CPU Bus damage?

A while back my mobo fried randomly, causing my CPU to be damaged. The situation is now this:  the chip (AthlonXP 3000+) runs at 1050 mhz; the bios says it's auto-setting the BUS to 100 . If I change the BUS to 200 in the bios, I have to power off and on my pc 3 times (every time, without fail) before it'll boot - checking that the BUS is still 200 when it _does_ boot reveals that it is set correctly, but there is no apparent speed increase when monitoring in gkrellm (although if the bus is damaged, since gkrellm communicates with the bios I assume, this isn't surprising, neh?).
My question is this: what would you do in this situation? Is there anything that can be done?

The bios has this setting inside it:
"Save Optimized Defaults"
What that does is query the system components and set them for their intended speed.
If this isn't what you're doing to set the bus speed, then you're doing it wrong.  However, it thoeretically should work to set it manually.  IMO, you should test the RAM, because the motherboard is typically smart enough to find the most stable setting by default (if the RAM is in that bad a shape).
But, depending on the board, the capacitors on the motherboard could be bad, which would also elicit memtest86 errors.

  • Altering cpu bus clock

I recently changed my cpu bus on my 865P Neo motherboard, with a P4 2.8 (hyperthread) from 200, to 400  :D   The computer now no longer gives any output to the monitor, so I am unable to re enter bios.  I realize I have killed something in there.  What do you think it is? Just the motherboard, or will I have to purchase a new processor as well? 8)

YES! thank you very much for the help, its now back up and running normally....... i think i love you, TAKE ME! TAKE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Overclock DRAM but can't overclock CPU Bus?

    Perhaps you can help,
I've been lurking here for a few weeks and have used your sage advice to boost my 1.8 Ghz P4 to 2.25 by adjusting the DRAM freq from Auto to 333.  I'd like to get a bit more speed out of it but the CPU bus gets greyed out when the DRAM Freq is anything other than Auto.  I tried 400 on the Dram but no post (Oh, so that's where the jbat1 jumper is... )  Would a bios upgrade enable the DRAM overclock WITH the CPU overclock or am I hardware constrained?
    Thanks

Yes; your CPU, Can be moved to a higher clock speed, but be careful, as You did Mention that you Increased your FSB (Front Side Bus) Speed, or CPU Speed From 100 MHZ to 125 MHZ, Which tells Me that your P-4 CPU is of the Older "Willamette" Core, which are not known to be as good Overclockers as the Newer "Northwood" Core P-4's......So You have problably only a little more room as far as overclocking goes, And Make sure that you keep your eye on the CPU temperature, as you do NOT want it getting into the +60C Range for long periods...So as babyfaceuk has stated, you are indeed Overcloking Both the CPU and The Memory Bus when you Increase the CPU (Or as Most call it the FSB) speed, and dont forget that you have in the sense of the word, Underclocked your DRAM, by Changing (Lowering) the Ratio to 333 MHZ, or 5:4, when the Memory is Rated to run at 400 MHZ speeds, so you have to look Benchmark wise, Are you getting Better Scores by underclocking your Memory in order to overclock your CPU, or would you get better Scores by leaving your Memory set to 400 MHZ, or a 1:1 Ratio, and only Bring your FSB, or CPU speed to 108 MHZ or 110 MHZ? ....These are things that you have to try, As I think that you would be suprised at how High you can Get your Benchmark Scores, or overall Performance to Increase with a happy medium between both CPU and Memory, and on top of it all, Your system will run Better overall at a 1:1(400 MHZ Memory) Syncronous Ratio .....But thats Just My Opinion..........Sean REILLY875

  • KT4V what CPU BUS SPEED?

Can someone give me a mind check please.
I have a new 2800+ Barton XP CPU.
But I can not get the board to boot when I set the FSB in my bios.
I can only get the board to POST when the FSB is set to 133 MHZ.
Am I missing anything? Shouldnt I be able to get this 2800+ Barton XP to run?

