CPU/GPU Panic Causes daily unexpected shutdowns 10.8.4
Almost daily while I am reading e-mails on my Airmail application or going through my RSS on Newsbar, my computer unexpectedly shuts down and restarts giving me a long error report. Please see below.
I have reinstalled my OS then only brought over my files folder by folder from a external drive (not Time Machine). Then reinstalled only the apps I use frequently, but the problem persists. My 3 year Apple Care ran out yesterday, though when I call about this issue, they just tell me to reinstall the OS.
Can anyone help?

Do you have a 15" mid-2010 MacBook Pro? If so...
Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bringing the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.
Good luck,
Clinton

Protecting NTFS against unexpected shutdowns
Hello. I work for a company that has more than 300 retail stores through my country. Those stores have a local Windows 2008 server running SQL Server 2008 for some local processing. All servers are Dell R220 and R210 II.
Problem is that some of those places have unreliable power supply. Even with UPS sometimes servers turn off and file system is corrupted. Last week we had a case of an unexpected shutdown which corrupted the registry files. Its rare but it happens and when
it happens the store can't function properly.
We've solved this problem on the Linux PoS by using the "data=journal" parameter for the file system. This parameter makes the file system to commit all data and metadata into the journal before writing into the main file system. I'm not a file
system engineer but we've tested and the PoS file systems seems pretty much immune to corruption caused by unexpected shutdown. It makes the system a bit slow but we don't care.
Is there something like that for NTFS? I've searched about it and read some documentation online but it seems to be no way to tune NTFS to become more resistant against corruption.
Many thanks.Hi,
Yes, as it keep the write buffer in the memory for a period of time, like 72H. When the server restart it finish the write buffer :) Less risk to corrupt that way (so yes it's OS independant, but always depend on the ondoard controller)
For the brand I seen that in HP mostly, for the Dell it depend what the system builder configured the system with. It's usually a clip module that you can plug into the motherboard to make the upgrade. It's a memory kit usually, that you can plug a battery
on it.
Look like that ; we can see the memory upgrade kit with the battery that directly plug into the motherboard :)

10.9.3 Upgrade - Causes GPU Panic Attacks
Since the upgrade on May 17 2014, my MAC Book Pro has been crashing constently. It has crashed in many applications and in many scenarios. It is not hardware related given that my MAC has been nothing but stable until the upgrade. I have read that 4K support for monitors was introduced as part of this release and since I my laptop going into a state GPU Panic, it only seems to make sense that it is related to an OSX bug. Can someone please advise on what to do.
Thanks.

Hi can someone help me? iPhoto was causing me issues, always crashing so I updated to OS X and then reinstalled iPhoto but it still crashes. Rebuilt the database too. Here's what it says...

SBS 2011 VM regular unexpected shutdowns, unable to find cause.
Hi,
I have an SBS 2011 virtual machine running on ESXi 5.5 / HP DL380 G7. This particular VM is reporting unexpected shutdowns at regular intervals, at first it happened once or twice every few months but in the last few weeks it has started happening every
2 days between 1am and 2am.
There are other VM's on this server that are not effected.
The event logs don't report anything suspicious until after the unexpected shutdown when I get the unexpected shutdown errors.
Steps I have taken so far to isolate the issue are as follows.
1. update the firmware on the HP server.
2. update ESXi from 5.1 to 5.5
Unfortunately these steps have made no difference. Any idea on what might be causing the SBS 2011 VM and not the others to have this problem? It runs a rather large exchange database and all these unexpected shutdowns are a cause for concern.
Regards,
PMThanks for the suggestions,
AV updates take place between 7pm and 11pm at hourly intervals (previously hourly all day)
We use Shadowprotect for our backups and an incremental backup it taken on an hourly basis between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, a full backup takes place on a Saturday afternoon.
I've gone through the system logs and tried to compare what's happening at the time of the crash on the days it did/didn't happen and have noted the differences below.
Between 1:00am and 1:30am on a day the server didn't crash there are GroupPolicy Event ID 1500's in the System logs and not much else.
on the days ( this morning ) it did crash there are those same 1500's as well as some Service Control Manager Event ID 7036's in the System logs immediately after a group policy update of 7 objects. The 7036's are as follows.
30/03/2015 1:05:05 AM Service Control Manager
7036 The Portable Device Enumerator Service service entered the running state.
30/03/2015 1:05:06 AM Service Control Manager
7036 The Windows Defender service entered the running state.
30/03/2015 1:05:07 AM Service Control Manager
7036 The Windows Defender service entered the stopped state.
30/03/2015 1:07:05 AM Service Control Manager
7036 The Portable Device Enumerator Service service entered the stopped state.
There are then some more 1500's until 1:25am then at 1:28am I get Event ID 12 The operating system started at system time 2015-03-29T14:58:12.109999300Z
The application logs seem more promising, see the screenshots below. First where the server didn't crash and second where it did. (crash was at ~1:26am)

