CPU & PSU

Hello,
1)Correct me if I am wrong on following point:
Any one who is concerned only with security fixes and not functionality fixes, CPU may be good approach. Right?
2)There are many new features in 11.2.0.2. Are patch sets not just for bug fixes?
Any help will be highly appreciated.

  • 10.2.0.4 cpu/psu Patch.

    Hi,
    I have to upgrade the database from 8.1.7.3 to 10.2.0.4.1(Does 10.2.0.4.1 reflects cpu/psu patch status?)
    OS =HP-UNIX 11.11
    Does cpu/psu patch comes along with 10.2.0.4 patchset?What is the best way to upgrade the database?
    Below is the steps what I am thinking to implement:
    (1) apply patchset8.1.7.4 and upgrade database by running catalog.sql and catproc.sql
    (2)Install 10.2.0.1 base version.
    (3)install 10.2.0.4 patchset
    (4)apply cpu/psu patch 10.2.0.4.1
    (5)start up upgrade and run catupgrade.sql for db upgarde?
    Will catupgrade.sql will take care for catcpu.sql?
    Please share your experience with me.
    Regards,
    MK

    You need to read the upgrade docs. What matters is not whether one script runs another ... but rather that if you follow Oracle's directions you will be successful. Which means the correct scripts will be run in the correct order.
    But why are you moving to 10.2.0.4 this late in the game rather than 11.1.0.7 or 11.2.0.1?
    10.2.0.4 is going to be in extended support mode in just a matter of months.

  • About CPU/PSU patches

    I understand that there are different database CPU/PSU patches for
    (1) Grid Infra homes
    and
    (2) Oracle DB homes.
    So are we supposed to apply ONLY "CPU/PSU for Grid Infra" to clusterware homes
    and apply ONLY "CPU/PSU for Oracle DB" to Oracle DB homes?
    Or
    Are we supposed to apply BOTH "CPU/PSU for Grid Infra" and "CPU/PSU for Oracle DB" to clusterware homes and Oracle DB homes?
    Thank you in advance.

    Your questions are answered in MOS Doc 1339140.1
    PSU patches include CPU content, but they employ different patching mechanisms and cannot be interchanged. GI PSU patches include database PSU content and should only be applied to GI Homes. DB PSU patches should only be applied to DB Homes. The directions in the README of any patch should be followed at all times.

  • Patching, CPU PSU

    hi,
    today I 've red through the Critical Patch Update from April. But my english is not good enough to understand everything. So maybe someone can help me.
    okay... in february I've installed a new linux-server with oracle 10.2.0.1, after that I upgraded to 10.2.0.4 and then applied the PSU from January
    what I had to do now? There is a CPU and a PSU for 10.2.0.4 and a PSU for 10.2.0.4.4
    CPU has only security fixes, right? PSU has bugfixes+securityfixes and is cummulativ (means I can install it on a blank 10.2.0.4). Can I install it too after the January PSU is installed?
    And for future... what do I have to do, if I omitted one PatchDay? Can I apply the next PSU, or is it necessary to first install the omitted CPU/PSU....
    sorry for this noob-questions, but I'm not able to get this information out of the documentations

    Hi,
    Whenever you apply next CPU patch its not necessary to apply the omitted patches...
    Its always there in read me file...
    PSU patches are CPU+bug fixes and sometimes they generate some new bugs..
    So its better to look in metalink about bug fixed and new issues with the PSU patch.
    Similar is case with PSU, its not necessary to apply omitted patch ,... you can directly apply latest PSU fro a db version.... better refer to readme..

  • CPU/PSU Patching through OEM

    hi,
    We have large number of database in our environment. So we planned to do the CPU/PSU patching through OEM.
    So like to know the feasibility of doing from OEM whether we can or not? and is there any other security issue in doing so.
    I mean only with oracle user we can able to do the patching through OEM or we can do with any other user who has privilege.

  • Found "Digital Audio" logic board, cpu & psu inside my Quicksilver ?

