CPU hang after Winows XP shutdown.... ??????

Hello. This is my first time havin to ever do this in a long time, so here goes.
System Specs:
P4 Prescott 3.0Ghz
2 gigs DDR 3200 400Mhz
MSI 865PE Neo2-P mobo
2 Maxtor HD's, one is hooked up via S-ATA
1 DVD Burner and 1 CD Burder
BFG GeForce 7800 GS 256MB
SB Audigy MP3+
Onboard LAN card
PCI Kingston LAN  card for ICS(old and cheap but works good for the purpose)
I have never had this problem before. I am not sure if it is a Windows problem, PSU problem, or Mobo problem.
Computer works great when running. All games and programs run excellent, smooth as a baby's ass. The problem is when I shut the computer down for the day, the last thing that happens when XP is shutting down is that it will say Shutting Down on the screen and when it finally turns the PC off, the cd rom and HD lights remain on and the fans are still spinning. The power button also quit working when this started. I have to shut it off by clicking off the PSU switch. Here is the fun part. When I turn it back on, my 4 LEDs are all red, indicating a CPU failure. Whoa! Slow down! This thing is only like a year old and it is not overclocked or pushed! Temps are always low because artic silver is awesome. I have tried removing everthing in the case to see if it was hardware, including hard drives, and still the same problem. Maybe it's the new video card? Nope. Even when I remove the card I get the same lights, no beeping or nothing. The fans all turn on and work fine. The heatsink is still attached to the CPU well.
So I tried to jump the CMOS jumper to reset everything. YAY! It works again! Life is great! I can get back to playing Heroes V! The night is over, so I shut down again. Boom! Same problem! As soon as Windows XP shuts down completely it hangs again and I cannot restart it. I'm also keeping in mind the fact that my power button is still not working anymore. I removed the connection from the mobo for the power button but it did not help anything at all.
This is the weirdest issue I have ever had. I'm assuming it's a mobo problem cause the power button quit at the same time, but if the mobo had an issue, why would it work fine after jumping it? I need some serious help. As much as I can leave this thing running all the time, I would still like it to rest at night. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Actually this is a common issue on both MSI and ASUS mobos. I have seen it before. Surprised many here haven't had it. But I build 2 machines a month and have seen it a lot about a year ago.
Heres the deal. I don't think its a hardware issue as much as its xp not knowing what to do.
Heres where I would start:
1. Make sure you have the mobos latest firmware. (Although this usually doesn't fix jack)
2. Guess what, you will have to reinstall windows xp. Sorry.
But it's actually not that bad heres what I would do.
Find a scrap hard disk somewhere. Boot off the cd to install windows xp. as it starts and the blue screen comes up do the following. Wait for windows to say press F6 to add special hd driver. When this comes up press F5 notice I said F5. I actually press F5 and F6 not sure if F5 will do what we want alone but I'd try F5 first. If you press F6 too don't worry you can always skip putting in the hd driver.
I also do not install any SATA drivers if I have non raid SATA installed. I let windows take care of that.
Ok so you press F5 after a minute a window will come up that wants to know what kind of system your running. It used to be you would select normal system. Well scroll up and select ACPI uniprocessor. If you have one CPU. In my case I have a dual core and select ACPI mulitprocessor not sure its a multiprocessor but I don't see a problem. After you select that you install windows as normal.
These new mobos have ACPI and if it isn't selected at install they tend to have issues like this.
I haven't seen this problem again since I did these procedures. I'm not 100% sure this is what solved it. But it used to happen every new install I did about a year ago.
Since I recommend doing it on a spare junk drive it shouldn't be too much of an inconvience to do this. By the way it may also have to do with SATA hard disks but I never pegged that down either. I just know I do not have this issue on new installs anymore. The newer asus boards were always giving me grief like this. One reason I switched to MSI after 15 years of ASUS only.
Oh yeah, just try it with one drive. Keep it as simple as you can. Its only a test setup and can be performed a few times before you get it right. Then you can do it to your real hd.

