the PDF to Calibre, and convert it.
For resizing photos, heres the way I figured out, maybe there's a different, easier way, but you just go to "Insert" > "Shape" > and choose your shape, then choose floating object so you can move it around where you want, and resize it BEFORE to the size you want the picture to be, then find your image in finder, and drag it to the shape, and adjust the mask and zoom of the image in the box.
That's all I needed to do. Thank you!

  • How do I view cover in iBooks?

I made an eYearbook. When I open it in iBooks it looks great but it does not allow me to view the cover of the book like it does the other pages. How do I do that? (We have a really cool yearbook cover and kids want to see it on thier device). I can always edit with book creator but that is not preferable.

Two ways that I know of - and you have to tap on the open book in order to see theses buttons in the upper left corner .....
Tap the library button in the upper left corner to put the closed book back on the bookshelf.
Or, tap the three horizontal line next to the Library button in the upper left corner to show the cover on the left side of the book.

I'm trying to change the color of the background of the cover of the iBook I'm creating. I can't find how to.

    Gaby -
Click on Book Title, unlock it, delete.
Select a square graphic, turn Object causes wrap off.
Make the square any color you like.
Enlarge it to cover the page.
Send to back. Lock it down.
    That's it.
Now go here and download this free book, Publishing With iBooks Author, from O'Reilly press.

  • Battle with the iBook & epub

So today I realised that the new "rain-man" (cough cough) edition of iBook with Mavericks is totally beyond normal sense!
You cannot add your ePub books to the iPad or iPhone like we could do with previous versions of iTunes.  Beside that, it is completely impossible to locate WHERE the damned files are loaded/saved.
This doesn't solve the location problem, but does give a workaround for adding ePub books to iBooks on iOS devices.
    http://www.epubor.com/sync-downloaded-books-to-ipad-in-mac-os-x-109-mavericks.ht ml
Just hope that apple gets its head out of the hole and fix this nonsense.
    Cheers

Actually, I couldn't. I had a ePub book from my school. It would show up in the iBook, but i wouldn't see it in the iTunes/books tab to select it for syncing.
I had tried everything and there was no way that it would show up in iTunes.  That's why I started the discussion because I saw many many people having similar problems.
I added the screen shots and you can see that the "Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment" is in the iBooks, but you can't see it under the iTunes/books tab.
The only way i was able to do that was through the link i posted on top.

  • Max size of iBook, ePub images

Trying to create an eBook with illustrations. Sometime a pic appears on two pages.
Is there a stated, maximum size (dpi) for images, so they don't appear on two pages?
Is there a way to control things like having caption always appear with pic?
The recent iBook update (yesterday) said it could not handle designed books with illustrations. Did they publish guidelines other than the Pages template of months back? That template didn't deal specifically with pics, as I recall.
I wish Apple wasn't so silent on the topic of pics and iBooks. iPad is a great platform, but it seems to have to know hoe to program an app to get something nice to look at.

I don't have iBooks with pics other than my own, and the older versions I looked at have the same problem. I recall that the double-tap ability has come and gone in various iterations of iBooks and Pages. It worked in the first version of iBooks, then for a little while it didn't. At some point a few months ago I switched from Pages to Scrivener (whose ePub exports do respond "correctly" to double-taps), and only today tried it again in Pages (because of the iBooks update that allegedly makes it easier to produce illustrated books.
I would like to see an Apple list of what has changed in the recent iBooks update, re handling of illustrations. I've looked on the support page, but they are Apple-ishly vague.
    Some hard documentation, please.

  • External Hyperlink behavior in iBooks ePub created with iWork Pages

I am new at ePup publishing. I'm  using iWork pages and exporting to ePub.  Things were going great until........
I started playing with the hyperlinks in my ePub book in iBooks. I am doing this with an iPad and an iPod Touch. I'm in iBooks, I click on the link, the Safari browser opens and displays the page.  As far as I know, I have to close the browser window to get back to the book. I do this by pressing the home button on the device. Now I have a blank screen. I have to open iBooks again to get back to the book.
This is a bunch of work for the reader of my book, I want them to see a bunch of images. this is awful. It is not acceptable.
Is this an ePub problem or an iBook reader problem? My guess is iBooks but I'm not sure
The system should have the facility to look at the external page within iBooks and press an X button to close it so the reader can continue reading.
So now I'm thinking I will need to go back and insert all the images in my book.  I think I will proceed to do this once I know for sure there is no better course of action.
Smart and knowledgeable people, please tell me, is there a better way to let my reader see images without a bunch of button pressing?

iBooks only syncs purchased books. Others must be synced in iTunes.

  • Ibook epub and image resize

It seems to me that it is impossible to resize epub book with ibooks. This isn't a problem with the text but there are images uninterpretable if not larger. This is a problem with tables too. If you have a scientific text this is a big issue.
With pdf files it is possible to resize everything. This is obvious why a text in pdf would be unreadable.
Until now I used stanza and there are no such limitations.
    Regards
    Gianrico Fichera

I agree completely and have not been able to find a solution. There needs to be a way to zoom in on pictures and text that cannot be changed using the standard texts in ibooks. This is a huge problem for me as I use iBooks for work everyday and run into this problem.

  • Need an ISBN Number for my first ibook (epub)

I just finished my fixed layout book (epub) and its ready to go. I know I need to get an ISBN number before I can even submit the book to Apple to be aproved for the ibook store. But I am brand new to selling anything like this. So is there anyone out their who can tell me what the process is and if there are any tips you can give me?

