Cpu cooler with DKA790GX Platinum

Hello, planing on buying DKA790GX Platinum with a Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition, my question is about what cpu cooler fits the best on this board? Would a TRUE (Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme) fit or will it cover 2 or more memory slots? Or maybe someone can recommend a great cpu cooler for this motherboard. Thanks.

This is what I use.

It's gotten good reviews
The thing points towards the back of the case (which i like cause I have a fan back there blowing air OUT the case) so without the fan it will not cover the memory. With the fan on it will barely be over the first memory. Though this isn't a problem unless you have some memory with some tall heat sink attached. I was able to move the memory from slots 3-4 to slots 1-2 without removing the fan and just sliding is up a little. Does use the same annoying (to me) wire fan holders like the Thermalright. Best to attach the thing before you put the motherboard in the case, Could be a pain in the a** otherwise depending on your case, (though I was able to do it with some pain and suffering).
Oh yes..i'm using the same CPU you plan to buy.

  • S3 Sleep Issue with DKA790GX Platinum

Upon waking from S3 sleep, my cpu fan and rear case fan run 300rpm's slower than before the system goes into sleep mode and they never recover speed.  The front case fan returns to normal speed.  I am seeing the speed difference in Speedfan as well as HWMonitor and can hear the difference as well.  I have the case fan set to 75 percent in Bios and the CPU fan at 75 percent with speed-up starting at 40c.  This works properly on normal start-up, but not from S3 sleep.  Has anyone heard of a fix for this?  I have flashed to the 1.60 BIOS as MSI seemed to be working on ACPI fixes in the last two releases, but the issue is still present.  At one point I suspected Speedfan and did a restore back to before Speedfan was installed, but that was not the problem.  I have re-installed Vista in the past week as I was tracking down a problem where I couldn't get into S3 sleep at all.  That turned out to be AMD Overdrive 2.1.4 changing something in Vista that stopped it from sleeping in S1 or S3.  The machine enters and exits sleep great every time now with Overdrive eliminated except for the fan issue.

The fans stay slowed down until system restart.  Your right that there's really no harm done and the system never gets that hot with them slower.  I just hate it when things don't function right and the curiosity factor always gets me.  I have tried running stock speeds and no difference.  The reason I was thinking it might be a BIOS issue is that the one fan that isn't controlled by the BIOS returns to normal speed after sleep.  It sounds like I need to start removing programs, again.

  • Problems after BIOS update on DKA790GX Platinum

    Hi,
I have set up a pc with the DKA790GX Platinum (MS7550). The config:
    - Phenom 8750
    - Silverstone 400W PSU (fanless)
    - 2x2GB Crucial PC5300
    - Pioneer Blu-ray
    - Seagate Momentus 5400.4
    (this is a HTPC setup...)
The pc started up fine and I installed the OS. I had the board connected to my monitor through HDMI.
After updating the BIOS the board went all black on me. I tried connecting a floppy-drive to recover to a older BIOS-version, but could get the board to do that. I then tried different monitor-connections, but nothing.
I then installed a Gigabyte Radeon HD 4870 1GB-board I had laying here, and board seems to boot somehow - all graphics are messed so I can't read whats on the screen, but at least I get some kind of image. A little unsure on how the PSU handle that videoboard.
Anyone know if the 1.2 BIOS-update maybe is set to <swearing removed> the integrated video by looking for a videoboard in the system? Have a Asus 9800GT Matrix-board in a another pc here - maybe I remove that and try it in the new pc, but... argh..
This ain't funny at all anymore. I had a P45 Platinum dying during a BIOS upgrade. I had a P45 Diamond that dosn't want to boot anymore, and now this... MSI-motherboards really don't want to be friends with me at the time  :-|

Hi have exactly teh same problem,
On Dec/2008 I have set up a PC with DKA790GX Platinum (MS7550 ver 1.2), Phenom 9750, 1 120GB hd, 4 MB corsair xms2 ddr2 800mhz, psu 500w. I installed the win xp pro OS. I had the board connected to my monitor vga. After updating the BIOS (with live update utility) the board went all black on me (the fan, PSU, hd starts normal). I test the PSU, HD and the memory, but the problem still continue.
Two days after, the PC start normal, but I don't know what was the problem.
Aleatory when try to start the PC, sometimes I get exactly the same problem, but, Yesterday, I try again to work with me PC and now i have the same problem.
What can i do to fix this problem?

