Cpu over 100 degrees celsius

Hi
just got a new macbook, late 2008, and encoded 3 vids to play on sons ipod. Not until the 3rd one when i had everest installed, (using xp under bootcamp), that i noticed the cpu temp rise to and maintain a value around 100 degrees celsius. i have taken steps via software (smcfan and that tweaking software that goes with it) to increase fan speed uunder xp. Should i be worried that my macbook will have a shorter life span considering i had it at 100 degrees c for bout an hour? (Also, Is this a fault in my particular macbook, ie warranting a replacement?)

Hi,
My name is Harris and i am an Apple Store Genius.
100C (212 F) is the hottest that the CPU should go. Pao1250 is right in saying that it will shut down. But when it gets to the point where it will shut down, some damage may have already been done. If you encode videos and it goes to 100, that is fine. As long as you cool it down after not to long of a period of time. If it goes much more above that, bring it to one of us at the genius bar.

Hi, i have a HP ENVY 15-j171nr and evrytime i run a cpu intensive program where it puts the cpu to 100% load, My cpu temperature jumps to 99 degrees celsius and stays there. Is this normal? of could i have a bad heat sink? Intel rates the CPU (i7-4700k) to 100 degrees celsius.

  • T60p CPU temperature over 80 degrees celsius

Hello, I installed Notebook Hardware Control and it shows a cpu temperature of 84 degrees (yes celsius!).
I can't put my notebook on my lap because it's too hot.
The fan is louder than it was in the beginning and from time to time it makes a loud noise (like when you're holding a playing card between the spokes of a bike).
The T60p gets almost always that hot, what could be the reason and how can I fix this (it still has warranty)?
    Thank you for your answers.
Something additional: I'am not sure about that but it may be that the CPU gets only that hot when the power is coming from the AC adapter (my ac adapter indeed is making also some noise, it's like you could hear the power passing through, is that normal?)

PS the GPU temperature is around 90 degrees celsius as well..

    Welcome to the forum!
Yes, these temperatures are very high and you should send the machine in for a checkup. The fan is likely on its way out or just badly clogged with dust.
    Good luck.

  • Mail running cpu over 100%

Mail 6.3 is running the cpu at well over 100%. Fans running constantly. 10.8.3. removed accounts, re-enabled, nothing helped. Ideas?

    Hey,
problem is solved: I deactivated and again activated my mail accounts by clicking the check boxes in Mail´s preferences menu. Immediately the CPU consumption fell to normal and so did the fan.
    Cheers,

  • Cpu temp 50 degrees celsius at idle.

hi, i think i need some cooling..
the temp of my cpu is over 50 degrees celcius at idle, and i am getting worried.
i have tried some coolermaster jet 4's on my system, but they have to be cranked up full throttle and still only bring it down to 50 deg celcius..
i use a high powered exhaust fan and hdd cooler collermaster cooldrive 3.
at mo i have gone back to pentium's heatsink and fan as it is actually quieter and as good as coolermaster's. but i need to get the temp down about 20 degrees!!
funny thing is at high stress the system only rises about 6 degrees, but i would like the chip to last longer than 12 months, so any ideas about some good coolers??

thought l would update this thread rather than start a new one.
I am getting idle temps of 44-46C. I suspect this is too high.
The reason this is concerning me is my fps in doom3 is only 22-25fps when running the time demo demo1.demo. I have doom3 set to 1024x768 with high quality. And l suspenct the P4 thermal monitoring is kicking in and slowing the CPU down. I have applied the ati doom fix and spent hours tweaking with cvars.
Do you think l should re-apply the thermal grease on cpu and zalman?

  • X200 CPU reaches 100 celsius degrees. is this normal?

I'm using LenovoThinkVantage Toolbox to do a CPU stress test and and the same time I'm running TPFanControl to monitor the speed of the fan and the temperature of the CPU.
When I run the CPU stress test the temperature of the CPU reaches 100 degrees celcius with the fan going at 7000rpms which all of it sounds excessive and not right to me. Is this normal? or there is something wrong with my system.
    Thanks in advance

100C is around the maximum the CPU can deal with before sustaining damage.  Even then, running at that temperature for extended periods of time is most certainly going to be problematic.
I can't imagine it was designed to be run that way, so I'm guessing there's a problem.  Maybe a heatsink is not seated properly, or something is obstructing airflow.  Either way, I'd say that if you're under warranty it's worth having the depot take a look.

