Cpu issue...... novice question!

hi all, I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 8gb ram, largest hard drive (not solid state)
anyway, I bought for recording music, I use pro tools and I get errors saying, increase CPU  etc etc
since I have adjusted/optimized as much as I can within the computer to no real success,
I was wondering if increasing the ram with a 3rd party part to 16gb.
would this help any? or is there any other tips or tricks you guys can recommend.
thanks for your time!
rob

There's no way to 'increase CPU' - perhaps you may be getting errors due to RAM. If so, a 16GB upgrade may help. The next time you get the error, can you post a screen shot (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4391)?

    CPU Issues with music production.
    Hey guys. I bet this sort of question has been asked so many times, but i really have spent a long time searching google to get an answer. I have had no luck. I found many things on the subject, but nothing about this exact situation.
    Okay, I have a Macbook 4.1 which has 2gb of ram, 2.1 GHz Intel core 2 duo processor, and a 111 gb HD with a rpm of 5400.
    I have been having major CPU overloads whilst using Logic 8, And it is much worse when using Pro Tools 7.2 M-Powered.
    Now, im not that knowledgeable with computer stuff, but I have a plan.
    Im about to upgrade my ram to 4gb, and im getting a new hard drive that will be 320 gb and will be 7200 rpm and 16gb cache (whatever that means).
    I believe that having a hard drive at 7200 rpm is pretty essential for music programs like these.
    Now hopefully this will help me with the CPU, as i have found out I cant upgrade the processor as its soldered on.
    Will this machine be able to handle Logic Pro 8 after the mod??
    The real question i guess is: Is a "2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo" processor enough to happily run logic 8?
    P.S I will not be recording audio. I use the synths etc included.
    Thanks in advance guys.

    111Gigs is a small disk
    How much free space in your system disk?
    when a disk contain files from over than 80% and only about 20% is free the speed of the hard drive goes down... some disk can loose more than 50% of fast addressing speed
    Leopard require at least 50GB free space for run without problem!
    for better performance up to 1/3 of the disk size should be required...

    you use Logic with a Digidesign Drivers?
    try to disconnect the Digi device and use Internal Audio of your Mac...
    maybe only that can solve your issue.

    buying a 320GB at 7200?
    I suggest you a 500GB at 5400 RPM
    the 7200 Hard drive are not so good for stay inside Macbook chassis
    the working temperature in a 7200 RPM disk should be cause slower speed than a more cool/fresh 5400 RPM
    The temperature rise up if disk is full over than 1/3 of its capabilities...
    (this rules are related with Disk performance but can be affected also CPU power in the real time processing because the system run on the same disk)
    The hard drive temperature is strictly related with disk speed performance
    and logic use a lot of streaming from to disc access for the EXS24 virtual memory and other Instruments and Synths...
    *this can be the primary cause of CPU spikes*
    I believe that having a hard drive at 7200 rpm is pretty essential for music programs like these.
    I suggest a 500GB 5400 RPM!

  • MainStage 2.2.1 - CPU issues with old MacBook

    I just downloaded MainStage 2 for my trusty old MacBook - it's 2.0GHz Core Duo, 2GB... best spec you can make it really.
    I use it to run both Ableton Live and Garageband with absolutely no problems... The CPU handles both apps fine, unless I have some stuff running in the background. But most of the time the CPU hovers around 50%.
    So I was quite surprised when I downloaded MainStage 2 and started using it... The CPU is pretty constant at about 100%. Sometimes it goes up as far as 150%. And this is when idle! Although I don't have much memory, MainStage is not taking up a huge amount (about 350MB) and I still have some headroom left... So I'm assuming that isn't the issue.
    I've looked at other threads and one solution was to up the audio buffer time in the preferences. Mine was already set to 256 samples, but I tried higher and it didn't make any difference. Can anyone help? I bought it for live performance, but considering how dodgy it's looking with the CPU, I'm a little worried about doing so.
    Thanks!

