Cp: com.apple.finder.plist: No such file or directory

Hello,
As the title suggest, I'm having a problem with cp.
As the matter of fact, com.apple.finder.plist is inside the preferences folder but why "No such file or directory"?
The-Universe:~ LS$ cp com.apple.finder.plist com.apple.dock.plist.bak
cp: com.apple.finder.plist: No such file or directory
I learnt this command-line form the "Mac OS X Server Introduction to Command-Line Administration Version 10.6 Snow Leopard", pg 38.
Thanks!
Cheers.

I would suggest having a backup of your whole disk, and particularly of any critical files, before proceeding here.
The the documentation is assuming that you're defaulted into the expected directory, and the path to the plist directory is discussed in the immediately previous section of the manual you're working with. If you're logged into the user you want to edit, the plist files are here: ~/Library/Preferences/
So some of the bash-level commands that can be used here (and that you will want to understand) follow:
ls ~/Library/Preferences/
ls -alR ~/Library/Preferences/
cd ~/Library/Preferences/
ls
ls com.apple.finder.plist
cp com.apple.finder.plist com.apple.dock.plist.bak
The specific error here appears to be that the default directory is not in the expected directory. That's what cp has indicated; that there's no file with the specified filename here. The current directory is what the pwd and cd commands will work with, too. See +man pwd+ and +man cd+ for details.
The Unix layer is comparatively unforgiving, and it's easy to corrupt a disk with an errant command. And the manual you're reading isn't going to explain what are the basics of the Unix file system organization and the bash shell; that's assumed knowledge for that manual, and outside the scope of what that manual is going to be documenting. Do have a backup of your disk, and of your critical data.

  • I can't Disable my Memory Swapping on mac ( launchctl: Couldn't stat("/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist"): No such file or directory nothing found to unload   )

Hi Guys! I really need help here, Im a Web Graphic Designer and i really use alot of Memory on my mac ( i have 8gb ram ).  Everyone told me that disabling the memory swapping would really help alot and tried to disable it.  All of my friends taught me on how to disable it by enerting
" sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist "  on my Terminal
It really works on other MacBPro but i ge this error message
" launchctl: Couldn't stat("/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist"): No such file or directory nothing found to unload "
I tried to look at the folder or directory there is no com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist and its confusing me cause the memory swapping is still working without the com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist.
Can someone help or tell me how to fix this? I would really much appreciate it.

I never heard of anyone doing what you are attempting!
If you have so much memory as you claim I don't see the advantage of running the system in this non-standard way since you probably won't need to write to a swapfile anyway.  And you are asking for trouble if it does need it and it's not there.
Finally, I submit you must have missed or or looked in the wrong place.  In terminal cut/paste the following:
    ls /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist
    It shouldn't report an error.

  • Problems with slow finder and com.apple.finder.plist

I have four users in my marketing department, all running Mac Pros with 10.6. and Adobe CS5 and some other software for design work. Each one has a slowness issue using the Finder (by itself and inside programs (ie, within Photoshop and going to Open)) when accessing our network drives.  Other people, including myself, can access those same directories without slowness.
'Slowness' is an understatement. What would normally take a second is taking 5 to 10 minutes to show content in folders.
When I delete "com.apple.finder.plist" off their systems, and reboot, everything snaps back to being speedy, but it doesn't last and they need to remove that file once a day.
I have two saved plist files before they deleted it, but I don't know what do look for when I view the contents with a plist editor.
Can anyone offer some suggestions on why this could be happening? Or how can I view and see what this file is being hung up on?

Download and run all the cleaning and maintainence aspects of the free OnyX while each machine is offline and reboot, leave offline until all are completed and then put them back online.
See if that clears the issue or reveals some more issues with the checks.

OnyX also has a plist checker under Verify.

  • After installing Mavericks I had problems copying to the server. Was advised to remove the com.apple.finder.plist from Preferences. This worked - but now I have lost the menu bar from my second screen! How do I get that back?

I have tried re-inserting the com.apple.finder.plist into my Preferences folder and re-booting - this didn't work.