The trouble you are having will probalbly be ur ram when i got my new cpu i didnt realise that 2100 isnt 333mhz 166fsb compatable!
2700 ram is 166 333 compatable or u can get some even better ram eg 3200 or 3500 depending on ur bios
Until u get ur new ram leave it on 133! once u get ur new stuff then go 166 fsb and ur problem shoulb b solved!
    Hope this helps!

  • Is their any way to test my CPU for damage or health status?

I just was wondering if their was a test for it. The apple hardware test doesn't test the processor.

If you were able to determine that your CPU was getting "weak or fragile," what would you do about it? You'd replace the logic board, which is exactly what you'd do if the CPU suddenly stopped functioning altogether. As long as your CPU is functioning normally as far as you can tell, there is nothing else to be done, and no point in knowing anything more about your CPU than Apple Hardware Test can tell you. You can obsess over this if you want to, but it will do you no good and will be a waste of your time and energy.

hmmz I don't know how to do that either, but sounds like an interesting tool you have there. It is quite difficult to calculate mem speeds on an AMD64 based system. Hope anyone knows how to post a file on this forum!

  • A Newb's Poor CPU Overclocking; RAM Timings?

    First, my system specs:
    Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 2.8GHz HTT w/ 800MHz FSB

    MSI 865PE Neo2-FIS2R motherboard (BIOS ver. 3.8)
    2x512MB Kingston PC3200 DDR SDRAM @ 400MHz
    Maxtor 6Y120M0 120GB HDD 7200RPM SATA150 8MB cache

    Enermax EG475P 470W PSU(+3.3V = 34A, +5V = 40A, +12V = 33A)
I've done quite a bit to my video card in the past few weeks:  replaced the stock ATI cooling with a VGA Silencer, flashed my Pro to XT status, and overclocked it mildly.
Just a few days ago I replaced the boxed CPU cooler with a Thermaltake Spark 7+ Xaser Edition A1715 CPU Cooler.  Here's where I ran into my first snag:  It didn't reduce my temperatures much.  At idle my Prescott 2.8 ran at 48 or 49C with the box cooler, and runs exactly the same under load.  However, with the stock cooler under load it would get all the way up to 69-71, whereas with this new cooler it only reaches 65-67.  Still not what I was expecting with this cooler though.
I decided to delve into a bit of CPU overclocking.  I increased the FSB 1MHz at a time, testing after each increase.
Except, I didn't get very far.  I was using Call of Duty multiplayer to test, and I get visual errors starting at 203MHz.  They're thin vertical white lines that flash for a second and then disappear.  Also jagged polygons strewn throughout the screen, usually white or a pale color.  When I clock back down to 202MHz, they disappear.
Using CPU-Z I get these values for my RAM modules:
    http://mywebpage.netscape.com/ISBop/cpuz1.JPG
In case that picture doesn't work, they are:
    FSB:DRAM = 1:1
    CAS Latency = 3.0 clocks
RAS to CAS = 3 clocks
    RAS Precharge = 3 clocks
    Cycle Time = 3 clocks
Bank Cycle Time, DRAM Idle Timer, Total CAS, and Row To Column are all blank and greyed out.
I know that increasing the FSB also increases the memory frequency, so basically I'm trying to figure out if these artifacts are caused by the CPU or the memory.  My CPU cooler has manual fan control and when the system is under load I run the fan at high speed, and the temperatures aren't getting that high, so it doesn't seem like the CPU is the problem.
I looked around for specific information about my RAM modules' overclocking abilities, but found little.  I found the datasheet for my memory here(PDF format).  I was thinking that maybe tightening the timings would enable me to push up my FSB higher.  202 as a limit is a little disappointing, to say the least.
My BIOS settings are as follows:
    Performance Mode = Turbo(MAT)
    DOT = Disabled
    CPU Ratio Selection = Locked
    DRAM Frequency = 400
    Spread Spectrum = Enabled
    CPU Bus Clock = 202
    DDR Clock = 404
    AGP/PCI Clock = 66.66/33.33
    CPU Voltage = 1.3875
    DDR Voltage = 2.60
    AGP Voltage = 1.65V
    System Readings:
    System Temperature = 35C
    Vcore:
    3.3V = 3.184 - 3.248
    5.0V = 5.088 - 5.167
    12.0V = 12.081 - 12.408

