CPU Kernel Panic! Grey Curtain of Death!!!!!!!!!!

I'm getting constant kernel panics with the grey curtain of death!!!!! I've tried taking out my UAD cards, my Symphony card, extra ram, resetting the PRAM as well as doing an erase and install, but noting seems to work. I wondering if my computer is going dead on me. Here is a view of the latest panic log.

dude I was just having this problem. its a nightmare i know.
what system are you running specifically? all the specs lol. and then what os are you running?
I was having a kernel panic just about every time I booted up. I did a fresh install on my 2nd hard drive. not just a reinstall or an update but a completely new install. after that i ran the disk repair and repair permissions out of the disk utility. come to find out i had an incomplete install of leopard running so every time i tried to update or use safari it freaked out.
try that if you can I sure hope it helps. since it sounds like u tried removing all other peripherals and extra hardware.

  • 2006 iMAC intel core duo Kernel Panic + Black Curtain of Death

I've had this iMAC since 2006 w/o a problem. Lately been getting the "curtain of death" and screen to restart the computer. Saw similar discussions about these Kernel Panics. Brought the iMAC to Apple Store and tech thought it was a bad logic board and recommended not to fix it ($800+). I have trouble, as did the tech getting it to boot. Today I got it to boot and before it crashed again, I managed to run the Hardware Test from the original OS disc 1. This showed no problem in both tests. Did get the panic log (see below) can anyone make heads or tails of this? Thanks

If you attempt to boot from an external HD that is set up as a bootable clone and it fails to boot that almost certainly points to the Mac having a hardware. The bootable clone would have had to be setup prior to the failure. Many people (myself included) keep redundant backups, I would recommend doing the same when you have either repaired or replaced the current machine. Macworld runs articles where users describe their own backup strategies, I'd recommend reading them and then deciding which works best for your needs.

  • Kernel Panics, Gray screen of death, and hard drives, oh my!

Last week, while performing multiple tasks on my G4, Safari froze up and completely locked up the entire computer. I rebooted by manually pushing the glowing power button the front of the tower. During reboot, I got the gray screen of death with the "you need to restart your macintosh... by holding down the power button for several seconds" message.
After a couple tries and getting that exact same gray screen of death, I started to worry about all my data.
I took both drives out of the G4 Quicksilver - one, a 500gb Barracuda Seagate (Master/bay 1), the other a 200gb Hitachi (slave/bay 2). I hooked them up to an older G4 and ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtility on both of them. The master drive had serious (>34%) fragmentation, which has since been cleaned up. The slave drive was relatively fine.
    here's my current problem:
    When I hook up:
    1. Just the Master with no jumper pins, the drive runs fine, no problems, all settings and prefs are there, etc.
    2. Just the Master with the correct pin settings, I get the kernel panic screen of death
    3. The Master with correct pin settings and Slave with correct pin settings, kernel panic screen of death
    4. If I swap the Master and Slave, and make the correct pin settings, the booting process starts and then I get a light gray screen with the "ghostbusters/do not enter" circle.
I put the original Slave drive in an external HD firewire enclosure, and it will mount on the desktop after the original Master drive has booted up - BUT - if I have the external drive powered up before I boot the Master, I get a gray screen with nothing on it - no message, nothing but grayscreen.
I've backed up my critical data, but would like to get these two drives back into their normal operating Master/Slave relationship that served them well for the last couple years.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    New wrinkle:
This morning trying at boot up, the Mac chime sounded, the gray screen w/the apple logo appeared, and then the machine sounded like either the main fan or one of the two drives spun down. Shortly thereafter, I got the prohibitory sign again.
I rebooted and then got something completely different: a black screen with a small blinking vertical rectangle in the top left of the screen, with nothing else happening for a long time, so I manually rebooted and tried to boot into safe mode.
Trying to boot into safe mode gave me the chime, the apple logo, and then the sound of either the fan or drive spinning down and leaving me at the prohibitory sign once again.
Finally I option-booted to the slave drive and upon startup, received the following crash report, which might as well be in Swahili as far as my being able to make sense of it:

