Oracle Critical Patch Update October 2009
Dear Oracle customer,
The Critical Patch Update for October 2009 was released on October 20, 2009. Oracle strongly recommends applying the patches as soon as possible.
The Critical Patch Update Advisory is the starting point for relevant information. It includes the list of products affected, pointers to obtain the patches, a summary of the security vulnerabilities for each product suite, and links to other important documents. Supported products that are not listed in the "Supported Products and Components Affected" section of the advisory do not require new patches to be applied.
Also, it is essential to review the Critical Patch Update supporting documentation referenced in the Advisory before applying patches, as this is where you can find important pertinent information.
The Critical Patch Update Advisory is available at any of the following locations:
Oracle Technology Network: http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/security/alerts.htm
Oracle, PeopleSoft and JD Edwards products: https://metalink3.oracle.com/od/faces/secure/km/BrowseResults.jspx?fid=15948.1
The next four Critical Patch Update release dates are:
January 12, 2010
April 13, 2010
July  13, 2010
October 12, 2010

• Oracle CPU Jan 2009 cause performance issue

I did installed Oracle CPU Jan 2009 on HP-UX machine. But once the installation is completed, users complaint saying that it takes more than 1 minutes to open a new ticket on that application. With this, it cause a backlog processess increase tremendously.
Will the CPU Jan 2009 patch cause any of the network performance issue:
Server: HP-UX Itanium 64 bit
Database: Oracle 10.2.0.3.0
Instances: 2 instances running on this server.

I believe the latest CPU Patch for Oracle 10.2.0.3 on HP is CPU Jan 2009 only.Don't you think your database should be on 10.2.0.4?
Anyways, do you have any benchmark statspack/AWR report? Can you compare that with the latest one? Do you see any difference?
Regards,
S.K.

Since 10.2.0.4 has been release much before the CPU patch you're talking about, the patchset does not include it. You'll have to install the CPU separately.
By the way, why stopped on CPUOCT2009 and not go for the latest one CPUJAN2009 ?
Since CPU are cumulatives, you could install only the latest one.

• CPU Jul 2009 applied to a 10.2.0.4 DB. getting ORA-01418

Hi all
I have a question about the latest Database CPU patch
I have just applied it to our UAT system and I am getting the following error in the log file generated.
SQL> alter index xdb.xdbhi_idx rebuild;
alter index xdb.xdbhi_idx rebuild
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01418: specified index does not exist
In the read me doc ORA-01418 is not mentioned as an ignorable error
any ideas?
Patch number is 8559466
DB is running on a windows environment.
PS I have have a look though meta link was unable to find anything.

Thanks you for your reply
I have checked and the index does not actually exist,
+SQL> select * from dba_indexes where index_name='XDBHI_IDX'
2 /
no rows selected+
However this does not mean the issue has been resolved/can be ignored
as its creation could have been a part of the CPU Patch.
I have checked another very similar DB where the patch was applied yesterday. and ran the query and the index does exist.

• Performance issues with unibody Macbook Pro 2009 purchased in October 2009

I have a 3.0Ghz Macbook Pro 15" which came installed with Snow Leopard.
I specified the machine with a 7200rpm 500GB drive although I had heard there were issues with these drives. I have installed Office 2008, CS/3, firefox, chronosync and fusion 3.0.
Since I have had the machine it has got slower and slower. Which surprises me given the configuration and the fact that I have 8GB of RAM. It should be quick.
I notice that it has become even slower since downloading a 'performance update' via software update which I installed when software update told me it was available yesterday, October 28th.
Has anyone else experienced the same problem? I also notice that these machines run very hot. I have read a lot of discussion which says that using Vista under fusion can make the machine run very hot. I have tried quitting fusion to see if the performance is any better and the machine still runs very hot and the performance is still awful.
To say that I am disappointed in such an expensive machine not performing properly is an understatement. I have a MacPro which apart from a graphics card replaced under warranty has never misbehaved itself.
I am not sure what all this 'Apple fanboy' nonsense is about - as far as I can see Apple with the notebook line seem to be releasing products which purport to be very advanced but in reading through the forums there seem to be nothing but problems with them.