  • Bug-Report: Hyper-V - VM shutdown process hangs after unmount ISO file on host computer

    Hello Microsoft team,
    my HYPER-V VM hangs after I did follow things:
    First I mount an ISO file into my Windows 8.1 Enterprise host (e.g. drive letter X:)
    Now I mount X: into my VM (gen. 1)
    Then I lost connection to X: on my host (e.g. unmount X: on my host computer)
    Now when I shutdown my VM, it will be hangs.
    I reproduced this on three computers with windows 8.1.
    Thanks for help and feedback,
    Gunnar

    Hello Gunnar,
    What do you mean about the sentence ‘mount X: into my VM (gen. 1)’?
    If I mount the Windows 8.1 ISO to drive H:, and then try to install the VM gen 1, it has no issues.
    If I just install the VM gen1 by using the Windows 8.1 ISO that have been mounted to drive H:, I still can’t find the issue.

  • Firefox regularly hangs after an unspecified period of use, and causes other programs to hang, and a forced system shutdown is necessary.

    The firefox browser hangs after an unspecified period of time. Anything from a few minutes after system startup, up to 5-6 hours of use or perhaps more. Attempting to use other programs including windows explorer while firefox is hanging causes those programs to hang also, making a forced shutdown necessary. Occaisionally I've noticed firefox will respond, perhaps after 10 or more minutes. There seems to be no hard disk activity while the program hangs. Memory usage of firefox on my system is usually upwards of 190,000.

    I have circumvented this mostly by running internet explorer, and using Firefox only for browsing when I need to make use of it's addons. In this way I've had the problem re-occur maybe once or twice in the past two weeks. It's not really a solution but it does seem to help, and I'm no longer sure the problem IS firefox but using it certainly exacerbates the problem.
    I've only just updated to firefox 6, so I am not entirely sure how that will go just yet.

  • Powerbook G4 hangs after few minutes of usage

    Since February 06 I have a PB G4: 1.67GHZ, model Powerbook5,8
    Since this weekend it hangs after a few minutes of usage.
    I tried a whole load of possible solutions, like resetting the RAM, removing the battery and holding the powerbutton for 5 seconds...I even held it once for half a minute, but that didn't help. Checking the harddrive with disk utility (tried it often, but only once did the PB work long enough to get the end result: hard drive is healthy).
    Often, when it hangs, I can get it to work by simply turning it off and on again. That gives me another window of 2 minutes of usage! Handy throughout the day when I need a file, or a document: I simply boot the machine, get the file and shut it down.
    Carbon copy to an external HD does not work: the system hangs a few minutes after copying.
    I installed a utility named applejack, and the first time I tried it, I got an interesting error: there were errors with the USB controller or USB bus, and system hangs. I didn't make a screenshot so this is out of the top of my head.
    This was interesting because when I tried to make a HD copy (and believe me: I tried lots and lots of times), the system freezes first, and then an error about not unmounting a device popped into the screen. As if the touchpad, keyboards, and all other i/o devices stop working, and the system goes on for a few seconds more.
    Sometimes the system just hangs, sometimes I get that black kernel panic screen.
    Just before writing this, I tried the hardware test on the install CD once more:
    Held down the option key, chose the hardware test -> quick test and..
    system hangs after completion of the test
    A message appeared in the bottom-left corner. Several lines of information, starting with:
    "ERROR, Write to location ZERO detected!!, Loc zero was originally zero
    Current File: Localization/en/Scripts/enAHTscript.sc"
    etc
    I live on a nice island in the Caribbean, so popping into the nearest Apple store means getting on a flight to Miami first.
    What -if any- are my options? Is there something I can try to do myself before shipping it to Apple? Opening the case, checking this or that?
    By the way, I originally posted this in the Titanium folder, but someone mentioned that I might actually have a Aluminum PB.

    I see in here "AppleUSBTrackpad" and "AppleUSBOHCI".
    Referring to my original post: I have seen an error (a few days ago, when working with applejack) that also mentioned USB.
    I'm very afraid that this is a hardware issue. Reading through some other posts, I saw something about a ribbon that gave problems. What are your thoughts?

