Cox Priemer speed

Hello, I just recently upgraded to cox priemer speed. They say that instead of 7mb I'm now getting 20mb. But when I do a speed check online it says I'm still getting 7mbs.
Do I need a new router? I'm using the wireless G cable gateway router and have the latest version of firmware. Can anyone help me out? Thanks

Connect your modem directly to your computer and do a speed check online and check the speed...I am sure it will say 7Mbps...

• Changinf from EARTHLINK dial up to COX hi-speed cable

I have the original IMAC flat screen that has operated flawlessly since new in 2002. OSX has been upgraded to Panther some time ago. I now want to change from EARTHLINK dial up to COX hi-speed cable. Please advise the appropriate methods, settings, etc., to keep the internet villans from harming my IMAC.

Well, you really don't have to worry all that much. But it's really simple to set up a high-speed account.
Normally, you'll get the cable modem before anything else. Don't touch it yet, though! After the internet is going to your house, then set up the cable modem. The first time you run it, hook it up to the computer, and it should prompt you to input the username and password, ect. That should be it. Just plug it in and you're ready to go!
Of course, you should use COX's instructions over mine!

• Cox and Mail Discussion

No answer to my question about not being able to receive email...By the way, Mail needs it's own page for discussion.
Edwin has entered the session.
xeqtv: I work out of state. While out of state, I was able to receive, but not send email. Now that I'm home, I still wasn't able to send emails.
I found the smtp port was wrong, was 995, but changed it to 25. Now, I can send and cannot receive.
Where did I go wrong?
Thanks
Edwin: Welcome to Cox High Speed Internet Service Online Technical Support. My name is Edwin and I am here to help you today.
Edwin: Hello, I understand that you have problems with your Email program. Am I correct?
xeqtv: Hello Edwin
Edwin: I will help you.
Edwin: Please try to setup the POP port to: 110
Edwin: Are you still with me?
xeqtv: i changed from 25 to 110, still nothing.
xeqtv: i'm using a macbook
Edwin: Okay, but you change the POP server, correct?
xeqtv: i don't know, it just says port: with a checkbox for "Use SSL" and menu for Authentication
Edwin: The incoming port should be setup for 110
Edwin: Please access the link below and look for your e-mail program in the list, then follow the steps:
Edwin has sent you to http://support2.cox.com/sdccommon/asp/contentredirect.asp?sprt_cid=16d799e1-107f -40e1-b04c-7f95e8bcaf39.
xeqtv: yes, that was the pop settings.
Edwin: Are you sure you have the POP settings to 110 ?
xeqtv: yes
Edwin: Did you restart the program?
xeqtv: a link from the link you gave says to use 995 as the port settings
Edwin: You can try both.
xeqtv: i changed the pop acct name to spop..... and the number to 995. it now shows me how many messages should be coming in, but nothing actually loads
Edwin: Probably the current server where you are connect is blocking the use of that port, or is taking a lot of time to connect.
Edwin: I will recommend you to contact your current internet provider and ask if they use a different port for when you are connected to their service.
xeqtv: you are my current internet provider
Edwin: One moment please...
Edwin: Okay, just to clarify, you are at your house connected to the Cox modem/
xeqtv: yes
Edwin: Okay, in that case you need to use port 110.
Edwin: Are you using a router?
xeqtv: yes
xeqtv: still nothing
Edwin: Have you tried to connect your computer directly to the modem?
xeqtv: yes
Edwin: Okay, have you tried to access the Webmail?
xeqtv: yes
Edwin: One moment please...
Edwin: Okay, in this case I will recommend you to contact Mac Support department for more assistance with the Email application, to check if there is any setting preventing you to download the emails.
Edwin: You can contact Mac support department using this link: http://www.apple.com/support/
xeqtv: so you're unable to tell me why I'm unable e to get email one day and no email the next.
Edwin: Unfortunately, we can't access the Mac Mail program to check what is wrong, you are using the correct settings, and since you are able to access the webmail the problem is not with the account.

I see some have deleted their accounts and recreated them. I have a lot of email that I would lose, so that's not an option.
Hook MBP to modem, changed settings to one of 3 recommended by Cox and it works. Now, to see if it'll work under wireless again.