Yeah, I was kinda worried since it is new. I thought maybe I could somehow adjust the brightness on the screen to make the bottom and corners brighter. And perhaps it was a software issue that was causing the keyboard to malfunction. And definitely have no clue about the headphone jack noises. And the bent display. Hmmm. I guess I will call AppleCare.

• HT204319 I have a MacBook that I bought in October 2009, its current operating system is Mac OS X 10.6.8. I would like to purchase an Printmaster from the app store but it requires 10.7.3 or later. ????? What can I do?

I would like to purchase an app but it requires an operating system of OS X 10.7.3 or later and I only have 10.6.8 What do I need to do? Can I get that on my MacBook?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard — Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service — this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

• FIOS NYC FIOS 1 Update and others ?? October 2009 Update

Any one know about if FIOS1 will have a channel in NYC ? Im tiold the end of the year , anyone have an update ?
I hear FIOS Digital Voice will launch in NY on Sept 30 .
Awaiting also news on MSG HD and MSG + HD and whether or not it will be on FIOS and will be a factor of me going back to Verizon or staying with Time Warner Cable as I await their Mobile services for NY in 2010 .
Already have VOIP with TWC, 4 NY RSN HD, NY 1, NY 1 (Staten Island Programming) and Staten Island Local Programming . Missing is mobile

It has definitely nothing to do with the card. As I said, I had successfully imported all photos from the camera in mid October, added locations, watched a diashow and published an album of that event on MobileMe.
One thing I remember: Two weeks ago I had the MacBook at a friend's place, importing a couple of photos just for a diashow. After the show I closed the MacBook (very likely) without quiting iPhoto and put it back into the bag. Maybe the library got corrupted at this point? Maybe iPhoto was still writing data during the shutdown, or something.
For documentaion sake: I have deleted the corrupted album in Photo yesterday. Emptying the trashbin afterwards made iPhoto (and eventually the entire OS) freezing again, so I had to manually kill and restart iPhoto. After restarting iPhoto the trashbin contained a couple of placeholders and photos of the corrupted album. Emptying the trashbin worked fine the second time.
How can I check the entire library for data integrity?
Why on earth is the entire OS freezing for minutes when Finder is trying to read a corrupted image file? There should be presented an error message to the user immediately.

• Oracle CPU OCTOBER 2011 patch

Hello,
question regarding the Oracle CPU Oct 2001 pach on oracle 10g 10.2.0.5 version on windows 32 bit. in the readme instructios there is step for post installation for database instances to add an event to fix the bug 8298501 to the init.ora file. is this to RAC systems or any single database sevvers? could any one clarify this please? do we have to add this event to the init.ora file at all?
Please shed some lignt....
Thanks a lot...

If there are no conditions stated in the README, I would assume this would apply both single instance and RAC installations.

• October 2009 Screenshots

Posting Guidelines
* DO NOT post full resolution screenshots!  You can use the "mogrify" command (pacman -S imagemagick) to make a thumbnail of your screenshot:
$ cp screenie.png thumb-screenie.png
$ mogrify -resize 20% thumb-screenie.png
Twenty percent of the original size is great for 1024x768 screenies.  You can then upload these images to your server and use the following code to show them on the forum:

* Several websites also offer free image hosting. Here are some that supports thumbnails:
ImageShack | xs.to | iPICTURE | Omploader | ImageHosting | Imagebam
*** Screenshot changed. The old one was with "Error 404 - Not Found"" ***
Use the "Thumbnail for forums" link code that is supplied by the image hosting sites to post your thumbnail link.
* Once the new month begins please do not post new screenies in the old threads.
* If the screenshot has questionable material that might not be safe to view while at work or in a school setting, please post only a link and not a thumbnail, along with a mention of "Not Safe for Work". Posts that do not adhere to this are subject to deletion without notice at any time.
* Please try to include any links to your wallpaper or configs that you may have and/or the names of your icon theme, running apps, DE, etc. in the same post to reduce unnecessary clutter later.