    Hi Chiccorosso!
    I appreciate that I'm "playing with the big boys now" and that my hardware is pretty old... However I was just really confused as to why it was this bad... Garageband handles playing a piano patch with ease, whereas MainStage, set up to do exactly the same task, runs my CPU at full pelt even when no sounds are being played!
    I've seen others mention CPU spikes too, where the sound cuts out, which isn't good for a live performance obviously... And these people are on machines with much better specs than mine. Using up 100% CPU for a task such as this does make me wonder whether there is some seriously unoptimised code in MS... Ableton Live is pretty professional and copes way better.
    As to your points:
    My MacBook's maximum official RAM upgrade is 2GB, so mine is maxed-out in that respect. Apparently it can access up to 2.5GB, but the only way of doing that is by buying 4GB RAM and effectively wasting 1.5GB of it. But I take your point, and perhaps it's worth the money for that extra half a gig. What do you think?
    I will try the 0dB limiting as you suggested, but I don't think I was ever playing up to those volume levels. Obviously when I'm not playing anything, there is no sound level at all and yet still the CPU is blazing away around 100%.
    What do you mean by little icons in the menu bar? Are you referring to my OS menu bar items? I do have iStat Menus installed which is very handy for noticing these CPU issues but I will disable them all and see if it makes a difference.
    I have the two default effects running through the buses (I don't know all the terminology yet because I'm very new to it!). I don't really need both, but I do need at least reverb or it'll defeat the object of me using MS. I'll try cutting back and see what happens.
    Thanks

  • Java Novice Question (don't shoot me)

    Hello,
    I wanted to ask a very novice question, that I can't seem to find an answer to.
    I have Eclipse IDE for Java, and I also have Visual Studio (C#). In Visual Studio, you can create a application project, drag and drop a button, then double click the button tod be taken to the code behind the button, that's where you insert your code on what you want the button to do once you click it.
    Is there something similiar to that in Java (I know there must be), where you can drag and drop textboxes, buttons, etc., and then double click those items to code?
    Any light that ANYONE can shed on this would be highly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Thats not what I got from your first message. I thought your were simply after create a rich client (I.e. Java Swing). Creating a web site is a more advanced topic. I don't know of any GUI editors for it, but then I don't do it (I half expect someone to post IntelliJ IDEA now). But we are just talking HTML and lots of HTML editors exist.
    I don't care how easy the website, as long as I can learn (on a basic level). You are going to have to look up tutorials on Java EE.Personally I don't think this is a "new to java" topic.

    Re: "Right tool for right job"...are you suggesting that I have Eclipse for coding Java, and NetBeans for more GUI apps and developement?The UI for rich clients I do in NetBeans. Everything else I do in Eclipse. But this is just me, and I'm luck enough to be able to dictate tool chains.

  • Sorry, another CPU fan speed question.

    Hi,
    Just got a new 2011 iMac 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 21 inch. First mac and loving it so far! I can hear the fans just slightly at idle in a quiet room and checked on this forum to see what is the normal idle fan speed.
    Most of the results come back with the CPU fan running at around 938 rpm. mine is constant at 1199 rpm. A few others have this speed too, but he majority are around the 938 rpm level (some much higher). My temps also seem lower than most at idle too (due to the higher fan speed i guess).
    OP Drive 998
    HD Drive 1099
    CPU 1199
    My question/s:
    Why the difference between machine (shouldn't they be set the same in all machines with the same spec with software)?
    And is the normal??
    Thx

    Also, would I notice it being quieter with it at 938 compared to 1199?

  • Latest 10.8.5 mod slowed my computer - kernel_task cpu issue

    Installed the 10.8.5 supplemental mods and the Java update last night.  After doing so, the kernel_task cpu issue - which I had eliminated a year ago - has come back.  It is making time-machine unusable in both normal and safe mode.  How do I fix?  Backing out or restoring to previous time machine settings seems impossible due to the processing speeds.  Reinstall??

    Final answer!  This was a case where the 10.8.5 updates overwrote / reinstalled the "plist" files which control the power throttling of the CPU.  The pasted link has a whole discussion and fix with the details.  I had run with this fix since Aug 2012 and this was the first Mountain Lion upgrade that caused me to re-do it.  As an FYI, there are RISKS specified with this fix, but in my case I have not come close to having excessive temps or any functional issues.

