CPU replacement questions

Hello all, I was given a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8 by a friend that had it laying around. The catch is, one of the processors is shot and has been removed, making it a 1.8gHz machine. So I have a few questions:
1. Can I upgrade both cpu's making it a dual 2.0, or would those processors not be compatible with the motherboard?
2. Can I purchase another 1.8 gHz cpu, install it in the slot that's currently vacant, thereby making it a dual 1.8 again?
I have the temp. sensor calibration software so that is already taken care of. Thanks for any help you can give me.

You can't upgrade to a faster CPU, but you can buy another 1.8GHz, but you have to make sure that it is the right part number, as it has to be the right CPU for that logic board.

  • Satellite A200 - CPU replacing

    Hi
    I have an Satellite A200-130 with CoreDuo 1,86 CPU and I'm thinking about replacing it for Core2Duo 2,0 mainly for ot's little better performance and virtualization options.
    Anyone done that?

    Generally the CPU replacement is not very easy on the notebooks.
    Its trickier as the replacement on the desktop PCs.
    First of all you should check if your chipset supports the Core2Duo 2Ghz CPUs.
    Usually you could find such info on the Intel page.
    Secondly you have to know if the BIOS would support the new Core2Duo CPU.
    This is very important because the fan table which is stored in the BIOS controls the cooling modules. If the cooling modules dont work correctly then the notebook would overheat and this could damage the notebooks hardware.
    Therefore such CPU upgrades are not advisable and mostly not possible

  • Lenovo 3k out of warranty -is it worth getting MB or CPU replaced?

    Just getting started on this repair for my friend, so haven't priced out a MB or CPU replacement;
    Is it worth (cost effective) to work toward replacing a cpu or mb if one or the other is defective?
    The system is reliably turning off on its own within 10 seconds or 10 minutes; with most all accessories removed, and wether in the bios or booted into the utilities section of the hdd, the system will turn off after a short period of time -on a/c power-.
    It's a Lenovo Product: 3000 N100 0768-DLU
    any replies i'm very interested in. THANKS. Matt

    narukthul,
    Sorry you had a bad experience.  Can you explain a bit more?  It sounds like you had some service while still in warranty, that may or may not have been related to the GPU, and now you are having these symptoms.
    How far outside of warranty are you?
    When was your last repair that you reference and when did these symptoms occur?
    Best regards,
    Mark
    i had my display replaced with the rubbishy refurbished parts lenovo uses to repair warrantied computers. It came back unsurprisingly worse off than when i sent it in. I believe they had attached the display cable incorrectly to the motherboard causing the display to flicker and to display a garbled picture as well. it took 3 more send ins to the lenovo depot for them to fix it and by the last time i got my computer back my warranty was expiring then less than a month later my display picture would consistently become more garbled overtime both when viewed via laptop display and external monitor.
    I did not have these issues before sending my computer in for "service" The fact that external monitor display was also garbled beyond recognition indicates either damaged GPU hardware or software. Operating under the assumption that the video driver software had become corrupted I tried several different driver versions and even uninstalled and reinstalled from scratch to no avail. Given that a reinstall of the video driver was inneffective I am confident that when I sent my computer in for "service" the technicians attaching the display cable to the motherboard caused damage to the GPU over the 4 times I had to send my computer back in because of the loose display cable. Essentially I sent in a working computer for service and lenovo sent me back a paperweight.

  • Quicksilver cpu fan replacement question

    Hi,
    I have 2001 quicksilver 867. The cpu fan had stopped moving. I got it going again by taking it out and moving the fins around, but i'm looking for a replacement.
    I found the "OEM" versions but the idea of spending $60 for a fan isn't that appealing.
    So i'm considering just getting a standard 3 pin fan, and using an adapter to make it 2 pins.
    I was thinking of getting this fan:
    http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?mainpage=product_info&cPath=51&productsid=133
    and I noticed they have several "2 pin" fan adapters here:
    http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=289&main_page=index
    So my questions are:
    (1) Will that fan above work well enough for the quicksilver cpu?
    (2) Do you know which 2 pin adapter would fit the logic board, as they have several types. Type A would be my guess but it's hard to tell from the small pictures.
    Thanks!
    David Kiley

    I would remove the fan and take it to a local PC store. You should be able to find a reasonably priced replacement at most PC parts retailers.

