CP8 - Pausing a slide.

I'm still learning Captivate but, to pause a slide to wait for interaction before advancing, you have to include 'Pause' in an Advanced Action when the slide starts or in another interaction. Doing this means that timing or effects, or the ability to 'Show' an object delayed by timing or effects, have no outcome because the play head is stopped. So, how would you show an object after a certain period of time or with an effect when you still need to pause a slide? How to accomplish both a pause and delay or effect when an object appears? Shouldn't this kind of pause (necessary when you want to wait for an interaction before proceeding to the next slide) be the default or at least handled by setting a property of the slide master or some way that doesn't require a manual intervention?
Thanks,
Jeff

There are several possibilities to pause a slide. The easiest one is to use an interactive object: button, shape button, click box or Text Entry Box. They all can have a pausing point (visible in the Timing Properties panel). The timeline is the core of Captivate, where you can time objects to appear later than the start of the slide. Your question is very basic and very vague at the same time. You are talking about 'an effect'... are you pointing at the Effects that can be applied to an object? Those effects have their proper timeline.
Try to avoid the simple action 'Pause' at the Exit event of a slide, it will stop the movie at the first frame of the next slide which is not what you want. Only for very specific situations do you need to pause with an advanced/shared action. I don't know why you think it has to be done so often?
This is an old blog post about the timeline, although the screenshots will not be totally the same, most is still valid: Tiny Timeline Tidbits - Captivate blog
You talk about master slides: if you want to create a custom navigation with buttons, you have to know that only shape buttons can be used on master slides. If the shape button is set to pause, it will always pause at the end of each slide, whatever its duration. Because on master slides you cannot time anything. Why I like Shape Buttons - Captivate 6! - Captivate blog  explains some use cases for shape buttons.

  • CP8 Interactions and slides with audio and closed captions - not working well - please help

Okay, I am using cp8 on a windows 8 64 bit machine. I have placed an interaction on a slide. I also have audio on that slide and closed captions.
When I get to the slide, the audio does not play because the mere fact that the interaction is on there makes the slide pause upon enter. I could have the student click play on the playbar to go, but that is not required on slides without interactions, so I don't like that solution. I also could do an On Enter slide Play Audio and pick the wav file, but then the closed captions don't show up.
So, the question is, how do I have the slide automatically play the audio at the slide level without the student having to click the play button to go?? Slides with interactions should behave just like other slides with objects/widgets on them. This auto pausing thing is driving me nuts!
    Thanks,
      Lori

Lori, this is puzzling! Are you talking about one of the learning interactions included with Captivate? If yes, which one? My puzzlement is due to the fact that what you described is what happened in CP6: interaction paused slide at first frame (I had a workaround for audio). But since CP7 interactions do not pause any slide, you'll have to provide the pause yourself. There are some exceptions (games).

  • How can I pause a slide until the user clicks a button?

I wish to pause a slide until the user clicks a button (which I've created out of a Smartshape). The thing is that I haven't added a click box object over the smartshape but have only set the smartshape properties to "Use as Button". If I were to add a clickbox object, I would get a "Pause project until user clicks" in the options section of the properties. However in using a smartshape as a button, I cannot find this option. I am using Captivate 6. Seems strange as I would have expected to see the same checkbox option even if I were to use a smartshape as a button but I dont. Can't someone help me and let me know if I'm missing something.
Of course I could use a clickbox over my smartshape to achieve what I want, but I want to avoid thsi for two reason:
I want to avoid adding another object when I dont need it.
My smartshape is a right arrow (indicating "Begin"), and I dont want a squarish click box sitting on top of a triangle because that just shows the hand pointer even if the cursor isn't exactly over the arrow button because it enter the clickbox area.
    Thanks,
    Sean

Select the Smart Shape button , go to Properties > Timing accordion > Pause After and set the number of seconds from the beginning of the slide for it to pause.

  • How do I pause a slide without the playbar?

Hi I am using Cap 6 and I do not have a playbar on my published project, I have a back and next button, how can allow the user to stop or pause the slide do I need some java script on a button?

You'll have to use the system variables cpCmndPause and cpCmndResume.  More details about system variables in this  blog post:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/system-variables-in-captivate-6
You can assign the action 'Assign cpCmndPause with 1' as Success action for the Pause button, but would recommend doing it with a standard, not with a simple action (anyway those variables are not available in the dropdown list of the Action accordion). And to play again it has to be 'Assign cpCmndResume with 1'
If you want it to be done with one button, create a conditioal action :
       IF  cpCmndPause = 1
       Assign cpCmndResume with 1
    ELSE
      Assign cpCmndPause with 1

  • Pausing a slide show created in iDVD.

I'm using iDVD to create slide shows and then burning to a DVD, but I can't pause the slide shows when they are showing on the TV. Is there a way to do this?

What do you have for slide timing?  Set to manual and then try again:
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Please pause this slide.