    Recently got a quicksilver that "appeared" different to me . . .
    Upon looking inside it's is a digital audio g4 swap (verified part #'s)
    Logic board, 466mhz cpu and psu inside a Quicksilver case.
    Any upgrades for this? does the dual 533 work in here?
    Not sure what to do with this one, was hoping it was the sawtooth with the agp without adc (for testing flashed video cards without taping pins 3 & 11) . . .anyways

    If you are just a TINY bit adventurous, get a QS CPU.
    All you need to do is run a 12V line for fourth screw hole on CPU daughtercard.
    Have a dig at XLR8yourmac.com, details used to be there...somewhere.
    I once a QS 867 CPU and moved a resistor and made it a 933Mhz. I then ran over it with a rolling chair and knock a bunch of caps off.
    Soldered them back on and sent it to a friend with a DA. He slapped it in and went on to do great things with that old DA. (like write the Mac Nvidia 6200 ROM)
    The later QS 133Mhz bus CPUs had more cache, something like that. I know that the 867 was MUCH faster than a 733 I tried in it once.

  • What CPU/PSU did a patch come from?

    Is there some way to map what patchset a patch number came from? Why does opatch toss that information. It would be very helpful if it was included:

  • Need to evaluate CPU or PSU patches

    Hi,
    Our business is on the way of migrating the databases. Before migrating the databases, we need to evaluate whether we need to apply CPU or PSU patches after migration.
    If we are positive on applying CPU patches, then we will migrate the oracle_homes as well, as we have been applying CPU patches after every release.
    In case if we are positive upon PSU patches, then we will be migrating only the databases.
    So with this scenario, we need to evaluate whether we need CPU or PSU. I did a basic analysis and found that PSU contains the CPU plus non-security updates. Therefore applying PSU is beneficial. Also we cannot mixmatch the patches i.e. if we are applying CPU, then we have to apply only CPU patches and if we are applying PSU then we have to apply only PSU patches. However we still need to know further details which could be captured from the answers to below questions.
    1. What are the risks and impacts of applying the patches.
    2. When Oracle releases both CPU and PSU, on what basis can we evaluate whether we need CPU/PSU when we are applying for the 1st time.
    3. If, after a period of time after applying patches, if we encounter any bugs and Oracle recommeds to apply a bug fix, what will be the implication that will be encountered if we have to apply on top of CPU or PSU patches.
    4. Will any situation arise where we need to apply a CPU patch, when we already have been applying PSU patch. If so do we have to rollback all the PSU patches or only the
    5. Do we need to install new oracle_home each time we are applying PSU patch
    6. Are there any ways we can reduce downtime. Are these hot patches. We have reduced our downtime while applying CPU patches by applying through OEM. How do we knoe whether they are hot or cold patches
    These are some of the questions. Maybe later on i may get more questions. But I would like to get a clear idea.
    Note: I had to write this elaborately, so that I can make myself clear on the scenario and also to avoid redundancy while posting messages.
    Thanks

  • This is regarding psu/cpu on 11.2.0.2

    Hi,
    We installed and created the 11.2.0.2 db on 13-APR-11
    ./opatch lsinventory -all shows the below contents
    List of Oracle Homes:
    Name Location
    OraDb11g_home2 /orahome/oracle/product/11.2.0.2/db_1
    Installed Top-level Products (1):
    Oracle Database 11g 11.2.0.2.0
    There are 1 products installed in this Oracle Home.
    There are no Interim patches installed in this Oracle Home.
    We haven't applied any kind patch till now so instead of applying and patchset can we upgrade to 11.2.0.3 which is latest one , is it covers all the oracle released patch set (psu/cpu) till now on 11g ?
    appreciated for the inputs
    Thanks
    Edited by: user12194321 on Sep 17, 2012 4:44 AM

    HI,
    As the database created on 13-APR-11 and we haven't applied any patches (CPU/PSU) after that
    suppose if application won't support 11.2.0.3 then i need to apply patches on 11.2.0.2
    These are the below patch no released for 11.2.0.2
    Patchset/PSU number
    11.2.0.2.6 -> 13696224
    11.2.0.2.5 -> 13343424
    11.2.0.2.4 -> 12827726
    11.2.0.2.3 -> 12419331
    11.2.0.2.2 -> 11724916
    11.2.0.2.1 -> 10248523
    is i need to apply all ptaches to get updated with oracle OR by applying 11.2.0.2.6 -> 13696224 only enough to sync with oracle ? so no need to apply 13343424,12827726,12419331,11724916,10248523
    appreciated for the inputs

  • I think my k8n has cooked my cpu...