    Jake,
I can assure you that I don't, haven't and won't be working for epubbud. (You can see more about me and the book at carpeaudience.com) My first experience with epubbud was in purchasing an ISBN number last week that was accepted by Apple. Since it was formatted in iBook Author the only place that eBook appears is on Apple's bookstore (Per contract.)
Recognize that distributing through Apple carries a 30% "Commission" going to Apple on every sale. My take is that is a fair price for the store exposure, digital delivery, reporting and payment processing.
I found a free eBook from O'Reilly Media called "Publishing with iBooks Author" that answered some of my questions. It may still be free at oreilly.com. But your first step is to create an account and decide if you want to abide by the Apple contracts. That can be all done online.
Managing books looks pretty cool. There's a simple dashboard that allows you to control your pricing and distribution. And provides you with feedback during the acceptance process. You'll also need to get iTunes Producer and Application Loader for uploading your books to the Apple store.
All that said, I'm still brand new to the process. Having heard that it takes weeks to go through the acceptance process, I was delighted that it only took a weekend. Wow. Seeing the software and reporting options that are available for iTunes Connect was also exciting. (And an iPad app for iTunes Connect). Getting Promo Codes so I can get promotional copies out is cool too. So it really is with wide-eyed wonder that I am walking down this path.
PS: One more thing on ISBN numbers. It really feels like domain names. You can spend hundreds to register a domain or you can do it for under $10. I was willing to risk a low cost ISBN and it was accepted by Apple. If it proves problematic, I can change.
    Good luck.

  • IBooks & ePub compatibility: error -48

    Hi,
I'm an iPad developer & I'm trying to figure out which kind of .epub files sync correctly with the iBooks app. I'm hearing reports of people experiencing a "could not copy…because an unkown error occurred -48" error while syncing files downloaded from various sites. Maybe we can use this thread to figure out the exact problem people are experiencing?
So: please post the url where you find a file & tell people on this forum if it syns or not ... e.g. project Gutenberg seems to be giving problems.

  • How do I change the name and cover of a ebook in ibooks for mac?

I have iBooks on my macbook pro and would like to change the name and cover of some epub books I dowloaded.  How do I go about doing this, if there a get info like in itunes that I just can't find?

Try Calibre for Mac, available on macupdate.com. It's clunky to have to use 3rd party software, but until Apple fixes the abomination that is iBooks, that's what we'll have to do.

  • What are the pixel dimensions for creating an Apple ibook book cover?

I'm trying to create a book cover for Apple ibooks, what are the pixel dimensions requirements?

    Thanks again.
Apple seems to have made it more confusing than it should be.
As an aside, the Apple documentation contradicts itself.
Cover art (also known as a marketing image or jacket) should be at least 1400 pixels along the smaller axis and must be a JPEG or PNG file in RGB Color mode.
This clearly says the shorter side must be at least 1400 pixels. The next sentence says this:
For an average trade paperback, this could be 400 x 1400 minimum size, as the books are generally taller than they are wide.
That doesn't make sense, seeing that the shorter side is supposed to be at least 1400 pixels, meaning it should say "1400 x 4900" for the same aspect ratio.
    ...I did notice this too.
So, if as you say, that the Cover Art and Cover image terms are the same and the 2 million limit does not apply, then it is unclear to me why Apple sent this message to me about cover file being rejected
"Action Required: Your book could not be delivered to the iBookstore.
The following images are larger than two million pixels and must be resized:
    Full ePub: Cover_xyz.jpg "
I'll probably need to have the cover file in epub and Cover Image for Asset in iTunes Producer be named differently (but be copies of the same file) so I can understand which one is the "problem" file.
And finally, why does Apple refer to Cover Art twice here and then end in last sentence with Cover Image if they are the same ( and if they are the same why not state "this cover image").
"Cover art (also known as a marketing image or jacket) should be at least 1400 pixels along the smaller axis and must be a JPEG or PNG file in RGB Color mode. For an average trade paperback, this could be 400 x 1400 minimum size, as the books are generally taller than they are wide. For best results, deliver the largest pixel dimensions possible. When possible, match cover art to the cover contained in the book file. The 2 million pixel maximum does not apply to the cover image".

  • Backing up .epub files from iBooks

    Hi,
I wonder if there is a way to back up your iBooks .epub files? They're not purchased eBooks, rather, they're fanfiction downloaded from fanwork archive like http://archiveofourown.org/ (if you check the works, there's a neat little link where you can download the .epub and open them in your iBooks). I've got some two hundred files saved in my current iPad. I'm planning on buying a new iPad soon.
Does this mean I'd lose all the .epub files I have in my current iPad?
Is there a way of creating a back-up of these files so I could download them into my new iPad?
    Thanks in advance.

If they are in the iBooks app on your iPad then you should be able to copy them over to the Books part of your computer's iTunes library via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases - that should copy epubs and PDFs that are in the iBooks app, not just actual ibooks.

  • Error in Pages when exporting ePub with image cover: Other images dissapear

That's it, if I insert an image in the first page, and select use first page as cover when exporting ePub, some (not all) other images inside the book will dissappear. I checked everything many times, and all the images are placed ok (not floating)...
    Any idea about this issue?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the Apple forums
Exporting to ePub is new to Pages 4 with the 9.0.4 updaters. It appears that most Pages users don't have a need to export to ePub, so no replies. Sorry.
    For Yvan,
The iPad Pages forum won't help in this situation. The iPad version of Pages can't export to ePub & Pages isn't involved in reading ePub files on the iPad.