what does 202 do for you?  I mean I'm at 220.
    RE the software?
What drivers?  You mean graphics drivers?  Different drivers haven't made a difference in any game.  The artifacts appear once I clock to 203.
I don't know if I have the RAM set correctly.  I was posting here to find that out.
By card voltage I assume you mean AGP voltage.  Its at 2.65V.  Vcore is at the lowest setting, 1.3875.  I tried 1.4000 and 1.4150 but neither affected the overclocking ability either way.  Still produced artifacts at 203.
How did you get to 220?  What happened when you went higher than that?

  • G505s CPU at 96 degree idle? Please help! Non-stop overheating!

    Hello,
I have a Lenovo G505s. While idling the CPU temps run as high as 96 degrees, when I use the laptop cooler (which is practially always) temps stay at about 90. I use this laptop for gaming a lot and just todayI noticed a massive lag in everything I do. Internet isn't an issue, I've run all Lenovo Support scans and everything comes up "fine". Why is it constantly overheating? It literally begins overheating once I turn it on. Is my CPU permanently damaged now? This is a 6 month old laptop cleaned regularly with compressed air, well taken care of..
    Thanks in advance.

    hi noobtuber,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Heating issues are commonly caused by dirty fan or a dried out Thermal Interface Material (TIM). Since you keep the computer clean by using compressed air, the problem might be because of the latter (especially if there are no apps running on the background that's eating up the resources).
It's also possible that the heatsink is not properly conducting the heat that the APU is producing, causing the CPU to to throttle (which explains the massive lag that you're experiencing).
You can try to replace the stock Thermal Interface Material with a good quality TIM like Noctua NT-H1, Tuniq TX-4, or Artic Silver 5 and see if the temperature decreases or contact Lenovo for service.
    Regards

  • MSI K8T Neo broken - CPU broken as well?

About 10 days my system (see sig for details about my system) broke down. When I pressed the power button absolutely nothing happened. I first thought that the PSU is broken so I replaced it with an old 420W Super Flower PSU. When I tried to turn the system on the fans started but after about 0.5 seconds (or something like that...) they stopped and the system remained completly silent. Therefore no PSU problem (I also succesfully tested my Enermax PSU later with the Cooltek PSU tester). I used my old XP 1800+ system to test the graphic card and the RAM and those components seem to be undamaged. It seems that the mainboard is broken and I will send it back for replacement. But here comes my question:
I have no possibility to test my AMD 64 CPU. If I decide to send it back and it's not broken I need to pay for the testing. Furthermore I heard that it takes a very long time for AMD to test returned CPU's whereas the Mainboard replacement should not take much time. Is it likely or unlikely that the CPU is damaged? Should I send it back or keep it?
    Thanks for your opinions,
    Scipio

Can you try the old Superflower, with some old videocard and some old memory like PC-2100????
    See what happens....
As that old PSU wouldn't be able to power the current videocard....
Also, Enermax'ses can die just like any other part of the system

  • K9N SLI Platinum LED status "Processor is damaged"

    Hi everyone,
I made a search on this problem, but the posts I found did not help me this.
I just built a new system from scratch, and on first boot-up the system hangs and the LED status indicators 1-4 are all red. The manual says the CPU is damaged, which I don't really want to believe... I unboxed it last night with all the usual precautions, and I even took it out and put it back in again just to make sure, but it was fitted correctly the first time.
Now my question - can this be caused by any other component, or is the processor faulty for sure and I have to send it in?
    Thanks in advance!

Mwahahaha, never mind - after reviewing the manual once again, I realized I forgot to connect the JPW3 power connector that supplies the power to the CPU (found on page 2-8 of the manual).
Maybe this will help someone else anyway...