  • Kernel panics & grey debug screen at startup

Tiger (10.4.10) on a 2 GHz Mac mini (Intel) and Airport as well as IPv6 disabled.
Not sure which torrent client I installed first but I think it was Transmission and everything was fine. Then I installed Azureus on the advise of a friend and started getting kernel panics. Switched back to Transmission and KPs continued. Soon I started getting them with just running Safari or even Firefox.
Next there was a Mac OS upgrade (10.4.11 and a couple other things) and the machine would not even start up anymore. Always got a grey debug screen with msg to press powerbutton.
Tried doing an archive and install and it failed twice.
Tried doing a clean install (OS only) on external 30GB USB 2.0 HD and it failed as well.
Apple Support and Apple store were clueless.
At least the genius was able to boot with their troubleshooting HD and run Disk Warrior which found a couple minor issues and I was able to see that my data was stull there. Unfortunately the 30gb HD was too small to copy my user folder (86gb).
Went and bought an external 320gb firewire disk and tried to do a clean install and it failed.
Called Apple again and suspected bad DVD media. They sent replacement disks and they failed as well.
Ran Apple Hardware Test and it found bad memory (?) with 2x 1GB Corsair sticks. I even tried them individually. That memory has worked since August 2007 until I started seeing the kernel panics in December. What are the odds of both SODIMMs going bad at the same time ? Could a bad app cause memory to go bad ? I doubt it.
with 2 GB Corsair memory: 4MEM/4/40000000:2c02fd60
Swapped original 2x 512 MB Apple sticks in and AHT found another error.
with 1 GB Apple memory: 4SNS/1/40000000:TAOP
From other forum posts I found that 4MEM usually indicates a memory or system board issue while 4SNS seems to indicate a sensor issue, but that could have been due to unplugged (termal?) cable in front of mini due to the need to swap memory in and out for testing.
    What gives ?
I was however, able to install now on external FW disk and copy my user folder to it as well.
So this indicates a problem with 3rd party mem but there may be something else wrong with mini system board or Apple mem as well.
    TX

    ::UPDATE::
Okay, I eventually got my iMac to start up successfully, without crashing after logging in. But I still thought there was something wrong so I booted from the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with my computer and I got yet ANOTHER Kernel Panic! Here is what it said:

    Hey DjTimmyM,
Thanks for the question. The following resource outlines the best isolation and troubleshooting steps if you encountered a “kernel panic”:

  • Kernel Panic / Blue screen of death on brand new MacBookPro 2.6 GHZ

I thought it was quite normal to get one system crash with a brand new computer (MacBook Pro 2.6GHZ, OS 10.5.1 pre-installed, everything updated) , so I wasn't too worried when it occured yesterday. But now it happened again...
    1. I use Mail and Web browser.
    2. The wireless internet connection goes down. (The connection icon indicates that everything works, but no application can reach out).
    3. The system crashes, after a short while.
The computer is brand new. No Haxies installed. (Quicksilver, is an application, not a haxie, right?)
What is installed: iWork, iLife, DevonThink, MSoffice, Quicksilver, Adium, Adobe CS3, EndNote X1.
Does your new MacBook Pro crash as well?

The system crashed again. Does this look familiar to anyone? Does this look like a hardware or a software problem?

  • G5 "Q87" Dual 2.7GHz - Persistent Kernel Panic

    Hello All,
I have a Power Mac G5 (trusty old pro audio box) which has been experiencing regular Kernel Panics (grey screen of death) for the past month or so.
I'm wondering if it might be the Logic Board or something having to do in particular with either the SATA or memory areas which might be having the trouble.
My G5's specs and latest Kernel Panic report are as follows:
    Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7 GHz "Q87 970fx" model | 8GB | 1TB HD | 10.4.11
RME 9632 PCI based audio interface. (connected to Lexicon PCM 80 via S/PDIF which coincides with the Kernel Panics but may be a coincidence?)
The Kernel Panic mainly happens whenever I save a large group of samples in Native Instruments Kontakt 3.5 or when playing back large (usually orchestral) multi-instrument sample presets in Wave Editor or other audio editing programs. Crashes also occur whenever large audio files (300MB+) are loaded or are being edited/converted.
Can anyone decipher the meaning of the Kernel Panic report? I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.

