CPU noise thru FIREWIRE Audio devide M-audio410

Hello,
I get a very strong resonance problem on a 2x2 PCIX G5 with a M-audio firewire 410 soundcard. Has anyone encountered such problem?
I know the resonance problem sometimes appears on the built in output due to bad isolation.
I've tried the audiocard on a different G5 (2x2 pci) and on a ibookG4900, i get the same problem but it's very low, you can only hear it when the level is raised crazy high, i asked some friends who owns the 410 and it seems a natural behavior for most of them.
But on mine it's very high and i can' really work. I've off course tried everything regarding electricity (isolation, protected plug, different location home, studio...), nothing helped...it was also doing it on previous os (10.4 to 10.4.6)...
anyone has a clue?
Best
K

One would think there wouldn't be much difference in heat/fans... unless the i7 was being pushed beyond what the i5 is doing the same job, in any case, the i5 should be faster than what you're using now...

  • Internal computer noise with firewire audio devices

    Hello
I have a Power Mac G5 PPC 2.3 and Mac Os X 10.5.6, with tiger I have the same problem too, I bougnt my Mac for audio work, and from the purchase day, I have the same problem, I bought my first audio sound card, M-Audio Firewire 1814, and I installed the last drivers for my operating system, when I start Logic I must go to prefferences audio and select the device, I select coreaudio tab and M-Audio Firewire 1814, and when I click on apply changes, in the Mac start an internal noise, low level, and hign frecuency, and this sound keep while logic is open or another audio aplication with M-Audio 1814 is selected like audio device like Pro Tools M-Powered.
Aplications work fine but this noise I think is a conflict with audio device drivers, I can hear this sound too when I go Aplications/Utilities/Audio Midi Setup/ and in the audio devices tab the internal noise not is sounding but when I click on Midi devices tab, the internal noise start and is sounding while Audio Midi Setup is Open, if I quit Audio Midi Setup the noise stop.
In the Activity monitor I can read MIDI Server process is launched when I click on MIDI Tab, and if I select and close this process the noise stop.
It is only for the noise when is sounding with audio midi setup, close MIDI Server and noise stop, but when the noise is with any application (Logic or Pro Tools) in the activity monitor quit MIDI Server process but the noise keep sounding.
I have Digi 003 Rack and Pro Tools LE too, and I have the same problem when Pro Tools LE start.
If I select M-Audio 1814 in system prefferences/Audio, like audio device and open ITunes the noise is not sounding with ITunes, I can listen music whithout problems, but If I select Digi 003 Rack like Audio Device in
System Prefferences/Audio The noise is sounding with ITunes start becouse Digi Core Audio Driver is launched.
I think is a conflict between Thirty Parts Drivers and The System but I need help, what can I do to resolve this.
    Thanks

Nope, someone elsewhere suggested a thing called "ground loop" occurring. Meaning, the interference from the electric current. They suggested trying it with battery power (power detached), and without. But at least for me, made no difference unfortunately.

  • Noise through firewire audio device 27" iMac

I am using ProTools 9 with the MBox Pro audio interface (8in - 8out).  I am experiencing an intolerable noise floor that I have narrowed down to coming from the firewire port itself off my new iMac i7 27' with 8G RAM with the 2G graphics. I have not even received my Apple Care package yet; that is how new we are talking!!
Note that I tested against my MacBook Pro which is impressively quiet (all references to "quiet & noise" have to do with the firewire output), and exhibits none of these symptoms: The iMac powers up/boots and a few clicks can be heard while it locks in with the MBox. There is an almost immediate faint high-pitched whine that can be heard, very faint unless you were to turn the volume up, but something like the sound you would hear on a video taken from an airplane. Once ProTools opens, or any program that has some meat on the bones, the whine boosts up even louder.  This time it is an unacceptable "not good for business" noise. If you scroll the dock, or move the arrow across the dock, it sounds like white noise you would hear as if thumbing through stations on an AM radio.... and truthfully, because it is coming from my now questionable investment, way worse than an AM radio. This "dirt" coming from my firewire port is so strong, even after turning the Mbox off, this noise is bleeding right on through to my mixer anyway - even the AM radio noise when scrolling!
If you let the computer sit at a modest volume, once the screen saver kicks in, every picture that comes up has it's own noise, sort of like you're hearing voltage spikes from a utility transformer... so I am wondering if this could be a bad graphics card since it seems closely related to what changes on the screen? Anyone who is having these sound issues, please share.  Last note: None of these conditions changed with relocation of my monitor speakers, new cords, screen resolution adjustment, or monitor brightness adjustments.