  • KT6 Delta cpu settings

might be having a blonde moment but i cant get it run @ the right speed.
    xp 2800 333 cpu
    1gb 2700 ddr crucial ram
    radon 9600 ati card
    400w psu
with cpu bus set on default 100 and rest on auto it runs @ 1.25 ghz
if i start to increase fsb it locks and i have to reset battery to get it to boot back into bios.
    any ideas
memory set on default spd settings

cpu temp is 51'c sys temp 41'c
    Quote
First of all you shouldn't increase fsb step by step but directly to 166Mhz, otherwise the other components become overclocked because of wrong divisor.
think thats sorted it doing it in stages 135 , 145 , 160 running @ 2ghz atm will go to 166 tomorrow
    set memory to 333
    so far so good  :D

  • Have I blown My M/B and CPU

    Hi There,
Ive got the K7N2 Delta-ILSR Motherboard with a 3200 xp 400 fsb and it looks to me like I've blown them both.
I was installing the Thermaltake Aquarius 3 Water cooling system, I took the fan off and put the water block on the CPU but when I powered up the system the cooloing unit didn't work and my pc booted for about 2 seconds then shut itself down. Is this long enough to bugger both the board and CPU?
The board diagnostics Lights say the CPU is damaged but when I try an old 3000xp, which I know works, in the board that doesn't work either. The system now powers up but the monitor doesn't fire up, I've tried resetting the Cmos and the Jumper to safe mode, but nothing. Any Ideas ?
    Thanks,
    Paul.

    check all cables.
    try another gfx card.
try with only 1 stick memory
set jumper j10 and j11 to safe mode and then clear cmos.
remove battery for atleast 10 mins while doing that to do a dep clear.

I have pc3200 DDR (listed below)
what can i get out of my rigg?
AND what the FREAK is fast TURBO and Ultra-TURBO!

Read through the FAQ by Maesus. It really does answer many of your questions.
Information on MAT(fast turbo etc...) Here.
Make sure you install the 2-256MB Ram on Dimm1&3 or 2&4 for dual-channel to be enabled. It may not work with that 512MB stick in there. Best would be to save up and get another stick of 512MB and sell the 256 er's. Lots of these boards won't boot with more than 2 sticks of Ram installed.
Set DDR voltage to at least 2.65v for stability on dual-channel.
Leave Dynamic OC disabled till you figure everything else out first.
See if you can get the dual-channel working well and Mat to at least "fast" setting.
Some of the other stickies on the main page would be good reading too.
Then if you have more specific questions come back here more info.

  • Type Lovers, is Font Book now fit for use?

When I installed 10.3 I was told Font Book wasn't a program written for graphic designers who use lots of fonts and keep them open often. So, I listened to the advice from some of the type gurus on these forums, got rid of lots of the fonts apple includes but I didn't need, etc., I bought Font Reserve and that has worked fine so far.
When I upgrade to Leopard, do I need to figure font management software into my budget ?
Any graphic designers out there with experience?...I mean I don't need thousands of fonts open at a time...but I do like to keep a healthy variety open and active...and what about programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign working with Font Book...do they play nice together?
    Thanks
    M

    Hi
Whomever told you this was talking nonsense. How well Font management applications perform depend to a large degree on the quality of the fonts you have. 1st and 2nd generation copies of your font library should work well with any font management application you may want to use, which includes Font Book. Certain applications can cope better with larger and more complex font lists than others. How much resources in terms of RAM, CPU/Bus Speeds as well as hard drive are all factors that need to be taken into account. For example I've successfully installed (using Font Book) nearly 1,800 fonts, however it took Quark about 30-40 minutes to load with all that information. On the other hand I've installed between 30-40 fonts (Using Suitcase this time) and it crashed Quark on launch. That's because one of the 30-40 fonts was damaged/corrupted.
Of all the font management systems that I have used the best one by far is Linotype FontExplorer X (as already mentioned)
    http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX
The best thing about it apart from it being FREE is its ability to clear out system and application font caches, something other font management systems don't do.
    Hope this helps, Tony
