Cover pages for books?

I want to have cover pages for all of my books in iTunes and in iBooks on my mobile devices, just as the album artworks for my music collection.
As I noticed, iTunes and iBooks use the first page of PDF documents as the cover page. For ePub documents, sometimes a cover page is shown, sometimes not. It seems to depend on the online store (or the producer) of the document.
So I got several questions on this topic:
1. Why do cover pages show up for some ePubs and not for others? How can I straighten out the cover pages for these documents?
2. In pdf documents the cover page is almost always included somewhere in the document itself, but not always on page 1. How can I change the cover page for pdf documents from page 1 to say page 3?
3. For mp3s, I can change the album artwork over id3-tags. So the artwork is included standard compliant and is shown when I use other software or hardware to play them. Is there a standard compliant way to add images as cover pages to documents?
Can anybody help me out?

I made a hardcover 11 x 8.5" book of 78 pages and it is holding up fine so far. The first copy that Apple sent me came with the pages pulled out of the binding, but they resent a new one right away. I was skeptical at first that a thicker book like that may not hold up, but so far I'm not having any problems.

  • Print part of a page for book

I have a book in a pdf file that was converted from Cork. The pdf file has lines on each corner and show when i print it. Is there a way to highlight a section of the page and print just that section for all pages? Or a way to zoom in and print the view only? I gave the pdf to Office depot and they were able to print it without the lines but I don't know how to.

    >I gave the pdf to Office depot and they were able to print it without the lines but I don't know how to.
    They probably weren't using Reader.
    >Is there a way to highlight a section of the page and print just that section for all pages?
Use the snapshot tool (looks like a little camera), select the area, go to File>Print, make sure "selected graphic" is selected (should be by default), hit print.
    >Or a way to zoom in and print the view only?
Same thing only zoom in on the area before selecting.

  • How do I get to updates page for books on iPad

I apparently have 51 books needing updated on my iPad Air. How do I get to my updates page please?

    Hi Liz,
You must be noticing the updates badge next to the Purchased button in the navigation bar.  If you click on purchased, you can scan the items for the ones that have an update.

I'm not seeing a filter for "updates only" however.

  • Definitive cover size for books on iPad?

My iTunes Producer uploads keep failing and I get this "support" message:
Your book, vendor ID: XXXXXXXXX, could not be delivered. The following images are larger than two million pixels and must be resized:
    Full ePub:
    /OPS/CoverDesign.jpg..."
This contradicts an earlier "error" trying to upload the book when it told me my dimensions were too small at 1200 x 1920, and that I should make the width 1400 pixels.
Can anyone provide a definitive size - or at least a maximum width or height?

Minimum WIDTH for a cover is 1400.
If you use an image editor which allows allows adjustments of width and height  and "constraint" or any  option that locks the two dimension undo and select only width at 1400  at 72 ppi/dpi what ever you get back -  is OK.
For what its worth I create the cover in iBA,  zoom out  so I can see all the  corners and do a screen grab using Snagit. I edit that with Snagit or Adobe Fireworks as above.
You can  get more information in the iBooks Author Asset Guide - download it from your iTunes Connect page

  • Confused about cover "art" versus cover "page" (ePUB)

I'm just wrapping up the creation of my first fixed-layout book for the iPad, and treading a vicious circle in my mind over the difference between the cover art as I want my book to be represented within the iTunes Bookstore, and the cover page I see referenced in documentation, books, and sample code.  In designing my book I have images/xhtml for the front and back covers (as you'd see in a printed book), and then I have a cover page within my book that acts as "the first page" to correctly align all following pages to work as two-page spreads.  This interior cover page is intended to look different that the exterior cover page.
My confusion is in the specification of elements within the package.opf file.  Is the interior cover page for a fixed-layout book supposed to specify as the "cover" in the <spine> and <guide> elements?
I think my brain is simply freezing around concepts that are probably too simple to grok.
    Thanks!
    John

    Sort of... but not entirely.
I created two versions of my cover: one is simply a jpeg image, while the other is xhtml.  Within the package.opf file I specified the jpeg in the "cover" meta tag, and this image appears on the bookshelf when the book has been loaded into my iPad.  The xhtml version of the cover is the first item specified in the <spine> and <guide> elements so the reader can flip back to a nice full page cover  (and back cover) while reading.
Where I'm now slightly confused is how the cover dropped into iTunes Producer relates to the cover image jpeg included in the epub file.  Does this image:
Represent your book within the iBookstore?
Appear on a reader's bookshelf after the book has been purchased
For me, this distinction is very important, as my book is a fixed-layout landscape book of photography, and landscape book covers look pretty horrible on the bookshelf side-by-side with portrait books.  As such, I designed a very nice looking portrait version of my cover which acts as the cover jpeg in my epub file.  It looks good on the shelf, but once you start reading the full landscape version of the cover appears (which is what I want).
I'd also like the full landscape version to appear in the bookstore, but I don't want this to end up replacing what buyers see on their bookshelf.
Wish there was a little more clarity on how various aspects of a book directly relate to the bookstore.

  • Trying to Create a Cover Page

I am using the Lesson Plan template as provided by Pages '09. I am really trying to like iWork but I often find the simple things are difficult to figure out.
I'm just trying to create a cover page for the lesson plan. There is no Section in the template for cover page so I placed my cursor at the first line of the document, inserted a page break and then tried to format the page.
First thing I did was check on "different front page" from Inspector. But, when I turn off the header and footer for the front page, it turns it off for the whole document.
So I figured I would insert a new section and try to work with it. But, when I insert a section, it puts the new section at the bottom of the document.
    What gives here?