  • G42-415DX cpu issue

    Hello, this is my first time on these forums.
    -My laptop is a HP G42-415DX (product: XZO46UA#ABA) notebook
    -os is windows 7 home premium
    -LED code is 1 blink, which is cpu issue
    -can't remeber any changes besides installing new java.
    So heres how it started, I turn it on, and it won't boot. Won't go into post screen either. Gives me a blink code indicating its the cpu. So before buying a replacement cpu I did some troubleshooting, I hooked the laptop up into another monitor, and its still blank. I cleaned the whole laptop inside and out, and it still didn't work. The ram and the hdd are seated properly. Today a new replacement cpu arrived in the mail (AMD Athlon II p340 mobile). I replaced the cpu into the socket s1g4 on my motherboard, making sure not to push it in or put too much thermal compound on it. I power it up and i still get the same error. I have performed a power reset also.
    Anyone have any ideas on what could be the problem, or what could be the next step to troubleshoot the system?

    hi dear
    i have same laptop and the same problem with soundnaut
    what you advise me ?

  • Merom CPU Compatibility & Technical Question

    I read that Intel demonstrated that the upcoming Merom chip was drop-in compatible with the current Core Duo chips. Because the current systems' CPU is soldered to the motherboard I understand that current systems will not be upgradable. My question is timing of their release based on hardware engineering. This question is for the engineers out there.
    What other issues would need to be addressed from a hardware perspective in the changeover to the Merom chip? Are there reasons why Apple would not simply drop in the new chips once they start shipping? Do they need to change things for heat management (do the chips run hotter or cooler)? Do they need to update any of the supporting chipsets in order to start shipping Merom systems? Have there been any other reports of competitors' approaches to this chip change?

    There's no reason they won't just drop them in, its like the PC world which I live in, if its the same socket, just drop it in and if it needs a bios update, update it and you got pretty much a new computer.
    as I understand from the Core 2 Duo Line up, its basically an entirely new internal architecture. where as the current core duo is based on the Pentium M, which is really fast already..
    not sure about consumption though

  • High CPU issue due to table.setForeground() in JTable renderer

    Hi,
    I have a JTable with a renderer to set the text color for the row if certain conditions exist.
    The code below "works" although I have two issues:-
    1. The command "table.setForeground(Color.BLUE);" in the code below causes 50% CPU utilisation (Win XP, service pack 3). Very strange and consistent - tested on two different PCs.
    2. At times, the first column below the intended column changes color. The rest of the intended column has color set correctly.
    I'm using beans binding with the table concerned so can't post the table model - I believe the binding effectively has it's own model.
    Be greatful for any insight as it seems v. strange.....
    Thanks,

    Here's my latest attempt, but still some questions and issues.
    I create a textColour class and this time attempt to set the colour on the component rather than the whole table in a similar fashion to the prepareRenderer(&hellip;) method.
    This appears to work and the CPU is no longer 50% utilisation.
    However, I still have the following questions/issues/observations:-
    1. I now need to set a renderer for each type of data. Perhaps this is the way it "should" be done. For example, I need to add " masterTable.setDefaultRenderer(Date.class, new textColour());" and then reformat the dates otherwise they don't change color. Would have been nice to set the colour for the whole row BUT can't see how as I can't use the preparedRenderer method?
    2. Perhaps related to the above, as I now return "comp", I don't call the default tableRenderer : i.e. " return delegate.getTableCellRendererComponent(table, value, isSelected, hasFocus, row, column);" {code} Is there a cleaner/"better" way to do this? If I do return the above, I don't see any colour change as my changed "comp" is replaced by returning the component from the default call above.
    3. Persumably I'm no longer in a loop as CPU is "normal" and no where near 50% (more like 0%). I still set the row to be BLACK first otherwise all rows change colour (BLUE) but looks like the row isn't rendered until the component is returned.
    4. I no longer have the second issue of colour being incorrect for the first column of one row. So that's good!
    Here's the latest ver of the code.......
    Thanks,
    {code:java}
            masterTable.setDefaultRenderer(String.class, new textColour());
            masterTable.setDefaultRenderer(Date.class, new textColour());
          public class textColour extends DefaultTableCellRenderer {
            @Override
            public Component getTableCellRendererComponent(JTable table, Object value,
                    boolean isSelected, boolean hasFocus, int row, int column) {
                MailingList mL = (MailingList) queryList.get((table.convertRowIndexToModel(row)));
                Component comp = super.getTableCellRendererComponent(table, value, isSelected, hasFocus, row, column);
                if (value instanceof java.util.Date) {
                    this.setText(shortDf.format((Date) value));
                comp.setForeground(Color.BLACK);
                if (mL.getApplicationAppId() != null) {
                    if (mL.getApplicationAppId().getSembookingsCollection() != null) {
                        Collection sB = mL.getApplicationAppId().getSembookingsCollection();

