CPU frequency at idle and low load
I have a 1.83 GHz Macbook and it seems that my frequency is at 1500 Mhz most of the time according to the CoreDuoTemp whether I run the Macbook on AC or battery. Does it only go to max only when running processor intensive apps or should it stay at 1833 Mhz when idle? Thanks for the input.
Core duo should take about 10 to 15 seconds to read your temp, no longer.
I have the same problem on my 2.0 Ghz Macbook. I am always at 1500 I have never once gone below 1333 and even that was for just a few seconds once.
I am wondering if this is how Apple "fixed" at least to a small degree, the whine in these over that in the Pro's. I was hoping to find a program that would force the proc down for better batter life (such programs exist for PC's so I think the same should be possible for OSX)

Does the iphone cpu frequency change when the cpu load is different?
Does the iphone cpu frequency change when the cpu load is different, or it does not change, stay a fixed frequency? if it changes, how can i get the realtime cpu frequency?if anyone knows, please tell me, thank you so much!!!
As a general, historical statement Tonefox is correct. For certain particular cpus woodmeister is correct. Cpus have historically been single frequency units, though over-clocking has been done for several years. Doing so pushes the cpu beyond its guaranteed speed, but has tended to work since most cpus from quality vendors will actually operate at higher speeds. The manufacturer just does not guarantee the results...remember the Pentium fiasco in the early years of that chip? Today manufacturers are ceertifying particular product lines for over-clocking on a periodic basis. And that is what dynamic clocking really is, over-clocking but not at a constant clock speed as has been done in the past.
Much of the silicon on the market will function at higher clock rates, the only question is does the maker guarantee the accuracy and performance at those clock rates. -
Cpu frequency scaling not working and hdd powers down
Hi,
I recently made a fresh reinstall on my laptop keeping only my user settings (home directory) but no system-wide settings (/etc).
Now I have the following issues:
1) CPU frequency scaling does not work. KDE's PowerDevil tells me, my CPU does not have scaling capability and when I try to start cpufreq, I get this error message:
# /etc/rc.d/cpufreq start
:: Setting cpufreq governing rules , cpu 0 1Error setting new values. Common errors: [BUSY] - Do you have proper administration rights? (super-user?)ble_governors: No such file or directory
- Is the governor you requested available and modprobed?
- Trying to set an invalid policy?
- Trying to set a specific frequency, but userspace governor is not available,
for example because of hardware which cannot be set to a specific frequency
or because the userspace governor isn't loaded?
The governor modules are loaded:
# lsmod | grep cpufreq
cpufreq_userspace 2096 0
cpufreq_powersave 942 0
cpufreq_ondemand 7990 0
freq_table 2339 1 cpufreq_ondemand
cpufreq_conservative 9172 0
This used to work out-of-the box with the previous install so I'm a bit puzzled.
2) My hard drive powers down after a few seconds of inactivity, just to power up a few seconds later when it's accessed again. The hard drive never powered down on my previous installation. I do not have any power management daemons running and this behavior starts right after booting the machine, before I log in.
I would like to disable this "feature" since I think it's rather bad for the hard drive's health as well as battery life.
Any ideas?:)
EDIT: Cpu frequency scaling is fixed now, forgot to load the acpi_cpufreq module. There's still the issue with the hard drive, though.
Last edited by Vortex375 (2010-06-28 14:54:27)The HDD thing is caused by upowerd, dunno why though.
You can try: hdparm -B 254 <disk device>, but that wont solve the problem permanently, only till you plug and unplug again the AC supply.
you can also try killing upowerd and things will (at least that was the case for me) be alright.
Maybe this is upowerd bug?

