Cox and Mail Discussion

No answer to my question about not being able to receive email...By the way, Mail needs it's own page for discussion.
Edwin has entered the session.
xeqtv: I work out of state.  While out of state, I was able to receive, but not send email.  Now that I'm home, I still wasn't able to send emails.
I found the smtp port was wrong, was 995, but changed it to 25.  Now, I can send and cannot receive.
Where did I go wrong?
Thanks
Edwin: Welcome to Cox High Speed Internet Service Online Technical Support. My name is Edwin and I am here to help you today.
Edwin: Hello, I understand that you have problems with your Email program. Am I correct?
xeqtv: Hello Edwin
Edwin: I will help you.
Edwin: Please try to setup the POP port to: 110
Edwin: Are you still with me?
xeqtv: i changed from 25 to 110, still nothing.
xeqtv: i'm using a macbook
Edwin: Okay, but you change the POP server, correct?
xeqtv: i don't know, it just says port: with a checkbox for "Use SSL" and menu for Authentication
Edwin: The incoming port should be setup for 110
Edwin: Please access the link below and look for your e-mail program in the list, then follow the steps:
Edwin has sent you to http://support2.cox.com/sdccommon/asp/contentredirect.asp?sprt_cid=16d799e1-107f -40e1-b04c-7f95e8bcaf39.
xeqtv: yes, that was the pop settings.
Edwin: Are you sure you have the POP settings to 110 ?
xeqtv: yes
Edwin: Did you restart the program?
xeqtv: a link from the link you gave says to use 995 as the port settings
Edwin: You can try both.
xeqtv: i changed the pop acct name to spop..... and the number to 995.  it now shows me how many messages should be coming in, but nothing actually loads
Edwin: Probably the current server where you are connect is blocking the use of that port, or is taking a lot of time to connect.
Edwin: I will recommend you to contact your current internet provider and ask if they use a different port for when you are connected to their service.
xeqtv: you are my current internet provider
Edwin: One moment please...
Edwin: Okay, just to clarify, you are at your house connected to the Cox modem/
xeqtv: yes
Edwin: Okay, in that case you need to use port 110.
Edwin: Are you using a router?
xeqtv: yes
xeqtv: still nothing
Edwin: Have you tried to connect your computer directly to the modem?
xeqtv: yes
Edwin: Okay, have you tried to access the Webmail?
xeqtv: yes
Edwin: One moment please...
Edwin: Okay, in this case I will recommend you to contact Mac Support department for more assistance with the Email application, to check if there is any setting preventing you to download the emails.
Edwin: You can contact Mac support department using this link: http://www.apple.com/support/
xeqtv: so you're unable to tell me why I'm unable e to get email one day and no email the next.
Edwin: Unfortunately, we can't access the Mac Mail program to check what is wrong, you are using the correct settings, and since you are able to access the webmail the problem is not with the account.

I see some have deleted their accounts and recreated them.  I have a lot of email that I would lose, so that's not an option.
Hook MBP to modem, changed settings to one of 3 recommended by Cox and it works.  Now, to see if it'll work under wireless again.

  • Thunderbird can download and send mail with Cox POP Mail, Mail cannot?

I have Thunderbird and Mail installed.
I can download and send mail with Thunderbird.
I can't even set-up an account with Mail because it cannot find the POP Mail server.
I have Firewall on with ports 25, 110 and 587 open.
This really seems strange that I can use Thunderbird to set up and use POP Mail access to Cox, but not Mail.
    My servers are:
    pop.central.cox.net
    smtp.central.cox.net
I've followed the steps on Cox's support web site, no success.
I've already called Cox, they're clueless.
Thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi Todd,
Well since Tbird works, we can rule out lots of things.
Mail cannot find the POP server
You are using the Welcome to Mail assistant to do this, and when you type in your incoming mail server info it spins the gear a bit, gives an error, and says that if you continue Mail may not work -- yes? What does the error say specifically?
No disrespect at all, but the most likely problem is a typo somewhere / mis-specified username. Please go 'round once more.
    Good luck,
    John

  • Help please-"Application Not Responding" for Safari and Mail

I read in one discussion that if Safari is slow, you can go to Font Book and select the fonts with a bullet to get rid of duplicate fonts. I did that, and then decided to disable some japanese fonts I don't use.
Now Safari and Mail don't work. Mail won't open at all, and Safari launches but doesn't load and I get the spinning wheel.
I used Disk Utility to fix permissions, and that didn't solve the problem, and now my Disk Utility also says "Application Not Responding".
I also went back to Font Book and enabled all the fonts I disabled. Still nothing.
    ( I can use Netscape-so it's only Mac applications I guess)
Any help is very much appreciated.