• 2.7 GHz Dual CPU PPC G5 Startup Problems

New, ongoing problems with my Early 2005 G5 (typing this on my old G3):  Boot process suddenly no workee. If I reset the PMU, and then reset PRAM, it will boot normally. But attempt to restart or reboot subsequently will result in (a) black screen, (b) Apple logo but no "rotating gear," or (c) random boot success but a cursor freeze very soon after.  DIY troubleshooting:  1) Running Apple Hardware Test from Mac OS X v 10.4 installation disc indicates a failure of the CPU "B" AD7417, Ref Desig AD1. (Temperature of CPU B displays as -35.7°C using Marcel Bresink's "Hardware Monitor." CPU A indicates an expected temperature of 50°C at idle.) This has been the case since 2010, but computer has always acted normally until about a week ago.  2) Running TechTool Pro v 4.1.3 from second internal HD on primary shows no failures during any test.  3) Running Disk Warrior v 3.0.3 showed no problems.  4) Same startup failures occur when the Tiger installation disc is selected as the startup disc.  5) Once the system fails to boot, attempting startup without resetting PMU (i.e. attempting to reset only the PRAM first) will not produce a second chime, although I get the first chime. PRAM battery (3.6 volt Lithium) measures 3.68 volts out of circuit and is only about 1 year old.  6) Took the G5 to the local Apple Genius bar, where they kept it for about 4 days and reported that the "ASD" (Apple System Diagnostics) procedure recommended to replace the CPU assembly ("or if that didn't work to replace the Logic Board"). I found that "diagnosis" unhelpful and retrieved my G5 from them not repaired ($900+ for CPU assembly or $900+ for Logic Board).  7) When I overhauled the LCS back in October 2009, I had observed thermal grease had leaked through to the PPC970 CPU chips from the heat sink interfaces on both CPU A and B. However the computer had worked fine for the last 3 years with that condition present. As a precaution against possibility that the new start-up problems were being caused by this, I have just pulled the CPU/LCS assembly from the G5, removed both CPUs from the LCS, cleaned and re-greased the PPC970 chips and re-installed the CPU assemblies. There was no change in the boot failure symptoms. There has been no coolant leakage and CPU A temperature looks normal.  Questions:  Could the AD7417 Analog Devices sensor have anything to do with this booting problem? (Can't see how since it didn't do anything before now.) Is it possible the Power Management Unit (Mitsubishi M16C/62F) ROM is at fault? Any guesses as to any particular components or component types that might be bad ( i.e. maybe electrolytic capacitors, etc)?  Thanks for reading!

Most probably the solder issue happens in the U3 system controller which is situated on the backside of the logic board, with a large heatsink assembly. They should have cooled it better. Even on 2 GHz machines it heated up to 80 C quite easily. There's an IBM document [1] boasting how well they designed the thermal pumping endurance of the CPUs (also BGAs) - I don't know whether they applied that bit of engineering to the U3 controller as well..
With the older G5 generation as well as the latest one, it's possible to run the machine with only one CPU attached, and see whether it's one the CPUs that's starting to give up. I don't think the 2.7 model will start up like that, unfortunately.
You could fire up the OF test from the ASD CD and let it run the logic board test (select individual tests) for like 50 runs (loop count) or so and see if it locks up. The problem with the CD is that the fans go full rpm, making the cooling much better than during boot up or in the OS. One of my broken logic boards hung up during the ASD test deterministically and the other only in the OS or during boot up.
You could also loop the CPU tests from the ASD, but they don't seem to be a stress test, but rather just test computational correctness. Looping them probably won't put much heat load on the CPUs. If you can boot into OS, using some small stress test that fits in the CPU cache (small ffts etc..) could be used to verify the CPUs. The ASD memory test should be ok to test the memory buses, but those also go through the U3 chip.

• CPU Idle Percentage Near 90 -- Beachball City.

{Sigh}
Slow, slow, slow.
Approximately one month ago I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. My iMac has been sluggish to slow since. The context/problems/actions
There are three accounts on the computer. A root, a system administrator, and a guest account. The problems are much more pronounced in the System Administrator account than in the Guest account. (In hopes of resolving a Snow Leopard install Filevault issue I deleted a System Administrator account and shortly thereafter recreated it, using its original name.)
Put short, the beachball is a frequent visitor whether using Safari, Text Edit, Finder et al. Additionally, logging out of an account takes much more time than it once did: approximately three minutes to log out.
As to Safari -- slow to launch, slow to load pages. Two-five minutes to visit one page.
What I have tried
1) Checked Activity Monitor --- Percentage CPU of Safari and others is often at less than one percent. The CPU idle percentage is often in 90% range.
2) Compared the DNS of the guest account and sys adm account --- Identical.
3) Uninstalled Flash Player.
4) Checked Disk Utility --- Verified disk. Errors found. Then through Snow Leopard Install Disk, repaired the Disk. Rechecked. No errors found.
Additional info if helpful --
1) The HD is size is 150 GB, only 30 GB in use.
2) Two GB of Ram; one GB is listed as Free.
Day to day tasks are almost impossible in the sys adm account. Please help.
Yours,
Lxloco

