CPU,MEMORY UTILIZATION

hi,
What should be the desirable percentage of cpu and memory utilization

You must gather few stats related to your
-CPU utilization
-memory
-swap space and other system resources and maintain thm for your help so as to set thresholds for your system's optimal utilization and peakloads.
Generally on multiple CPU box its considered 90% CPU utilization for ~15-30 mins is area of consideration,though mometarily spikes are tolerable but should not exceed ~5 mins.This way you can sort out the issue related to CPU ,Memory etc resource utilization.
Hope this could provide you insights of the Utilization

    In virtualization, are virtual CPUs dedicated to guests, or CPU cycles are available on demand. If this is the case, then one guest high utilization can slow down other guests as well.

  • No Video Playback & CPU/Memory Utilization

    I just rendered an M2V out of Premiere Pro CS5 with Adobe Media Encoder. I used the widescreen progressive high quality preset. The M2V plays fine in VLC Media Player.
    When I create a new project and import into Encore CS5, Encore goes nuts and sits on 50% CPU for a long while, while memory utilization by the process goes from 400MB - 1GB in about 8 seconds, and then drops suddenly back to 400MB and then repeats this a number of times before it stops. Then next time I click on almost anything, it does this again.
    When I finally got the M2V in a timeline, it all looks good, but motion video does not play back. The Play button changes to a Pause icon but nothing plays.
    This is a clean install of Windows 7 x64, all latest drivers, and I already tested my memory and it is all good.
    Ideas?

    •Have you gone to the vendor web site to check for a newer driver?
    •For Windows, do NOT rely on Windows Update to have current driver information
    •-you need to go direct to the vendor web site and check updates for yourself

    Hi all,
    In the last few weeks we have been encountering,  Server Re-starts due to  memory Shoots ups.
    We are planning to have alerts for CPU, memory utlizations.
    These would be triggered before a Standard Threshold is reached.  This would avoid issues after threshold in production environment.
    Are there any pointers, blogs etc available on how to achieve the same.
    Thanks in advance,
    Best regards

    Basic alert funtionality of XI won't help. You must have CCMS configured in your landscape. It could be then used to raise alert for such issues. Have a look here

  • How do I get CPU / memory utilization information via the API?

    I can't seem to find anything in the iOS API that would give me information about CPU utilization (user, kernel, idle) and memory (free, pinned, idle, in use), but I see apps like System Activity Monitor in the app store that provide such information. Can anyone point me to the relevant part of the SDK?

  • How to find CPU and Memory Utilization

    Hi,
    How to find CPU and Memory Utilization of my application which is
    running in solaris workstation.My application has a management console in which we need to update the cpu and memory periodically.
    (Notr : Usage of JNI is restrcited)
    Thnx and Rgds,
    Mohan

    There is no CPU usage API in Java. You need some JNI code. For memory usage see the Runtime methods:
         * Get information of memory usage: max, total, free and (available/used).
         * <ul>
         * <li>Max is the maximum amount of bytes the application can allocate (see also java options -Xmx). This value is fixed.
         * If the application tries to allocate more memory than Max, an OutOfMemoryError is thrown.
         * <li>Total is the amount of bytes currently allocated from the JVM for the application.
         * This value just increases (and doesn't decrease) up to the value of Max depending on the applications memory
         * requirements.
         * <li>Free is the amount of memory that once was occupied by the application but is given back to the JVM. This value
         * varies between 0 and Total.
         * <li>The used amount of memory is the memory currently allocated by the application. This value is always less or equal
         * to Total.
         * <li>The available amount of memory is the maximum number of bytes that can be allocated by the application (Max - used).
         * </ul>
         * In brief: used <= total <= max
         * <p>
         * The JVM can allocate up to 64MB (be default) system memory for the application. If more is required, the JVM has to be started with the Xmx option
         * (e.g. "java -Xmx128m" for 128 MB). The amount of currently allocated system memory is Total. As the JVM can't give back unallocated memory
         * to the operating system, Total can just increase (up to Max).
         * @return Memory info.
        static public String getMemoryInfo() {
            StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
            sb.append("Used: ");
            sb.append(toMemoryFormat(getUsedMemory()));
            sb.append(", Available: ");
            sb.append(toMemoryFormat(getAvailableMemory()));
            sb.append(" (Max: ");
            sb.append(toMemoryFormat(Runtime.getRuntime().maxMemory()));
            sb.append(", Total: ");
            sb.append(toMemoryFormat(Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory()));
            sb.append(", Free: ");
            sb.append(toMemoryFormat(Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory()));
            sb.append(")");
            return sb.toString();
        }//getMemoryInfo()

