Cpu fan is running at -1 rpm!!

h, i've been facing slight problems with my mac that it overheats sometimes, so after some research i found out that i can download a program called fan control where i basically can control the speed of my fans. then i found out that my cpu fan is running at -1 rpm, the desired rpm is 300, my other fans (hd and dvd) are running at the desired rpm, i'm not sure if i should be worried!!! i mean do i have to replace it!? and if so where and how!!!?? btw i've just got this laptop used, it's a 15" late 2008 with the highest configueration.

Resetting the SMC was my first thought, but you have done that. You might also try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
After that if the issue persists, I would call AppleCare.

  • CPU Fan is always at 5000+ RPM!!!

So I did an upgrade today. I now have a P4 3.0E (prescott) processor, an MSI 865PE Neo2-PFS (Platinum Edition), 1GB of DDR400 RAM, and a new pci-firewire card
The minute I hooked this sucker up everything worked, but the cpu fan is always at 5000+ RPM (as reported in the bios pc health monitor). I thought the motherboard lowered the cpu rpm depending on the temperature, but apparently it's CoreCenter. I use linux and obviously cannot install CoreCenter. Is there any other way I can get my fan to lower it's speed? maybe an equivalent linux software that does the job?

I Agree With Mr. Moleman, as with all of the Heat related Issues that have been Plaguing the Prescott, I would NOT Be Supprised if it is Written into the Latest Precott Microcode in the BIOS, to Run the Stock INTEL Thermal Solution at 100% Speed.................Sean REILLY875

  • Post serviced IMac and the fan is running at top RPM.

I had my IMac serviced doe to the HDD dieing. When I got it back, the HDD fan is running at max RPM. I've tried to reset the PRAM (7 times, over and over) and tried to reload the SMC patch and no luck. Apple Store is over 2 hours away so I'd like to save 8 hours on the road by figuring our if there is anything else that I can try to fix this.
C2Duo IMac with Tiger and the 'fans played on' from the moment I got it back and started restoring the data.
    Any ideas?
Also, a new AppleCare agreement talks about 'onsite service'. Do they actually do onsite service? Does one have to request it? It wasn't offered when I called in after finding the fan issue.
    Thanks!!!

So, I called AppleCare and they walked me through an 'SMC reset' routine and now SMCFANCONTROL doesn't run AND all the fans sounds like they are running at full speed.
I got a call that they want to swap my system rather than have me wait for a new sensor. I wonder what issues I might have with a 'refurb' system.
There is another issue, there is a smear of some kind of glue on the screen from the service experience.
It's been interesting dealing with their support...
I can't stand the whine of the fans and now am back on Windows for most things. Yippee...

  • Why is my fan always running at 5500 rpm?

My MacBook Pro is about 6 months old and suddenly over the last 2-3 days the fans are always running around 5500 rpm. The CPU heat is around 190 Farenheit with the fans running like this.  It's sitting on my desk with nothing but the desk underneath.  Are there any solutions to this issue?
    Thanks

Okay - Dang this was a pain to figure out!
Macbook Pro 15" 8gb 2.2ghz running 10.6.8. After many of hours and dead-end solutions on these "help" boards I finally figured out whay my fans were always running at full tilt, even when NO programs were running. Ready for the answer, wait for it.... my HP deskjet printer!!!!!! If I leave the USB connection plugged in the fans run a 5500rpm + even at idle! Unplug the usb to the printer - fans settle to uner 2000rpm. I did find a string that said look at my printer que for active lists - but to no avail.
I have had this laptop to the mac repair for this problem (of course they coulnd' simulate it there) and done all the dang SMC resets, system installs, etc told to do on these boards - AND NO, it is not "normal" for the fans to run like this!
Hope it helps someone out there who has been pulling out their hair with this one!

  • My Macbook's Fan Constantly Runs at 5600+ RPM

have noticed that for the past few days, my fan was running all the time, and very loudly from the time I turn it on, until I turn it off. I got istat pro and saw that my fan was running at 5500-6000 rpm all the time. Can anybody tell me whats going on?

Yes, do a reset and if you are running something like Parallels. It does use a lot of CPU cycles which heats things up. Open up your activity monitor to see how much CPU percent you are using when the fan is running high. It will also tell you what programs are using it too.

  • Fans always running at 6000 RPM.