" So make no mistake, this is an issue that should be taken into consideration by Apple to address and initiate corrections in the electronics/power supply/materials or perhaps the internal design.
My follow-up post was an explanation of how I resolved the issue, but for the price, most who experience this will feel should have been resolved before their iMac was even assembled."
    James230,
I have to say I do not agree with this comment.
Apple can not be made accountable for electrical systems that are not up to today's standards and codes and causing noise on your power line.
You state in your second post that the power in your area as no Earth ground and that the ground prong of your house's electrical system is grounded on conduit.
In the end grounding to conduit is the same as grounding to earth since the water intake for your house IS in the ground so all pipes connected to it are acting as a ground to earth.
The problem is that there is so much stuff connected to the water pipes, like a water heater, kitchen sink, washing machine, etc. that can create interferences, and make it a very noisy ground.
"like the battery back-up, the AC connected to it is simply charging the battery but the actual power running the laptop is through the battery.."
    Not true.
The UPS solution you used is the right thing to do, but not because of the battery.
The battery in a UPS is NOT powering your equipment when you have normal electrical power on. It will only be used when the power goes out.
Same thing goes for your laptop, the battery will only be used when it is not getting power from a wall outlet.
The electricity is powering your power supply which is powering your laptop and charging your battery as needed.
Remove the battery from your laptop and it will still run from power from a wall outlet.
You are getting a cleaner ground because most decent UPS devices available today are equipped with power conditioning and noise filtering circuits that will eliminate most of the noise created by inadequate grounding.
Also note that using a ground lift like you first suggested is not only dangerous for your equipment but could also be seen as "abnormal conditions" that could be used as a reason by any equipment maker to void the warranty on their equipment if a electrical problem was found to be the cause of damages.
They could say: "Sorry, your equipment was not properly grounded, so we are not covering these repairs."

  • Firewire drive noise appearing in audio output

    Hi:
When I have a firewire drive plugged in, a lot of digital noise appears at the audio output jack. If I turn the drive off, I hear a whining-down noise in the audio output. I've tried two different drives, 3 different cables, same thing. Anyone have any ideas? It's a huge bummer; I bought my MacBook Pro to do music on...

    Hey george,
i know this is not going to be any help, (i need some too!!!) but i have exactly the same problem. I first noticed it when using my ICY BOX external harddrive and thought it was just the noise from the external drive but the same thing happens when i attach my Motu traveler firewire soundcard to it. Its so annoying. the sound dissapears when i take out the mini jack from the output.
I am also having a problem of sound distortion over the output and recording input when i attach my Motu firewire unit
(this is seperate from the minijack problem i think as this happens when the minijack is plugged into the output AND when it is not).
This didnt happen to my powerbook 1.6 and never happens to my friends one either????
I am going to make a seperate thread about this problem now but if you could tell me if you have the same problem with your soundcard i would be grateful.
All the best and if you find out what the problem is please post your solutio up, vice versa.
    Will.