Thank you Lyssa, Pondini, and The hatter for taking an interest.
I took some time away from rooting against the Steelers to do some of the homework mentioned above.
1) File Vault file -- Isn't on this HD; hasn't been on this HD for a couple of weeks. Rather, the file (the sparse bundle) was saved on an external and then deleted from this iMac's HD
2) Smart Utility HD Check -- Results: "Failing;" what's more: "Pending Bad Sectors: 1." Continuing on, "Completed: read failure;" "Remaining 90%;" and "LBA of First Error: 101643935."
3) System Log --- "Insert-Hang-Detected." This untrained eye takes immediate note of that message. It is most frequently associated with Safari, Safari Webpage Preview Fetcher, and Mail. An occasional "Query-Hang-Detected" is also spotted.
4) System Preferences - Login Items --- Only one item reported: A Lexmark Printer that was removed several years ago.
Trying to help myself, elsewhere I read something about a "Performance Update 1.0" from October 2009 and how it could have ameliorated "Insert-Hang-Detected" problems. Yet, when I review the webpage for that Update I fail to see my iMac's model number listed.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3901
Lastly, I will attempt to copy and paste excerpts of the system log. I hope this works and offers insights.

• My mac book pro 2009 is defective...

My macbook pro 2009 is defective. What shall I do?
It came defective out of the box. Apple authorized technical service does not acknowledge the problem. This service provider has not fixed my MBP W8921F52QT since my repairs request 5 months ago.
My MBP video image freezes or horizontal stripes appear on the screen. This occurs approximately after two hours of continuous work load.
Authorized service provider can not diagnose the problem, they were unable to identify the source of the problem in 4 months time, macbook was placed in their testing lab.
I can't play or work with my MBP since its purchase in october 2009, because it came defective. What can I do?

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate your support.
My authorized service provider took my MBP for diagnostics and repair, ordered a replacement part and kept my mac for 2 months with them in order test it better. When I came back to the service 2 months later, they returned the mac to me, claiming that it was in perfect order.
I took it back home, ran upon the very same video glitch and immediately contacted the service provider and the official apple support for Russia. The service provider insisted that there was no glitch after another week of diagnostics and suggested that I updated my Snow Leopard to 10.6.3 from 10.6.2. They also confirmed that if I recorded the glitch on video it would be sufficient proof to acknowledge hardware failure.
After taking my mac home for the second time, I was able to record two video files demonstrating the problem, sent some copies to Apple's official support in Russia and visited my service provider again. Service provider watched the videos again only to deny any failure at all; this time they needed to eyewitness the defect, because video is 'no proof' at all. Oddly the computer crashed and hang straight away and all 3 tech support members saw it. The senior manager then denied any fault again. They now want to waste my time more after they have been testing it for 3 months and a half.
The mangers of the service cheat on the customers (myself) and the Apple inc. by ordering parts without any evidence, stating that low quality and hang ups are normal for apple products and providing low quality of service.
I haven't used my computer for 6 months, because of constant crashes. Still the service provider denies any technical problem, they also blame MAC OS as the source of the problem (They reinstalled it many times, tried all versions, the problem persisted/ Should not the software be 100% part of the MAC, guaranteed to operate with macs?). Oddly, the official support centre in Russia is located in Poland and is not aware of who the tech managers are or what they do. The service provider's senior manager says that there is no organization above them and that they report to no one, not even apple. This appears to be totally wrong and very rude customer relationship.
My only need for now is to get a hardware failure conclusion from the service provider and get a refund from the premium reseller, right where I purchased it. In before concluding my post, I have admit that my family and I are proud owners two other macs and fully support apple's quality.