Wow- i fixed it! I remembered that when I was in Font Book originally, there were some fonts disabled, and I enabled them.
I couldn't remember EXACTLY which ones, but I disabled some I thought were the ones, and VOILA!
Mail works, Safari works...what a relief!
And it only took me HOURS...oh well.
If this might help anyone, here are the fonts I disabled again-

    FancyPants
    HardlyWorthit
    PleasinglyPlump

Anyone know if I should throw these fonts away? maybe a stupid question, but I'm not very good at this stuff and hesitate to change anything.

  • How to get rid of automatically created server accounts in iCal and Mail?

I have recently setup an OS X 10.6.2 Server for our small office. I got the domain name wrong in the initial install and fixed this by doing a complete clean reinstall of OS X 10.6 server (then upgrade to 10.6.2).
The problem is that one of the OS X 10.6.2 clients had been setup to talk to the server prior to the rebuild. Now on this client, I cannot work out how to get rid of or change the automatically created server accounts in iCal and Mail - everytime you login, these are recreated using the old domain name (and of course don't work).
In Mail if you remove the server account (from Accounts in Preferences), it just pops back again. I even removed every trace of the old domain name from the apple.com.mail.plist file but when I re-open Mail that darned server account (with the old domain name) just pops up again.
In iCal its slightly different in that you can remove the account and it stays away while you have iCal open. But as soon as you close and re-open it, that server account just pops up again!
I thought it might be something to do with Kerberos and found a Kerberos file on the client which had the old domain name throughout it - I changed all these references to the new domain name, but still the same behaviour in Mail and iCal.
This is doing my head in. Any ideas?

  • Multiple issues with Mavericks update and Mail

I have a MacBook Pro mid 2009 2,53 GHz 13-inch. It has 4GB of RAM and a Hitachi 500GB 5400 rpm disk with about 200GB of free space. After working on 10.6.8 for a long time I have upgraded to 10.9.2. I formatted the internal disk, made a clean install of the new system and rebuilt from a Time Machine backup I had made before. The system has slowed down to snail speed (even the simplest actions like opening a new window in the Finder take at times 10 to 15 seconds with the spinning beach ball appearing. Also (and maybe even more serious) my emails became completely messed up. First, all headers and mails got mixed up and several mails didn’t appear, after rebuilding the mailboxes about 60% of my emails were completely lost. I would like to recover my mails from Time Machine but it’s impossible to access emails from before the system upgrade. Am I doing something wrong? Is my computer really too old? How can I give a second try at importing all my mails from the old system? This is the crappiest update I have ever had (been working on Apple since 1994).

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • E-mail Discussion Ident

Not a question, nothing awsome to catch the attention of the Pages Team peering over their cubicles, I'm a happy Pages camper not griping, but being glued to Pages Discussions, the daily input of e-mail is horrendous and takes up the in-box, sometimes thrice over. I scroll down to the most recent with the usual notice, "Apple Discussions, etc., etc., iworks updated etc., etc. with no clue as to author or subject. No space left on this 20" display, I open the post and search. Recently, I've seen names of post folks, so maybe progress is being made. But no subject.
Down the road, wouldn't it be nice to look at the e-mail in-box and see "Post by FrankB, DennisG, Peggy and other gurus, or just wee folks like me with the subject compressed to a couple of words without all that long-winded intro from Apple? A time saver. For me, the "subject" is most important. Gosh, the fog count for identification of Discussion posts now a half-page laterally in my in-box makes me cross-eyed. I'm missing something here, no doubt. I've used Eudora for years. Perhaps other servers don't have that problem. I don't know. Not a gripe, however.
Furtheremore, if my hang up is "Page Deletion" and that's all I need help on for the moment, athough there's a world of Guru tips out there like 20k posts for Pages alone this year covering the water front, all I'm interested today until the next problem occurs is how to delete pages. I post my problem and wait for action. So, tomorrow I go to the most recent post in the in-box, delete about 40 of the above, open the category and review today's posts. If I don't see a reply to my post, I sign out. However, if I saw a post with the subject "Page Deletion" in the maze of Discussion intros in my in-box, whambo, open it and I'm on my way.
Finally, wouldn't it be great to see the first year of resolved Pages' Posts in an archive by subject? Or, is that wishful thinking relegated to the too-hard-to-do basket? Think of the time saved to not have to ask Peggy to repeat some of her over fifteen hundred tips for newcomers. And she does that graciously, sometimes three or four times. That could be a time-saver.
And for anybody who doubts, Pages is here to stay. The program will continue to improve! It's a "keeper"!
Plus, for newcomers to the Mac World and Pages Discussions, welcome aboard. Take if from an old Mac Addict who is in other manufacturer Discussion groups, none can compare to what's available to Mac folks rahtchere as we say down in Arkieland. Fantastic! Ol' Jim.

