Coverflow bug in finder

This is not a system outage/event which generates diagnostics but genuine issues with OS X found in normal use.
Finder in OS X Mavericks is not updating the coverflow image when a file is moved to Trash. Moving through the filelist changes the image shown in Coverflow but it is the wrong image for the newly selected file. Hence, in doing any further deletions it can be easy to move the wrong files to Trash and end up deleting files which the user wishes to keep ! Difficult to demonstrate in a text message but easily reproducible.

Thanks Pete:
Some time ago I realized that the disussion boards were not read by apple engineers, they are meant I think as some of form of user interaction.
So yesterday I also tried to report the bug, there is a page called apple bug reporter in which you can submit a bug report directly to engineering (you can google "Apple bug reporter" and sign in), in a matter of hours I got a reply that the bug was closed because it was duplicated, which I hope means were not alone and someone is working on it.
In the meantime I have found that refreshing the cover flow by switching views after any move or delete seems to get it right again at least until the next move/delete.
You might want to try out the bug reporter, it is clear that someone at apple does read those, hopefully someone will correct it soon. It's dissapointing not to be able to trust your computer.
I totally agree on the camera RAW, and on the driving me nuts bit.

My Finder folder has 4 items but Cover Flow is showing 5.
I can even click on the erroneous item in cover flow, but it doesn't atually exist.
    Mavericks, everything is updated.
Sure, rebooting or restarting Finder might fix it, but this yet another bug with Finder I have found.

    Hello,
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.
Did you get any of the Install Discs with the Macs?
On the one with no Utilities, might try reapplying the big combo update...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Annoying bug in finder....how is possible that this thing was not noticed?

I can understand that is not possible to see all the bugs, but this is kinda bothering me, because is not exactly a bug that require a lot of efforts at all....here we go, maybe you know about it so iw ould love to know when it will be fixed.
format an USB disk as "apple partition map" (not GUID or boot), now copy a lot of stuff on it (20-30-50 Gb, doesn't matter once that you have more than 5 Gb and you are dealing with a lot of files or packages, and you will see that everything goes fine.
Now copy FROM the USB drive to anywhere else... now start to cry, because you will see messages from finder, saying that an error has occurred and the file is unreadable (-36); then the bar of the copy window stay stuck on the screen and you need to restart finder to make it work again.
a workaround is to copy small quantity of data...but if you deal, like me, with big data moving and stuff like that you wikll understand that is not possible to loose hours to copy stuff one by one, instead of select the entire folder and wait that it will copy.
It works from USB to USB (apple partition map), same from computer to USB (apm) but not on the other direction, so can't be the drive, and i've tried with another USB drive formatted with GUID and it works fine in both directions, while when you format it in APM it won't work form USB to computer (or any other device).
I've updated to the latest 10.5.1, is still doing it.... hoping that 10.5.2 will fix the issue, and please don't tell me to move 2 Tb of data somewhere else because i need to format my disks as GUID and not as APM would be too much to take LOL
BTW, every computer that is sold after Oct receive free leopard even if it does not came with it.... now i wonder if you do the same with the computer bought in september, since i spent money for a mac pro that came with tiger... would be really nice since you put on it all the latest software (ilife 08 and iwork 08) to have also Leopard, since is a business machine that cost 3k and not a toy like a pc that cost 500 dollars
I have a picture to show the issue; but i don't see anything here that let me attach pictures (btw the thing is so evident that you don't need one)
I've upgraded from Tig to Leo; could be possible that this is the problem, but even in this case i would expect that an upgrade, if offered as option, should be able to let the machine to work without flaws like this one...honestly is not acceptable at all, especially from your company.
And please: add the discussion link on the Leopard page in the support section...it took me 20 minutes to find a way to go in the discussion forum (had no idea if there is one, since is not mentioned on the Leopard support page), and is even harder to find a link to post a bug or to send a message to the dev team about issues like that.
Thanks, hope that somebody will take care of this!

    Thanks Ashka and Larry.
I will send a message to the link that you have pointed out; hoping that somebody will see it and fix the issue.
I was expecting that an Apple representative would be on teh forum monitoring the things and checking what happens here....but seems that is not the case
BTW i am glad that i was able to test-drive Leopard....now i know that i can stick with Tiger until the issues are resolved
At the moment the only way that i have to copy files is using the console instead of finder:
    ditto -V -rsrc [source] [destination]
with this command you can copy entirely the files (works differently from cp and is specific for mac, since is a dev tool from apple included in any MAc OSX); so if you have issue like mine you can use this command in terminal and you will be able to copy stuff that won't copy using finder.
BTW now i know that there is a direct url at discussions.apple.com; before i was simply going in the specific software/hardware section and clicking on the link "visit the discussions here", while on Leopard page (and also on other pages, like imovie or itunes), there is no link to the discussions, so if you are not so smart you are basically not able to find the discussion forum site

  • 2px Bug in Finder Tab Panel

  • Bug in Finder for International Users?