I ran Rember and there were some test failures. It doesn't look like the program is able to tell me which DIMM is bad so I'll probably have to go by process of elimination, right?
I'm still hoping to find Apple Hardware Test and/or Apple Service Diagnostic for this particular machine and I'll try other memory test programs as well. For anyone who's interested, here are the results of the memory test by Rember. Perhaps someone could tell by looking which DIMM it might be?

  • Help With Kernel Panic in Mid 2012 13" Macbook Pro

    I have a 13" Mid-2012 Macbook Pro.
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 / 8GB Memory
    OS X 10.9.5
Recently I have been getting kernel panics / grey screens of death.  From the Console logs, it appears I have had four kernel panics since September 22.
I am not aware of any particular thing I can do to produce the error.
    Some things I've tried:
Disk Utility (this generally returns no errors.  However, once it asked me to boot to recovery mode to run Disk Utility there)
Disk Utility in recovery mode (No errors)
single user mode fsck -fy (No errors)
Apple Hardware Test, extended mode (No errors)
Observed Console logs for kernel panics (I am not sure how to parse these)
    Other details about the setup/environment:
    No peripherals
I did see one update About the OS X Mavericks v10.9.5 Update that I had not installed until tonight.  Since September 22, I have installed 3 such updates.
    No anti-virus
    Hard drive is mostly empty
    File Vault is on
I hope this is not poor form but I thought I would post some snippets from my kernel panic logs here to help with assessment.    I removed some information that looked like it might include personal identifiers and also the "loaded kexts" portions because of their length.   If those are helpful I could post them.
Any help diagnosing this problem would be appreciated.

Thank you.  below I have included the full panic logs, including kernel extensions.
I did run and pass a memory test last night, but thank you for noting that this may not be conclusive.
Do you see anything else notable in the logs, that would suggest anything other than a memory problem?  What would be the best way to test it?  Last night I used Rember .  Assuming that you don't identify anything else, would the next step be simply memory replacement?
    Logs below.
    Thanks!

Ok, this is an odd issue that I have been having. I tried to wake up my computer today to find that between today and yesterday, it had a Kernel Panic (Grey Screen of Death), I restarted the computer only to have the Kernel panic again not three minutes after restart. So, I figured it was something wrong with my boot disk (mechanical or software) so I put in Drive Genius 2 to test my boot disk. I booted from the DVD but while I was trying to check the boot disk, DG2 had a kernel panic. So, it must be the RAM, right? I have 6 RAM modules, a 2x1GB matched pair and two 2x2GB matched pairs. So, I pulled out the 2x1 pair and restarted into Drive Genius (not by choice, my computer automatically booted into it) but had a kernel panic again. I put that pair back then removed one of the 2x2 pairs, same result. Removed the last 2x2 pair, same result, kernel panic. I went ahead and booted back into my OS so as to retrieve the error report. Update! Just for kicks I swapped the 2x2GB pair that was in the computer at the time of this report with my other 2x2GB pair. It has been a full 20 minutes now with no Kernel Panic. Now, while this would make me think that one of the modules in the pair I just took out is bad, why did DG2 have a kernel panic with this same configuration??? I am confused... Can someone smarter than me tell me what that error report is saying? Thanks...

Apparently, bad RAM. Why DG panicked with that pair out, it might be the other modules are also flaky. Run the Apple Hardware Test program, extended tests, at least twice. If no RAM issues, download and run Rember.

  • Kernel panic after system restore...