I have a program in Captivate 5.  On one of the slides, I have an image of a man with a "thought cloud" behind and above his head.  I have added text boxes to this thought cloud making the captions appear within 2 seconds of each other.  I have the timeline set so that there is plenty of time for each caption to be read.
The problem is that the slide continues to run on to the next slide as soon as all the caption appear.  I want users to click the "next" button to be advanced to the next slide.  I tried placing a clickbox on the slide with the setting "pause until user clicks" but the slide still rolls on.
One other thing, this may be related somehow, when I play the slide, it starts to run then pauses.  It will then play 2-3 more text captions then pause, I have to continue to click play (in the preview) to get this thing to go.
Any ideas on how to display all the text captions (for the rest of the slide) then pause the slide until the user clicks the next button.
    Thanks
    MC

as lilybiri says, seeing the timeline will give a definitive answer..
Think of the project timeline as one big long filmstrip, that runs from left to right.  Once you start the project, it runs from left to right showing and hiding objects until you tell it to stop.  You tell it to stop with a button that has a pause, or a click box that has a pause.  If you don't tell it to stop and wait, it's going to just truck along through your captions, doing exactly what you told it to do.
When you're inserting a click box with a pause, you need to make sure that pause (the very end of the click box's life) falls within the span of that caption.  So if your caption is on the timeline from the 1 second point to the 4 second point (3 seconds total) you want the pause of that click box (the two thick vertical bars, kind of like this ||) to be somewhere between 1 second and 4 seconds.  I personally would put it at 3 or 3.5 seconds.
So the project starts to run, the playhead moves left to right.  It sees your caption and displays it.  It sees your click box appear and it 'displays' it.  Then suddenly at 3.0 seconds it sees the pause and the playhead stops and waits for the learner to click.  Once you click the box, the playhead is released and it continues to move along to the right until it sees another pause.

  • I need to pause the slide while A role over caption audio plays

I am working in Captivate 4, I have a few audio explanations in role over captions and I need to pause the slide if the learner scrolls over them. currently it will play both the slide & role over at the same time. Anybody got a solution????

    Hi Paco,
Here is an AS3 version for Captivate 4:
    http://www.cpguru.com/demonstrations/as3(cp4)MuteSounds.zip
I don't have CP4 installed on this machine anymore so I haven't been able to test if it works or not.
    Good luck ;o)

  • Having trouble pausing a slide with audio paused

Hi, I have a slide with audio.  I have a hyperlink on this slide, and I would like the slide to pause if someone clicks the hyperlink, then keep playing when the viewer presses the "play" button again.  If the viewer does NOT click the hyperlink, I'd like the slide to play as normal.  I can easily get the audio to stop playing when the hyperlink is clicked, but the slide itself keeps playing sans audio, and the next slide then comes up without the audio ever restarting.  Can someone tell me how to conditionally pause the slide when a hyperlink is clicked?  Thank you!

Did you remove the "Continue playing project" from your click box properties? Right next to the URL is a button with a small triangle on it. If you click that you can define how to open up the URL (new window, current window etc.). At the bottom of that list you need to remove the tick in front of "Continue playing project".

  • Embedded Flash Animation Won't Pause with Slide; Gray Screen on Resume

    Hello,
We've added a Flash animation to a slide but when the we pause that slide, the animation keeps playing. Furthermore, when we resume, the whole movie goes gray.
Extra: this slide also has audio. We could add it to the animation, that's not a problem, but the animation needs to work first!
    Thanks!

It was not the embedded animation that turned gray but the whole slide!
Since the original animation was from Captivate, we just copied the slides instead of trying to embed the swf. Our immediate needs are thus fulfilled. However, in the future, we will try the animation as a slide background if we need to do something similar.
(Unfortunately, I cannot share the animation because of corporate policy.)
Note: The question has not been answered but I marked it as answered because I no longer need an answer.

  • Clicking a button set to open url is skipping pause in slide

Hey there! I must be missing something that's right under my nose... I have two transparent buttons over images on a slide who's actions are set to Open URL or file with infinite attempts. I also am using back and next arrows with click boxes to continue and go back. The click box over the next arrow is set to pause the project until it is clicked. What is happening, though, is that when I play the project, clicking the buttons not only open the URL in a new window, as set, they also cause the project to continue to the next slide.
What am I doing wrong? Am I going about this the wrong way?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi there
Look at the properties where you direct the link to a new window. There is an option there that governs whether a pause is released or not.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Audio does not pause with slide.

Using Captivate 6.  Presentation has audio on each slide.  On one slide, I added a click box with porperty to "pause slide until user clicks", and Go to next Slide.  However,. the slide pauses, but the audio continues to the next slides.  How do I pause the audio when the slide pauses, then resume when the click box is clicked?