  • 93 degrees celsius CPU TEMP!! and performance is degrading

    Hey Guys.
I have had my MacBook Pro for about 10 months and now my battery is at 60% health one day and then will fluctuate to 89% health the next.
Recently too, a lot of software has been hanging up and I get the rotating beach ball of doom. The machine has also been running rather unusually hotter than normal. For example I'm just watching a YouTube Video and listening to music in iTunes at the CPU reaches a heat of about 75 degrees celsius. About 5 months ago this would only occur if I was rendering or encoding files. Last night I was encoding a movie into MPEG4 and my CPU reached a whopping 93 degrees celsius!!!
I have tried resetting the Power Management control but that didn't help.
Is anyone else having similar issues?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Chris Hall

    Hi Chris,
Oh, your battery health fluctuations might be related to the heat issue your experiencing, since lithium polymers hate heat. If your using the system plugged into it's adaptor, you can prolong the battery life by removing it, once it's fully charged. Your MBP will continue to run but remember to insert the battery before you unplug cause the system will just power down/shut down; thus lose work.
Do yourself a favor, try saving your CPU's from overheating, they're gonna die if they keep on being cooked or fried!!! I found this utility that give me more control over those internal fans, i'd advise you to tweak the default speed from the standard 2000 RPM to a more realistic 2200 RPM (anything above 3500 RPM starts becoming noisy).
Personally, I've managed to lower the processor temps from the frightening 71-75°C to a more comfortable 50°C. Give it a try and tell the rest of us what you think.
    http://www.conscius.de/~eidac/software/software.html
    Good luck.

Yes, that's normal. Don't do it very often or over long periods.

  • Macbook CPU full load, 99 degrees celsius

On my late 2008 13" Macbook 2.4ghz when I run 2 instances of "yes > /dev/null" for 10 minutes to stress the CPU, the CPU temperature is at 99 degrees celsius even with the fans going at the maximum 6200 rpms and while using a cheap cooling pad. I took the computer to an Apple store "genius" and he thought this was normal. Is anyone else seeing temperatures like this using this stress test method? I looked at the website http://www.intelmactemp.com/ and highest full load temperature I see for this computer is 84 degrees celsius. I have noticed problems running intensive 3d games where the system slows down from high temperatures and more so under Windows XP.
This computer is 4 months out of warranty but until recently I never ran intensive programs and so never noticed the problem. What can I do about this, I feel Apple should be responsible for this.

    Hi MindBrain,
Saw your post last night but didn't have immediate access to 13" MacBook (Aluminum). So I've got a 2.4GHz unit with 4GB of RAM and ran two instances of the same command in Terminal.
All information is reported via iStat Pro:
CPU Temp before test - 76 (fans at 1998 RPM)
CPU Temp @ 5 minutes into test - 96 (fans at 2001 RPM)
CPU Temp @ 10 minutes into test - 97 (fans at 3100 RPM)
CPU Temp @ 15 minutes into test - 103 (fans at 5800 RPM)
CPU Temp @ 20 minutes into test - 106 (fans at 6200 RPM)
CPU Temp @ 25 minutes into test - 108 (fans at 6200 RPM)
For thoroughness, I also opted to run the test on a brand new 13" MacBook Pro, a 2 year old white MacBook 2.2GHz and another MacBook Aluminum. It's convenience I have when surrounded by 5600+ Macs across campus. All of the other machines also reported similar numbers, breaking the 100 degree threshold between 12-13 minutes into the test.
While I do not wish to discredit that URL, in all honesty I've probably had three times the number of entries on that website (611 as of this post) come across my desk in the past year for various reasons. So I really can't see that as being a valid resource to support an argument.
Not to mention it was your decision to not purchase AppleCare on your computer within the one year window, it was also your decision to not properly ensure adequate function of your machine prior to conclusion of the one year limited warranty. There was no responsibility on behalf of Apple to obligate you to stress test the machine 4 months after the one year warranty expired.
Lastly, is the sluggishness only in Windows XP or is it occurring on the Mac side as well?

    Hello All,
Vital Stats: OSX 10.8.2 with 2.5Ghz Core i7 and 4GB DDR3. 7200 RPM standard HDD
    What's Happening:
Since Upgrading my Late 2011 model Macbook Pro to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and the latest releas of iPhoto, CPU temps jump to 100 deg Celsius and fan speed maxes out at 6200 RPM when iPhoto is opened.

Please Note: This Macbook is done Indexing Spotlight since the upgrade and no other resource hogs are running as verified by Activity Monitor
A "PRAM" Reset has already been performed.
This "Overheating" Should not be happening - Yes I know true overheating is when the intel chip shuts off, but Underclocking/High Temps under such a minimal load is not normal to me. Please Help.

  • Mac goes over 100 percent cpu usage

As seen in the picture, the game called 'runescape' which i was playing reached 171 percent cpu usage on my computer. My computer never crashed from playing this game but crashes alot while playing Dota 2, once when I crashed from dota 2, the computer lagged showing my activity monitor which showed that dota had 100.1 percent cpu usage. Is this a problem of the game or the computer? Multiple friends of mine have played this game and never once crashed on it.