• Cox adds authenticated smtp, email working seemlessly between wifi and 3g

I had a problem, but it just went away. Background: I have Cox high speed internet at home (in Tucson), and Cox would not let any email go out to any smtp server (authenticated or not, ssl, didn't matter) other than their own. Which meant when my iphone was on wifi at home I HAD to use smtp.west.cox.net, but as soon as I left my email wouldn't send because I was no longer on cox over the air. So I could either optimize for home or road - either set my smtp server priority for cox, or set it for authenticated gmail, or cwmx.com, or whatever. It was sort of messy at best with a list of smtp servers and trying to get the right one into the priority slot (is that game?). BUT, my life has recently changed, although it's a sad thing when an adult prances around saying "cox has authenticated smtp now, yay!" But they do, and it works from anywhere. So what I have now on my iphone is my 3 email accounts, and just a single solitary smtp server - cox. Obviously you need to be a cox subscriber, and you need to know your cox user name, but the steps are here:
http://support.cox.com/knowledgecenter/cox_hsikb_defcontent_view.asp?sprt_cid=1689d919-54ca-496a-b081-cc3617a7d7 f3&sprtver=5
I hope this helps someone who is dealing with smt pcraziness and cox.

Thanks for this! I had figured out the problem on my wife's iPhone due to the outbound smtp servers not being on the cox network when on the ATT EDGE, and wanted to let Apple fix it for us by having another option on the mail account settings: If I'm on WiFi - try smtp.cox.net for outbound email, if I'm on EDGE, use ATT's outbound email.
Glad to see the Authenticated SMTP for Cox and will try that later tonight.
I don't think I'll do the prancing , but my wife will be grateful for this!

• Older Macbook Pro Locking Up Every Few Minutes, Help Troubleshooting Please

Hi Folks,
I've been having problems with the trackpad click-bar acting up, but now suddenly the computer is repeatedly freezing/locking up. Each time I have to use the power button to turn it off, then reboot.
How can I start figuring out what the heck is wrong with it? I'm not even sure what log in console would be useful, if any?? Are there any free or cheap programs that will actually monitor the computer for this sort of problem and record and decipher what is causing the lockups/freezes? Sometimes the screen goes black while the computer is clearly still running, and I cannot get it back without restarting. More often, I'll be in the middle of selecting a menu item, or loading a new tab, or some activity like that, and the screen/computer just freezes, sometimes even with a ghostly image of the drop down menu selection that I'd just selected still showing - and the computer is totally unresponsive to anything, e.g., won't select anything, won't respond to trying to get the finder or system preferences up, just totally frozen. Won't respond to cmd-opt-esc either. Sometimes I'll get the spinning rainbow wheel, rather than no activity, but it will just spin forever, it's not managing to do anything.
Info:
15" macbook pro, probably late 2006/early 2007 model, 2 GHz intel core duo, 2 GB memory, OS X 10.5.8 (e.g., it's NOT under warranty, I'm on my own, and $$s are VERY tight, I need to do everything I can to figure this out myself)
Typically, all I'm doing is browsing the web - so usually all I have open is a magicjack (internet phone), and a web browser. Usually I use firefox (most current version) - but it's locking up even with firefox off and using safari (5.0.4). It does seem to crash faster with firefox, but still far too often with Safari (like every 30 min perhaps instead of 10, this is bad!). In other words, I'm not putting it under heavy load.
It's running off of AC power, not battery (although I gather that a bad battery can still cause problems when running off AC, is that even correct?). I have external speakers plugged into it because often if watching streaming video the volume is too low if just using the computer's speakers. Using cox high speed internet off ethernet.
I've tried letting the computer stay off for 10 min or so then rebooting, it still freezes.
I installed the sophos (sp?) anti-virus, checked the computer, no virus's/trojans/worms.
I don't know where to go from here, please help!

CMCSK, if I have installation disks, I can't find them quickly. I've emailed the friend who gave me this computer asking if they recall sending any or not.
In the meantime, I just ran disk utility verify disk permissions and got this:

I ran it still connected to internet, etc., So, in the meantime, until I can find or figure out if I've even got installation disks, I'll go ahead and disconnect everything, reboot normally, then use disk utility to run verify permissions again & assuming it still finds problem, use repair permissions. I've no idea what the SUID warnings mean, or if anything needs to be done about them.

• Application Server Platform Edition 8.1 2005Q2 fails to start - CLI156

I have installed and re-installed PE8.1 on my laptop many times (with security off). I followed Quickstart and after 60 seconds end up with CLI156. I have upgraded from XP Home Edition to XP Professional. I have been going round and round for the last 4 days. I have searched for CLI156 and have tried many options. Any pointers (if not memory references) would be appreciated.

I finally gave up the ghost, bought a 160G drive, installed it into my desktop, installed Fedora Linux and have not had a problem. Life would be much better if I could get it running on the laptop. My gut tells me that something is wrong with either JAVA_HOME or J2EE_HOME, but I cannot see it.

