Coverflow icons

I've tried looking around for a solution but I have been unable to find anything. I've got a two part question.
1- How can I get better icons to show in coverflow? Some of these are Apple defaults. For example, the icon for ".dmg" files shows up like a low res version but ".mp3" shows up nice and pretty. All High Quality like. Is there a way to get previews to show up high quality?
2- Same kind of idea but I can't figure out how to create custom icons for folders that are high quality. In the past I've been able to copy and paste an icon into the "info" window of a folder and that would show as the icon. Now, in cover flow it either doesn't even show up or what shows up is very low quality. I'd like to be able to have nice high res pictures show up for folder icons. Is this possible?
Thanks!

  • Images in Finder/Coverflow SERIOUSLY pixelated

Has anyone had issues with coverflow in Finder seriously pixelating images?
I'm having it in random folders (but not all) and I cannot find any rhyme or reason for it.
Is Leopard generating previews and just not done yet maybe?
Here's an example of what I'm seeing:
    http://www.allenrockwellphoto.com/images/pixelated.jpg
As I said, some folders show images sharp and clear, others show them this way ... there seems to be no logic to it.

I have the same problem with images on the internal disk, although they were copied there from a external after my erase and install. Raw files look fine and so do smaller jpegs. I also see the issue with psd files but not pngs.
I think this has to do with the new higher resolution leopard icons. This is what I think is happening.
Those jpegs were saved on a tiger system. When the file was written there was a icon thumbnail generated at a 128x128 pixels. This was the largest size supported by OS X up until leopard. New leopard icons can be up to 512x512 pixes, W00t!
So as a result your icon preview stored with the file is 128x128 but is being scaled to whatever size your cover flow window is sized to. Hence, causing pixelization (sp?).
To test this I opened one of the problem images in preview, did a "save as" to a new file and voila! beautiful coverflow icons. However, my photoshop CS3 is still unaware that it should be writing higher rez thumbnails. Perhaps I should run adobe updater...
I'm looking for a command line or apple script way to update these thumbnails without changing the modified or created dates so the process can be scripted.
Ideally you should point the script to a directory, find all image files with less than 512x512 icons, regenerate the thumbnail and preserve any modified or created dates.
The sips command line tool doesn't seem to do the trick. Any ideas?

  • How do I strip off custom icons?

I am transitioning to Leopard and a lot of my graphics files have custom icons on them to let me see what they contained.
Cover flow takes these custom icons in preference to a real preview and shows a very pixelated version on screen.
How do I strip them off in bulk, and also preferably reset the file type which was stolen by GraphicConverter when I made the custom preview icons?

To remove icons you could try [CocoThumbX|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26136]. It has a mode to delete icons.
CocoThumbX, at least the version I tried, didn't create hires icons - for that I used [FastIcns|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31205]. You can set it up to run in batch mode, which allows you to setup the icon resolution to 512x512.
This worked, and my CoverFlow icons were sharp and crisp.
(One note however: when I used Icon View in the Finder window where I output the hires icons, the window was unbelievably slow (the rest of the Finder was fine). I sent feedback about that to Apple already, but would like to hear if you experience the same issue.

  • Is this where i report a bug in the finder?

    hi.
I use aftereffects to render quicktime movies.
    I render them,
open them From the finder in Quicktime,
make notes of changes i want to make,
go back and edit them in Aftereffects,
and try to render them again.
this is where the bug is.
after effects sees that the Finder has the file selected, in almost any finder window display type (coverflow, icon, columns) the Finder reports that it has the file open!!!! and Aftereeffects throws a fit, failing the render. This is a big no-no. Apple, I make a pleading request for you to Stop taking over the file completely for a simple preview. Please, make the finder more flexible here, and get it to respect the needs of the applications. my workflow is screwed, and its all because you guys didn't foresee this problem and make allowances for it.
its one thing if Quicktime gives aftereffects a clogged artery over having the file open, but the finder... logically Cannot ever have the file open. I know you added the ability to preview, and thats great, but can't you see that Previewing != opening? Aftereffects can't see it.

Nope, to make a bug report, visit:
    http://bugreporter.apple.com/
However, I think you need to find a comparable place by asking at the http://www.adobeforums.com/ board since your problem is with After Effects.
Edit: You may find out though by changing the subject line to How to solve Adobe After Effects bug?
since that's where you experienced it, more productive as other After Effects users may know the answer. Many specific third party applications get questions answered in the Using Mac OS X Leopard forum:

  • Custom icons 'unclickable' in icon view & not shown in coverflow

    Hi,
I just got off the line with Apple support, who couldn't solve my problem and then just told me that Leopard didn't support what I was doeing and thus that it was not there problem. Very un-apple if you ask me...
    Here's the problem:
I create custom icons for my movies by pasting images (Jpeg's or what have you) onto the icon in the 'Get info' window of a file. This works fine, however when I view the files in icon view I can't select the file by clicking on the icon, only by clicking on the text below. Strangly enough this problem dissapears when I edit the icon size in the 'View options' to a size equal too or smaller then 116x116. At this point I can select the file without any problem.
The same sort of happens in coverflow. Here I can't see the icon in coverflow if the icons are fairly large. Once I reduce the size of the coverflow bar too the point where the icons are very small the custom icons reappear.
The make the matter even more strange this problem only occurs with files where I created a custom icon for since I had Leopard installed. All custon icons created under 10.4 work fine.
This indicates too me that Leopard has problem with handeling the resolution of icons.
Note also that Leopard stores icon images in different sizes. Try copying an icon image from the 'Get info' window, then launch Preview, then select 'File' and 'New from Clipboard'. You will see that there are multiple images here.
Anybody know how to solve this?