  • 10.4.11 external firewire audio device noise/distortion

    Hi
Subsequent to upgrading to 10.4.11 I now have persistent noise from my external firewire audio device. It's an Edirol FA-101 and worked perfectly in 10.4.10 and earlier. I tried replacing the firewire cable with no effect.
The FA-101 is a class compliane device so uses Apples built in firewire audio drivers.. has anyone else had firewire audio problems with 10.4.11?
    Thanks
    Mark

No I doubt it... FW can be strange sometimes.
Look in Sytem Profiler, if it says you don't have FW at all, then remove all power from the iMac, let it set a few hours to Drain down, plug back in everthing.

  • Very Faint Signal from Mic Running thru M-Audio Firewire Solo

I get a very faint signal running a condenser mic thru M-Audio Firewire Solo to GB. 1/4 guitar input in Solo records fine. Solo is selected as input in system preferences. All gain and recording levels are maxed. Any ideas?

It's a tube mic so it has its own power source/brick.  I've tested the mic with just its power source and its working great.

  • Firewire audio consumes lots of CPU

I have an external Edirol FA-66 firewire audio capture device. Plugging it in and switching it on sends kernel_task to 15-20% CPU usage immediately. That seems a bit excessive to me, can we expect the driver to be improved eventually?
I tried to use the Edirol device as a second stereo output with DJ-1800, but the high CPU usage (and probably some other bugs in the driver and in DJ-1800) led to lots of audio dropouts and made it unusable.

I too have a similar problem except I think mine is flash related. It's fine when just surfing and watching news/videos but when I play a flash game the hard drive starts spinning constantly and it takes minutes to switch applications or shut the game down. This usually happens at the beginning of a flash game, settles down for a while, and after 45-60 minutes it starts up again but the hard drive keeps spinning for another 15-30 minutes then settles down again for an even shorter amount of time and then repeats the cycle. It started doing this to me in firefox 6, but I've since upgraded to 7.0.1 and flash is up to date. I've run all the malware/virus checks, tested the drive, but can not find anything wrong. If I manage to get the resource monitor running, firefox plugin container usually is reading my pagefile.sys at 40-50 million bytes/min, plus a few more firefox entries running in the low millions/min. I know flash is a memory pig but I have 2 gig memory plus the virtual memory which I tried a couple of custom settings and then set back to default, with no change in performance

  • High pitch squeal related to Firewire audio device after 10.6.2 audio patch

So the recent Mac Pro audio update 1.0 (applied on 10.6.2) has reduced my CPU temperature with audio playback (Presonus Firebox Firewire audio interface) and that is great. Also haven't had any machine crashes (grey screens) recently which is also great.
The problem is that when the Firebox is plugged into the firewire port of the Mac Pro there is a constant high pitched whistle of slightly oscillating frequency. If I unplug the Firebox the whistle goes away in a few seconds.
After prolonged use in a quiet room (the kind of room you need for audio recording / mixing work!) the noise is enough to drive me crazy.
I read a post on another forum with other people having the same problem. Can anyone comment here on seeing the same thing? Is there any known work around or fix for this?
When the CPU is under heavy load (e.g. H.264 compression etc.) the noise subsides only to return when there is normal load (i.e. half a dozen apps running).
    Help!
    Thanks

So I was able to back out the update using "Kext Helper b7" and the original IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext and AppleHDA.kext files from a backup before applying the update. It's pretty easy - just drop the two files onto Kext Helper, hit "go" and then reboot.
My ears are no longer in constant pain and I can actually use the Mac Pro again albeit running quite hotter than before.
This is not a fix Apple. The problem looks unrelated to a specific device based on the posts in this thread. Please issue a usable fix for the Mac Pro Audio performance issue.