I found an interesting problem today with the Finder while logged in as a user with Portugese set as the primary language.
I created a new, standard user while logged in as Administrator. I then logged out, and logged back in as that user. I navigated to the System Preferences -> International -> Language, and dragged Portuguese to the top of the languages list.
I logged out and logged back in as this user (as directed) and the finder seems to start and then restart, over and over again in an infinite loop. It seems the only way to stop the problem is to shut down the computer by holding down the power button.
I am glad I did this to a different user and not my Administrator account.
Has anyone seen this? Can anyone confirm or deny that this is a legitimate bug?
    -isnfaust

    Hello again,
No need to be sorry! We do appreciate the feedback.
You can PM me if you'd like me to take a look at your comp, in case I can aid in isolating and identifying the problem.
    Thanks,

  • Bug report - Finder crashes in Cover Flow mode with large files

I just came back from the Apple store and was told that I have discovered another bug in Leopard. When in Cover Flow view in Finder and trying to browse directories with large ( multiple GB) files, Finder continually crashes and reboots, oftentimes with 2 new FInder windows.
I created a new user on my MBP to remove the effect of any preferences and the problem repeated itself.
Come up Apple... get on top of these bugs and issue some patches...
Not the kind of new OS I expected from a top notch company like Apple.

Ah... that'll be it then, they are 512 x 512. well i guess that bugs been hanging around for quite some time now, anyone got any ideas if anyone's trying to fix it? i guess making 128 x 128 icons wouldn't be the end of the world but it does seem like a step backwards.
one thing that still confuses me... an icon file contains icons of all sizes, why does cover flow not select the right size icon to display?
thanks for that info V.K., much obliged.
    regards, Pablo.

  • Coverflow view of Finder flashes white

Any ideas what might be causing this, or has anyone else the same issue?
Basically whenever I have Finder in the coverflow view, and double click to open a folder, the black space of the coverflow view flashes white.
I had other issues, that haven't recurred - images and video posted here :
    http://www.hpwebdesign.co.uk/macbook/macbook.html
And I've run the extended hardware test with no problems reported, but this just looks like another little thing.

The icons may just take a while to show up. Restart your computer and see if the problem's resolved.

  • Bizarre TOC bug from Find & Replace window

Just sharing really and not even a complaint - I've reported the bug - but this explains a previous loss of data I could never explain, and I thought it might help someone. RH9, Windows 7
    1. Find and Replace in Files
    2. Add a search term
    3. Decide you've mistyped the search term
    4. Try to edit the search term pressing Delete on the offending character
    5. The field has lost focus and won't delete (it gets focus when you start typing a new character)
    6. Look over to your left at the TOC window (if showing)
    7. Your TOC entries are gradually disappearing as you repeatedly press Delete in frustration
    8. DON'T save your project!

...It worked flawlessly then of course.
LOL, isn't that always the case? Sort of like the "critical need" sensor built into every PC. It senses you really need something and promptly crashes and refuses to come back until the time of need has passed. Then, of course it resumes operation as if nothing was ever wrong!
    Cheers... Rick

  • Another Coverflow bug?

On my Classic 160G, after scrolling through coverflow and selecting the an album I want to hear, I push the center button and once the album begins to play, I have the following problem.
Once the album begins to play, if I press the menu button to go back up a level (to coverflow) the iPOD continues to play, but the controls lock up for 30 seconds. The music continues to play and after 30 seconds, the iPOD unfreezes and the time bar moves to the correct location in the song.
It's like during play the menu button is locked? I can move back and forth between songs and pause, but not up a level.
However, if I pause the track and push the menu button, after the 30 second freeze, it goes to coverflow.
I have firmware 1.0.1 and all my songs are MP3 @ 192. Is anyone else having this problem or am I headed back to the store for an exchange?

I think i've found another bug with setBundledExceptionMode(true), this time regarding dates.
If you are using the oracle.jbo.format.DefaultDateFormatter then even with setBundledExceptionMode(true), a java.text.ParseException gets thrown IMMEDIATELY if the inputed date format is incorrect.
I got around this problem by subclassing oracle.jbo.format.DefaultDateFormatter and catching the java.text.ParseExceptionThis is not a DATE only issue. Formatting service as a whole currently sits outside of Bc4J runtime apis and thus "does not" honor Bc4J settings like exception mode etc.
JSPs need to "wrap" such exceptions and honor bundling of exceptions by going thru' the rest of the attributes. I'd log a bug for JSP code=gen for this.

  • Strange Menu Bug in Finder

The last 2 days, the Finder has been acting strange. Most of the time, it's OK, but every so often, the menus lose their highlight color. They still work, but there is no highlight while navigating. The highlight color only appears when a menu item is clicked - like the active state of a link on the web. This happens in both contextual menus & in the menu bar. I have been using Mac OS X since the beginning, but have never seen this before. I wonder if anyone else has seen this behavior?

I'm having the same issue with a user's computer here at work. I am actually typing it from this right now. Tossing prefs files, permissions repairs - nothing.
    It's a G4 Sawtooth with 10.4.11 and using a bluetooth Microsoft Mouse.
    Any luck with this?

  • WebDAV - bug in Finder?

    Hi all,
I want to connect to a WebDAV server via https. The connection works with a WebDAV client (tested with DAV Explorer <http://www.ics.uci.edu/%7Ewebdav/download.html>).
However, connecting with Finder does not work: After my typing in my login, Finder tells me: "You cannot connect to this server because it cannot be found on the network."
DAV Explorer works, Finder does not. What is the problem?
    Thanks for any hint.

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Claus,
It's a classic: Finder can talk WebDAV, but it's much slower than a WebDAV client like the one you're using (or Goliath) and WebDAV via https will need some tweaking.
You're better off using DAVExplorer/Goliath, they're much faster

  • Networking bug in finder

I use multiple wireless networks all of which have multiple shared computers. However sometimes shared section on the left hand side of the finder window seems to 'freeze' and will display shared computers from a different wireless network and never updates. However if I open a save dialog the shared computers appear correctly in that dialogue, but still remain frozen in standard finder windows. Restarting fixes the issue, but I restart once in a blue moon so it's a little annoying.
    Any ideas?