First, that cannot be an iBook G4 as that machine cannot run Snow Leopard let alone Mountain Lion.  To run Snow Leopard it has to be an Intel processor, not a G4.  What does it show as the Model Identifier in About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Model Identifier?
Second, if you have erased the hard drive there should not be remnants of any prior content.  Even though Disk Warrior is saying nothing is wrong with the hard drive, it sounds as though there are problems.  You may want to consider simply replacing the hard drive so there are no questions about faults.  A good source is OWC, http://www.macsales.com where they also have on-line videos showing how to do the replacement.
Third, you could also try again to restart using the Snow Leopard DVD/CD and use Disk Utility on that install disk to erase again, and do it a couple times, then try to install.  If it continues to refuse, then it sounds as though there is a fault with the hard drive.

  • How can i get my com.apple.Finder plist back

If I reinsatll Lion will it put com.apple.Finder plist back in the library

I just now noticed that if Disk Utility is open a disk shows up on the desktop and I can eject it normally.   Disk Utility does not, however. show the disk and it sometimes really slow to show Super Drive too.  When SuperDrive does show up and there is a disk inserted should I not be able to see in SuperDrive?

  • Sidebar inoperable and missing com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file

My sidebar seems to be 'broken'. Originally I had a few extra folders added to it along with the usual drives and home folders etc, but whenever I tried to add another folder, or re-arrange the existing ones, it would simply revert back the next time I logged in.
I followed a few suggestions on here and deleted the com.apple.finder.plist file, and I looked for 'com.apple.sidebarlists.plist' on my computer, but couldn't find it - could this be the problem?
Having deleted the com.apple.finder.plist my sidebar has reverted to it's 'out of the box' form, but loses any customisation on restart - ie reverts back to it's default.
Annoying, since I use this feature a lot. Any suggestions, short of a full re-install?!!!

Having this exact problem, and posted on it a while ago in this forum. Never found a solution that was short of reinstalling Snow Leopard.
I restored from a Time Machine backup once but of course that gave exactly the same behaviour.
I've finally decided to do something about it again after trying to live with it but I really need this function to speed up my workflow.
Similarly to the OP I have created separate accounts which do not suffer from the problem - they retain any customisations once restarted.
Also, I cannot find the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file. I'm going to try the same steps suggested here and will report back - in the meantime however if you have managed to solve the problem another way I would be very interested.
I had thought that setting up a new account and transferring over all of my files might be the way to do it but am quickly running into issues (for example, transferring an iTunes library and retaining ratings / playcounts etc....).

However, after I installed the Mavericks (clean install from scratch), my script no longer works. The background images can be changed as before, but there's no com.apple.desktop.plist file exist anywhere in my hard drive.
Does anyone run into similar problems as me? It's driving me nuts! I can't think of any reason that there shouldn't be such a file... Thank you very much!

  • After i had my hard drive replaced, i've gone to get my old emails and am unable to find them on time machine. The file com.apple.mail.plist isn't there. HELP!

Pretty sure this will be some sort of user error, but i'm lost.
I had to have my hard drive replaced, so before taking it to the genius bar, i backed up using time machine. I'd had issues with trying to use Carbon Copy Cloner previously so had formatted the external drive before doing time machine. TM seemed to work fine and copied what looked to be everything. Once i'd got the new hard drive in and went to restore everything, when i looked for the file i need to get to apparently get my mails back (Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist) it's not there.
Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated.
    J

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

  • HT5149 Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found. Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard

Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps.
Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard drive at a Mac Authorized Repair.
Short history of repair and my Final Cut Pro installation:
    1. Macbook Pro stopped working, sendt it for repair. Had the Final Cut Pro installed,
    2. Desided to try a MiniMac and recovered my backup with Time Machine, got the Final Cut Pro working.
    3. Got my Macbook Pro back from repair, did backup on this one as well. But this time only the files not the Applications.
    4. Removed the files as mentioned in HT5149. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found.
    5. When I try to install Final Cut Pro from App Store, it downloads the application as planned. But after download it won´t show in the Application folder nor in the downloads folder, nor will it start an installation prosess. If I pause the installation in App Store, I can see the Final Cut Pro icon in my Dock. (But, as mentioned, after installation it won´t show neither here or in the Applications folder).
Any suggestions on what I should try now?
Thanks for any reply, I´m in deep water here...