Thanks for the "hint".  I attached the audio track to the Click Box (and not the slide), and set the Audio property to
Stop when paused".  That did the trick.  Thanks....Tom

  • Pause on slide during slideshow

Can't figure out how to pause on a slide during a slideshow.  I've seen info about pushing the F key, but that doesn't work for me.  I want the show on 'Normal' so that I can create specific transition and 'holds.'  I tried the 'Self play' and don't understand the difference between a slide show that is all configured to play and loop vs. a 'Self play' one, but I didn't have many choices for timing in Self play, and the F was not working correctly.
    Could use advice.
    Thanks!
    Rob

My apologies, what my brain was thinking and what I sent are a little different.
    Let me start again.
Normal Play presentations advance manually by a mouse click or pressing the space bar, once the next slide has advanced, the presentation will pause. Therefore the presentation is paused after each slide appears. Normal Play presentations are set up in;   Inspector > Document; in the Presentation Type drop down menu; select Normal
Automatic Presentations advance automatically using the transitions, builds and timing set in the Inspector. This type of presentation can be paused using the F key  (freeze). Automatic Presentations are  set up in the Inspector > Document; in the  Presentation Type drop down menu select Normal.
in Inspector > Animate add the ffect then in the Start Transition drop down menu select; Automatically. Set the delay for how long the slide appears onscreen.
Self Playing presentations are used where an unattended presentation is set to run continuously without user intervention, this is called digital signage; examples are hotel receptions  and adverts in shopping malls. The F key is inactive in this setup so that the presentation is not stalled.
Self play is set up in Inspector > Document; change the  Presentation type drop down menu to: Self Playing.
The timing in a self play presentation is set up in Inspector > Animate; change the start transition drop down menu to Automatically and set the delay to the time you want the slide to appear on screen.

  • Pausing a slide CP5

I know this is probably too simple but it is a Monday...
I have a slide with 4 click boxes for the student to select.  I want to make sure they can't advance to the next slide without choosing each of the clickboxes.  Is there an Advanced Action already in CP5 or do I need to build one.

OK, they may click the same click box multiple times to show the text caption.
    Then you'll need a user variable for each click box: v_CB1 v_CB2  v_CB3  v_CB4
Each of those variables will be set to 1 the first time they click the corresponding click box.
At the same time you'll have to check if all the variables have been set to 1, in that case you can show a text caption and a Continue button.
You'll need 4 similar advanced conditional actions for those click boxes:
to show the appropriate text caption and to hide the other 3 text captions, this will be a first decision, mimick of a standard action with the condition IIF 1=1 (which is always so, thus the text caption will be set to visible)
to check for the first click box if it is different from 1, if yes, it will have to be set to 1; this will be the second decision
to check if all variables are set to 1 (AND operator); if yes show the Continue button and the text caption that has to appear when all click boxes have been clicked
rewind to avoid that the playhead moves on

  • Accordian interaction pauses slide.  Any way around this?

    Hi,
I've made a slide that include an audio intro ("click each heading to learn more.")  When I add the accordian widget to the page, the slide is automatically paused and the audio doesn't play.  I worked around this by having the widget appear AFTER the audio plays.  The widget is set to display for 1 second.
But I also have the playbar enabled.  When a user clicks the play button in the player, the slide advances for the 1 second of the widget and then stops.  User has to click play in the playbar again to advance the slide.
Any ideas on how to work around this?  I'd like to have the widget NOT pause the slide.
Thanks in advance for any info.
    Sherri

Here's my timeline.  I have a click box, over a button.  This shows up after the audio.  If user clicks it, the presentation goes to the next slide.  This is not the issue.
The issue is when the user clicks Play in the playbar at the bottom (see below).  When they click "play," the slide advances for the duration of the widget (1 second).  They have to hit play again to go to the next slide.

  • Pausing slides using master slides and widgets

    Hi,
Is there a better way that what we are doing becuase we ware wasting time and we put this process in pace in CP 5.5 and want to know what we can better in CP7.01
We want to have our slides pause at the middle of each slide
    Currently
    - Our navigation buttons are on the master slide . These are custom static widgets to do forward and back because interactive objects cannot be put on master slides
    - so we add a hidden object on each slide to pause
    We have complicated branching becuase
    - we have glossaries and help
    - branched scenarios
So we really need this to work releiably
    Problems
    - our widget doesn't show on the branched viewer
    - we make mistakes using the variable recording the previous viewed slide
We were worried about using a playbar becuase it
    - allows you to exit assessments
    - allows users to skip our simulations
    regards Paul

Your statement '..because interactive objects cannot be put on master slides' is no longer valid since CP6: there is one type of interactive objects that can be used on master slides (or timed for the rest of the project) which are the shape buttons. I have been talking a lot about them:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/why-i-like-shape-buttons-captivate-6
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/toggle-shape-buttons
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/want-a-button-on-question-slide-in-captivate
And I presented a webinar, info and link can be found here: http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2012/09/training-lilybiris-favourite-shapes-to-trigger-ad vanced-actions.html
You could easily replace the static widgets by shape buttons, they are a lot easier to 'style' and very flexible.
One example: if you want just to pause each slide, add a pausing shape button (transparent fill and no stroke) to the main master slide. Because there is no timing possible for objects on a master slide, that pause will always occur at the end of the slide, whatever its duration. You cannot time the pause! If you have a shape button with pause timed for the rest of the project, that pausing point will always be at the same absolute time (relative is not possible, thought I'd seen somewhere a question about pausing at half the slide duration but cannot find it in your text).
I (almost) never use a playbar myself. It is only useful for simple linear projects.