    Here is the Manual:
    Manual
    Processor list is on page 2. You already have the second best compatible processor. The only faster one the motherboard will accept is an N970. It is not worth the hassle for .1 ghz.
    You have 6 gigs of RAM and could have 8. Also, a solid state drive would add significant punch. These are about your only options to speed it up.

  • G62-355dx cpu replaced still not working

    My g62-355dx is still not working after replacing the cpu (thats what the blink code was....caps lock blinking once every few seconds) so after replacing the cpu I am still getting the same blink code....tried the hard reset before replacing the cpu but havent tried it after....I just need to know if its possibly the mother board and if a motherboard from a different g62 model will work in my 355dx....
    This question was solved.

    This is about the third post of its type I have fielded in the last month or so and I will repeat what I have always maintained. It is almost never the CPU, regardless of the blink code. It is almost always the motherboard. Your by far safest bet is to replace like with like although likely another g62-300 series motherboard will work, if it has any feature yours did not or vice versa it may take some case mods to make it fit and you want to avoid that.
    You will need the Service Manual:

    Your motherboard part number can be found inside the memory compartment. Post back if you want detailed help finding a replacement.

  • G5 Processor replace questions...

    Hello all,
    I have a early 05 build G5, and after I power up, after 20 - 30 mins the fans kick into overdrive and the comp freezes. I took it to apple yesterday and was told that more than likely it was the processor, which is a common problem with this model. He also said it may be the logic board too.
    My question is, i have a 2.0ghz processor that i guess i need to replace, can i replace it with a higher processor compatible with my model? Say a 2.3ghz. And how difficult is it to replace a processor yourself?
    All feedback is greatly appreciated....

    If you thrash around ebay you will find some cpu's for $100-$200 and some used G5s for $300-$500+. There are also several companies replacing G5 CPUs for around $500. You've got to get a compatible CPU which will require 3 of the last 4 letters of the part number printed on the CPU. Whether it's all worth it is up to you. Here's a take apart guide: http://macinzebox.blogspot.com/2008/07/apple-service-source-manuals.html
    Note that if you do decide to trade out a cpu, you (or Apple certified tech) will need to run the Apple Service Diagnostic 2.5.8 to calibrate the fans.
    My machine did the same thing as yours, went to apple etc. - same diagnosis. I was able to turn off the lower (bad) CPU with open firmware commands and now it's running on 1 processor. I did remove and replace the lower processor (re-seat), it was a little intimidating, but not difficult.

  • CPU replacement, warranty?

    I currently own a T61 thinkpad with an Intel C2D T7100.
    Recently i bought an T7700. I'm planning to replace the T7100 with the T7700.
    The only question for me is, will I still have my warranty when I do this?
    I hope the warranty won't be void, because there are no seals with 'warranty void if broken'
    and on the Lenovo site you can just download the hardware maintenance manual.
    Thanks for your reaction.

    Basically, you would need to replace the original CPU before seeking warranty service.  The CPU is not a cusomter replaceable component.

  • Internal Hard ddrive replacement question?

    I have an iMac/Intel C2D and want to replace my internal hard drive with a larger one. My question is: Can my iMac utilize an SATA II drive interface and use it at the SATA II speed, 300 Gb/s or will it only use it at 150 Gb/s? If only at the slower speed theres no reason to pay extra for the SATA II speed. Also any recommendation as to Hitachi vs Seagate?

    The drive you have is already going to be a 7200RPM drive, so there really aren't any faster out there. You get much faster than that, and the drive platters will shatter.
    RAM and CPU tend to dictate performance in video editing. Odds are you're maxed out on RAM already and the CPU isn't upgradeable on the iMac, so you've reached the limits of your system. You want faster, you'll need a new system.

  • CPU Fan Question

    I have been experiencing "freeze up's" lately and I did some research here to troubleshoot the problem. I performed a thorough dusting and cleaning of the interior and the problem seemed to go away. Needless to say, after 3-4 days of problem-free operation, the "freeze-up" problem returned.
    I have discovered that the CPU fan is not operating. Presently I'm using the G4 with the door open and a desk fan directed at the CPU heatsink. Operation appears to be back to normal.
    Question- Should the CPU fan be constantly operating or is it thermostatically controlled on-off?
    If the CPU fan needs to be replaced, is there a suitable substitute CPU fan that will enhance the cooling of the CPU?
    My model spec's are below.