I have since removed the certificate 805XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
I have not yet removed certificate 114XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
as I get the following error in EMS
The internal transport certificate cannot be removed because that would cause the Microsoft Exchange Transport service
to stop. To replace the internal transport certificate, create a new certificate. The new certificate will automaticall
y become the internal transport certificate. You can then remove the existing certificate.
+ CategoryInfo : InvalidArgument: (:) [Remove-ExchangeCertificate], InvalidOperationException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : 787BD31B,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.SystemConfigurationTasks.RemoveExchangeCertificate
I have not yet followed up on this, and I'm unsure if it's related.
There is no unusual performance issues or memory use, there is 76.6GB free on this VM.

Unexpected shutdowns / high GPU diode temperatures / new RAM?
Hi there, all. First time posting on the discussion forum.
My problem started earlier. I ordered some additional RAM for the new World of Warcraft expansion and put it in today. Here's the RAM in question, from the place I got it from:
http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?imodule=CT25664AC667
I used their locator tool, input my computer (24" iMac, 2.33ghz, late 2007), and that's what it gave me. Just to be safe I cross-checked it with the RAM specs necessary that I found here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423
As far as I could tell, this all checked out. I ordered the RAM and installed it today with little effort. I did notice that the levers for popping out/securing the RAM were a little hard to move. It seemed like they were an awfully tight fit, and sometimes were touching the sodimms as they moved in and out. Nevertheless everything fit in and clicked. I removed one of the 1gb sodimms I had by default and installed my new 2gb sodimm, for a total of 3gb.
After that I rebooted and checked system profiler. It registered 3gb of memory and said both modules were working OK. I checked iStat Pro and it also showed 3gb of memory. I noticed a pretty substantial performance increase in WoW, which is what I was looking for, so I assumed everything was fine. I played WoW all day, from about 12:00 noon to midnight off and on. No problems.
Around midnight, my computer shut down. No warning at all. I thought it was a power outage of some kind; either a cord was loose, my power strip was out, etc. That's how sudden and weird it was. I checked my cords, unplugged the power, plugged it back in, and rebooted.
About 5 minutes later, it happened again. I repeated this 3-4 times. Each time I booted up, checked to make sure the RAM was working properly, fired up WoW, and it would crap out very shortly afterward.
After a few repeats of this I started looking at my temperatures in iStat Pro. I noticed that the GPU Diode was significantly higher than the others - in the 170 degrees Fahrenheit / 70 degrees Celsius range. I watched them closely as I rebooted, and I figured out that as soon as the GPU Diode temperature got into the 170f/70c range my computer would die instantly.
Did some research on these forums and elsewhere, and discovered reports of a pretty widespread issue of GPUs overheating on the Intel iMacs, with an identical response: instant shutdown at a critical temperature.
The computer geek in me says that this is a problem with the RAM. However, system profiler and iStat Pro all say the RAM is functioning properly. And if the problem does have to do with the GPU, as the temperatures seem to indicate, is that connected to the RAM?
Anyway. I unplugged my system and reseated the RAM just to be sure everything was fitted properly. I think that one of the sodimms may have been loose. I made double sure everything clicked into place this time, and as of this writing WoW has been running for 35 minutes with no hitches. The GPU Diode temperature went as high as 190f/90c, but my computer didn't shut down. Now the GPU Diode has calmed down to a more reasonable 160f/70c, and it's hovering there.
Anybody have any input? The problem has gone away for the moment, but my temperatures are still pretty high and I'm a little nervous. Should I take it in to the Apple store? I have Applecare, so it certainly wouldn't hurt.Hi arco311
It does sound like you may have dislodged the remaining 1GB module or not fully seated the new 2GB module. If you have any more issues that seem to be ram related, reinstall the ram pushing real hard on each of the modules with both thumbs and then close the ejector clips.
There are three fans in the Intel iMac (CPU/GPU, HD and Optical Drive) and you may want to experiment with smcFanControl 2.1.3. Then run up only the CPU/GPU fan speed a couple hundred RPM to see if that helps to keep the GPU down in the 160 to 170 range.