  • Re: memory utilization

    Thanks to all who responded to my question about memory utilization. There
    were some good suggestions that I will follow up on. I am very grateful for
    the help.
    As a general rule, I would agree that memory utilzation problems tend to be
    developer-induced. I believe that is generally true for most development
    environments. However, this developer was having a little trouble finding
    out how NOT to induce them. After scouring the documentation for any
    references to object destructors, or clearing memory, or garbage collection,
    or freeing objects, or anything else we could think of, all we found was how
    to clear the rows from an Array object. We did find some reference to
    setting the object to NIL, but no indication that this was necessary for the
    memory to be freed.
    It is my understanding that in this environment, the development tool
    (Forte') claims to handle memory utilization and garbage collection for you.
    If that is the case, then it is my opinion that it shoud be nearly
    impossible for the developer to create memory-leakage problems without going
    outside the tool and allocating the memory directly. If that is not the
    case, then we should have destructor methods available to us so that we can
    handle them correctly. I know when I am finished with an object, and I
    would have no problem calling a "destroy" or "cleanup" method. In fact, I
    would prefer that to just wondering if Forte' will take care of it for me.
    It seems to me that this is a weakness in the tool that should be addressed.
    Does anyone else have any opinions on this subject?

    Index rebuild = Drop and recreate, this complete recreated index will be in the memory till completion of the full operation.
    The lazy writer process periodically checks the available free space in the buffer cache between two checkpoints. If a dirty data page (a page read and/or modified) in the buffer hasn’t been used for a while, the lazy writer flushes it to disk and then marks
    as free in the buffer cache
    If SQL Server needs more memory and the buffer cache size is below the value set as the Maximum server memory parameter for the SQL Server instance, the lazy writer will take more memory
    If SQL Server is under memory pressure, the lazy writer will be busy trying to free enough internal memory pages and will be flushing the pages extensively. The intensive lazy writer activity affects other resources by causing additional physical disk I/O activity
    and using more CPU resources
    To provide enough free space in the buffer, pages are moved from the buffer to disk. These pages are usually moved at a check point, which can be:
    automatic (occurs automatically to meet the recovery interval request)
    indirect (occurs automatically to meet the database target recovery time)
    manual (occurs when the CHECKPOINT command is executed)
    internal (occurs along with some server-level operations, such as backup creation)
    At a checkpoint, all dirty pages are flushed to disk and the page in the buffer cache is marked for overwriting
    “For performance reasons, the Database Engine performs modifications to database pages in memory—in the buffer cache—and does not write these pages to disk after every change. Rather, the Database Engine periodically issues a checkpoint on each database. A
    checkpoint writes the current in-memory modified pages (known as dirty pages) and transaction log information from memory to disk and, also, records information about the transaction log.”

  • CiscoWorks LMS 4.0.1 High Memory Utilization on Windows 2K8 R2

    Hi,
    What causes LMS 4.1 to have high memory utilization?

    I made a little batch
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-21031
    It show what process in LMS is eating you RAM / Hogging the CPU.
    I don't think resources are used very effectivly in LMS
    I did have the impression that some virtual machines running LMS 3.2 actually performed better than real machines, as if the VMware saw it load all these java virtual machines and that it was 45 times the same thing only being used for a few % and therefore could be swapped to disk, leaving the resources to what was actually working in LMS.
    What worries me more than the resources used is the gui per.formance.
    Cheers,

  • Memory Utilization during XML Parsing - Response time is high

    Slow response time while xml parsing is done.
    Description of the problem:
    During XML parsing, memory is used and discarded so frequently that garbage collection
    is occurring multiple times per minute, impacting performance. In order to better
    understand the source of the memory usage issue, we used JProbe Memory Debugger.
    JProbe Memory Debugger was run in Aggregate mode in order to determine which classes
    were using the most total or aggregate memory (the sum of the memory required
    to instantiate not just a given object, but all the objects it uses.) The result
    was that weblogic.apache. xerces.impl.xs.dom.DocumentImpl and weblogic.apache.xerces.jaxp
    comprise 23.8% and 15.4%, respectively, of total memory on a heap of 121MB. In
    additional tests, the larger the heap, the greater these percentages were.
    This results in slow response time.
    The following are the details of software and Hardware configurations used:
    Server: weblogic 8.1
    OS: Solaris 8

    Sorry, I overlooked it.
    yes we do have 8 GB RAM. And as far as xml usage, we are parsing the xml to DOM
    (including validation) and then applying transformation. But its the parsing stuff
    which is eating the memory.1. Can you run JProbe to find out real CPU utilization/bottlenecks?
    2. Apache Xerses implementation that is used in weblogic has a design
    flaw that results in serialization of memory allocation by the transformer,
    that makes it impossible to use for intense multithreaded transformations.
    Consider using other transformers.