It is a problem with games in general: they use a lot of CPU power (and heat the CPU up correspondingly). Over 100% is not very spectacular, because modern CPUs have 2, 4 or 8 cores, and each has a maximum of 100%. If you have a 4 cores cpu the run escape is taking almost 45% which is a lot.

  • Itunes spiking my CPU well over 100% - any genius got some time?

    Hi there,
Ongoing problem with my iTunes 7.5 hammering my CPU at well over 100%. This happens regularly every 5 - 7 minutes and is quite annoying. I used activity monitor to copy the activity as it was occurring. I hope there's a genius here who can decipher what my issue is. Please it's driving me crazy!!!
For clarity, I repair permissions regularly, I update after a safe waiting period, repair permissions again, restart computer, use Mac Janitor for day, week, month, repair permissions again, restart computer, etc...
My computer runs extremely fast when iTunes is off. Everything grinds to a halt when iTunes starts to spike.
Also I checked the discussions and followed, with no luck, all the prior recommended fixes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

  • Ichat consumes over 100% CPU in video chat mode.

    Hi,
I just updated my MBP (mid 2009) with new Snow Leopard. Ever since then, some of applications hangs, especially ichat, Mail, iphoto, safari.
Is it normal that iChat consumes over 100% CPU in video chat mode? Does everyone have the same problem?

Hello all. Ralph, I really appreciate all of your help on these iChat threads. I too am having the same issues with CPU overload on both of my Macbook Pro 2.16 GHz machines. I believe I may have traced the problem to older, non-Core 2 Duo chip computers such as mine. I have an iChat crazy family - lots of us spread across the country. The ones who have newer machines with a Core 2 Duo do not have this problem. They have super crisp, normal CPU usage (never exceeding 80%) chats. Sadly, this is not the case when I try with either of my Macbook Pro's running the older chips.
To clarify, I have also taken all of the steps mentioned here and in other threads to try to address the problem. I have reinstalled Snow Leopard, adjusted the maximum bandwith to as low as 200 kbps, tested my download, upload speeds, etc. Nothing seems to work. Ichat it essentially useless. I wish I had an answer for this issue. I assume Apple will address this in the next OS update.

  • Elitebook 8530w overheating, CPU TEMP over 105 degree C

Hi, Is there any one had this problem ? My 8530W always thermal shut down when I run heavy CAD work.
I use software to detect my cpu core temp, and it report over 105 degree C before shut down. Does any one
know the repair center in Sydney that I can bring my 8530W to fix this problem.
    Thanks

No Intel...that would be like a square peg in a round hole. The sockets are not the same. You could downgrade to an AMD A6 processor but you have already done that, essentially, by capping the cpu at 60% of its rated speed. Still, if the cpu is defective, as it may be, then downgrading might have the desired effect.
This is the full list of supported processors:
    AMD® A10-4600M processor (3.2 GHz/2.3 GHz, 1600 MHz/4.0 MB L2 cache, DDR3,quad core, 35W)
    AMD A8-4500M processor (2.8 GHz/1.9 GHz, 1600 MHz/4.0 MB L2 cache, DDR3, quad core, 35W)
    AMD A6-4400M processor (3.2 GHz/2.7 GHz, 1600 MHz/1.0 MB L2 cache, DDR3, dual core, 35W)
At this point they are practically giving away the A6-4400M. Here is a new one for $8.55.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/AM4400DEC23HJ-NEW-GENUINE-ORIGINAL-AMD-A6-SERIES-A6-4400M-2700-MHZ-SOCKET-FS...
Whoever installed the new thermal paste was right there where you need to get to replace the processor so obviously knows how to do it. Going from a quad to dual core has to produce less heat, I would hope.

  • CPU running at over 90 degrees C

I have a January 2005 iMac G5 which is suffering from the overheating and sleep problem.
The CPU runs at over 90 degrees which, I assume, is way too high.
What I'd like to know is why this is happening? where does the fault lie? Is it software or hardware related, or is it simply a design fault with these machines?
I've spoken to an authorised repairer who didn't seem too well up on the problem, and said it would cost £150 to just look at the machine, and maybe up to £500 to repair - hardly worth doing, really.
any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Philip - Miriam is right... first I am surprised that the machine is actually still running at that high a temp, I would classify that as extremely high, which would lead to odd sleep habits... just call apple repair tell them your machine is on the list (if it is) and exhibiting odd power issues related to sleep and wake up problems and it seems to be getting worse and the temps are high, give it a try, the worse anybody could say is no... Good luck, Rick