• Do I need to replace my airport?

I have an older airport express at home, at least 4 years old. I have Cox high speed Internet and use it for my iPad 2 and daughters Pc laptop. The last few weeks each device is not finding our network, so I have to go I to settings and manually choose the connection, then we can get Internet connectivity half the time. the other half it says unavailable or not detected. The airport device is lit green. If I unplug it and wait a few seconds then plug it back into the wall it usually finds the connection, I'd say that works 75% of the time.
I am wondering do I need a new airport device or is it my cable/Internet connection? Thanks for any input.

Before giving up on the current AirPort Express, I would recommend that you perform a complete power recycle of your networking equipment to see if this fixes the issue you are seeing. Please post back your results.
If the problem returns, the next step that I would recommend is to have Cox run a "line check" between their service and the Broadband router that they provided you. Sometimes the signal quality to the cable modem is not up to par and could be the cause as well.
Finally, if they verify that the signal is good, then try connecting one of your computers directly to the modem via an Ethernet able. You could use the one that connects the Express to the modem. Does the problem still exist? If it does, then it could be the modem and I would ask Cox for a replacement. If not, then as you suspect it may be the AirPort Express.

• Netflix "Play" Movies on HDTV

Have Intel late 2008 Macbook 2.0 connected to Sony HDTV via mini DVI to HDMI. After initial startup I see my desktop background image on Sony sans toolbar and desktop icons. Opening up Netflix "Play" movies shows movie on Macbook but not on Sony. However, from another discussion was told to move movie to the right off Macbook screen and low and behold will appear on HDTV. If I move all bot a small sliver of the movie off to the right I can get most all of movie to show on HDTV. In order to pause one needs to "grab" the remaining sliver on Macbook screen and drag back to Macbook screen. Also don't see how one can select "full screen" option with this dragging to the right procedure.
Also on another issue when DVI to HDTV connector is operational my Cox high speed internet connection goes to below dial up speed. Any idea what is going on here?
Would like to learn what others have experienced in watching Netflix movies with Macbook linked to
to HDTV.

Just found solution to part of my question that by going to Display in System Preferences selecting "Mirror Displays" I can see full movie on both Macbook and DHTV without having to move movie to the right of Macbook screen.
Also ran speedtest.net and with new Display setup internet speed is up to stuff.

• I switched to cable and can't get wireless.

I just switch to Cox high speed internet. For that I needed to buy a cable modem. I bought a Linksys BEFCMU10 by Cisco. I'm using a Powerbook running 10.3.9. I have a snow dual airport.
I can get on the net fine if I connect the ethernet cable directly to the laptop. The airport worked fine as of last night when I disconnected it to move it to reconnect to the new cable modem. It had been configured to use dial-up.
I've tried to reconfigure it to use the cable modem instead but so far no luck.
The airport is on. The airport says it's connected via ethernet.
But I can't get online.
So everything works. But I can't get the laptop to connect to the airport wirelessly. I've tried unplugging and restarting everything.
Is there something else I need to do to switch the airport over to ethernet? Should I have used the Airport Admin Utility instead of the Airport Setup Assistent? It is really annoying having to run a cable from the TV to the laptop.

The cable modem has a mac address for the ethernet. I gave that to my ISP provider and the line is working. I can get on the ethernet by using the ethernet cable directly from the cable modem. But when I hook the ethernet cable to my snow airport, I can't. The "airport fan" is all black, the signal is good. But I get a "10" or a "169" DHCP that won't connect. What's the point of an airport card and an airport station if I have to stretch a cable across the living room?
The airport base station worked fine when I was using the dial up modem. I reconfigured it for the cable modem. It worked once. Then I shut my powerbook off and took it to school. When I came home, I can no longer go wireless. Yes, I reconfigured the network to home in the system preferences.

• IChat connection error

I am attempting to Ichat video chat. I have wireless cox high speed internet. i have a net gear router. i am not able to send or recieve ichat. i went to a local cafe w free high speed internet and was able to ichat. what are the possible reason my ichat will not work from my home and what can i do to fix it?

I also had a connection problem with iChat yesterday, and tried changing from the previous port 5190 (No SSL) to port 443 (No SSL), and it worked fine. Then, this morning I found iChat had disconnected again to AIM. Changing to the default port 5190 (tried SSL and no SSL) was not successful, nor was yesterday's port 443 solution.
So, at the moment, no iChat. Is it working for anyone? Can you share you connection settings (Preferences/Accounts/Server Settings) if it is?
Thanks for listening...

