CPU is constantly full, but I'm not running any programs

According to the Activity Monitor, my CPU is always being used at 100% capacity. Of this, 89%-99% of it is supposedly being used constantly by the user. There is no idle CPU space according to the Activity Monitor. The problem is, I'm not running a single major program (outside of the automatic programs the Mac always runs).
This CPU usage makes my fan go for hours and hours and the computer's temperature is running very hot. The computer also is acting slightly slow.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem. My solution may or may not work for you, but it is worth a look. Crank up Activity monitor (Utilities). See if there is a process that can't be accounted for while everything else is off. They have undecipherable names so you may need help of a nerdy friend. The System itself shouldn't be using more than 10-15 percent with nothing going on.
Hint: If you see a suspect process click on the Blue "i" that will open a window. Look at "Parent Process" That will give you the name in English
In my case, The Adobe Reader Updater, AddressbookSync, Main Menu, and Ical Alarm scheduler were all eating my CPU while doing nothing. Adobe Updater, and addressbookSync must be hunted down and thrown out or it will return. Check your Login Items (Accounts) in System Preferences. If there are programs that start up automatically(listed under Login Items).Delete them one by one and restart and check the Activity Monitor to see if things are better.
Hint#2: Look for items you didn't put in or don't recognize.

1. You're in the iTunes for Mac forum - there is also iTunes for Windows forums.
2. Any incomplete downloads are marked as such and should still be available for completion.
3. Explorer is not relevant - all downloads come direct from the iTunes Music Store.
4. You can contact Apple from their website if you are getting download problems and being charged

MacBook currently running OS 10.6.8 will start up but will not run any programs, including Finder, let alone Terminal. Any suggestions? Am I totally screwed?

I start up, that takes like 15 minutes. Desktop photo appears. Dock, Finder, and menu bar appear briefly before disappearing. Cannot open any programs, because clicking on anything is impossible. So... am I screwed? I did not back up for a few weeks. I don't want to lose all my work. Really distraught, really poor (can't afford another laptop), really confused.

Turn on machine
hold command s until you get a black screen
type:
fsck -yf
if you see any:
disk0s2 I/O Error
Your hard drive is failing.
if that fixes some stuff, make sure you type
mount -uw /
and then
halt to shutdown

Time machine says my drive is full, but it's not

time machine says my drive is full, but it's not. it is a 298 gig external drive with 51 gigs available. my internal drive on my lap top (the one I am backing up) is a 148 gigs with 44 gigs available. the backup folder on the external drive is
152 gigs.
how can i fix time machine so it can figure out that the external drive isn't full?

It would sure be nice if I could back up when I want. Seems like time machine is just one of those ideas that apple didn't think all the way through.
You can. And TM works just fine for most people. There is something unusual in your setup, or the way you're doing things, that's causing your difficulties.

I kept forgetting and procrastinating about following your instructions, since I have internet access only for limited amounts of time and usually I am busy with important tasks when I am.
Out of the blue, the problem corrected itself (the Save As box started to open full screen, then shrunk down to a normal size and the edges can now be dragged to a custom size).
Even the copy and paste problem in the filenaming area seems to have been less troublesome lately even though there have been no updates to Firefox in a few weeks.
Even though I marked the solution as not helpful, the problem has in fact been resolved. I will save the solution instructions in case the issue returns.

Which operating system are you running? It might still be running in the background. You may want to check your Task Manager or Activity Monitor. Or better yet, if you feel uncomfortable with that, try logging out of your user account, then back in. That might kill any stray processes.

For 10.6.8 you need Safari 5.1.10.
Ideally, you'd now install a system backup made before you got 6.0.4 on there... if that's not possible, download Safari 5.1.10 for Snow Leopard & use Pacifist to 'force' the install, then restart. Backup first, if you haven't already.

If you bought an Apple gift card, then you cannot use it in the iTunes store. You can only use it in the Apple store for hardware.
You would need an iTunes gift card to buy anything in iTunes

Though it refers to items purchased from the iTunes Store, it applies to all your iTunes content. And if you happen to also own an iPod:
How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Once you have the tracks on some removable medium, you can mount that on your new computer and then just drag the content to the iTunes window. Make sure that the option to "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is set in the iTunes -> Advanced -> General preferences before you do. Alternatively, you can use the Add To Library command and select each track (or folder of tracks).
If you won't be using that Windows system once you move the content, don't forget to deauthorize the system from your iTunes Store account before you dispose of the computer.

Start by signing out and back in to see if it will see the subscription:

If the apps are installed fine and close after launch see this link:
