CPU Cooler Recommendation

Hi,
I'm looking for recommendations for a decent CPU cooler. Price isn't really an issue.
I recently bought the ASUS Star Ice CPU cooler, couldn't get my MB to work and then broke the fan while fumbling around with it. So don't recommend that one, it maybe good but I don't like it anymore. I also want a CPU cooler that I just can connect to the MB connector and have SpeedFan control its fan, not some external knob etc. It also shouldn't be too heavy. A little above intel specs is OK but not too much.
Looking forward for recommendations.

The zalman sink is really quite beyond belief. Get this: at idle and moderate load it keeps my Northwood cool enough with the fan turned off. I found this out quite by accident one day when I noticed my idle temps were about five degrees higher than they ought to be. I figured something was running in the background and spent ten minutes trying to figure out what spyware or virus was secretly using my CPU cycles before I noticed that the CPU fan read 0 RPM. I'd accidentally pulled the wire out while working inside the case. I'm sure this would have fallen short had I pulled up anything really demanding, but I was pretty impressed The downside, however, is that the fan, even at full power, doesn't seem to take full advantage of the sink. I've been obsessed with lowering my temps lately, so I dug out an old p4 stock cooler, cannibalized it, and mounted the fan such that it blows across the sink, i.e. perpendicular to the sink fan such that it's blowing directly toward my exhaust fans.  I haven't stressed tested it yet, but my idle temps dropped by something ridiculous like six degrees. As in, my CPU now idles 2-3 degrees cooler than my case. Hence, it's pretty clear to me that the fan just isn't moving enough air to take advantage of the sink's thermal properties. And trust me when I say that the problem is not the amount of air moving through my case: the thing practically hovers. I'm not sure whether the zalman fan can be replaced (I intend to check the next time I have good reason to remove it); if so, mounting one of those 92 mm chop-your-finger-off thermalake (sp?) tornado fans on it would basically do the trick. I appreciate the quiet cooling concept, but I see every extra decibel as added time between me and the moment when something blows up

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] Zalman CPU cooler doesn't fit, Northbridge Sink remove?

    Hi,
I have a problem fitting a Zalman (CNPS7000B-Cu) cpu cooler - the MSI northbridge sink is too high and too close to the cpu.
Can I replace the NB sink with one with a lower profile?
( Incidently, I'm not overclocking, although I do use this machine as an audio machine and it does get quite hot.
    - If I can replace - any recommendations?
    - If not - any recommendations for a reasonably priced and quiet cooler that will fit (i.e with a narrow profile).

I had the same problem on my 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum Edition mobo. Zalman's website indicated that the CNPS7000a-AlCu fits on this board, but it doesn't. The diagonally placed northbridge heatsink is in the way. I originally thought I'd bend a few of the Zalman's fins out of the way, but then I decided if I could do something with the northbridge heatsink. I removed the northbridge heatsink and removed the 2 fins that were in the the way of the Zalman. I wanted to repalce the modded northbridge heatsink using some AS5 but the stock thermal goo (some pink stuff) was impossible to get off, even with alcohol or acetone. So I smeared some AS5 on anyway and just mooshed the heatsink back on with the pink junk and AS5.
I noticed that the northbridge gets really hot at stock speeds (200 FSB). I'm planning on overclocking my 2.4C to 3GHz (250 FSB) today, so I hope the northbridge doesn't burn up. Gonna aim a fan at it and hope for the best.
Hope the "bend 2 fins off the northbridge heatsink mod" helps all you guys that want to put Zalman's on your CPU's.

  • CPU cooler that works with K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI motherboard

I have read that some say the Zalman interferes on this board with the 1, and 2 ram slots, is this true?  I'm using the 3500 Winchester CPU.
Does someone have a part number if the Zalman is;   a)  the best, and  b) clears properly.
Also I see everyone talking about Artic Silver 5.  What does the"5" mean?  I have Artic Silver that I have been using for about 2 years, but there iis no designation "5".  Do I need the new stuff?
    Thanks

I don’t know muck about artic silver, but I have a comment on the cpu-cooler question.
I recently bought a K8N SLI Platinum, which has an almost identical layout as the Neo4 Platinum. I use a Termalright XP 120 cooler which according to there webpage does not fit on this board. But I didn’t had much problem at all! It is tight with the first ram slot thaw, and with a memory just a few millimetres higher than mine it wouldn’t fit (I use TwinMOS PC3200).
Unfortunately, I don’t know if it’s a similar situation with the Zalman coolers, but I really like to recommend the XP120 (or even XP80) anyway. It keeps my cpu (althorn 3000+) at almost the same temp as the sounding system, during normal use. And since you are free to put any fan you like, you have a very good start making your system really quiet.

  • H8-1214 cpu cooler upgrade

I'm trying to upgrade the cpu from fx-6100 to fx-8150 but i'm having a heck of a time finding a cpu cooler that will fit the angelica motherboard. what most people don't understand is that the angelica motherboard utilizes am3+ socket with intel cpu cooler mount. does anyone know or recommend a cpu cooler that will handle 125W cpu, fit the small space, not cause issues with mounting? I can already that tower coolers will not fit or work, due to most using push pins instead of screws because the cpu mount is screw in and most towers are tall.

    Hi,
If you search the forum you should find a post with a similar desire.  It's interesting to note that HP Partsurfer only shows one heat sink and it's rated for 95 watts.

What are you planning to do with it?
If you're not overclocking, then the standard cooler that comes with retail boxed CPU will be just fine.
i bought this CPU without retail box, so without cooler ,and i do want to overclock it in the future.

  • Aftermarket CPU cooler to fit P7N Diamond

Is there anyone who can recommend a good aftermarket CPU cooler that will fit on the new P7N Diamond?
    Best regards /Pär

    I'm sorry!
I missed to tell you what cpu I'm planing on using. Hopefully the new Intel Wolfdale: Core 2 Duo E8500 slightly overclocked.
I've read about the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme. Seems to be a very good cpu cooler.
Any recommendations on a good 120mm fan for it?
The goal is a not to loud computer..
    Any other recommendations....that will fit?

  • Cpu cooler with DKA790GX Platinum

Hello, planing on buying DKA790GX Platinum with a Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition, my question is about what cpu cooler fits the best on this board? Would a TRUE (Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme) fit or will it cover 2 or more memory slots? Or maybe someone can recommend a great cpu cooler for this motherboard. Thanks.
    // Gras

    This is what I use.
    http://tinyurl.com/amb8k5
    It's gotten good reviews
The thing points towards the back of the case (which i like cause I have a fan back there blowing air OUT the case) so without the fan it will not cover the memory. With the fan on it will barely be over the first memory. Though this isn't a problem unless you have some memory with some tall heat sink attached. I was able to move the memory from slots 3-4 to slots 1-2 without removing the fan and just sliding is up a little. Does use the same annoying (to me) wire fan holders like the Thermalright. Best to attach the thing before you put the motherboard in the case, Could be a pain in the a** otherwise depending on your case, (though I was able to do it with some pain and suffering).
Oh yes..i'm using the same CPU you plan to buy.

  • Aftermarket CPU cooler to fit P6N Diamond and my new build

Hi, after my motherboard finally quit a couple weeks ago, I am starting to build my new system.  I just purchased a P6N Diamond motherboard and I'll be picking up an E6700 Core 2 Duo and I already know that I am going to overclock slightly.
With the heat pipes this board has, I'm wondering if and if so, what aftermarket CPU cooler will fit on this board.  I'm not going for a major overclock, but I would like to see 3GHz per core or slightly higher.
Also, Does anyone know what speed of RAM I should get to bump this processor up to 3GHz?  On my last setup, I used DDR 434 and ran it at speed to get the processor up from 3.0C to 3.24GHz and 3.4E to 3.67GHz (upgraded at one point).  I am still not sure on what RAM I should use yet for compatibility issues, but I guess I need to figure out the speed first.
I also just ordered my video card today as well.  I went with a EVGA eGeforce 8800GTX Superclocked card.  Later on down the road when the price comes down, I'll pick up another to run SLI.  From what I read on MSI's website, SLI (with the P6N Plat) doesn't support SLI in Vista... Is this true with the board, or will it be a driver/BIOS issue that can be fixed later?
The computer this is replacing is my HTPC.  I used and will again use this thing for just about everything.  I regularly watch movies, record/watch TV, listen to music, play games, etc.  I have it hooked up to a 40" flat panel LCD HDTV and have loved running and HTPC since I bought the TV in December.  Hopefully this next system lives up to what I'm hoping it will be.

The GeminII cooler may not fit. But the Tuniq is also too heavy IMO.
I would pick this; it has good clearance and is one of the best coolers on the market. Except for this obviously.
But it's all down to personal preference.
I really like the Thermalright SI-128 SE that you recommended.  My last Thermalright was able to cool my 3.4E @ 3.7GHz processor down when my old Zalman could not.  Do you know if this will fit?  I'm not sure the larger Thermalright will fit in my case...
Another option I was thinking about is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019

Compaq Presario SR5710F with AMD Athlon X2 4450e dual core micro-processor - after the desktop has been on for a little while, I can hear the cpu cooling fan switch to a higher speed. Any suggestions?

    Hello DTCothren,
You state whenever your CPU fan goes to a higher speed the computer locks up, is that corret? I will try to assist you with this issue.
I would recommend you open up the hardware diagnostic tool on your computer, and run a full system test. This test does take some time so just allow it to run. If you not sure how to locate the program have a look at this document.

  • Error with new CPU cooler

Hello, I just put a Vantec Aeroflow AMD into my MSI K7T 266 pro2-u mboard and upno startup I get an error relating to unabling to detect CPU spinning. However it is spinning and temp was 34C. I have noticed that the three colours of wires are "yello, black and red" whereas on defauly CPU cooler it was  " Blue, Black red." Is it just a case of incompatibility as I now have disabled CPU fan detection. Thanks.

