CPU at 100% on stuck process, can't kill?

I was running Personal Backup from Intego without issues on Lion, but have had no luck with Mountain Lion. The backup freezes, one of the 8-virtual CPU cores sticks at 100% and I cannot kill the process, not from the Force Quit menu, not from the Activity Monitor and not from the Terminal using sudo kill -9 pid.
Is there any other way to kill this process without re-booting? I can't even shut down the machine without doing a hard reset.

No idea, but have you tried restoring the phone, and setting it up as new to see if it happens there?
If not then restore from your backup. If the issue comes back then the issue lies wiht the backup file you are using.

Latest firmware improves memory management a bit but the E72's low free RAM is still its weakest point in my opinion.
I use JBakTaskManager at startup and the only think I kill right now is vcommandmanager. I've seen other recommendations of tasks and processes than can be killed to free up RAM but have not tested those in detail yet.

100% complete, stuck @ Processing:merging distributed MPEG segments

I have a 3 machine (proper) cluster and have a 14 hr job stuck in this "100% completer' condition. It's been like that for over 8 hours now.
All machines are up and running and connected to the network. One machine showing a green blob in QCluster icon and QAdministrator shows it's cpatured and processing - I assume it's the one merging segments.
Is there any way to diagnose or recover my job?
I'd hate to have to re-submit a 14hr compressor render :-/

Going to reply to myself and mark this is answered in case anyone else has similar problem.
For whatever reason, QMaster decided not to merge my 4 video segments back together - it was working on it then suddenly stopped for no reason I could find.
I found the job (by date) in /private/var/spool/qmaster/string of digits/shared/ had all of the four complete video segments marked m2v-1 , m2v-2 etc. so I used ffmpegX Tools to Join them together and seems like I have a complete MPEG2 file.

Hired a movie, completed download, got stuck processing, can't reclaim space

Here are the steps that led to my issue:
1. Hired a movie from my iphone 5
2. began download
3. Checked download an hour later and status was 'Processing.....'. Checked
Movies and no Hired icon present in bottom nav
4. 6 hours later, still in Processing
5. Reset phone (held power+menu button util apple logo appears)
6. check download status in itunes store and download starts again but fails due to not enough space
7. Check Movies and rental icon is in Nav and hired movie is listed. Click okay but movie fails to play.
8. Delete movie
9. Go back to itunes download and start to download again
10. Download fails due to not enough space. The deleted movie was removed from the a Rental section but the space associated with the failed download was not reclaimed.

Looks like they've changed the screens overnight - they were different yesterday, you had a set of options on the left-hand side of the page and didn't need to enter a serial number.
You could instead try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history (assuming that hasn't been changed as well) : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that film and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

Hi,
Since there can be multiple reasons for this issue, you can
capture a manual dump of the wspsrv.exe process on TMG server or find some related logs to better analyze this issue firstly.
In addition, what have you done before you encountered that issue?
If you have any third-party programs installed, you can temporary disable them and restart the firewall service to see if the issue persists.

Evenlog viewing causes CPU usage 100% on Windows server 2008 SP2

We have Windows server 2008 SP2 with strange behaviour. When I scroll down events in eventlog viewer CPU usage hits 100% and eventlog viewer freeze. CPU usage is split between 2 processes SVCHOST.EXE (lmhosts, eventlog and Dhcp services) and MMC.EXE.
1)I tried to replace eventlog files with new ones. That didn’t helped
2)After server clean boot problem still exist.
3)When CPU hits 100% usage process explorer shows that from SVCHOST.EXE process CPU is used by service EventLog.
Any ideas how to fix this?

tools and also configured VMXNET 3 - nothing changed :(

Windows event log service has couple of dependencies i.e. task scheduler and windows event collector service. Can try restrating those services ?
In addition to above, try following steps
Change NTFS permission of %WINDIR%\System32\WinEvt\Logs directory, add Local Service and
Network Service, give them FULL permissions.
Stop and Start event viewer service by running following command
net stop eventlog && net start eventlog
Issues like this might occur if the disk (FC or iSCSI SAN or even NAS) has some inconsistencies , this is true in case of both physical and virtual machines
You might want to try running chkdisk as well on the server in question

ASA 5545 NIPS CPU utilization 100%

Hi,
We are having two pair of NIPS SSP and working in Active and standby mode.
All four Devices (ASA 5545 and ASA 5525 SSP IPS) showing CPU utilization 100% on both active and standby devices.
Memory usage is also showing very highly utilized.
Kindly help me resovle this issue.

Hi Dheeraj,
I don't think this is an issue. CPU 100% utilization is reported on every IPS (appliance or ASA software module) and it should be normal.
If you want to see if your device is getting more traffic than it can process, you should look at inspection load.
I hope this will help and it would be nice if someone from Cisco team could reply to this.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

Limit CPU load of a single process

Is it possible to limit the CPU load of a certain process to e.g. 70% leaving 30% for the idle process?
I have some CPU intensive simulations with hard-disk access running over night. Does not make a difference if the job takes 4 hours or 6 hours - I am sleeping anyway. But I'd like to be nice to my beloved MacMini and keep it cool. The room temperatures are pretty hot this summer anyway and I don't know if my MacMini will withstand several hours at 100% CPU load, hard disk access and ambient temps of 38°C (100°F). Just want to be on the save side.
Is there a shell command like 'limit -cpu <process_id> 0.70' ?
Or can I clock my macMini at half the usual clock, i.e. at 700 MHz?
What about a loop: (1) 'kill -s stop <process_id>' (2) wait 3 secs (4) 'kill -s cont <process_id>' (4) wait 7 sec. - How to program that loop in a shell? Which command to set the timing?

Yes, you are right, nice +20 and nice -20 does not make any difference, because the process I want to slow down is the "only" one running (beside residual 5% system load).
Your Mac will be fine even running full-bore.
I am not sure about that.
First, the fans get loud. Unfortunately, the Mac is in my bedroom and I would prefer a system load of 50-70%.
Secondly, I had a compressor job running over night for 6 hours. In the morning, I had a very weird file system corruption. I suspect a 'thermal issue'.

Hello iceman2372. I understand your CPU is running at 100%.
First, you should determine which programs/processes are using your resources. Try the following.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC. This combination opens the Task Manager.
Select the "Processes" tab.
Check the bottom left corner and ensure you're viewing processes from all users.
Click "CPU." This will arrange the processes in descending order.
List the processes which are using the most resources.
Another good step to take is to ensure that your system is free from viruses or malware. If you do not have an antivirus installed I suggest Microsoft Security Essentials. For malware I suggest running Malwarebytes. Make sure to post the results from both of these scans.
It may also be helpful to have your prodcut number. This document can show you where it is located.

Hi,
I believe this would be your Prod system, so don't just cancel it but look at the job log. If it is still processing then don't kill it and wait for the change run to complete but if you can see that nothing is happening and it is stuck for a long time then you can go ahead and cancel it.
But please be sure, as these kind of jobs can create problems if you cancel them in the middle of a job.

Not the best one out there but still it should run good.
vlc, mplayer are even worse the have lots of lags. Havent tried gstreamer yet will look into that.