  • Queries on oracle hang after index creation

    Hi,
    I have a problem where queries issued on an oracle database hang after I create indexes on some of the tables used by these queries.
    I have a script where I drop indexes :
    DROP INDEX EVP_PCON00_CDSITC_IX;
    DROP INDEX EVP_PCS202_STIMP1_IX;
    DROP INDEX EVP_PECT00_ONAECT_IX;
    DROP INDEX EVP_PVAL01_ONAVAL_IX;
    After this script I load data into those tables.
    Then I launch another script where I recreate the indexes I just dropped :
    CREATE INDEX EVP_PCON00_CDSITC_IX  ON EVP_PCON00(CDSITC) TABLESPACE TS_ODS_INDEX;
    COMMIT;
    CREATE INDEX EVP_PCS202_STIMP1_IX  ON EVP_PCS202(STIMP1) TABLESPACE TS_ODS_INDEX;
    COMMIT;
    CREATE INDEX EVP_PVAL01_CDORIV_IX  ON EVP_PVAL01(CDORIV) TABLESPACE TS_ODS_INDEX;
    COMMIT;
    When the script ends, I try to execute a query using some of the tables I created indexes on :
    SELECT ...
    FROM ....
    WHERE ....
    The query never return a result set, it just hangs, I look at the session browser in toad and the scan of the first table used in the query hangs.
    When I drop those indexes and re execute the query everything works fine.
    Thanks

  • Fresh install of solaris 10 x86 hangs after 'Configuring devices'

    Hi All,
    I just received a new SuperMicro server with an LSI MegaRAID SAS 9261-8i controller. While trying to install Solaris 10 it hangs after "Configuring devices". I checked the LSI page and Solaris 10 is supported according to them. Any ideas how to proceed?
    Fairly new to Solaris on x86 hardware.
    The system has a Xeon X5690 processor in an Intel Workstation Board S5520SC motherboard. The motherboard documents claim that not disabling usb 2.0 can hang an install. I have disabled the usb 2.0 in the bios but the system still hangs. Booting it with the -kd and -kv options don't give much information.
    Any help is appreciated. I might be returning these machines if I can't get this worked out.
    Cheers,
    Steve

    See if you can add the verbose option "-v" to the kernel boot options. I think you can get to the GRUB menu off the Solaris 10 install disk. That should tell you what device is causing the hang, or at least the last device that worked.
    Also, can you try Solaris 11 and see if it gets past that point? A few years ago I has a similar issue with Solaris 10 on a Dell server. Solaris 11/OpenSolaris worked fine, though. IIRC I could work around the issue if I disabled the 2nd CPU - Solaris 10 had a problem bringing up the 2nd CPU on that Dell's CPU/MB config.

  • Pixelbender 2.5 always hangs after some time

    When I'm using Pixelbender 2.5, after 3 or 4 re-builds and moving the slider several times, the PixelBender just hangs (doesn't respond anymore).
    Before it hangs, everything behaves normal as expected.
    This doesn't happen with Pixelbender 2.x.
    All Pixelbender Plugins in Photoshop, After Effects or applied as Flash Shaders work fine, though. It seems to be the PixelBender 2.5 application itself.
    I don't know if this is because of the code I've written, but I can compile and restart it with 2.1 as long as I want, but on 2.5 it hangs after 3 or 4 restarts.
    I'm using:
    Win7, 64Bits, with 4GB RAM, 2.5 GHz Core Duo T9300,
    nVidia 8600M GT with 512MB RAM
    I just hope that the next release will be more stable, because I like the new features in 2.5. (like the image inputs don't get swapped like in 2.1)

    We haven’t managed to repro this problem yet – we’ve run it on a couple of different machines using 2.5 and tested it repeatedly and can’t get it to fail. So, we have some more questions:
    * What mode are you running in? GPU,CPU or Flash?
    * If GPU, do you only see this hang in GPU mode, or can you reproduce it in CPU or Flash mode?
    * If GPU, what is the date and version number of the NVIDIA GPU driver you is using? (and is it up to date – new drivers can be downloaded here http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us)
    * When you hit "Build and Run" are you changing anything? (e.g. editing the filter code, changing modes, changing images etc.)
    * Can you make the images you’re using available to us?
    Thanks
    Bob

  • KT4AV MS-6712 Hang after warm reset

    Alright...this one has been bugging me for quite sometime now, but I've always ignored it. I currently have an MSI board: KT4AV MS-6712.
    I'm runnin the Athlon 2500+ with a gig of ram. Nothing is overclocked. When I first built the system it worked great. However now anytime I restart it from the Windows shutdown screen or even using the reset switch, the system will hang before the POST has completed and made the beep. It'll come up with all its info showing that its checked the ram and its fine and its detected the hard disks and what not... but then it just hangs. Now if you turn the system off for 1-2 minutes, then turn it back on... it fires right up. No problems at all. I've already updated the BIOS with the latest available from the MSI website. As I said before, I had always just ignored the problem because I never found the time to screw with it. But now I really want to fix this because it is annoying! Um... only other things I have in the unit hardware wise are the following:
    TDK 880N DVD Burner
    Lite-On DVD Player
    WD 30GB HDD
    WD 100GB HDD
    Radeon 9800 Pro
    Audigy 2 Gamer
    The D-bracket is also installed.
    Anyone have any ideas at all!???
    Thanks for your help.