  • Installing a New CPU Cooler

Is the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120 mm PWM Fan compatible with the Dell XPS 435 desktop mother board.

If it has a four-pin connector like the XPS 8500, it should accept a standard cooling solution.
I installed a Cooler Master Vortex in my XPS 8500. It has worked very well.

  • CPU cooler that works with K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI motherboard

I have read that some say the Zalman interferes on this board with the 1, and 2 ram slots, is this true?  I'm using the 3500 Winchester CPU.
Does someone have a part number if the Zalman is;   a)  the best, and  b) clears properly.
Also I see everyone talking about Artic Silver 5.  What does the"5" mean?  I have Artic Silver that I have been using for about 2 years, but there iis no designation "5".  Do I need the new stuff?
    Thanks

I don’t know muck about artic silver, but I have a comment on the cpu-cooler question.
I recently bought a K8N SLI Platinum, which has an almost identical layout as the Neo4 Platinum. I use a Termalright XP 120 cooler which according to there webpage does not fit on this board. But I didn’t had much problem at all! It is tight with the first ram slot thaw, and with a memory just a few millimetres higher than mine it wouldn’t fit (I use TwinMOS PC3200).
Unfortunately, I don’t know if it’s a similar situation with the Zalman coolers, but I really like to recommend the XP120 (or even XP80) anyway. It keeps my cpu (althorn 3000+) at almost the same temp as the sounding system, during normal use. And since you are free to put any fan you like, you have a very good start making your system really quiet.

  • MSI K8N Neo Platinum - CPU Cooler?

Hi there, this is my first post to the forum and hope that someone can help
Bascially I've just purchased a MSI K8N Neo Platinum mobo to use with an AMD 64 2800.
I'm wondering if I should use the stock CPU cooler or look to purchasing a cooler such as a Zalman? I want to keep the computer as quiet as possible.
I've recently read that it would be better to use the Cool and Quiet option with the stock CPU cooler instead?

    Chris,
If you don't mind a used one, there are probably about a hundred thousand available ones from people in these forums who has upgraded their heatsinks, and that's about everyone
The problem is, we dont want to give them up. We bought the retail package with fan not because of the free heatsink/fan, but because of the 3 year warranty that you only get with said combo.  To invoke the warranty, we'd have to return everything, including the heatsink/fan, so we hang on to it and let it collect dust.
So, for an aftermarket fan. If you don't plan to overclock, ever, the thermaltake silent boost K8 will do, although it is nowhere NEAR the 21dB that tt claims. They are known for shall we say, exaggerated claims. But it's certainly quieter than the stock HSF, and it's available everywhere.
Note that the "silent boost k8" is different from the "silent boost". The latter is for socket 462 I think.

  • MSI DKA790GX Platinum and AM3 CPU - BIOS Update

    Hi,
I am going to upgrade my current computer from an older AMD socket 939 setup to an AMD Phenom II based system
I am thinking of the MSI DKA790GX Platinum motherboard and AMD Phenom II X3 720 (Black edition) CPU (AM2+ Motherboard and AM3 CPU), but I need to clear up the BIOS update for AM3 issue before buying the components.
The motherboard advertisement states that the BIOS has to be upgraded to support AM3 CPU
My issue is this: I do not have an AM2/AM2+ CPU, and I am looking to jump right into buying an AM3 CPU - so will the unit power-up/POST with the combination of the newer AM3 CPU and older BIOS to allow me to update the BIOS using either FDD or Bootable USB Pen in a DOS environment?
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this? Any help on this would be appreciated
    Thanks