I have a network TM drive for my MacBook. I wanted to reformat the computer and restore it, so that I could create a new partition for a Boot Camp Ubuntu install (it wouldn't let me before, as my data was all over the place on the drive and it couldn't move it for some reason).
So anyways, I reformatted the drive and tried to system restore from my install disc. It hung on "calculating disk space required" before the internal hard drive even showed up (at this point, the external hard drive holding my network TM was hooked directly up to the laptop, and it could see that just fine - it was the internal it couldn't see). So I reinstalled OS X instead. Then on first boot from the fresh install, I chose the option to restore from a drive. That didn't work either, as it couldn't find the drive over the network, and when I hooked it up directly it only saw the other partition on the drive (which holds my backup for my Mac Mini, which the hard drive is usually hooked up to). So I rebooted to the startup disc again. This time it would let me restore from the external when it was hooked directly up to the laptop. So I did that, and left it overnight. I came back this morning to the screen saying something like "Backup successful, your computer will now restart to the restored OS."
So I clicked OK and it restarted. To a kernel panic.
And it keeps restarting to a kernel panic. I have no idea what could be wrong. The backup is from last night, right before I reformatted, and the computer worked just fine then. And I ran disk utility off the install disk, and checked both the disk and permissions, and they are both fine.

    DUB wrote:
I'm having the same problem on a macbook pro. I restored the time machine backup to both an external drive, and the computer's home drive, and neither is booting up. Both are giving the kernel panic, grey screen of death. I am using the system restore disk, which is 10.6, and I'm going to try to install the OS from scratch first, and then see if I can restore from there.
It's a bit late now (sorry, I was snoozing ), but you probably don't have to install "from scratch," if you mean erase your internal HD and install Snow Leopard.
If you just Install, you'll get a fresh copy of OSX and your Apple Apps, without disturbing anything else. That will probably work. (But don't forget to install the "combo.")

  • Kernel panics and grey screen on startup

    Hello savvy bunch,
I recently acquired a wonderful little Core Solo mini. My plan was to
run it starting up from a 400GB hard drive in an external FW enclosure
that has another 200GB drive I was going to use for backups. Long
story short, the 400GB drive starting giving me weird Finder problems
and such. Booting from the internal HDD in the mini fixed everything.
Then it started having sudden kernel panics at random moments (I could
be writing an email, browsing on Safari, whatever), after which upon
restart I get an empty grey screen that lasted forever. I tried
several fixes, and the only one that worked was unplugging the FW
enclosure. I erased and fixed both external HDDs, and things calmed
down for a while, but I just had another kernel panic-grey screen
episode, which I solved turning off the FW enclosure.
I remember now that I had similar problems before with the same
enclosure/HDDs and my Quicksilver. Could the problem be the enclosure,
    or the hard drives themselves?
    TIA,

Oh, don't worry, I know and use all the right protocols for mounting and unmounting FW drives. They only get turned off AFTER they are dismounted. Of course now I realize that you wouldn't think so the way I described what I was doing. (That was some lazy writing, I guess.) I also have several external drives in use with several other computers. It's this particular enclosure that seems to be trouble.
As far as brands go, this is some kind of generic two-drive enclosure I got from OWC on a big sale a while back. I cannot find a brand name for the life of me (and I have looked all over it). I have not had a lot of luck with two-drive enclosures. This is my second (the first one was I think a Newertech or some other OWC brand, which died very quickly on me. The HDDs survived and are still in use.)
As for Lacies, Smokerz, you are completely right. My first FW enclosure ever was a Lacie, and it's still going strong. I have my eye on a Lacie 1TB enclosure that's in Newegg for $99...

Hmmm - those logs appear to be for Final Cut crashes - I'm not sure if they are related to kernel panics - where I get the restart message and my whole system freezes.