Getting the same stupid behavior here!
I had a lot of customized Tiger folder icons but now i've got no good tools for customizing these new huge Leopard ones.
I began using *Icon Composer* from the developer tools after doing the graphics in Photoshop, then using IconDroplet to get them into a form where i can copy and paste them between *Get Info* windows. What a pain.
Now i discover this bit where they're not clickable once i replace them! I didn't know about the behaviors when making them big in *Cover Flow* and small in Icon view until i read this.
I've been snooping around but i haven't found what needs to be tweaked where to allow them to behave properly.

  • How can I have only a specific smart folder in Finder displayed in coverflow and all other folders in icon view?

There are a couple of smart folders actually that i want in coverflow mode only, but the rest i want in icon view. Is there a way to do this? i thought i had it figured out, but then it would revert back to the icon view for everything.

Open one of the folders that keeps changing. Set it to the view mode you prefer. Press Command-J (Show View Options in View menu).
At the top of the View Options screen is an item which allows one to set "Always open in xxx view". Chekmark that.
Repeat for each folder you want.
This is a per-folder setting. Note that the View Options screen is 'live" - you can leave it open, and as you open successive folders it will display the settings for each in turn.

  • Visual static or noise in Coverflow windows and Quicktime quick look icons

I am seeing visual static in the finder cover flow window, and with mp4 quick look icons in the cover flow window. I am guessing that their is corruption in a persistent desktop or finder database or cache. Is there any way to fix this?
    Regards,

The only 'cache cleaning' software that i have is an old Aladdin Spring Cleaning app. But I rarely use it nowadays.

  • CoverFlow Shows Icons Only

I have deleted the thumbnails and now all I have are icon thumbnails. (.jpg)
    Help?
    Thanks!!

iTunes & the iPod may have inconsistent behaviour when it comes to empty values. If you want all tracks with an unknown album value to group together as if one album then the best thing would be to select them all, set the Album field to "Unknown Album" and on the Options tab set Compilation to Yes.
See my previous post on Grouping Tracks Into Albums for more on organising your library and working around some of the quirks of iTunes/iPod.

  • Ios7 doesnt show album cover in albumlists an coverflow

    Hello,
I have a problem after updating the new ios7. After importing music from Itunes, some of the albumcovers are not displayed properly in my iPhone5.
The cover is visible, while playing a single track, but is not displayed as icon in the albumlists or coverflow. Instead only the Albumname is displayed as dummy.
It seems, this happens only with albums, which I imported from CD oder other sources - the Albums I buyed in ITunes are normaly displayed.
I already tried to delete all music from the iPhone and load the music one by one, i tried to reimport the albums to itunes, i deleted and reloaded the Track-Covers in Itunes, I even reinstalled iOS7 from scratch. Nothing helped. Google did not really help, there a People with AlbumCover problems, but not the same way I have.
I did much efford to import all my Music to Itunes and find all Covers, even if Itunes didnt find them itself und everything worked great in iOS6 and in the new IOS i have only empy pictures in coverflow and album list.
I Use a iPhone5 with iOS 7.0.2, Mountain Lioan with the latest ITunes. I Used IMatch in the past, but had so many problems with it, that i deactivatet in on every device und just syncing with cable.
Anyone who has the same problem or/and know any solutions (besides waiting for a new update of iOS and hoping Apple fix it?)
    Thank you

Thank you for your help investigating this issue, as well as providing sample files! I was able to download the zip from the address you linked.
I don't have a USB cord with me, but I'll test this out on newer versions of Firefox OS, then file a bug, and update you on the status.
Thank you for your interest in Firefox OS and the Open Web! =)

  • Preview icon not showing when in thumbnail. (Sketchu

    Hello,
I recently updated my MBP to Yosemite and installed sketchup on it.
The preview icon of my sketchup files are not showing when in thumbnail. But as i increase the size of the icon from thumbnail in viewoption i.e from 64px x 64px to 124px x 124px it shows. So my icon is shown as blank without any app logo. Also when i change my view from thumbnail to coverflow or something it shows. Otherthan thumbnail everything works.
So where is the error in it?
    Please help...
    Thanks
    Amar

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Rest. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • Has anyone bought Suokdu for the Nano? I can't get the game ICON to sync...