  • FireWire Audio Heat Problem (Macbook Pro, Late 2008) VIDEO proof

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYHnX3CGUoo
After a lot of hours of trying to figure out WHY my macbook pro heats up (a lot) when i connect my newly bought Apogee Duet firewire audio interface, i found out that actually what was happening is that there are CPU spikes of extremely short period (so short that Activity Monitor and iStat could not catch) constantly spiking the CPU frequency from 1596Mhz (Idle) to 2572Mhz (Maximum). Apart from the frequency spike there is also a VOLTAGE spike from 1.0v to 1.15.
I know that this is normal due to speedstep technologies and such BUT the rapid spiking and alterations of frequency and voltage ALWAYS happening when i have my Firewire audio plugged is not normal to me. There is nothing else running, everything's idle and i only plug the firewire interface.
Also this is not happening when i restrict OSX from loading AppleFWAudio.kext (either by deleting, moving, renaming it). I connect the firewire audio interface, the leds are illuminating but no heat problem (thats to show you that is not because the interface is self-powered)
Whats going on seems to be similar with the problems occurred after Mac Pro Audio Update to users that was using FW audio devices. They were hearing a sine noise coming from their macpro and propably that was because the same thing was happening. Constant spikes of voltage to the CPU. I dont have a macpro thought so i cant apply the update Apple released for that issue.
Also, my macbook is using Lucent / Agere (LSI) firewire chipset (the particular and known revision 6) but i dont think that this is the cause since Apogee didnt have any problems with the chipset
Info: The app im using to monitor the Frequency and Voltage is CoolBook, can be found here: http://www.coolbook.se/CoolBook.html

Firewire Audio disconnected / or AppleFWAudio.kext unloaded = Idle temp arround 50 celcius (iStat)
Firewire Audio Connected with AppleFWAudio.kext loaded = Idle temp arround 60 celcius (iStat)
If theres a possibility that this is due to bus powered firewire device (cause i have an external FW hard drive that is self-powered and temps are not rising when i connect it) then AppleFWAudio.kext maybe manages something with bus powered firewire.
Maybe when i have the interface connected but the kext not loaded the mA sucked by the interface are too little for causing a temp rise but by the time the kext is loaded and the interface is converting audio the mA required tops up so the temp rise comes from the mA load on the firewire bus and not the cpu itself.
*Even if that's the case, the rapid spikes of throttling on the cpu by the time the Firewire Audio interface is connected bothers me. This isn't something that should normaly happen on an idling machine.*

  • My system can't detect Videocam thru firewire

I have tried to connect my videocam to my PC thru firewire.
After connect, I on my Videocam (set to video mode) but XP can't detect any new device. ???
I have tried lugging the 6 pin firewire to the back of the CPU and also onto the optional IEEE 1394 connectors using the IEEE1394 bracket.
I have check the BIOS and the IEEE1394 is ENABLED.
When I view the network connection under LAN or High-Speed Internet, the 1394 connection shown
    Connected, Firewired
    1394 Net adaptor
    My Videocam is JVC GR-D270.
I currently do not have any software to capture the video other than window movie maker.
Appreciate if someone can advise on how to go abt this problem.

  • Lot of noise from laptop audio output

I'm getting a lot of noise from the audio output of my Macbook Pro (early 2008) OS 10.8.5 when I connect an external firewire 800 drive that uses a power cord. I get more of the same noise when I connect an external video monitor. The noise is a digital hashy and whiney sound that modulates sometimes as what on the screen changes. If I use my Focusrite Scarlett interface the noise is amplified to the point that I can't work. The noise starts when the drive's power cord is plugged in. If I work off a pocket USB drive there is no noise. This is my work around for now. I'm using a power strip that has noise filtering. I have 2 different studios and I get the same noise in both. I've done a lot of trouble shooting and have narrowed the problem down to connecting a drive with a power cord to the computer. I have tried different drives too with the same result. Is there any hope of fixing this?

Can't say I've ever had any noise when starting the unit up over optical - if your DAC is designed for stereo only then it may be causing noise by attempting to play the 5.1 startup video's audio bitstream which is dolby digital encoded not stereo.