  • Boot Camp causes Kernel Panics on Startup

    Hi all,
I just purchased a new MBP. I had installed everything and transferred all of my files from my previous notebook (via Time Machine). System was working very well.
I wanted to install a windows partition via boot camp. used Boot Camp Assistant to create a 50GB partition (leaving >200GB of free space on my main partition) for windows 7. Installed this perfectly fine.
Started up OS X again, and was using that for the rest of the day. Played a game in Boot Camp for an hour or so just now. Now, every time I try to boot to my OS X (10.6.4) partition, it kernel panics. Grey curtain of death.
I booted into the backup disc, and repaired the drive using Disk Utility. This found some errors and supposedly fixed them. Permission repair went likewise. Still no luck booting into OS X (but I can use the Windows 7 Ultimate x64 partition just fine).
While trying to resolve this issue, I tried to reinstall OS X over the partition that would not boot up. Erased ONLY that partition and tried to install. Install appeared to work fine, but when not booting from the CD (after the installation finished) it panicked again.
The only way to resolve the issue was to completely repartition the drive and reinstall OS X.
Has anyone else had this problem, and resolved it? I would really like to be able to use boot camp...

I would recommend cloning your system to another drive in addition or instead of using TimeMachine so you have a bootable backup. Also for booting from to run repairs, and if/when you turn to 3rd party disk repair programs like Disk Warrior.
I suspect it has more to do with 10.6.4.
Did you install the Apple SETUP drivers and such in Windows 7? the Boot Camp 3.0.x and 3.1? your OEM DVD has those, and likely has more current than what was provided last year even.
Panics are often external USB cables, devices, RAM, but hardware, and sometimes from drivers. But I doubt it has to do with Windows 7.

  • Kernel panics with Time Machine on TC

I have my TC now for 4 days and I had to quit using Time machine as it now seem to creates a kernel panic every time it creates a back up.
I'm really not very pleased with TC. Since I started the initial back up, with ethernet cable, i've had the windows feeling. Initial Back up failed 4 times before i even got to start Time machine working.
Since 2 days i'm noticing drop outs with the wifi connection, this resulted presumably in a faulty back up because since my last dropped connection every Time machine starts creating a back up I get that grey curtain of death.
If the only solution to getting everything working is again to start all over, ill just stop using Time machine as this little box that should do everything in the background has become the most forefront user experience since I got it.

shouldn't be doing that. Call AppleCare and use your telephone support for Time Capsule

  • Kernel Panic when i attempt to load music/videos

when i try to load any mp3s or movie files onto my ipod, i get the kernel panic screen (4 languages, hold down power blah blah blah)... what can i do to make this not happen?

I am in the same boat as you guys.
I have a 60 gig Black 5G iPod. Loaded primarily with video.
It is syncing to a 10.4.3 iMac G5.
I have been using the iPod trouble free for 2 weeks now. Syncing everyday, removing and adding video. No problems.
Last night I attempted to add a number of videos that would have filled up the device. Once I was syncing the last, or second to last, video and the counter in iTunes showed there was about a gig of space left available on the iPod I would get a Kernel Panic (grey screen, power button, 5 languages, telling me to restart).
This happened twice before I removed a handful of videos to keep the iPod from filling up. This seemed to relieve the problem and the iPod synced like normal.
Otherwise the iPod has been performing as expected, video playback is great, syncing otherwise is fine.
My panic.log is very similar to yours rdstuart

So, a follow up question, anyone reading this thread completely (and I mean completely, save for a few megs) maxed out their 5th gen iPod? 30 or 60 gig qualifies as it seems to occur on both models.
Basically I am trying to determine the root of the problem. Is this a serious hardware problem which would warrant an exchange?
Or possible a problem/flaw in the database structure of the iPod that could be rectified via a firmware update?
Has anyone talked with Apple Tech Support about this issue?
My iPod is absolutely great otherwise, none of the many complaints others in the forum have had, and so if this is just a case of leaving a gig or so free on the iPod until a fix materializes so be it! I would rather avoid an unnecessary exchange if possible.
I just want to avoid major hardware issues downs the line naturally.
Thanks for your help and advice in advance.