Simple issue, could be a bug... I bought Sudoku for my 3rd gen Nano and sync'd up without a hitch, however, in the game list there is no pretty colored icon for Sudoku. Instead, a grayscale picture of a six-sided die. I went back to iTunes to see if games possessed Artwork, and it turns out that Sudoku has a graphic in there. I went through the process of removing and resyncing but no such fix.
Like I said, it's just a little issue, nothing that takes away from the gaming experience however I would hate to purchase more and more games only to get a list of dice icons. Vortex, iQuiz, and Solitaire all look so nice on this amazing little screen.
Am I missing something? Thanks for your help.

I just bought Pac-Man and sadly no icon either. They just look silly. Apple please fix (after CoverFlow issues.) I hate to knit-pick because honestly a year ago I probably wouldn't even care, but Apple has created an Album Art monster out of me.

  • Adobe Illustrator CS2 preview icons stopped working

Has anyone seen this? Is there a solution?
All my .ai previews are now generic icons, they used to appear as a preview of the file under Tiger...This is really annoying -- I have hundreds of these!
(they seem to appear just fine under coverflow!)
    Thanks,
    A

I have the same problem (but I had it with Tiger to). First (with Leopard) it was OK, but it suddenly stopped working. I haven't changed anything and can't get it working again.

  • Finder: Cannot open a certain folder in list or coverflow view (OS9 folder, maybe polluted legacy?)

    PROBLEM SUMMARY:
I observe a very strange Finder bug (already in 10.5, and still now in 10.6), which only occurs within one specific folder with certain Finder view modes (list, coverflow).
    ATTEMPTED SOLUTIONS & SPECULATION:
I already tried everything to fix it, both by GUI and CLI means, such as recursively setting file/folder permissions to default values, erasing .DS_Store and Icon files, etc, but nothing helped so far. The troubling folder and its contents (files and subfolders) is quite old, created still while OS Classic days, maybe it contains some "bad legacy / leftovers", like deprecated filesystem flags or resource forks, which cause the trouble.
    PROBLEM DETAILS:
    This is the directory structure:
    ~/Documents/Songs:
       /Composing
       /Final
       /Patches
       /Web
All folders can be accessed in any view mode without any troubles, except "Composing".
If the parent folder "Songs" is set to icon or column view mode, then "Composing" can be opened.
But in list view (my default view), or coverflow, the opening action, regardless wether via mouse double click or keystroke CMD-ArrowDown, causes no update of the window content. The window content remains in a flawed look and responseless state, only closing or using the return-navigation on the toolbar UI area puts the window content into a correct and reactable state again, or opening a new window and navigating to "Songs" again.
The time-correlating message to this error in the Console.app log reads:
    Finder *** -[NSCFArray insertObject:atIndex:]: index (9) beyond bounds (9)
Interestingly: If you are within "Songs" using the list view, collapsing the folder "Composing" via the triangle symbol successfully renders the folders content, and you can navigate further down in the hierarchy with the collapsing method, and even double-click subfolders, which then open normally in list view. Just "Composing" itself shows this mysterious bug.

Maybe some of the invisible .DS_Store files in your folders are corrupt.
Launch your Terminal and paste the blue code below into it.
Press Return and type in your password - press Return again and wait for the word 'done.' to appear.
    Then quit the Terminal.
sudo find / -name \.DS_Store -exec rm -fP {} \;;echo done.
Next, relaunch the Finder - press Command Option - click and hold down the Finder in your Dock and select Relaunch.
    Good luck,
    Tom

  • File Icons changed in Mavericks. How do I change them back?

I am on a MacBook Pro and, since upgrading to Mavericks, the file icons in the finder have become generic grey icons with the file extension on them. I can no longer see the Word files with little blue icons, Excel file icons with little green icons etc. Weirdly, I can still see the colored file icons in Coverflow view and in List view, but not in Columns and Icons. I can also see the colored file icons when selecting a file to attach to an email. In the file information window (clicking command I when a file is highlighted) the icon in the top left corner is the colored file icon.

Well this solution did not work for the Icon View.  All the other views show the correct icon (and might have before I changed all view types in Get Info > File Options > Uncheck Show Icon Preview
This worked for fixing the Icon View for me.  Pages and Numbers files were fine but not my FileMaker files or Word or Excel (and maybe more).  I opened Get Info on one FileMaker document.  Just below the Red Yellow Green dots at the top is a tiny icon to the left of the file name.  Left click on the icon which looks basically white).  You will see a thin blue line around the icon.  Go up to the Menu Bar (File Edit View etc) and click on Edit then copy.  Then go to the same icon you just copied on the Get Info window and left click then do Edit again from the Menu Bar and Paste.  You can also use the shortcuts cmmand c or command v to copy and paste.  For some magical reason coping a white icon pasted the correct preview to the icon.
Every single icon of programs that won't display icons properly will have to be fixed this way.  I was thinking about using search for file type and grinding it out like orcs or wargs in Lord of the Rings Online.  Apple this isn't a good way to make me have Determination.
