CPT5 - Variables in Captions - Best font choices to conceal rendering problems?

Hi all - long time reader of these forums (you've saved me many a headache!) but first-time poster.
Thought I'd turn to the forum for help regarding a known issue - the fact that once a variable is dropped into a caption, it dramatically breaks its style, anti-aliasing, and alignment. From what I've read, this issues remains unresolved in both CPT5 and CPT5.5... (If I'm wrong in this respect I will be all too happy though.) For those unfamiliar with the issue, I've attached a screenshot.
What I'd like to know is:
What font choices are recommended to best conceal the effects of this known issue?
While I've seen this bug discussed a couple of times, I haven't found a comprehensive list identifying "safe"(ish) fonts to use as a workaround.
As you can see in the screenshot, Trebuchet MS in BOLD seems to be pretty stylistically similar between the "broken" and "unbroken" versions, leaving only the alignment issues to resolve. Note that I don't want to drop a blank variable into all my captions since I'd rather deal with less alignment/other issues rather than more.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Lilybiri,
Thanks for your reply, and sorry for the delay in my response. I'm working on Captivate for a part-time job currently.
I gave the faux style effects a shot, and while I didn't notice much of an improvement over the hardcoded style sets, I did manage to find a number of fonts which remain reasonably similar to their original versions even when a variable is inserted.
Here are the fonts I identified, showing both hardcoded and faux styles, with and without variables (compare upper and lower for a given row, not left and right):
As seen above, alignment remains an issue, but that's (probably) workable by identifying the shift degree and manually compensating by moving every variable-containing caption by this value.
Hopefully this post will be of use to some other poor Captivate designer who encounters this issue as well.

  • What is the best font to be used in graphs and tables?

I want to know what is the best font (or the most used) for discoverer10g graphs and tables.
I used Arial, Dialog, Veranda, 7, 8, 9 but it seems that there is a space between letters especially on the graph. I’m looking for a font that does not have this space between letters.
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Text caption changes font/colour/size

    Hi
The Recording Defaults for the Text Caption in the prferences has not been altered.
On some slides I need to add a text caption.
I'm finding that sometimes when I click to add a Text Caption the font, colour and size is different to what the default settings are. The default is Arial, 12, #0000FF.
When I manually add a text caption it'll show as System, 10 and black.
Has anyone come across this before?  Is there a way to stop it.  It's really annoying and a time waster to have to manually change the font, size and colour.  And you have to be on your guard.  It's not every time I manually add a text caption, just sometimes.  It's intermittent.
    Thanks
    Anita

    Hi there
The name will vary from version to version.
    Captivate_v10.dat
    Captivate_v20.dat
    Captivate_v30.dat
    Captivate_v40.dat
The location also varies. For me, it is:
    D:\Documents and Settings\Rick\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Captivate
As you can see, D is my drive letter. Yours will likely be C. My name is Rick and is how I log in. Yours will be different. Also, the "Application Data" folder is likely to be hidden from your view unless you adjust Windows to show it to you. And all of this is likely in a different location if you are using Vista or Windows 7. I'm using XP Pro.
Note that you cannot edit this file. Captivate does that internally. About all you are able to do is to close Captvate and delete or rename it. Captivate will then cook up a fresh one when it starts up and cannot locate it.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Using variables in Caption section of Legend Answers view

Is it possible to use variables as Captions in the Legend Answers view? If so, what's the format? Thank you

Thank you for the link - i believe this is covered in docs, however, I wasn't able to get the result I wanted by using any of the variable strings. I'm just getting the string variable output along with my variable name. I should have mentioned that I've tried this before. You know which part I'm talking about right? When you go to Legend , then select caption. I still marked answer as helpful.

  • The best PDF choice for sending pages to iPhoto?

For years I used InDesign (CS3) to design pages for iPhoto books. I simply used the "Save as PDF for iPhoto" choice in the InDesign print dialog box and, presto, the pages appeared in my iPhoto library, ready for insertion. However, when I switched to Snow Leopard, new security features disabled the PDF choices in the InDesign print dialog box. Adobe's workaround is to export the InDesign page as a PDF to the desktop, open the PDF up using Apple's Preview, and send the PDF to iPhoto from there. Works like a charm. However, when I export the page out of InDesign to the desktop, the Export Adobe PDF dialog box offers me several choices of PDF presets and here is where I get confused. The best two choices appear to be "High Quality Print" (supposedly for desktop inkjet printers) or "Press Quality." When I compare them on the screen, the "HIgh Quality Print" PDF looks superior--my black and white images have snappier contrast and rich whites and blacks. However, the "Press Quality" PDF, while flatter, retains more information in the shadows and highlights and, who knows, maybe Apple's printing presses favor this for a superior outcome. Anyway, calls to Apple yielded contradictory recommendations. Anyone have any experience or insight as to which PDF setting would be best? Thank you.