    Hello Carpetbagger,
    I thought my QS 2002 800 MHz (with a dual 1 GHz cpu) was running a bit hot, so I went looking for fans that moved a bit more air. Evercool makes one, but I finally settled on a Sunon PMD series - PMD1206PTB1-A - which cools the beastie right down. (It also sounds like a leaf blower) Price was less than $10, less than $15 with shipping, although I may have had to buy two (just an excuse to buy another Mac). There are several other PMD Sunon fans that would seem to fill the bill even better - increased air flow, but fewer RPMs and less noise - but they were available in quantities of 100 units (@$6 ea).
    The KDE 1206 Sunon fan is one of several fitted as standard, and should work as well as it did when the QS was new. It, too, should be available at under $10.
    It's a fairly common fan size - 60mm x 25mm - and has many applications, so if you search Google for fans and distributors you should find out more about availability than you ever wanted to know.
    http://www.PCtoys.com/ is a source for both the KDE Sunon and Evercool.
    Remember, a cool Mac is a happy Mac!

    I run one XP drive for games (primarily Flight Simulators) and music/video (CD/DVD) conversion (Danisoft/SlyFox).  Mostly stuff that I have yet to find an equivalent that will run on Mac OS.  I run one drive with Lion: MSOffice for Mac, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, etc (main use drive).  I run one drive with Snow Leopard: still have some stuff that requires Rosetta but is little used.  (Thinking about creating a Snow Leopard partition on my Lion drive and using my current Snow Leopard drive for additional storage.)  I run one drive thatis purely storage.  Everything is backedup to a 2TB Time Capsule using Time Machine. Op systems also backed up to Hitachi 2TB G-Drive using Carbon CopyCloner as well as all important files backed up there as well.
    Video card failed.  Ifixed it using the ‘bake it in the oven’ trick. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7um_hZYom4)  However, still thinking about replacing the card.  There are three Apple part numbers foravailable/comparable video cards.
    630-9898 – This is the part number ofthe card currently installed.  Best pricefound is $586.37
    661-4642 – This card is listed as newwith no choke.  Best price found is$242.00.
    661-4854 – This card is listed as new‘with Choke’.  Best price found is$246.00.
    Then, I see where some are replacingthe NVIDIA cards with ATI’s.
    5770 – $249.00 from Apple.
    5870 – $449.00 from Apple.
    QUESTION
    Based on my current gaming on the XPdrive and the primary use of the Mac OS drives being general purpose (with moreand more getting into iPhoto and iMovie), what are the feelings of the community on which replacement vid card to purchase?  (Note: To date I have not had any issues with noise or smoothness using the 8800.  But who knows what I might want to do in the future and I want to be prepared as best Ican without spending the $1500 on that really high end card.)
    TIA

    You should look at those Apple version of the ATI Radeon 5770 and 5780 video cards.  They are the current mac pro cards but will work in 2008's.
    The 5770 requires one aux power cable and the 5870 requires two.  Both have two mini-displayports and a dual link DVI port.

  • Very simple XSLT string replacing question

    Hi,
    This is a really simple question for you guys, but it took me long, and i still couldn't solve it.
    I just want to remove all spaces from a node inside an XML file.
    XML:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <root insertedtime="2008-05-01T14:03:00.000+10:00" pkid="23421">
       <books>
          <book type='fiction'>
             <author>John Smith</author>
             <title>Book title</title>
             <year>2 0  0 8</year>
          </book>
       </books>
    </root>in the 'year' node, the value should not contain any spaces, that's the reason why i need to remove spaces using XSLT. Apart from removing space, i also need to make sure that the 'year' node has a non-empty value. Here's the XSLT:
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0">
        <xsl:strip-space elements="*"/>
        <xsl:template match="@*|node()">
            <xsl:copy>
                <xsl:apply-templates select="@*|node()"/>
            </xsl:copy>
        </xsl:template>
        <xsl:template match="//books/book[@type='fiction']">
            <xsl:copy>
                <xsl:apply-templates select="@*"/>
                <xsl:attribute name="id">101</xsl:attribute>
                <xsl:call-template name="emptyCheck">
                    <xsl:with-param name="val" select="year"/>
                    <xsl:with-param name="type" select="@type"/>
                    <xsl:with-param name="copy" select="'true'"/>
                </xsl:call-template>
                <xsl:value-of select="translate(year, ' ', '')"/>
            </xsl:copy>
        </xsl:template>
        <!-- emptyCheck checks if a string is an empty string -->
        <xsl:template name="emptyCheck">
            <xsl:param name="val"/>
            <xsl:param name="type"/>
            <xsl:param name="copy"/>
            <xsl:if test="boolean($copy)">
                <xsl:apply-templates select="node()"/>
            </xsl:if>
            <xsl:if test="string-length($val) = 0 ">
                <exception description="Type {$type} value cannot be empty"/>
            </xsl:if>
        </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>The 'emptyCheck' function works fine, but the space replacing is not working, this is the result after the transform:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <root insertedtime="2008-05-01T14:03:00.000+10:00" pkid="23421">