    Well actually a full format and clean install of Windows was already performed recently. Also the system has already been cleaned internally. I cannot stand a dirty computer. This is done OFTEN with any machine in my house. Windows having a problem was something I considered though, since it seemed to happen anytime that you would restart from Windows. But its also when you just use the reset switch. And it hangs before the POST is completed. Which makes it seem like it SHOULD be hardware. But its weird because the computer starts up... with the POST screen...not a splash screen. And it goes through all its tests. Such as checking the ram and detecting all the devices and what not. And it gets all the way through everything. The only difference is that it beeps and then boots. It'd be a little easier if it'd hang while detecting and IDE device or whatever ya know? But it doesn't. It appears to fully complete, but it just will hang after a warm reset. I can't remember exactly when it started...it was quite a while ago. However I do not recall making ANY changes to the system when it started. It just started happening. And it used to be that you could turn it off for like 10 seconds, then back on and it'd work Great. Now it seems like you have to wait like a full minute. So I really don't know. I've tried everything I can think of. I've even reduced the unit down to its bare minimum to operate. Still the same. And like I said before I JUST flashed the BIOS like...last night. I was just thinking maybe it was something in it. Still the same. Really running out of options with it. It does work fine though, other than this little annoyance.

  • System hangs after launching P2P

    Hi,
    I have just installed a K7N2 Delta MB with a 2500+ Athlon and a 3200 DDR (PQI) of 512 Mo. My OS is WinXP SP1.
    Everything works very fine until I load a P2P (emule).
    I had not this problem with my defunct Elite MB (with a 1800 Athlon and a 2100 DDR).
    I have an ADSL connection via an ECI USB modem.
    WinXP and the MB Bios and drivers are updated (using Win update and MSI Live monitor). I have also updated the VIA chipsets with VIAHyperion4in1446vp6 and updated the NVidia drivers/programs SINCE the USB host controller is an NVIDIA one (therefore the VIA USB 1.1 cannot be installed)
    I have uninstalled/re-installed all my USB ports and also closed the LPT port.
    The ADSL modem is connected to an hub while I have connected my optical mouse to a separate USB port (since MSI writes that the mouse consumes a lot of energy).
    I have aloso enabled the USB in the Bios and even the KB USB whereas I do not have an USB KB (I had the same problem when the KB USB was not enabled).
    The BIOS indicates an 100 FSB.
    What should I do?
    Thank you in advance.
    (pardon my approximate English and technical languages).

    Sharp,
    I have re-installed WinXP, installed the Nvidia updates (and the MSI and Win XP ones) and installed a more recent and more efficient ADSL connection driver.
    However, eMule hangs after less than 1 minute with a 166 mHz as well as with a 133 mHz FSB (this means: I cannot close it with the Task Manager and I am obliged to re-boot WinXP.
    Moreover, the CPU temperature climbs quickly to 60°C at 166 mHz.
    I know that I could solve the temperature problem by installing a new fan. However, I am not certain that this would solve the hanging one (although one may think that it's the temperature that leads to the hanging.
    I have discovered in the eMule forum that other people with other configurations encounter the same difficulties as me. Therefore, their solutions will probably not be found on this site.
    Thank you for your availability.