Sounds like there is a file you're not getting.  Never do a removal manually.  It's so time consuming and a pain.  There's a very easy and fast way to do this, safely, properly.
Get the free "Final Cut Remover" app from Digital Rebellion (dot com), use this to remove FCP X.
    Reboot the Mac.
    Download from scratch.
If you're not seeing FCP X in your app folder, run Disk Utility to Repair all drives.
If that doesn't help, try running Disk Warrior from Altsoft to repair the directories on all drives.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I repurchased Garageband and I can't get passed the complete installation. I don't seem to have the "com.apple.garageband.plist" file that has been a common solution. Any suggestions?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I repurchased Garageband and I can't get passed the complete installation. I've read through several posts that all reference the "com.apple.garageband.plist" solution. I don't seem to have the referenced .plist. Any solutions or suggestions?

    Did you upgrade from SnowLeopard?
I can't get passed the complete installation
What exactly is happening? Is GarageBand trying to download over and over again?
all reference the "com.apple.garageband.plist" solution. I don't seem to have the referenced .plist.
The property list stores your preferences, but also the settings from the last run of the application.  If that file is corrupted in some way, you might see third behaviour.
You must have this file, for it will be recreated automatically, if it is missing, or you have a permissions problem with your user library.
Perhaps you did look in he wrong place.
in MacOS 10.7. or later the User Library is hidden. To find the Preferences Files use the Finder's "Go" menu:
Quit GarageBand, if it is running.
Click onto you Desktop to bring the Finder forward.
In the Finder Menu press "Go" and hold down the "option/alt" key, until your user library appears in the drop-down menu
Select "Library" and in the Finder window that opens navigate to the "Prederences" folder; move com.apple.garageband.plist to the Desktop.
Log off and on again (don't skip that step!). Retry GarageBand and see if it GarageBand is now downloading the missing content properly.
If that does not fix the problem, post back and explain in more detail what the download problem is.
Why did you "repurchase" GarageBand? If you already owned GarageBand '11, it should be unnecessary.
    Regards
    Léonie

  • ICal refusing to open (com.apple.ical.plist file missing)

I have tried opening iCal and it refuses to open. The icon bounces on the dock, then asks if I want to report the issue to Apple. I have reported multiple times but I don't know how reporting it will help my iCal work again. (See below the dashed line for the error report.)
Since then, I have tried to replace iCal, but the software claims it cannot be installed on this machine.
I have tried to update my current iCal, but no updates are available.
I have browsed the forums and saw that some solutions were if HelveticaNeue was missing from my fonts. Got it.
And then I saw some threads about refreshing the com.apple.ical.plist... That's a problem. I don't have that file in my library at all. I can't seem to find any way to get it either. What can I do?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would suggest using optional install to reload iCal from your installation disks, then download the combo update for your machine and run. Then see will iCal start. If it doesn't, use console.app to see what error messages it reports.
com.apple.ical.plist... That's a problem. I don't have that file in my library at all. I can't seem to find any way to get it either.
It is created by iCal when it runs.

    thanks

System files are hidden by default in Finder now, search for what you want then click the little + button on the top right of the bar that appears when you do a search. A new bar comes up and click the first box (that says "Kind"), change it to "System Files". Then change the box that says "aren't included" to "are included" and your file should show up.

    Any wise wisdom?

The .plist files are almost always preferences. I believe "plist" is short for "property list". It contains a list of keys (configuration options) and settings for each key, similar in some respects to the way the Windows Registry works, except that there is a separate file for each set of settings, instead of a single registry file as in Windows. In this case it's a shared settings file for Mail, but I couldn't tell you anything more about the contents.
You were smart to back it up. Usually .plist files can be deleted without signicant loss, because they will be recreated automatically with default settings. But sometimes they contain important settings that may be hard to set up again, especially if you had help setting up your computer in the first place, or have lost important details that you'd need for setting up an app, such as Mail. But sometimes the settings are trivial, for example the position and size of windows, etc., and do not contain settings you'd care about, which may be in another .plist file or in some other kind of file/database.

  • Many com.apple.mail.plist files in Library directory

I have 1,779 com.apple.mail.plist files in my library directory, all of which are dated September 12, 2010 at seemingly random times all in the PM.
These files are supposed to contain information about Mail preferences and account, right?  Seems like way too many files.
    Can I delete them?
Why was I looking at them anyway, you ask?  Because I was trying to solve the problem of com.apple.quicklook.satellite errors in my log, went into the Library directory to delete the quicklook plist files and notices these mail plist files.
    So, can I delete these?

I would delete them. Only one should exist, and it is located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. To access that folder start with:
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.