    hi there...
    i have had a bad run with my pc.i upgraded my k8t neo to a k8n neo...my first k8n lost the sata controller after a very short time.the second k8n had no sound out of the box.the third one had what can only be described as static damage from the start...less than an hour after it was installed(using static safe procedures)it freaked out for about half an hour...we turned it off,checked cables screws etc.and on reboot it seemed fine.this happened with increasing frequency over a couple of months,until in desperation i put the k8t back in,and flashed the bios.now its stable(with the k8t in it) but using several memory throughput benchmarks(sandra etc) my memory throughput is down to that of a pc2100 athlonxp rig.i use pc3200...no the memory has no issues whatsoever,its been exhaustively tested,and,of course,i have an athlon64.the k8n mobo exhibited symptoms suggesting,memory,video card,motherboard,sound card,dvd drive,onboard ethernet.hard to pin down,and extremely frustrating,and intermittant enough to be impossible to prove.i took it back to the place i got it from and they sent it  to msi in taiwan...because the place i got it tested it on their own gear(cpu,psu,etc) and the mobo absolutely crapped itself.the memory throughput issue only started happening about 3 weeks ago...which was the main reason i changed the mobo's,as on the k8n the throughput was down to that of my gf's p3 600,which has pc100 memory,and thast told me something was very wrong.also the n kept losing the cmos,which was annoying(system time,bios settings etc.).of course being buggy it was frequently benchmarked,so i know the memory issue happened within a 2 week period.also,the fact that the memory has better thruput on the t board tells me that the n board has serious issues,considering the a64 has its own memory controller.also the n board was giving me ridiculous readings,telling me that the cpu was running at 567mhz etc.(its a 2ghz a64 s754),the t board does not.
    the machine is stable now,but only for about 24 hours,it used to run happily for days,before all this started.
    what i want to know is,how can i get my retailer to replace my cpu?...i have 20 years of electronics experience,including manufacturing,which was how i knew static was what caused this,the symptoms are very typical of static damage,and also that it happened in the factory.
    i need this cpu replaced,because its costing me a performance hit(and,the board broke it,they should fix it...) and when the next round of 3d shooters comes out,this machine will be practically useless...
    are there any precedents for this kind of behaviour?...does thius happen to n boards a lot?...what should i do if the retailer refuses to replace the cpu?
    thanks.
    its a k8,t at the mo,n platinum usually,socket 754 3200+ @ 2Ghz,1G ddr 400,geforce 6800 vanilla(leadtek) 500w psu w/20a on the 12v rail(dont bother,i connected 2 psu's together and nothing changed,and yes,i know exactly how to do that properly.),sblive 24bit 7.1 sound,dvd burner,2x80G seagate sata @ raid 0,1x hitachi 120G pata as boot,running linux,winxp and winxp64.

    Never heard about something like this before, a board killing a CPU. When there's a problem with your power line or lightning strikes or whatever, then yes.
    Anyway, I dont know how things are in your country but here the retailer has to give full warranty during the first six months after purchase. So I could RMA my stuff and without any questions asked they would get me a new CPU. But either way, I would just RMA the CPU, send it back to the retailer and wait what happens. Usually retailers arent bitches when it comes to CPUs with no broken pins or any other obvious damage. If it looks okay but doesnt work they will replace it.
    Just my two cents though, from my own experience.

  • Does 10.2.0.4 CRS have any CPU to apply?

    We have RAC system on 10.2.0.4 for both CRS and Database. Never have any CPU applied. We would like to apply the CPU to database. But want to know if there is CPU available for CRS. If so, what is the patch number? Thanks.

    Hi,
    But want to know if there is CPU available for CRS. If so, what is the patch number? Thanks.Every quarter, Oracle provides Critical Patch Updates (CPU) to address security vulnerabilities, and Patch Set Updates (PSU) to address proactive, critical fixes and security vulnerabilities.
    Yes... there is CPU/PSU for RAC and CRS.

  • Apply CPU before upgrade?

    We are upgrading from 10.2.0.5 to 11.2.0.3 as well as applying the October CPU within the same outage. We are installing the 11.2.0.3 oracle binaries ahead of time outside of the outage. Is there any reason we can't apply the October CPU to the binaries we install prior to upgrading the DB, to save outage time? Should we still run catbundle after the upgrade or would the changes it makes be included in the steps that the upgrade performs?

    Yes you can apply the CPU (now renamed to SPU) ahead of time, then run any post install scripts in the CPU after the upgrade is completed. See this MOS Doc
    Best approach for Oracle database patching sequence to latest/required patchset along with CPU/PSU/any-other-one-off patch [ID 865255.1]
    Oracle recommends that you apply the latest PSU instead - PSUs includes CPUs/SPUs and are also released quarterly. Pl be aware that once you apply a PSU, you will need to continue to apply PSUs in the future (you cannot apply CPUs/SPUs).