if the bug exists in Apple’s code, then there’s nothing that can be done about it but to wait for an update from Apple. Given the loaded kernel extensions shown in the crash report, the only things which you could affect are VirtualBox and FUSE for OS X. Since you have the latest version of VirtualBox installed, and I haven’t seen similar GPU panics reported involving that version of VirtualBox, that led me to suggest experimenting with FUSE for OS X first. Since it’s a GPU panic, you could try disabling VirtualBox if you think that it’s more likely to be the cause than FUSE for OS X. -
GPU Panic with Thunderbolt Display after upgrading to 10.9.3
Hi everybody! I have a MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012 and use it with a Thunderbolt Display 27". After upgrading to 10.9.3, a GPU Panic error started annoying me. All displays (thunderbolt and mac) go black and I have to hold down the power button to force the shutdown and then power on.
Sometimes, I connect the display and it works for some days. Sometimes, it crashes just when I connect the thunderbolt display. It's just not what we expect from such premium product.
I've read the posts similar to this, did a PRAM reset, etc, but none of this worked for me. Any ideas?
This is the last crash log I had today. Please anybody help me! Thanks.

SOLVED: K9A2 Platinuim= Unexpected shutdowns on medium load.
Hello guys!
This is my first message, I'm from argentina, and I regret this first is a cry for help.
I've unexpected shutdowns on my system, (specs on the signature), and it happens when I use heavy open GL apps, like SecondLife (at maximum quality settings), Quake 4 (idem).
It works wonderfully for a while and then BANG! shutdown, so so down, I've to actully turn off the PSU switch and then on again to be able to boot.
At first I thought it was a temperature issue, but no, my system rarely go more than 50C even with the CPU at it's very full capacity (try a render on blender) for a long time.
This is also strange, because I can have my CPU at 100% on each core for 5 hours and everything's peachy, BUT I play Quake 4 and 30 minutes or so later the computer shuts down.
I read in the forum it could be also a weak PSU, and according to my numbers mine is extremely weak, so that explanation could be consistent with the demand of extra power the GPU needs on games.
I visit the Nvidia forum and the only post remotely similar to my problem talks about the mother (k9a2).
So the question is: Besides the obvious need of a better PSU... do I need to check something else?
Oh!! one additional fact: playing games my Graphics board never climb to more than 60C
Yes it's hot, but the default threshold for slowing the GPU down is 100C so I guess it's ok.
Any ideas?
Thank you very much in advance and excuse my crappy english
Edit: Issue solved see below."So the question is: Besides the obvious need of a better PSU... do I need to check something else?"
No, its the PSU for sure
"Any ideas?"
Go for normal, modern and better PSU