    Thanks Slava for youe response. Coming back to response time, thisprocess is part
    of a big task. So i cant really tell what response time i can allocatejust for
    this piece alone. Might be, roughly it should be less than 0.4 seconds.what the
    major concenr is the memory utilization by these packages. So whatmakes it to
    use this kind of memory and whether its a known issue ?

    Large heap means longer garbage collections. Anyway, DOM is very heavy
    on memory and you can not escape it. What's is your usage patternfor
    XML

    This results in slow response time.What do you consider as acceptable/inacceptable responce time?

  • Switch Memory Utilization

    Hi
    what is the standard range for memory utilization on 35xx switches.
    I know under minimal load they can be around 50% but what would be classed as a problem?
    Most of mine are between 60% - 90% is this normal?
    thanks

    Hi,
    With 3500xl's, the load minimum with 50% is OK.If I were you, I would have tried setting up the SPAN on switch and tried capture the traffic passing over the switch.
    Link for SPAN config: http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c2900xl/29_35wc5/scg/swports.htm#xtocid25
    If the CPU utilization is more than 50% and there is no unusal traffic on the LAN, you might be hitting CSCdv21552.

  • CPU memory increasing

    Hi Every one,
    we got an typical problem in our production Publisher instances(CQ 5.5) where CPU memory is getting increased to 60% in particular window 2 times a day. when we gone through log files we found that there are lot of index files, bundles version files, tar files getting generated. the path where it is getting generated is shown below
    crx-quickstart\repository\workspaces\crx.default\index \...
    crx-quickstart\launchpad\felix\ .....
    crx-quickstart/repository/tarJournal/..
    we googled and found apache Lucane indexing files will be stored under index folder (point 1 above),
    Apache Felix Framework Bundle Cache is stored under launchpad\felix (point 2) AND Tar Persistance Manager is responsible for tar files generation.
    what we dont understand is when CQ initiates this processes to run i.e., start indexing, start taking Bundle Cache, run tar persistance manager. Also we want to understand is there any link between all the three like on tar optimization running others like indexing and Bundle cache will be effected?
    please let me know your response.

    Hi Jorg,
    We have a problem somewhat related to the above mentioned. We expect that our problem is around indexs and way CQ5.4 use indexes to refer to data from repository.
    1) Does CQ allow reading different branches of a tree parallely?
    2) Our application read different branches of tree using multiple threads (102) and we observe that it takes 30% more time when compared to reading whole tree using a single thread.
    3) When we profile application it indicates that our threads run mutually exclusive. Memory (heap) usage is around 40% of total memory & CPU utilization is around 17% on an average basis and it oscillates between (10-40%) and never exceeds 40%. From application perspective we just kick off all threads using executor service and continue processing as each thread returns.
    4) We will run this application somewhere between 15 & 20 times a day. Our observation is that 1st run of the day takes 50% more time when compared to subsequent runs. And it happens very consistently. We simulate this by re-starting the whole CQ application.
    5) Now the problem gets more interesting, we changed settings in repository.xml to keep index in memory. For this we need to re-start our application twice. Once without index in memory (midnight) so that all index merging completes and then in the morning (8am) we will re-start our application with index in memory. Our whole CQ application will take 30 minutes to start without index in memory & it takes 7mintues to start with index in memory. But when we run our application takes almost double the amount of time(4.5hrs) to complete with index in memory when compared to 2.5hrs without index in memory.
    Note :- All the details above are facts from testing without XIV SSD Cache which gets introduced now.
    6) We have newly introduced XIV SSD cache (6TB) from IBM, which sits, on top of our SAN disks. This is a persistent cache and 80-90% of total hits, get data from this cache. When we run our application with index in memory it takes 4.5 hours to complete, but when we run our application with out index in memory it takes 1.3 hours to complete.
    We are clueless now and thinking that way CQ5.4 manages indexes is the problem.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Harry.

    Hi guys,
    Another Rman issue. I´m making hotbackups (oracle 10gR1 - linux) and I can see a high CPU utilization during RMAN backup. like 98% CPU in use during backup. Is it normal ? is there any documentation regarding cpu and memory use during rman backups ?