The old posts are archived off. 8^)
The new software, while easier to manage with a few of the internal changes at Apple, is definitely less malleable and flexible. Some people used to have access to removal or moving of poosts, while the mailing routines were easier to manage.
However, you can turn off the email announcements for your own posts in your subscriptions area on the right when you are logged in.
To subscribe to a specific user, click on their name on the upper left of one of their posts, and you will see the option to subscribe to one of their posts. A word of warning on some of the more prolific posters: They can post upwards of thirty times a day, which can increase your inbox conundrums a lot.
A better method of subscribing may be to set up some rules if you use the mail program on OSX. It can organize (I believe) where specific posts, depending on topic, user, etc. Just a quick peek shows that you can use Smart Mailboxes to organize posts in your inbox. Rules can be set up to funnel all the mail to specific places (for example, direct all posts with Pages & discussions that have Peggy (or other names) in the content to a folder marked Pages gurus Direct those which do not include those to the trash. Otherwise you will see all of their posts in any category.
As you can see, it can get messy fast. Apple can direct the mail to you automagically, but you can organize it on your end. If you have any problems, check the Mail forum and post there. Feedback on the forums can be posted here.
An alternative to the mail conundrum (and one which I admit I do not know very much about) is to use the magical RSS button. It can organize things a bit easier as well. Something I definitely have to use better and learn more about myself. Consider it in your arsenal of Discussion.

  • Creating PDFs using Pages and Mail

    Hi,
I'm  a contractor and I use Pages and Mail to to create PDFs of invoices that I email to clients in the form of attachments. I have Mail set up to to send only Windows friendly attachments, and to put them at the end of emails. I have one client, the facilities director of a large community college, who consistently cannot open the attachments; he can read the text of the emails, but he cannot open the attachments. He has to send them to his IT department, where they use a mac computer of some kind to open the attachments, which they send them back to him. I've discussed this with their IT department, and they've told me that they have to use a mac to open my attachments. If anyone can offer some advice on this issue, I'd appreciate it.
    Caoim

I know from my own experience that although there should be no problems with Mail's attachments, just once in a while recipients have the problems you describe.
The solution that worked for me 100% reliably was to install the paid for plug-in Attachment Tamer from: lokiware.info
You can use it for free to test it before committing to purchase, but I'm pretty sure all your recipients will be able to cope with all your attachments.
To elaborate, I used to have to send numerous attachments every day to mostly PC users. Randomly some would complain that I'd either forgotten to include the attachment (I hadn't) or they couldn't read it/open it/save it, etc. It's quite likely the fault was in the way their email client was configured. All I know is that as soon as I installed Attachment Tamer (it was Mail Attachments Iconizer back then) I never had any more complaints. For the knowledge that I wasn't going to be pestered into trying different ways of sending the files I was happy to pay for the plugin.
(Usual caveat: I have no connection with Lokiware, but very happy to recommend their product).

  • I run mac os x 10.9.5 and i can't open apple store and mail application crush

i run mac os x 10.9.5 and i can't open apple store and mail application crush
    any help??
    thanks in advance

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to launch one of the problem apps. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

In General 3rd Party AV Software is Not Required as Mac OS X tends to look after itself.

  • Safari and mail now won't launch

    Hello
I have done something very silly. I run 10.3.9 and downloaded and installed Safari 3 not realising it wasn't compatible. It was allowed to install indicating the install was successful. However Safari and mail now won't launch. Have I lost the apps and is there anything I can do to get them back, particularly mail?