I'm struggling to get an answer on this anywhere... I have Logic Pro running 5.1 Surround Mixes on a g5, using a Metric Halo Mobile IO Firewire audio interface - its 6 analog outs are connected to a M Audio LX4 powered surround system. It all works great - until... the problem is when I need to listen to DVDs with 5.1 soundtracks (for reference), or even HD trailers (with 5.1 soundtracks). With the Mobile IO selected as audio interface, DVDs only play in stereo. I think this is because the 5.1 soundtrack is only output thru the optical out - but connecting the optical out to the Mobile IO and selecting 'Digital out' on the g5 brings silence.. Im told this is because the MIO's optical in wont decode 5.1. I'm interested to hear from anyone with a Pro Audio interface - like a MOTU etc - who needs to switch between mixing their own music in 5.1 and then listening to DVDs in 5.1.. I cant be the first, surely?
Plantwebguy said he solved his issue with VLC. Do we know if VLC willl decode 5.1 and then output it to the Interface via Firewire? I've searched the net for a Pro Audio interface with (1) 6 analog outs & mic inputs etc (2) firewire connection and (3) optical in that reads AC3/5.1 etc (rather than just ADAT).... nada. Sorry to be long-winded but I cant get a solution anywhere..

  • TC Electronics Konnekt 8 Firewire Audio problems

    Hey Everyone:
I've been experiencing problems with my Konnekt 8 Firewire audio interface since I purchased it. I've been getting audio dropouts on my output while recording with GarageBand 4. On top of that, I've been experiencing the odd click noise while recording. After months of reading/posting on TC Electronics forums (and other firewire audio forums), I get the sense that this might not be a audio interface driver issue. It might be an Apple Firewire Core Audio issue. Am I correct? I'm on OSX 10.4.11. I've read mostly leopard users have these audio problems, but is the latest and greatest tiger core audio driver the same as leopards?

"But it just seems like many firewire audio devices aren't working as advertised on OS X these days."
Who is doing the advertising and which products?
No matter what product you are buying or platform that you are buying the product for Google is often your friend.
The point that I was making about the TC Electronics Konnekt 8 Firewire Audio device is that all users, even on Windows, are experiencing problems.
One of the musician's laments is that often operating systems such as OSX will be updated and the manufacturer of an external device will not upgrade their drivers in a timely manner if at all. Having no cash to buy new equipment said musician often operates old hardware in order to stay compatible.

  • USB Vs FIREWIRE AUDIO INTERFACES?

what is the advantage of having a firewire audio interface over a usb audio interface?
I have a Edirol UA-25 USB Audio interface and am going to be using it with my new macbook pro that i have just ordered!
I just want to know if this interface would work fine with logic on a macbook pro? or would it reduce performance coz its USB and not Firewire? and buy how much? whats the difference?
    Thanks for your help
    John

Basically, USB won't allow you to go with buffer settings as low as Firewire. That means you will have more latency with USB than with FW. Some drivers are more CPU intensive than others but I can't say this is a USB thing only. The first Yamaha MLAN drivers were terrible even if MLAN uses FW. I don't think USB or FW have an impact on tracks count.
    Sorry for the double post.

  • FireWire Audio static

This is kind of a reverse post, in which I've found the solution and wanted to share my findings.
I have an Edirol FA-101, and (after not using it for a while) tried to use it and consistantly got static over the output. (not sure if the behaviour is new to 10.5.7)
(using firewire 400 to the interface, and optical channels 9-10 to a receiver)
the only way i could find to get rid of the static was to open the audio midi setup, under Audio Output click the drop down of the channel/bitrate (to the right of Format:) and click the option... it then magically plays clean.
not sure where fault lies in this one, but it drove me nuts.

I've seen this issue on several IntelMac edit stations when FCP 6 was first released on through v6.0.2. Just to compare, the problem I've witnessed is that the Firewire audio out will suddenly be nothing but digital garbage; distorted, garbled, scratchy noise. Changing the audio routing to the internal speakers results in normal audio, but as soon as you change it back to Firewire (or Audio Follows Video), nothing but garbage again.
AFAIK, trashing preferences has always worked ... keep us informed on what you find out.