CPU frequency does not down-clock when idle, Power waste or is this OK?
I was browsing through the BSD sysctl's of OSX 10.6.2 today and noticed something I thought odd. Looking this up on different searches produced no useful results so I thought I'd ask here.
It seems that the MacBook late 2006 Core2Duo T7200 model has no cpu speed scaling. As far as I can tell, looking in the 'sysctl' output gave me these results:
sysctl -a |grep freq
hw.busfrequency = 664000000
hw.cpufrequency = 2000000000
hw.tbfrequency = 1000000000
hw.busfrequency: 664000000
hw.busfrequency_min: 664000000
hw.busfrequency_max: 664000000
hw.cpufrequency: 2000000000
hw.cpufrequency_min: 2000000000
hw.cpufrequency_max: 2000000000
hw.tbfrequency: 1000000000
What this shows, CPU frequency maximum minimum are both 2 GHz, bus max and min are also 664mhz. These should be able to change I would think.
(The "tbfrequency" value I believe is timer speed; 1gigahertz assures smooth media playback and interactivity. This is not the issue)
I was under the impression that Core 2 Duo's were supposed to have "SpeedStep", to make the cpu run slower to draw less power and generate less heat. On my desktop, this definitely works and I have measured it with my Kill-A-Watt meter. I would think the same happens with all cpus, so I wonder: In my macbook, is the lack of slowing down the CPU using more power than necessary?
(edited to add more detail)I'm sure it's slightly less efficient. However, any CPU will still use a lot less power when there's less of a load (as you can see by running CPU-intensive tasks and watching the battery drain compared to when nothing is open).

When I try to load a PDF inside Iframe and I disable toolar=0 (as guided by adobe). I am able to see the iframe with PDF with no toolbar in IE and lower versions of Firefox (till version 14).
But in my current version 29, The PDF is visible with toolbar on top.
Can you please let me know the way to display pdf with no toolbar in Firefox 29?I replied on your similar question here: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1005225

So with latest updates Firefox became as shitty as Google Chrome and other browsers made by marketers instead of programmers.
Everyday I see crashes, lags, freezes. If I open more than 5 tabs - lags with flash-video guaranteed. If I open large pages (9Gag) - there's a big chance of "black screening" of all the tabs until restart.
Why previous versions worked fine? In the same hardware.
Here's screenshot of taskmanager while Firefox doing that "blackscreening":
http://i.imgur.com/ufobuct.png
Why do I have to restart my browser each 30 minutes to prevent that bugs? Why my CPU and HDD loaded as hell by fckng browser when I can't even use this browser?
What a hell are you doing there, developers?I thought it will be attached automatically when I installed addon for this and saw "attach something" button.

Hello,
I want to now the max. cable length that the Differential TTL signals can run in both at high and low frequencies. That is very dependant on the type of cable, its construction, and inherent impedance and capacitance. This may be of use:

CPU goes idle and then comes back..why?
During stress testing we ran 100 concurrent logons and then logoffs with the first 84 user completing this test run in 20 - 30 seconds. During this time both Portal ap1 and ap2 hit 100% utilization on the servers. After the 20 - 30 seconds the portal aps CPU goes idle and the
remaining 16 users out of the 100 hit a 120 second delay before there request returns processing the test and completes. During this 120 sec delay I see the aps CPU go idles until the 120 sec time expires.
What is causing this 120 sec delay?Hello Vaibhav,
sorry I have no answer to your question. I want to know what tool you are using to do the stress test. We go live in one week with our EP for CRM and I really want to know if the performance is enough for 120 Users.