Mid-2012 retina macbook pro nvidia gpu panics
I bought my mid-2012 retina macbook pro in September 2012. It is 8 months out of warranty. I always look after it and use it carefully. Since 2 weeks ago, I encountered the problems below,
1.turn into black screen after running for about 15 mins, but the system is still running because the keyboard is still functional. After reboot, i record the log as below, it shows that it is a GPU Panic.
2. display would not turn on after pressing the power button but can still hear the apple start up chime and the system keep running with the screen
off.
3. after erased the hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. Under a new installed system, it can run normally for about 1 day, after that especially after a shut down or restart, the problems above came back.
I am currently working in Thailand but I have no plan to go back to the US in a short period of time. I brought the laptop to the local apple service, they said it is certainly the logic board or GPU failure and the parts need to be replaced. The cost of the replacement is around half of the price that I paid for this laptop. I feel really disappointed so I called apple telephone service if there is anything that they can help. However, instead of helping me allocate the cause of these problems, the suggestion I received is to buy a new Mac Book and accept the fact that I am just unlucky in this case. This is the first time in my life to encounter mother board or GPU failure excluding artificial damage, they are supposed to be reliable espeically under the name of Apple. It is just so hard for me to accept it.
Below is the system message of the problem, it would be much appreciated if anyone can give me some suggestion that can help me to fix my problem at the lowest cost. Thank you very much.

I can't use my multiple monitors when using just the integrated graphics card, but it's allowed me to limp along until I have time to get into an Apple Store.

Constant GPU panics with a twist
Hello all
I have been having a difficult issue that it seems apple has trouble fixing and so has everyone Ive talked to as well.
After upgrading to Maverick from snow leopard I have started get GPU panics at a rate of 1 or 2 a week when I had none before the upgrade. I do have a 2010 MBP 15in which I had checked for the TS4088 error after the first 2 panics. My machine tested good and passed the VST test or atleast that is what I asked to have run at the store. Now I gave them the fact of the matter as the first 2 panic seemed to happen in the same application(garrys mod), but now there is no pattern in applications(mail, quicktime, vlc, firefox, word, Premiere). I have also been having the computer go black recently with no luck getting to wake up as if its forced to sleep but doesnt respond to any commands to wake it back up but also doesnt cause an offical crash report to show up.
Now I have reset the SMC/PRAM and updated everything on the system and run a HDD smart test and memory test which all passed. Now I know the logitech driver doesnt cause the crash as i dont have it installed on my windows/bootcamp side and I get the equivelent of a gpu panic as the kernal crashes on the nvidia card when its active and nothing fixes that as well.
Now i have seen using the gfxCardStatus should fix my issue but I need to use my nvida card for video editing and shot rendering so i cant be stuck on the internal. I have also exceeded the 3 year lenght as I was trying to see if i could fix my laptop before handing it over as I cant be without a laptop as they are required for my classes and job at college and since it passed the VST the genius said I would have to pay for the more detailed inspection by the backroom techs; otherwise he couldnt do much more for me. This hasnt been my first logic board failure either I had the first go out the first year when the USB bus gave out from what im guessing was some surge caused by my power brick shorting out internally and almost catching fire.
Here is my most recent crash log this is the exact same message ive been getting for each crash.

So is it possible to past the VST but still have a bad GPU?Kernel panics cannot be directly triggered by user applications. It's almost always a hardware problem or a bug in a kernel driver.
The most likely problem is that you've got some bad RAM. The other less likely problem would be a video card driver bug, but I don't see anything like that in your panic log. -