I have had this problem since my friend gave me his old macbook pro. The fans are very loud and running very fast. First I thought dust might be stuck inside but I checked and nothing was there. Nevertheless I cleaned it. When I powered on my macbook it was still very loud so I checked with SMCFanControl and it was still running at 6000 RPM. I have tried resetting PRAM and the SMC without any success. Also software like SMCFanControl and iCyclone won't let me change the speed even though the CPU is at 40C most of the time. I don't really want to take it for repair at the apple store because they will probably charge me a fortune. It is a MacBook Pro Late 2006 model. Thank You.

Same situation here - the only update: it started to happen after I replaced the palmrest, screen assembly and installed SSD Intel X25M drive. First, at startup fans are quiet, and then slowly going to higher speeds. Since I did upgrade everything at the same time I did not catch what was the source of this issue. First I blaimed SSD since it's not getting any warmer (as oppose to standard SATA drive) and that might have confused the Mac's fan control. The other thought was the SSDs have a different SMART reporting method... Well, all kinds of resets (SMC and PRAM) did not help, neither utilities like smcFan Control and others. BTW, smcFan control shows temps from 35C-37C and 5200-5500 RPM. Fans are blowing a cool air, no signs of overheating at all.
    Bad temp sensors?
    Any thoughts?

  • ISSUES W/BLACK SCREEN CPU/FANS STILL RUNNING!

My i7 is from batch week 46 and so far ive had problems with BLACK OUT screen but CPU/fans are still running. All i can do at that point is just press and hold down power button to shut down CPU. When i start it back up, its as if nothing happened. This has happened to me twice now and only had it for couple weeks. Received my i7 on the 26th of NOV/09! Can anyone help me come up with a solution?

Your profile reports you are running OS X 10.6.1. Would you check to see if you are running 10.6.2?

  • CPU Fan - constantly runs at high speed

Just like the title says, my CPU fan is constantly at a high speed. It's loud and I haven't been able to figure out how to set it back to normal. It's a Dell Optiplex GX620. I swapped the power supply, re-imaged the hard drive, and flashed the BIOS to the latest version from dell's website. I looked through all the BIOS settings and logs and didn't find anything. I've asked every IT I know, and gone through a million forums with no real explainations or ideas to this issue. So far the best advice I've got is to turn it off. My theory is if I find the driver that controls the CPU fan and update it, the system won't see the CPU as overheating and it will return to normal. I'm close to just replacing the motherboard but thought I'd post something first. Anybody have an answer?

    Go to www.AMD.com or
www.VGA.com and post your problem in the forum that best fits your problem or start a post of your own. Be a lot more detailed then you are here about all the equipment it will be very important when trying to diagnose. Do not throw out your mother
board and stop replacing parts your waisting loot. when you go into the the AMD web site and post under the proper forum You are going to hopefully run into one of three people Gr33nGecko, SteveO_Crossfire or Black Zion these three people
are experts in there field and have forgotten more than most people know. If stevo responds to you he will have a website posted in blue  near the bottom of his post or ask him to show you his system you might want to be sitting when you see the unit
for his house. I could run a good size town on the darn thing and wait to you see the cooling tower on top. Iv'e seen smaller units on power plants lol. Just joking but the darn cooling tower is still huge . I know Gr33 is in several forums as a
supermoderator and has over 17,000 post listed that I am aware of. Well good luck and dont give up.
I know of several reasons your unit maybe overheating but I think you would be better off with anyone of these three techs. and it would be good if you had a second computer/laptop near you. When I am working with them I use a lap top that way I can
do voltage checks or whatever and I am responding with questions and answers without delay and I am not blowing up my computer or myself to answer or check a problem that would normally require me to shut down my problem computer and still be able to
    talk with the guys.
    Good luck

  • CPU Fan going crazy (over 3500 rpm) all the time iMac 24"

    Hello,
I have had an iMac 24" since Aug 2009. I had no problem until up a month ago (coincidentally after I installed Mountain Lion).
The CPU fan becomes very noisy, reaching 3500 rpm and more. I checked and the CPU temperature is around 90C when this happens.
It happens invariably after very little usage of the computer. Sometimes it's when I'm watching a DVD, sometimes is when I'm copying files from a USB hard drive, sometimes I'm just surfing the web.
I have brought my computer to the Apple Store twice already. The first time they told me I should reinstall the OS from scratch, after erasing the disk (which I did), the second time they told me they had found the problem and fixed it, for free! but it presented itself as soon as I turned it on back home.
The CPU temperature is around 80C right now, and I only have safari opened and I haven't reinstalled any program since I reinstalled the OS.
Do you have any idea of what it could be? Could it be that the sensor is detecting a wrong temperature? In this case, could I set the fan speed manually? I know it is not advisable, but the people from the apple store are not helping
Thanks for any help you could give me,
    Biagio

Please start by doing a SMC Reset,
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    If necessary repeat process.