P6NGM-L and CPU frequency confusion
Hello all,
Me again. with more questions about my P6NGM-L, BIOS V3.6. These are different questions than in my other topic, so I thought it best to start a new topic.
Anyway, I've just had my E6300 upgraded to an E8500 and it's working fine. However, while both CPU-z and my mobo's BIOS show that it's an E8500 @ 3166Mhz, they also show that the 'current cpu frequency' is hovering around 2000Mhz. I would understand this if I'd had the EIST enabled, but I hadn't at the time (I have now enabled it).
So can anyone tell me what's going on?
Also, while I was looking in the downloaded manual for the mobo to see if it had any info on this, I noticed that it says (somewhere, though I can't find it now. ) 'this board supports overclocking' although of course they don't make any guarantees (Why should they?). I was hoping to overclock my 3.166GHz cpu to 3.33 GHz, but I can't change the Bus speed or the Multiplier. Currently '333MHz and x6' in CPUID and in the BIOS the multiplier is 'x7'.
So is it possible to change any of these things so that I can run the CPU as if it's an E8600, or slightly better?
Any help anyone could give would be much appreciated. Thanks for the replies Nichrome and XFM.
Nichrome,
I hadn't touched the BIOS for anything to do with the CPU until I enabled the Enhanced Speedstep setting, and before then the BIOS was showing the cpu as 3.16Ghz but showing the frequency as 2000Mhz, after enabling EIST, the BIOS shows both a CPU of 3.16Ghz and a frequency of 3.16Ghz!?
I can't find any way of overclocking the CPU, unless I have to mess about with the memory timings first?
XFM,
I've looked at the link you were good enough to post. I've done the 'My Computer - Properties' thing and it does show two separate speeds. I'm just wondering why my BIOS now (the last time I looked, anyway) didn't show two separate speeds.
I'm sure either this pc or my next one will send me mental. -
Is it normal for 10-20% cpu to be used when idle and watching activity monitor?
Is it normal for 10-20% cpu to be used when idle and watching activity monitor?
I have a macbook 6,1, 4gb of ram, and my os seems to be spinning the rainbow quite often and laggy. I watch my activity monitor and it never drops below 90% cpu available. Is this normal? if not what can I do to clean up my os. Does anyone have any resources or help? ThanksHello:
Answer - no.
The activity monitor should indicate what is consuming the processor when your system is idle.
I just looked at my own system with Safari running and the usage is about 3%.

How to Define Specific CPU Frequency in Laptop Mode Tools?
I would like to know how to set a specific maximum and minimum frequency for Laptop Mode Tools. Here is my /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/cpufreq.conf:
# Configuration file for Laptop Mode Tools module cpufreq.
# For more information, consult the laptop-mode.conf(8) manual page.
# CPU frequency scaling and throttling
#__COMMENT Laptop mode tools can automatically adjust your kernel CPU frequency
#__COMMENT settings. This includes upper and lower limits and scaling governors.
#__COMMENT There is also support for CPU throttling, on systems that don't support
#__COMMENT frequency scaling.
#__COMMENT
#__COMMENT This feature only works on 2.6 kernels.
#__COMMENT
#__COMMENT
#__COMMENT IMPORTANT: In versions 1.36 and earlier, these settings were included in the
#__COMMENT main laptop-mode.conf configuration file. If they are still present, they
#__COMMENT overrule the settings in this file. To fix this, simply delete the settings
#__COMMENT from the main config file.

I have a new Intel Haswell CPU, so I know that CPU throttling isn't applicable to me. In the section about scaling, how do I set a specific GHz or MHz value for the minimum and maximum CPU?
ThanksNo, I just want to save battery power. I don't want the CPU to be clocked as high when I'm on battery. I would set the CPUFreq governor to ondemand, but when I issue sudo cpupower frequency-set -g ondemand, I get:
Setting cpu: 0
Error setting new values. Common errors:
- Do you have proper administration rights? (super-user?)
- Is the governor you requested available and modprobed?
- Trying to set an invalid policy?
- Trying to set a specific frequency, but userspace governor is not available,
for example because of hardware which cannot be set to a specific frequency
or because the userspace governor isn't loaded?
The output of ls /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/cpufreq/ is:
acpi-cpufreq.ko.gz cpufreq_stats.ko.gz powernow-k8.ko.gz
amd_freq_sensitivity.ko.gz cpufreq_userspace.ko.gz speedstep-lib.ko.gz
cpufreq_conservative.ko.gz p4-clockmod.ko.gz
cpufreq_powersave.ko.gz pcc-cpufreq.ko.gz
Doing modprobe cpufreq_ondemand and trying again does nothing.
So, since I can't use the ondemand governor and then raise the threshold, I need to limit the CPU frequency.
Thanks. -