  • V210 hangs after "Hardware Watchdog Enabled" on boot

    Hello,
    as I wrote in the subject my SUN V210 hangs after "Hardware Watchdog Enabled" on boot. If I want to shutdown the system with the "power button" I am getting the message "WARNING: Failed to shut down the system!"..
    This failure occures after I mounted the harddisk in another hardware enviroment.
    I am administrating the SUN temporarily over a HyperTerminal connection to the serial management port.
    What could the reason of this problem, and did someone know what I could do?
    Thanks and Best Regards

    Hi,
    now I booted the system with one Solaris cdrom in the single user mode.
    First I try a fsck:
    # fsck -F ufs -o b=32 /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

    where # is the alternate super block. SEE fsck_ufs(1M).So I try to find the next superblock.
    # newfs -N /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0
    mkfs: bad value for size: 640 must be between 1024 and 640
    mkfs: size reset to default 640

    super-block backups (for fsck -F ufs -o b=#) at:But I did not get an alternative super-block no..
    Did I have another chance?
    To run installboot just for kicks. What do you mean with this?
    To reinstall the bootblock with:
    installboot /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

  • Satellite U400-22n and Win7 - screen hangs after 5 min

    Hi, This is my first post
    Ive purchased a new U400 with Vista preinstalled, last week ; 2 days ago Ive upgraded to windows 7 32bit professional when I stared Installing it windows prompted me that it requires a full installation , so I done a normal full install, windows 7 installed normally .
    Now my screen hangs after 5 min and windows gos black and reboots after 3-5 min, Ive downloaded all the drivers from the Toshiba site Ive used the auto detect, and installed the drivers one by one and tested if the reboot stops , Ive reinstalled windows now 4-5 time returned my copy to the shop and got a new copy of the windows DVD, its the same,
    Please has some one any advice for me. As the shop Ive perched this from will not upgrade to windows 7 for me.

    hi Mather,
    any bluescreens visible?
    win7 32bit i guess...
    you have to install all the drivers for win7 provided by toshiba in the right order!
    first chipset and patchfiles if available...
    i think a clean install will do the job!
    make sure that the hdd is error free!
    you can upgrade from vista 32bit to win7 32bit
    but no chance to upgrade to a win7 64bit when a vista 32bit is installed...

  • Iphoto hangs after upgrading to Yosemite and latest iPhoto version

    It tells me the library needs upgrading, and starts to search the library. The progress bar suggests something is happening then hangs after about 99% completion. I have had to force close twice after several hours stuck at that point and then start the whole process from scratch when I restart.

    Have you followed these instructions - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/Help/rebuilding%20a%20corrupted%20iphoto%20li brary.html
    iPhoto Library Manager > Help > Rebuilding a corrupted iPhoto library
    Printable help
    Rebuilding a corrupted iPhoto library
    If you have an iPhoto library that is corrupt and causing iPhoto to crash or otherwise be unusable, iPhoto Library Manager provides the ability to rebuild your library based on the information found in its library data files. Note that iPhoto also has a built-in rebuild function that can be sometimes be used to repair a corrupted library database. You can find instructions on how to use that on Apple's website at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638 (iPhoto 6 or later) or http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2042 (iPhoto 5 or earlier).
    iPhoto Library Manager's rebuild works differently, in that instead of trying to repair the library in place, it creates a brand new library and tries to reimport the entire contents of the original library into the new one, including reconstructing albums, photo metadata, etc. Note that rebuilding a library has all the same limitations as other photo transfer operations as far as what can and can't be copied between libraries. Also, depending on how badly damaged the library is, iPhoto Library Manager may or may not be able to piece together some or all of the library metadata.
    To start a rebuild, select the library you would like to rebuild, then choose the "Rebuild Library" item from the "Library" menu. You will be prompted to choose a location for the rebuilt library, and whether or not you want iPLM to scavenge orphaned photos it finds in the library package. Once you've made your choices, iPLM will examine the library and rebuild the library structure and photos as best it can, then display you a preview of what it was able to find. If your library is badly damaged and the preview is missing a lot of content from the original library, this can save you from going through with a rebuild that won’t end up being of much help.
    Once you've had a chance to examine the preview, if you want to go forward and create the rebuilt library, click the "Rebuild" button in the upper right. iPhoto Library Manager will create a new library and start importing the contents of the original library into the new one.
    Scavenging photos
    In some cases, either the iPhoto library database is too damaged for iPhoto Library Manager to be able to salvage any information from it, or the library data is incomplete and there are photos that still exist inside the library package, but iPhoto has lost track of them. In these cases, you may want to check the "Scavenge orphaned photos" checkbox when choosing a location for the rebuilt library. After iPhoto Library Manager has read the library data as best it can, it will perform an additional pass through the package and locate any photos that are no longer referenced in the library database. Any additional photos that are found will be included in the rebuild, and a new "Scavenged Photos" album will be created in the rebuilt library containing any scavenged photos.