Had the same problem with same m/b and cooler. Long story short, purchased a seperate T.M.D fan rated at 5600rpm part no PD1270155B-2F and fitted to cooler and bios detected it at 5600rpm. The 5600 rpm fan was slightly noiser than the fan fitted to the vantec cooler I bought and it was gold coloured not silver. Whats also strange was cpu temp dropped from 41C to 37.5C. This raises a question that maybe the coolers are packaged with 4300rpm fans instead of 5600rpm ,the specs say 5600rpm fan but who knows. Have bought 3 vantec coolers and all three have no fan detection. Bought 3 5600rpm fans and all have fan detection. Hand held tacho rated the silver ones about 4250rpm and the gold ones at 5560rpm. Figure this one out ?(

  • Help me find a cpu cooler please.

    Hi everyone,
Im having some difficulty finding a decent cpu cooler for my box,
atm im using the boxed cooler from AMD modded with a 80mm papst fan,
it runs pretty quite, but the temps aren't that good.
Ive tried adding some more fans in the kabinnet, but then it makes more noise, which is unpractical.
There are so many brands and types of cpu coolers, and since im really not following with the hardware developent anymore
im really at lost with this, so i hope some of you gurus can help me out.

  • "I have an HP Pavillion computer & want 2 put in a quiet CPU cooler. Which one fits that's quietest?

I'm looking to do some home audio recording and need a quiet fan in the computer. The guys at Best Buy had me buy a Corsair A50, but the fitting wasn't correct for the Pavillion (not sure if 'fitting' is the correct word - I'm talking about where the CPU cooler sits). In addition, the A50 was too tall for the Pavillion's box. Any help would be appreciated.

The reason your OS is invalid is because it is tied to the motherboard in your stolen computer. The HP OEM Windows OS requires information in HP motherboard to cause the OS to activate. This is the way the OEM licenses works. The only proper way to correct this issue is to purchase a new copy of Windows.

  • CPU cooler

    Hello,
In order to overclock more my system I'm searching a great CPU cooler.
In my other pc ( Athlon XP with nforce2) I have a thermaltake Volcano 7+ that goes very well.
So I'm am tempted to buy Thermaltake spark 6+ cooler ( with the plus of an easy integration with the hardcano front panel of my Xaser III lanfire case).
But I 'm opened at other solutions so I ask you an advice.
Which is the better cooler (non idraulic or TEC) for you?
I have seen also same ZALMAN interesting cooler in a shop but I can 't find a site in which are shown detailed specs. Do you know where I can find more infos?
    Thanks

how well does it fit on the motherboard? u havent/didnt have any problems with the hsf touching the psu or anything? im seriously thinkin of gettin a 947U but last i looked inside my case there didnt seem to be that much free space between the stock intel cooler and my psu..  i think theres about 2.5 - 2.75 cm there atm.

  • CPU Cooler- which one ???

    Hi,
i have been planning on OCing my CPU and i am just wondering what CPU Cooler to go for as i have seen a fair few that seem pretty good like the Zalman 7000B CU, TT Vensus 12, or perhaps one of the swiftech HSF's the only problem is that i dont really want to change the baseplate as i hear it is very hard to get off, so ideally i would like a HSF that will fit into my exisitng baseplate and also cool my CPU better than the stock HSF. Also my exisiting HSF had a thermal pad that has now melted between it and the CPU would i need to remove the compund off the CPU before installing the new HSF or could i use the same or apply some AS5 to top it up.
I have also been considering a water cooling kit for my CPU and possibly my GPU, how easy are these to fit? i dont want to make any modifications to the MOBO in anyway such as dirlling holes, can anyone recommed a kit that is easy to install?

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum - CPU Cooler?

Hi there, this is my first post to the forum and hope that someone can help
Bascially I've just purchased a MSI K8N Neo Platinum mobo to use with an AMD 64 2800.
I'm wondering if I should use the stock CPU cooler or look to purchasing a cooler such as a Zalman? I want to keep the computer as quiet as possible.
I've recently read that it would be better to use the Cool and Quiet option with the stock CPU cooler instead?

    Chris,
If you don't mind a used one, there are probably about a hundred thousand available ones from people in these forums who has upgraded their heatsinks, and that's about everyone
The problem is, we dont want to give them up. We bought the retail package with fan not because of the free heatsink/fan, but because of the 3 year warranty that you only get with said combo.  To invoke the warranty, we'd have to return everything, including the heatsink/fan, so we hang on to it and let it collect dust.
So, for an aftermarket fan. If you don't plan to overclock, ever, the thermaltake silent boost K8 will do, although it is nowhere NEAR the 21dB that tt claims. They are known for shall we say, exaggerated claims. But it's certainly quieter than the stock HSF, and it's available everywhere.
Note that the "silent boost k8" is different from the "silent boost". The latter is for socket 462 I think.