At first sight, this does seem contradictory - but there are two or three reasonable interpretations, and you'll have to check the AWR report for the period to decide which is more appropriate:
Option a) Oracle is consuming 9% of the host CPU - perhaps there's something else going on that's consuming the other 91%. There is a section in the AWR that can confirm this:

-------------------------------------------These times are in hundredths of seconds (usually) - we can check busy_time and idle time to see if the CPU is 100% used despite Oracle only using 9%. (Also check the other CPU figures that relate specifically to Oracle).
Option b) You are only using 9% of the CPU, but ADDM can see that (for some processes or statements perhaps) that elapsed time = CPU time, and wants to give the message that there is an opportunity for improving these statements by tuning. (Given the comments about wait times being affected by CPU usage, though, I doubt if this is the case).
Option c) There was a least one version of Oracle where some of the critical timings were reported in milliseconds rather than hundredths. This resulted in some silly conclusions when the ADDM could see SOME figures which were actually out by a factor of 10. Possibly one piece of arithmetic is showing 90% but the report you're looking at is showing 9% because of this code error. (Again, you have to cross-check the O/S CPU statistics with the Oracle CPU stats to check this theory).

Minor cosmetic change to eliminate horizonatl scroll -
Hi,
I have an i7-4700MQ laptop with a cpu frequency range of 800mhz to 2.4ghz (3.4ghz with turbo).
When using kernel 3.12 it would stay at 2.4ghz, but after the update to 3.14 it would clock down to 800mhz.
Now since the release of 3.15 it seems that it will never go down to 800mhz again, even if left idle for a long time.
Is this a known issue? is there something i need to do?
It does fluctuate down to about 1.3ghz for very short periods but i havent seen it go lower.
i can force it down to lower frequencies by changing
/sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/max_perf_pct
but that is a bit of a hack and not exactly dynamic.
any advice would be welcome.
Thanks. As graysky said, it's the latter. Quoting myself from the thread I linked to:
Ondemand was doing unnecessary work, it's not needed to scale the freq all the time, because it's the C-states that power saving comes from. So the "my CPU is always at max freq" thing is indeed not an issue. The CPU is *not* at the max freq all the time, it's only at the shown freq in the C0 state. And on a working system, the C0 state will be used less than 1% of the time.
If you want to do some tests, add intel_pstate=disable to the kernel commandline, so that the acpi_cpufreq governor will be used instead of intel_pstate. Then use turbostat (it's in AUR) to compare how the CPU behaves with each of them. -
K8NGM2-FID CPU core voltage Fluctuations and instabilities-- Bad caps!!?
I Have K8NGM2-FID bought 6 months ago and started having stability issues since last month.
Here is my configuration
K8NGM2-FID ver 2.0 Bios 3.73 now, used to be 3.5, experimented both, but did not help
Onboard video, Onboard Lan, firewire
Memory : 512 x 2 Corsair DDR400 in dual channel mode at 2.65v 64MB to Video
CPU: AMD64 X2 3800+
HDD WD 160GB SATA150
Winfast TV2000 Expert Tv Tuner
Drivers, tried many version ( currently using latest Nvidia Video, MB drivers)
Now, the description of the problem.
System suddenly hangs with or without load, intermittenly. Nothing to do what we are working on. Even when System is idle.
Hangs means, it could happend two ways,
1. simply it would not respond, screen simply freezes,
2. sometimes, you simply see horizantal lines on monitor( Typically happens when cpu core voltage drops below it can handle). I know this because
I am using RMClock on my Turion laptop, and when we try to find lowest stable voltage we see this behaviour.
Now, some other observation, from the day one CPU core voltage has been fluctuating a lot. Used to fluctuate anywhere between 1.37v to 1.304v( at default 1.35v). But still has been stable. Ran 24hour prime95, so no problems.