I use goodreader, which is fairly good, and alows for folder creation.
In my quick, unscientific test, just now with a 60+ page pdf with lots of graphics in it, if you spend more than a second or two on a single page, the next one displays right away. If you try to swipe through a bunch in a row, really fast, you get the checkerboard pattern until the new page loads.
AS you are looking at sheet music, this would work as you would definately be staying on a single page for a 1/2 minute or more (dpeending on the tempo of course).
I would still google for sheet music apps that might be more of what your looking for. A coworker (thats left for the weekend already) has sheet music on his ipad and I can ask on Monday what he prefers.
    Till then

  • Limit font choice in indesign?

    Hi,
Does anyone know if it's possible to limit which fonts show as a choice to use in indesign?
So if I had a list of 30 fonts to be available to use in indesign, I can only have them as a font choice in the indesign font drop down menu. So, no system fonts appear in the menu.
If indesign doesn't give this choice, maybe there is a plug-in?
    Regards, Tim

My wife has told her staff that they are only to use 6 pt and 8pt sizes of a particular font (or fonts) for a particular type of project. She also wants to limit spacing options between lines/paragraphs to one or two options.
One user seems unable to conform. Would it be possible for her, as Admin., to use the plug in(s) referenced or some other technique, to pre-set/limit the font/spacing choices for the licensed user who can't seem to format correctly?
The issue is project specific, but the projects are huge and frequent, so the setting would be used or useful again and again. I believe she has upgraded all licences to ID/ CS6.
    thanks
I don't know if it's possible to limit a project that's been packaged to use only the fonts in the document fonts folder that's created when packaging; perhaps someone on the forum can say how to, if it's so.
However, as others have said, a team member who doesn't play by the team rules isn't a teammate. Rather than complete dismissal, it may be possible to reassign the person to projects that don't need this limitation, unless, of course, the same disregard for, or inability to follow, the rules isn't limited to just this one type of project. It might help to offer the person the opportunity to repay the costs of inspecting the files for rules violations and the costs of repairing them, as an alternative to being dismissed.
    Seriously, this isn't professional behavior.

  • What is the best font to use for Thai Language in Flex Mobile Applications ?

Can any one suggest me the best font to use with Thai language ?
Many thanks in advance for your help .

Personally, I prefer uncompressed TIFF or PNG.  But many times it won't matter ... you'll be dropping the images into an SD Sequence, so they will lose resolution on output.

  • What's the best font management system?

I am running Indesign CC on Imac with OSX 10.9.2 with Suitcase Fusion 5. We have several thousand fonts (which are all legal) but a lot are not working for one reason or another (probably old/corrupt) I am in the process of purchasing the newest Adobe master font set and was wondering what in your opinion is the best Font management program as I am questioning Fusion!
Thanks guys (new to the forum so please be gentle)
    Orca

If you upgraded to Snow Leopard, then it would seem that Suitcase 11 is not compatible with Snow Leopard and you'd need to buy Suitcase Fusion 3 for $99.95.

  • Best Font for Subtitles? and other General Subtitling questions?

I've never had to use subtitles, until my current project, so I am looking for some general advice and suggestions.
I will be using PPCS3 (on XPpro) as the subtitles (as in the kind that translate a foreign language) will be permanent.
    So here are my questions:
    1. What is the best font and or what is the most standard font for subtitles? (Font size and other characteristics may be worth mentioning here too.)
    2. Is it possible to have an outline around the text as opposed to shadow?
    3. What are some general rules of thumb for subtitles that apply to broadcast and cinematic productions?
    Thank you.

  • Variable printed using incorrect font - Sapscript

    Hi,
I am using a Sapscript form to print a document. I am printing a variable using a A_SIMP font. When I try to print 2 diff documents each of this document prints the text in either Courier or Times. I want it to be repalced by either Courier or Times and not either or. I tried changing the replacement font for A_SIMP but it does not work.
The paragraph format used does not define any font. I am using a character format which has the A_SIMP font defined. I am using frontend printer and the devide type does not include A_SIMP font in it.

  • Absolute best "export" choice in iMovie 9

OK, I admit I am a techno-tard. I am getting AWFUL output quality of my video after I edit in iMovie, it is pixelated, blurry, just horrendous. What is the absolute BEST export choice. there are so many options, compressor, depth, quality, frame rate, key frame rate, data rate, filter. any help would be most welcome. MY imported file is a DV file resolution 720x576, encoder dvvideo, frame rate 25 fps, bitrate 9000. thank you in advance....I feel like shooting myself in the head the output quality is so terrible. does final cut pro do this Sh%^#?

THis is a bit more complex perhaps. This is all surgical video taken with an endoscopic camera (will have to fing the settings) It burns teh films as mpeg I then convert to mp4 or DV and then import to iMovie for editing. once done I convert to WMV for presentations. maybe I am converting too much but the converted mp4 or DV filed from the mpeg look beautiful when I play in quicktime. it is only when I edit and export on iMovie that the quality looks AWFUL no matter what output seetings I use. Thank you for any help

Fonts are handled by your operating system and installed through the respective System Control panel (Windows) or Fontbook (Mac). On Windows simply type "Fonts" in the search bar in the start menu and when you open the panel/ folder use File --> Add Font. On Mac the procedures are similar, you just need to find the Fontbook app in Applications:Utilities.