• Soon to be a MBP Owner - Concerns

Hello Everyone!
I left the following in another thread. Thank you to those that responded, however I feel it may not be seen by everyone who might have some responses not reading the thread.
Life long PC User, Soon to be 17" MacBook Pro owner. Here is my questions. I am not buying the MBP to run all my Windows stuff LOL!if I don't have to install XP would be great! With excpetion of Windows Photoshop CS2, however I have read all these slowness issues (Bootcamp/Rosetta) etc. I am not a Professional PS Power User I do not live in PS, I do use it quite a bit. I really do not want to have to load XP on my MBP if I don't have to.
I am very happy with the speed I am getting with PS CS2 on a Dell P4 3.06 GHz with 1.5 GB RAM. My thought is based on most of what I am reading going to the MBP (2.16GHz Dual Core) will be an increase in my speed even running through Rosetta etc?
Another question I have I am running Cox High Speed off of a LinkSys Cable Modem (BEFCMU10) and LinkSys Wireless G Router (WRT54GS) should I expect any complications with my MBP wireless capabilities?
Thanks in advance for your answers to my questions.
Successfully yours,
George

For the wireless question, no, at least for me, since I just got this MBP on the 29th, and moved into where I am now where I live with a few other guys, and they use a linksys, i believe wireless G and so on, but if its not completely the same as yours, its gotta be similar, and it works for me.. so i bet it will work for you as well, I expected to when I got here have to set it up, but no, my MBP imediately regonized it and asked if I wanted to connect to it and voila, it connected so.. I don't think you need to worry..

• Quicktime 7.1.1 Crashes everything...

I am stuck in the water. Been reading all of these threads:
Tried reinstalling 7.0.4 using Pacifist,
Then downgraded to 7.0.1 using Apple supplied installer.
I can open software, but when I go to the open or save dialog boxes it crashes instantly. This is true for Photoshop, Quark, InDesign, Imageready, Freehand....those are the ones I've tried.
I can't locate a 7.1 installer...my computer was working fine then.
Any help would be much appreciated guys!
Here'a a crash log...sorry it's the whole thing...wasn't sure which part was important:

• Can't initiate a mutiperson video chat

I have the new imac isight and Cox high-speed and when i try to do video chat with more than one person i get the message that my computer isn't capable of initiating a multiperson video chat.... What is the deal with this my imac is with in the requirements.... What am i doing wrong

Hello Chris,
As EZ Jim said, if they are not capable, regardless of what your capablities, then you still can't do it.
If they are not capable, the message may just be the default way of saying it isn't possible.
If they are not capable, then that is another issue.
I would suggest you try a multi-chat with testers. add EZ Jim, myself, Ralph or any of the other testers into your buddy list. you can find our iChat ID in our profiles. Here is a link to mine Gil Taylor when you see one of us online, you could try to video with us and we can try a multi-video if more than one of us is available. If it works, then we can put to bed the question of your actual capabilites. Note, some testers perfer you send an IM prior to a video request.

There is a lot of sense and nonsense written on heatconducting grease. Its only objective is to fill the microscopic airpockets between the heatsink and the core of the CPU. A pretty comprehensive test has been done comparing various materials from specialised greases, vaseline and would you believe even water!! All materials do the job and the differences are a few degrees only at best. Water did the job as well, but will quickly evaporate. It just showed that any material improving the contact between core and heatsink will do. Use a material that will not dry out. If after months or years it turns to a powdery cake the thermal contact will be gone. Thermal pads are fine and avoid the common mistake of overgreasing. Overgreasing with artic silver is a disaster because it is an electrical conductor too.

• Downloads are really slow

When I want to download some Podcasts (I have iTune 7.0.2 and I cannot switch to an older Version because of the new iPod Nano) with iTune, than these download are very slowly. But when I download the Podcasts dircetly from the server with an ordinary browser, than it is fast. (esa.int or Fraunhofer or 3sat,...)
With iTunes, it takes forever,
So I think it must be a problem with iTunes. So is there any solution to solve this really nasty problem.
PS:
Sync with iPod is very fast
Internet Connection is also very fast
Firewall ist not blocking iTunes
So iTunes itself od iStore ist the problem.

Please test.
High speed internet is relative.
Compare Cox high speed:

With AT&T:
http://www.att.com/shop/internet/internet-service.html#fbid=PhAncYdarWq
Cox has had a lot of complaints when customers upgrade internet speed, but see no change in service because Cox didn't really make any change to accounts, (like we wouldn't notice)