Recently I am seeing voltage fluctuations is more, as low as 1.28v to 1.39v at default 1.35v, so I tried RMCLock and raised the voltage to 1.4v, but it seems that did not help much.
Now, As per the MSI PCALert4 voltage is changing anywhere from 1.28v to 1.38v, but also I get core voltage field empty( that is right no CPU core voltage shown) and alarm sounds. It seems, CPU does not get voltage at all and gets very low voltage for a second or so.
Things I tried, Changed the powersupply, changed the Memory, but no use. I am lucky enough to have exact same configuration I built for a friend. So, I checked voltages on his PC and I do not see this behaviour.
Now, I ran out of options.... any idea anyone had similar problem, and if they solved?
Now, here are PCAlert 4 images
http://img171.imageshack.us/my.php?image=128vatdef135sp5.jpg
http://img256.imageshack.us/my.php?image=novoltageif5.jpg
http://img406.imageshack.us/my.php?image=132vredbi3.jpg
Also, another weird behaviour with Bios, even when I change setting in bios, they did not take effect, even loading default does not help, so I have to press CMOS reset button.
Any help will be appreciated.
ThanksThanks for the quick reply.
First to clarify, these things has been developed a monrh ago only. It has been fine for more than 5 months.
1). Yes Memory is insalled in closest DIMM sockets to CPU,
2). I think you mean mem voltage. The memory I have is Corsair Value series and it even runs fine DDR400 at 2.55v, but I bumped it to 2.65v and also tried 2.75v ( 2.65v is typical I have been using with this MB).
3). Memory has been tested with Memtest for 24 hours and ran Dual Prime95 for 24 hours when system is assembled.
Also swapped from another PC I built for my friend with same components( same corsair value series memory) Also tested my memory on his PC, no probs. BTW I also tested my memory at 333, freezing even happens even at that speed.
4). PSU has nothing to do, because I have been monitoring all PSU rails with SPeedFan none of of the rail voltages moved at all. I even monitored with Digital Multimeter to ensure. Anyways I even tried 3 psus, one ANtec 350W smart power supply, ThemalTake 420W, Ultra 400 Watts. All have more than enough juice to power this setup. (onboard Graphics card).
5). Yes, freezing happens in simply desktop too. Nothing to do with CPU load or graphics load. It could happen even when just idling.
6). I use stock CPU cooler in Antec 1650B case with 120MM Fan running in the back( approx 50cfm) and CPU temp never exceeded 47c and MB temp typically around 28c and NB temp around 50-60c using a digital probe and 55-70c using Nvidia Monitor based on load vs no load.
7). As per Dual core patches, I applied AMD Dual Core optimizer quite a while ago. As per the MS Patch, No I have not applied( But I doubt it helps because it has been stable without that for all these months). I may try that.
Now, what I am trying, I disabled CNQ, and logging Core voltage fluctuation with speedfan( no monitoring).
as of yesterday night the core voltage was varying from 1.28v to 1.39v( I think that is insane 110mv fluctuation in CPU core voltage!!?) at default CPU voltage of 1.35v. BTW it has nothing to with CPU load, all these logs generated when it was idle. I remember fluctuation even when MB was new, but lowest I observed was 1.304v.
SOmehow, I suspect VRM is pretty bad on this MB.
Anyways, see the response and let me know if you think I am missing somethings. Appreciate your help.

High CPU usage on idle server.
Hi
I have a problem with a weblogic server 5.1 SP#6 running with JDK1.2.2 on a Solaris Sparc server.
The server starts using about 80-90 % of the cpu after about 2 hours (even if it is idle). After two
days the server hungs completely and needs to be restarted.
During this time the server gets longer and longer response time.
At the bottom of this post, i added a thread dump when the server had about 85% CPU usage and low
usage.
Gratefull for any help.