The 1.74 Bios is one I got from MSI tech support.  We're trying to work through a problem with my new board. nothing major, but we're not quite there yet.
I know that Nvidia was The chipset to have for several years, but I think AMD has upset that applecart a bit with the 780 & now 790 chipsets, and with Intel
getting into the chipset game as well, Nvidia could see some rough times ahead.  They may even end up dropping out of the chipset game, since Intel's new CPUs have the memory controller built on die.  Hence, Intel has no real need for NVidia any more, Nvidia may end up just focusing on the video card market, unless?
My board defaults to 800mhz as well and I'm running a 720. You have to keep in mind that they have to make the boards default to the lowest common denominator as not everyone runs 1066 capable memory on their board (even though Manufacturers may spec the memory so). I also have to manually bump up the voltage, as well as timings and ratio for 1066.  But, my Mushkin ram plugged in and booted with no problems, but I did have to bump up the voltage and tighten up the timings even at 800.
Interesting (Abut BIOS version 1.74). I guess it is not yet available for downloads.
So now Intel CPU's have the memory controller on the die (just like AMD). So does this prove as an advantageous concept? I expect Intel to implement better memory management than AMD. AMD drops speed when all 4 memory banks are occupied... what is the use of utilizing max RAM capability if memory controller cannot sustain the max RAM speed?
I may agree with you on the concept that motherboard should support the lowest (RAM) denominator...
However if someone uses lower than 1066 MHz sticks, system should detect accordingly, and when 1066 sticks are used, auto-detect as 1066... I still do not see the issue here. On former nVidia based boards like my MSI K9A Platinum SLI (with an AMD X2 CPU), 800 MHz modules are detected as 800 on auto, no need to manually tweak anything in BIOS. I still have to see an nVidia EPP profile enabled board which is claimed to auto detect 1066 MHz capable memory sticks by default.
On my system it is also the same... I have to up the RAM voltage to 2.2V (otherwise system is not stable), as well as setting up the timings and of course the RAM/FSB speed ratio to 1:2.66.
I am running currently 4 chips of OCZ platinum 2 GHZ (for a total of 8 GB RAM, for 64 bit Vista and Linux). Also with mine (as we know Phenom II does not support 4 sticks of 1066 MHz) it drops to 800 MHz. As well as, I needed to bump the voltage to 2.2 V... otherwise in the middle of operation, system reboots. We know what this is about, dont we ?

  • Cooler compatibility with Neo2 Platinum

    Hello,
Would anyone know if the Thermaltake Mini Typhoon CPU Cooler, CL-P0268, is compatible with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard? Isn't it too heavy for that mobo?
Also, would anyone recommend Zalman CNPS 9500 led for the same mobo?
    Any other recommendation?
    Thank you in advance,
    Jose

Go for the Zalman, its much better than the Mini Typhoon. It will cause no problems with your motherboard.

  • Error with new CPU cooler

Hello, I just put a Vantec Aeroflow AMD into my MSI K7T 266 pro2-u mboard and upno startup I get an error relating to unabling to detect CPU spinning. However it is spinning and temp was 34C. I have noticed that the three colours of wires are "yello, black and red" whereas on defauly CPU cooler it was  " Blue, Black red." Is it just a case of incompatibility as I now have disabled CPU fan detection. Thanks.

Had the same problem with same m/b and cooler. Long story short, purchased a seperate T.M.D fan rated at 5600rpm part no PD1270155B-2F and fitted to cooler and bios detected it at 5600rpm. The 5600 rpm fan was slightly noiser than the fan fitted to the vantec cooler I bought and it was gold coloured not silver. Whats also strange was cpu temp dropped from 41C to 37.5C. This raises a question that maybe the coolers are packaged with 4300rpm fans instead of 5600rpm ,the specs say 5600rpm fan but who knows. Have bought 3 vantec coolers and all three have no fan detection. Bought 3 5600rpm fans and all have fan detection. Hand held tacho rated the silver ones about 4250rpm and the gold ones at 5560rpm. Figure this one out ?(

  • My MSI KT3-ULTRA2 doesn't work with my CPU cooler!!