  • MOVED: Big Bang XPower - CPU Core Ratio Question

    This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=141572.0

    Just to clarify, is it now set to multi 25 or 26? If 26 with a 160 bclk, it should read about 4.160. What does the RAM speed & timings read? These questions can be verified in CPU-Z. QPI V. of 1.35 seems a bit on the high side. Although every system even with the same components can react different, my RAM when set to 1600 runs easily on 'Auto' (default) QPI V.
    Edit: We need to get a ticket in with MSI Tech Support. I just checked mine & it does the same as you are reporting. Set multi to 27, & in Windows & 'Read Only' top of Cell Menu screen, no change is in effect. It always was reporting the correct bclk, but didn't show the multi or actual system speed correctly. CPU-Z with 27 multi set in Cell Menu;
    MSI Tech Support doesn't openly involve itself in OC issues, but this is a case of the board not providing full support of the EE CPU. This is with beta bios 1.4b2, is that what you are using also?

  • Toshiba Satellite a505-6005 hard drive issue and questions regarding options I may have

    Issue: start up computer and windows does not start. It eventually goes to a startup repair screen and eventually says "resolving disk errors...", and that's if it even gets to that screen. Unfortunately I never made a recovery disk or system image discs (I know that was not smart). I did however kept my files backed up so that was good.
    Steps I took: Took it to Best Buy and the tech advised me that the Black Tie 2 year protection had expired on Jan 30th 2012, and so it could not be repaired for free. I asked the tech there how much it would cost to fix and they had advised me that it was most likely a hard drive issue and that it would cost nearly $400 to replace/fix it. So I decided to buy a new Asus K53E-BBR14 laptop since it was not much more. When I got home and loaded everything up and got the computer to how I want, I went ahead and made a recovery disc and system image disc's. I tried using the recovery disc that I had made with my Asus in the Toshiba laptop and boot it from the dvd drive and it did not get anywhere. So I ASSUME that it really is a hard drive error because the RAM worked just fine in my new laptop and "repairing disk errors.." means something is wrong with the hard drive:
    Now that you know the background of what has happened my questions are as followed:
    1. Can I buy a new hard drive for the Toshiba and use the recovery and system image disc's i created on the new hard drive that i install in the toshiba? and just removed the bloatware from Asus (or does that not even get added to the disc's I created)?
    2. If so, will it prompt me to enter the Windows 7 product key? and therefore using the product key located on the bottom of the toshiba?
    3. What other steps could I take to make this toshiba laptop salvageable? This way i can turn around and sell it.
    Thanks,
    Russell States

    Also,
    I noticed that i can purchase (well pay the shipping anyways) recovery media from Toshiba. Can I use that on a new hard drive installed in the toshiba?
    BTW ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool and no problems were found with the memory. and i do not care about the old hard drive as I have MY files backed up. I just want to try to get this toshiba laptop back to being "like new".
    Thanks,
    Russell

  • Problems installing windows on a clean Mac Pro internal drive - issues and questions