          <book type="fiction" id="101">
             <author>John Smith</author>
             <title>Book title</title>
             <year>2 0 0 8</year>2008</book>
       </books>
    </root>The spaced year value is still there, the no-space year is added outside the 'year' tags'
    anyone can help me, your help is extremely appreciated!
    Thanks!

    You should add a template for 'year' :<xsl:template match="year">
    <year><xsl:value-of select="translate(.,' ','')"/></year>
    </xsl:template>and remove the translate call in the 'book' template.
    It would be better to add a 'priority' attribute at each template so it would be explicit which template to use because match="@*|node()" could be interpreted by another transform engine as the unique template to be used !

  • K9N2G Neo CPU Stepping question.

    Hello, I have a K9N2G Neo and I am looking to upgrade to a AMD Phenom II X4 925 but I have a couple questions. Will stepping/revision of a CPU effect compatibility?
    I see in the CPU Support that Phenom II X4 925 C2 is supported but would the same CPU but C3 stepping effect weather or not it worked with my motherboard?
    K9N2G Neo CPU Support list - http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1493&maincat_no=1 (HDX925WFK4DGI) Stepping - C2)
    AMD Phenom II X4 925 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103656  (HDX925WFK4DGM) Stepping - C3)
    Sorry if this is common knowledge I haven't been able to find information on it anywhere.
    Thanks for your time.

     Best to ask MSI. http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=html&name=aboutus
     The latest in support list is C2 CPU supported by BIOS 1.2 and that dates back to Jan. 2009.
     Even the list from this website which are usually fairly up to date doesn't show any C3's.
    http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-MSI/K9N2G_Neo_%28MS-7511%29.html
     It probably is supported with latest BIOS but don't take my word for it.

  • Picked up iphone #3, (3rd replacement) question and observation

    Ok, working on iphone #3 (first one had battery issues, second one had display issues).
    Question: Under my system info (call 3001#12345#), my new phone says firware.
    I could have sworn my previous phones said firmware (with the 'm' included).
    Anyone mind checking their phone and seeing what it says ?
    So this new phone has a '7' series LCD, my first one had a 5, the second one was another '7' series.
    Ive noticed that on this new phone, the display is noticably brighter than the second phone I had that was a '7' series. The brightness level at the 1/4 make is eqaul to what the brightness was at the 1/2 mark on the previous phone.
    Pretty weird. Wish they would have gotten these inconsistencies and other things ironed out prior to launch. Two phone replacements in less than a month is ridiculous.

    Yeah i just checked mine and it says firware. and my lcd panel id is 5755136. No clue what any of that means lol

  • IBook G4 Keyboard Replacement Question

    I need to replace the keyboard on my iBook G4 14" 1.42GHz which I bought in Sep 2005.
    However, I can't figure out which replacement keyboards online are compatible.
    The bar code number on the keyboard is KY5322DDTGKA.
    I see sellers saying that their replacement keyboards are compatible with p/n 922-6637, 922-6189, 922-6913, PBF8415 for instance. I can't figure out though if my iBook is compatible with this.
    Can someone give me the correct Apple part number for a replacement keyboard that is compatible with my iBook?
    Thanks

    mac-question:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    iFixit lists Apple part numbers, then says, this keyboard works in all G4 14" iBooks.
    PowerBook Medic also suggests the part is interchangeable.
    PowerBookTech offers these links which you can check out.
    Be sure you call or email and ask questions before you buy, to be sure you are getting the right part.