First thing I did was check on "different front page" from Inspector. But, when I turn off the header and footer for the front page, it turns it off for the whole document.
Header and/or Footer use is global but their content is local to each section. You either turn them on or leave them off. If on, you can use them or not as you choose on a section-by-section basis.
So I figured I would insert a new section and try to work with it. But, when I insert a section, it puts the new section at the bottom of the document.
Not a problem. Just turn on the "Pages Thumbnail" option if not already on. Then simply grab the newly inserted section/page and drag it to the top of your other section.
Also, when I try to set the page number to start on the 2nd page and start at 1, not 2, it simply does not work. I set it in Inspector to start at 1 but it has no effect.
Not sure I understand the problem here. Page re-numbering is local to the section. If your cover page is in a separate section and you did not insert a page numbering option, then no page number is displayed. If your physical page two is the first page of your main document body and if you turn on the "Page One is Different" and have a page numbering option inserted into the header or footer, then physical page two also shows no page number. However, if page numbering is inserted into a header or footer and your "Page One is Different" setting is turned off, then a page number will be displayed on physical page two. The actual number displayed on physical page two will depend on the "Start at" number you insert in the section numbering Inspector option. (E.g., if starting with 1, then page "1" will appear on physical page two, page "2" will appear on physical page three, etc. if the section "Page One is Different" option is turned off. If turned on, then no page number will appear on physical page two but page "2" will still appear on physical page three, etc.) However, since you cannot start number with a zero or negative number, you cannot have physical page three (i.e., the second page of a section) start off displaying "1" as a page number. If this is what you want to do, then you must insert another "Section Break" on the first page of your current "second section" so you can reset the number of the second page of the former "second section" (now the beginning of a new third section) to "1" and allow that number to be displayed in your header or footer.

  • Toolbar button/hotkey for "show cover page in two page view" in Acrobat X?

In Acrobat X, how about make a toolbar button/hotkey for "show cover page in two page view"?  I find toggling this option to be useful for changing up the order of adjacent pages in magazines/books in which a two page spread has to match for a full large picture.  Due to frequent toggling, I would like a button/hotkey for this for easier access.

Hotkeys for existing menu items are not modifiable, but you can add a scripted button which toggles it with the following code:
    if (layout.substr(-5)=="Right") layout = layout.replace("Right","Left");
    else layout = layout.replace("Left","Right");
For info on how to add a button with a folder-level script, see the Acrobat SDK documentation. Scripted buttons will appear in a new panel on the tools pane in Acrobat X, not on the tool bar.

  • IBooks previews the another book's cover page upon opening

    Hi there,
I am using iBooks Author. I have created a few books. When more than one book is on the shelf, and I go to open one of them, another book's cover page comes up instead. The content is correct, but it references another cover. If I close and go to another book, it does the same thing. It doesn't happen every time, but maybe 80% of the time. Does anyone know how to fix this bug?
    Thank you.

Hey guys, I opened up a new discussion on this in another thread but I'll try to consolodate it here.
Essentially, I'm looking for a more permanent fix of this issue.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Also, where would be the best place to inform Apple of this bug?

I made a big mistake to change the setting of my Mac book pro to "me only". Now ofcourse It cannot open the login page, for how would the mac know it is me? How can I change the setting back to "everyone"? I have back up in the past but the last month I have not. I really want to keep the data.
So how can I go in and change the setting, It stays ofcourse at the apple screen with wheel. All info is there and the computer works fine, just cannot use it or have been able to log in.

wjosten is spot on.  If you really want iCloud, then you will need to acquire a new or second hand MBP that can run Lion.
    Ciao.

  • How can I change the default page for a book?

I have a book that contains six pages. One of the pages contains the login portlet while the others contain account specific information that a user can only see if they are logged in. Currently, I have the default page set to the login page.
I am attempting to write a backing file for the book that will esentially change the default page for the book to be one of the other pages if the user is already logged in. In effect showing a logged in user their account summary page instead of the login portlet.
I can't seem to find a way to change what page the user is shown with the book and page context classes. I can hide the login page, but this leaves the user looking at a blank page. Unfortunately I can't use entitlements, otherwise this would be easy.
Does anyone know how to "forward" to another page from a backing file?
    Thanks,
    Sam

    Got it!
In your backing file you'll need the following in your handlePostbackData method:
    BookBackingContext bookCtx = BookBackingContext.getBookBackingContext(arg0);
    bookCtx.setupPageChangeEvent("PageLabel");

  • How to get rid of blank white page next to cover page when converting an indesign file into a pdf flip book

    Hey Everyone,
I created an catalog using indesign and now I want to convert that into a pdf flip book. I have exported it as a SWF then changing the SWF back into a pdf. It works great however, I keep getting a blank white page next too my cover page, and I really don't want this. I find it very distracting and visually unappealing. Is there any way to get rid of this blank white page? Or any other suggestions on how to create a flip book out of an indesign file.

It sounds as if you're not checking the pagination properties of the chapter after the problem within the book file.
The book file settings always trump the component file's settings.
So this would mean that, if Chapter 3 is set in the book file to start on a Right page, the book enforces this by adding a blank page to Chapter 2.
You should be able to fix this by selecting all the component chapters in the book, right-clicking and setting all the pagination properties to start on Next Available page, but I don't have 7 on this system so I can't give you the exact key strokes.