My MSI KT3-ULTRA2 doesn't work with my CPU cooler!!
I've got an MSI KT3-ULTRA2 mainbord, and I have a NEOLEC VENEZIA TB Cooler. But when I attach my NEOLEC cooler and I start the machine, the machine shuts down within a couple of seconds, and I get nothing to see on my screen. The weird thing is when I turn the PC on, the cooler starts rotating so it can't be broke, but then the pc shuts down i a couple of secs. So pleezze anybody help me!!
The weird thing is that I also have a coolermaster cooler, and that one works fine. But the problem is that this coolermaster is designed for AMD XP 1900+, and I ahve an AMD XP 2200+ that's why I bought the Neolec Venezia TB cooler.

one easy thing to watch for... see if the heatsink or fan is in contact with any part of the motherboard, like... if it is too big and touches something that normally wouldn't be in contact with a fan or heatsink.  If so, it could be shorting it.

  • Oddity with Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler

Bought COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO RR-212E-20PK-R2 Continuous Direct Contact 120mm Sleeve CPU Cooler Compatible with latest Int… Aug 2014 and no previous problems that I know of...
UNTIL... computer was off this morning... when I pushed power on, stopped at a CPU fan warning screen and command to press F1 for setup
Did so, and screen said fan was at less than the require 600 RPM (something like 592) until after a few seconds, fan went above 600 rpm and boot up proceeded
Have had CPUID HWMonitor running in the background all day, and fan is running at 612-655 rpm, currently 625
No odd noises to indicate a fan problem with this 4 month old unit
Anyone else ever had this happen with this brand/model cooler?

  • List of Compatible CPU Cooling Fans with my MSI X48C Motherboard

Just wondering if there is a list of compatible CPU Cooling Fans/Heatsinks that go with the MSI X48C MOBO. I am using a Q9550. Ones that I am considering:
Cooler Master Hyper N520 CPU Cooler
    Zalman 9700[NT]
    Thermaltake SpinQ CPU Cooler
Also, if you know of any others that would be good, feel free to add your opinion!
    Thanks for the help!

I am personally partial to Thermalright products for cpu cooling. I use nothing else. Copper ones tend to be much heavier than non-copper ones and can actually over time put undue stress on the board around the cpu socket. Besides, I havent seen enough of a difference in temps when using copper versus non-copper to warrant about getting a copper one. Heres one from thermalright I like.....
    http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/cpu/si-128_se/product_cpu_cooler_si128se.html
For the fan, get a Thermaltake silent cat 120. Killer combo.

    3. I have a Zalman CNPS 9700 LED, very nice fan btw. Shoulden this fan be controled by the CPU automaticly ? i do have a
fan regulator in the end of the wire outside the cabinet. I have it on the bag side of the computer case so i can turn it op and
down. But i think i read someware that it could be controled automaticly. Is that right ?
And what about the 3 and 4 pins CPU fan slots on the board. Right now i cant remember in witch of the 3 or 4 slot i installed

    Listen. Forgot to say.
I'm still a little little bit concerned about 40c-41c idle. but but.
    Relax, it's quite alright...
    Quote
But what i was trying to say is. I have 3 running SATA drives also and only the stock (Normal) 120 fan that came with the Antec case.
1 fan, the Zalman 9700LED and the PSU fan ofcause. and then OC at 300FSB. Could that be why i'm at 40c idle ?
All the drives + only 1 fan in the case ? i mean. I'm not shure the standard 120 fan that came with the Antec case is good enough.
    Any sugestions ?
My case has three 120mm case fan in addition to the 120mm power supply and the Zalman fan, five of them altogether. The Antec P180 case has separate compartment for the hard drives and the power supply, which made a big difference from the temperature's perspective. The box also has four hard drives and I do not OC; I did try, but I didn't see much of a difference and shut it off.

btw. what is a good stress test apps to test my cpu temp with on max load ?
The Orthos Stress Prime is pretty good and so is Intel's TAT; the link I've posted earlier has more information.