Someone may tell you that the panic is caused by Sophos. It isn't, but Sophos is useless and you should remove it anyway. -
GPU overheat causing system crash
My T61 was resuscitated a couple months ago following a major beverage spill that completely killed it. The shop disassembled it, cleaned it thoroughly, reassembled it, and now it works fine, except for one problem.
When I do something that involves video (e.g. Youtubes or playing a DVD movie), the system is likely to shut down completely. I'll hear a soft click, the screen goes black, all the LED indicators go black -- completely dead. Pressing the power button does nothing. In order to revive the machine, I have to remove the battery and unplug the AC power. Then when I plug the battery back in, the LEDs come back on, and pressing the power button starts the machine back up. As long as I don't play any videos, everything is back to normal.
I've been through this cycle now maybe 50 times; it doesn't seem to get any worse or better over time.
I installed GPU-Z, and turned on logging, then deliberately caused the shutdown by playing videos. The shutdown seems to happen consistently when the GPU temperature goes over 110-113 Celsius.
So, two questions:
1) Are there maybe heat sinks that would need to be re-seated? Cooling fins that might need to be cleaned?
2) Is it possible to replace the GPU? I have an nVidia NVS 140M.
Any other suggestions would be welcome. Unfortunately, this system is out of warranty.
Thanks,
Allan
Solved!
Go to Solution.allancady,
I would pull the keyboard and palmrest and check the fan. Is it dirty? If so, you can blow it out with a can of compressed air.
Since the system was previously taken apart, I would tend to look at the fan and heatsink.
Buy some artic silver thermal compound, pull the fan / heatsink and clean off the thermal grease from the CPU & GPU.
On these systems, there are 3 points of contact on the heatsink. The CPU & GPU use thermal grease to conduct, and the southbridge chip uses a silicon pad. Don't remove the silicon pad - it's kind of like clay / silly putty.
When you reinstall, you would put a spot of artic silver on the CPU and GPU - a spot about the size of a BB will be plenty.
Be sure all the clamps were put back. The heatsink is held down on the CPU by 4 screws, and there is either 1 or 2 clamps that hold down the GPU heatsink. If one of these is missing, it might not be making good contact.
I'll bet the artic silver will fix you up.
In some rare instances, someone who has been in the system previously might have bent the heat pipes on the heat sink slightly. You can visually check for this when you have it apart. If they are bent up a bit, the heat sinks may not make full contact.
Best regards,
Mark
I'd bet this will solve your problem.

MacBook Pro kernal panic caused by video card
I have a mid 2010 MBP running 10.8.4 since upgrading I have had several kernal panics. I think it is a screen redraw issue. I do have and external monitor but it also happens with it disconnected.

Can I get opinions and possible corrections?
ThanksHello Carroll,
I was researching what might be causing the issue you describe here and found a great article for isolating and troubleshooting Kernel Panics named OS X: About kernel panics found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3742.
For OS X Lion and earlier, follow these steps:
Press and hold the Power button for several seconds to turn off your Mac.
Turn on your Mac.
As soon as your Mac starts up, hold down the Shift key to start up with a Safe Boot into Safe Mode. Note: If you are using a third-party external keyboard and cannot start with a Safe Boot, try using an Apple keyboard instead.
If your Mac has another kernel panic starting up, or while in Safe Mode, go to the "Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic" section below.
If your Mac starts up without a kernel panic after a Safe Boot, restart by choosing Apple menu () > Restart…, then let it start up normally.
Important: If the Mac has another kernel panic within a few weeks, refer to the "Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic" section below.
Note: If the hardware and software on the Mac checks out as OK, yet recurring kernel panics still occur, it is possible that something on the network is sending the Mac malformed network packets. In these situations, check the devices on the network. Make sure the router's firmware is up-to-date, and that the router is functioning. Refer to the router's manufacturer for service and support.
If the Safe Boot does not resolve the issue then there is a section toward the bottom labeled Troubleshooting a recurring kernel panic that I would recommend using to further isolate and troubleshoot the Kernel Panics.
All the best,
Sterling -
It's a MacBook pro late 2011. OS X Mountain lion. For several weeks This MacBook pro Unexpectely Shuting down & not charging ( after unexpected shutdown ). Please help me for solve this problem.
Well then you are SOL. It is going to cost you plenty to have it fixed, Sorry.
With all Mac notebooks Apple will more then likely say the Logic board needs replacing. That is because everything on/in a Mac notebook is soldered to the Logic board, CPU, GPU and all the ports. The only parts that aren't are the battery, HDD, DVD drive, heatsink system and fans and the RAM. And in cases like yours the only real fix is to replace the Logic board.
As to the power adapter, you are talking about the AC power system right, you can replace that and or find someone that has a Mac and try theirs. But in the end it is more then likely your Mac that is the problem. More then likely the power system in the Mac with is part of the Logic board.
Good Luck.