  • Z77a-g43 cpu fan constantly runs at max speed

I have a Noctua dh14 (without a pwm connector). My old 870a motherboard had a setting which let me pick if the cpu fan should be controlled by voltage or pwm, but I can't seem to find it on my new z77a motherboard. Is there anything I can do about this aside from connecting the fan to some sort of external controller?
I can see the motherboard changing the fans PWM value in hwmonitor, but the rpm remains the same.
Edit: I was able to do it by switching to the system fan connector instead of the cpu fan connector
It would still be nice to know how to adjust the fan speed on the cpu fan connector though.

Quote from: Henry on 19-May-12, 08:00:09
Put a 4 wire PWM fan on it.
That or connect it to an aftermarket fan controller or a system fan header like was done.

Run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test that you'll find on one of the DVDs that were shipped with your MBP. I expect AHT will report a SNS error, indicating that one of the temperature sensors in your machine has failed. When a temp sensor fails, the fan or fans usually run at top speed all the time as a precaution, in case the machine is overheating but the bad sensor is failing to report it.

  • Compaq C700 - CPU fan not running after waking up from Sleep mode

    Hi guys,
Waking up from Sleep mode does not start the CPU fan.
    Kernel:  2.6.32-ARCH
    KDE : 4.4
Let me know what other details you need.

I was having the same problem after installing mountain lion.
What i did was in Finder went to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/  and deleted all the networking plists (refer screen shot). Then restarted the Mac and in Network Preferences reconnected to my WLAN.
    That solved the problem.

  • Why do both fans always run at 6000 RPM

I have a 17" MB Pro which spins both fans at 6k ALL the time (when it's on), even though the machine is not running hot.
They go off properly when it's in sleep mode, but after wakeup or restart the fan speed will start out slow (and inaudible), then slowly increase until after a minute or so both are running at max speed.
CPU heatsink temps are in the 93 - 95 degree (F) range.
I have reset SMC, deleted com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file, same behavior.
Any thoughts on this? The noise is getting to me.......

I have just begun to have the same problem as of last night, also with a 17" MBP. I spent time on the phone with an AppleCare rep, but the fans stopped on their own after a reboot into Windows and then back into Mac OSX. As of right now, they've started again.
As in the case of the first poster, my computer is not running hot, nor is any process taking up a lot of CPU cycles. This is really perturbing me.

  • Hard Drive fan suddenly running at 6000 rpm

Hi, I have a 2009 20" iMac, 2.66GHz Intel Core Due running 10.5.8. I have iStats Pro and SmcFanControl installed.
Randomly, my HD fan goes from 1099 to 6000. I can fix it by putting my Mac to sleep, wait for 10 seconds, and then proceed, The HD fan speed goes from 6000 down to 1099 and it will stay there. Sometimes this hapens a second or 3rd time. Every time I put the machine to sleep. And every time it "fixes" it. After 3 to 4 times going to sleep, the problem weems to be permanently solved and the "vacuum cleaner" does NOT turn on anymore. Obviously, this is highly annoying and not a solution.
Is there any real solution to this problem? I bought this machine in July 2009, no Apple Care because I have had luck with Apple products in general (my iMac DV from 1999 still runs...). It seems as if my luck has run out.
I scoured the boards but nobody seems to really know what is going on. I read about temp sensors and logic boards. Seems dramatic to me. Is this something I can fix myself?
Has Apple recognized this as a real problem??? Because it IS! I am very disappointed. You do not expect this from a newer machine.
    Thanks for your help.

First off smcFanControl is not going to fix the problem, it can only run the fans faster and not slower than the iMac's System Management Controller is telling them to run.
It sounds as if you have either 1 of 3 problems:
    1. you need to reset the iMac's SMC.
    2. the Hard Drive is actually over heating for some reason.
    3. you have a faulty HD temperature sensor or bad connection (wire) between the sensor and logic-board.
    I would do the following:
    1. disable or uninstall smcFancontrol
    2. reset the iMac's System Management Controller
    as per >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    4. Release the power button.
    5. Attach the computers power cable.
    6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    3. then if and when the HD fan acts up (ramps to 6000rpm) run the extended Apple Hardware Test
    as per > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
    4. use the iStat Pro widget to check the sensor readings for the Hard Drive and Hard Drive bay when it acts up.