    Hey,
    I have a Mac Pro mid 2010 with the following drive configurations:
    3x120GB SSD in a RAID-0 as Boot (OS X 10.8.6) and SSD Scratch (working files)
    3x4TB HDD in a RAID-0 as Master (data) and HDD Scratch (downloads)
    1x100GB SSD (Spare...to install windows on)
    I have literally tried every possible way of installing Windows 8 on that single SSD...both using bootcamp and without.
    I can get it installed and working, install all the drivers/updates/software...involving multiple reboots into windows. Everything seems fine, and i shut down and boot into OS X, which works perfectly as expected. BUT, when i try and boot into Windows again (using <option> key at startupand selecting the windows volume, called "EFI Boot" which i did not name) I can log in and start using apps and then 20-40 seconds later i get the BSOD.
    I can't for the life of me figure out why.
    It's the easiest thing in the world to partition a single OSX drive to boot windows ON THE SAME DRIVE, but i can't seem to boot stably into a standaloe internal drive.
    NOTE: I prepare the Windows drive by formatting the entire thing to "Free Space" using disk utility in Mac OS X, and can see that there are no partitions (EFI or otherwise) on the drive. Then I pull all the other drives except the target drive, reboot with a Windows 8 USB drive (created by BootCamp Assistant on my macbook air, because apparently some genius thought that task was too complicated for a Mac Pro...jks) and install from there.  The funny part is that i can pick out the target drive in the windows setup, it's registering as 1 disk/partition of UNALLOCATED SPACE, as expected, but there is a warming that windows cannot be installed on this drive because my computer does not support booting to this disk, and that i should check that it's controller is enabled in the BIOS.....which to the best of my knowledge is not used by intel-macs, which use UEFI. But i can still click "Next", so I do and install Windows and boot to this drive, restarting and installing software updates and drivers as mentioned above.
    The BSOD seems to pop up only after i've rebooted to Mac OS X and then try to go BACK to Windows 8.
    The version of windows 8 and install USB were checked using my macbook air, and they work flawlessly. ASLO that warning about not being able to boot to the drive during windows setup isn't present.
    I'm wondering if the fact the the RAID volumes are a software RAID, using Disk Utility in OSX is causing windows some issues...which makes no sense.
    I'll keep playing, but I'm not confident I'm ever going to find a solution.
    Somebody be my hero...

    Hey Hatter,
    Another question for you:
    I can't seem to use system preferences>>startup disk to boot into windows. When I select windows and then restart i get a black "BIOS-like" screen which then cuts out and a message is displayed that says "there is no bootable disc"
    This stumped me, because I know i can boot into windows from the boot screen (holding down option and selecting "EFI Boot" which apparently is what my windows drive is called.
    because of my Mac OSX Raid arrays, i had to install windows by formatting a drive to HFS+ (GUID) pratition table, then repartition to "Free Space" then using an install usb that i made with my macbook air, pull all my other drives and install by selecting the usb drive to boot from.
    I went into disk utility to see if I can repair the disk, and disk utility says that the disk has to EFI partition and that we won;t be able to boot from it....which is very confusing because i can boot from it.
    Windows 8 apparentl;y uses UEFI from my research....so i'm utterly stumped.
    I beleive this is also the cause of my newly purchased graphics card Mac Edition HD 7950, throwing me a BSOD when i select to boot in windows from the boot menu...
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • After 1 year, I finally solved the Flash Player 100% CPU issue!

    I created this guide to help people with this problem.
    http://sgsoft.bravehost.com/flashcpuproblem.html
    My problem was after watching/doing Flash videos or anything Flash related, my CPU would go up to 100% and whole computer slows down to a point I had to close my browse through Task Manager.
    Both in Firefox and Internet Explorer.  Searched all over the web and still couldn't find a solution.
    It was my CPU heating issue causing this slowdown and sluggish performance of Flash.
    Hope, it helps you guys.

    You may wish to note that at least some of the problems on any Windows system after Windows XP could relate to the use of FlashPlayers protected mode.
    Some users may wish to employ the most recent version of Flash Player that will work on their sytem. in which case it could be worth trying an up-to-date version of FlashPlayer but with protected mode disabled.
    The setting is changeable by editing a file ( adding the line ProtectedMode=0 to the Flash "mms.cfg" file) and instructions may be found in these articles
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Flash_Player_11.3_Protected_Mode_-_Windows <br /> Probably an interesting reference article to scroll through regarding Flash Problems with Firefox

  • CPU Issue?

    Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice with my setup.
    I've got the K8Neo2 Platinum nVidia nForce3 ATX MOBO with an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz processor.
    My issue is with the score im getting from 3DMark05, and yes i've posted there, and they said it was a MOBO/Processor issue.
    I'm getting a VERY low CPU score, and less than 1FPS with the CPU tests.
    Here is a link to my specs/score. http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1188506
    Just post up any more information that you'd need to know to be able to help me out.
    Any help with this is appreciated greatly. Feel free to IM me on Waimzey.

    Good job upgrading your nForce chipset drivers as well as your processor drivers to the latest versions.
    Your input: "I had 24 processes running and zero applications other than the benchamrk when i ran the 3DMark05 this time, Still had no change in the score." Did you get rid of anti-virus completely or was it still just disabled in your systray?
    Your input: Also, As far as my memory goes. On the POST screen it pops up this information,
    DDR 200 Single Channel: 64bit Mem Clock is 100 (just below this line you should see your memory timings, what are they?)
    These numbers are troublesome but more DATA require to analyse. Please yield to my request and go to this forum user profile and take time to build a detail sig block containing your system details. Use other members signature blocks as benchmark. We truly need this to help you. All I can GUESS for now is that if you have two 512 memory sticks running in your computer they are only running in singlle channel and you DDR and Mem clock are cut by half. If this is the case it need to be rectified.
    Your statement: And then in my DRam config, under the Cell Menu in the BIOS..
    Max Memclock - Auto (should be 200 MHz)
    1T/2T Memory Timing - 1T (this is OK)
    Then the other 4 options (Cas# latency, Ras#, etc) They are all set to Auto (manually set by you)
    Overall, this is interesting info - Auto settings may not be doing the job for you but I cannot say conclusively until I know what your 1024 memory package is made off and into what memory slots you have inserted them into (should be first two from CPU, one Green and one purple). Furthermore you should set all memory options manually to what is required by you an OEM, so research your memory timings and voltage.
    CPU set up in BIOS should also be done manuallly to accurately reflect AMD specs for your CPU and you MS-7025 motherboard:
    HT frequency : 5T
    I will be assuming you have an AMD A64 Athlon 3500+ for below settings)
    Adjust CPU Ratio: 11
    Adjust CPU Frequency: 200
    CPU Voltage/Vcore: Manually set your CPU voltage value as per OEM
    Memory voltage: Manual value as per OEM
    Looking forward to getting more info from you, good luck

  • 2 novice question

    Hi
    i have 2 question about premiere pro cs3
    1) import video , install Qlite http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QT_Lite.htm  can increase the video import or export feature ?
    2) i'm reallya  novice , i'm a photoshop cs3 user , can i with premiere pro cs3 edit the colors ? make some some part more dark like curve or selective colors ?
    thanks

    1 - For SD (Standard Definition) work, Premiere works best with DV AVI Type 2 files
    This cannot be stressed enough. This is the designed workflow for most NLE's, and holds for everything in the Premiere lineup. While some CODEC's can be worked with internally, most cannot. Conversion to DV-AVI Type II w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV will always work best. Even if you have the proper CODEC and it's installed properly on the system, there is no guarantee that Pr can use it. In most cases, it's a certainty that they will not. Also remember that because a player on your system can play a file, there is a great difference between playing a file, and editing a file.
    2 - Look in the user guide you just downloaded to see what effects are available
    There are many Effects in Pr, that have a correlation to the adjustments in Photoshop, Brightness & Contrast, Highlight & Shadow, Levels and Luma Curves are but a few. The PremierePro-wiki is a great place to explore, after you read the guide from the link that John furnished. I'd suggest that one read all of the FAQ's and then start working through the tutorials. Do not limit your reading to just your version of Pr. Much from earlier and later versions will still apply, though you may have to look for a menu, or be aware of a name change someplace. With a little study, you'll find a lot of similarities between PS and Pr.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
