CPU running hot

Sorry guys to repost the same topic, but the original thread seems to have gone dead and I'd like to get some more information from you guys before I make another move like trying to RMA hardware. Original post here. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=104304.0
The basics: CPU is running hot. ~60C +/- 3C at idle. I have done the following to try and correct the problem...
1. Replace both stock 37CFM fans with 94.5CFM Thermaltake fans.
2. Rewired the case so that no wires except SATA cables are in the direct path of air from front fan to rear fan.
3. Removed thermal compound from the stock Intel heatsink/fan and applied some Antec Formula 5 thermal compound.
Temps are still in the 60C area at first idle shortly after starting PC.
I just finished playing Quake 4 online for about an hour and temps were approximately 77C when finished.
I cranked both case fans up to 2800 RPMs (according to system information viewer) and opened the case. I even have the front of the case open so that the front fan filter isn't restricting airflow. I have been surfing the web with the case open and fans at full speed for 15 minutes and my temps are between 73C and 75C. The CPU fan is only running about 1400 RPMs.
I am not overclocking.
I am using System Information Viewer v3.19 to monitor fan speed and temps. Core Temp shows similar temp readings.
I am convinced that something is wrong whether or not it is the heat sensors or the CPU I am not for certain, but the heatsink is firmly seated, I am confident in that. I have checked several times. The heatsink is also slightly warm, but no where near hot to the touch. It barely feels warmer than body heat temperature. The computer has never turned off or been unstable. The air coming from the rear fan feels cool to my hand.
What would you guys do in this situation? I am hopelessly lost in trying to figure this out and I would like to get some good data before the return period has expired on my hardware. I have a Zalman 9700 cooler arriving on Friday, but from what I have read on this forum I don't see where the Zalman is going to make the life changing adjustment that it seems that I need. I have pics of the case in the original thread.
Thanks.

Hmm....
Sorry that I never noticed your first posts...
I will try to read them when I get a free min or two ...
I did glance at one of your pictures...
Ummm....
If you are using a matched set of memory they should not be in banks A and B as shown in your pictures...
you should have one in a green slot and another in an orange slot...
This will allow them to run dual channel...
I also noticed that you mentioned checking the seating of the heatsink on the CPU, a "million times"
I know you didn't check it that many times but ...
Checking it more than once or twice, your run the risk of creating air pockets between the cooler and the cpu...
Just so you know ..
Even with the intel cooler (it is a decent cooler) your temps shouldn't be as high as your are experiencing...
I know you are going to groan when I make my suggestion but ..
You need to download the pdf for using artic silver with a dual core Intel processor..
read it... print it .. tattoo it to your chest .. but follow its instructions...
clean the cooler surface, it should be smooth and clean ...
remove the cpu from the motherboard, clean the surface (and make sure there is no plastic film on it from the factory)
put the chip back in its socket and lock it in ...
put the artic silver on the cpu as directed... should be just a small line as shown in the pdf..
mate the cooler to the cpu and lock the cooler in place, click in diagonal opposite corners first, listen for the snaps
You have decent case .. a decent power supply...
Since you have large fans, there shouldn't be a reason for you to run them at high speed...
Reading your posts, all that comes back to me is your high cpu and core temps..
Since your aren't overclocking the only cause for that would be a poor heat transfer between the cooler and the cpu...
So reinstalling your cpu and cooler is the only logical thing to do...
Also, after you move your memory into the correct slots (one in a green slot and one in an orange slot...
go into your bios, make sure your:
FSB is 266
for testing put the the memory speed, timings, and all voltages to their default (or auto) setting then turn the power switch on your power supply to off..
Please ... reinstall your cpu and cooler ...

• CPU running hot and fans maxed out while no programs are running

My 2007 MacBook Pro 3,1 suddenly started running hot (CPU-85°C) and the fans are ramping up to 6000rpm for no apparent reason. Nothing but Firefox running. I just downloaded a new Security update. Is anyone else having these issues? Any fixes out there? Should I be concerned? Thanks.

There are a couple of things to try.
First, I always repair permissions before and after adding anything from Software Update. May be overkill but I've never had any issues with updates on any of the family's eight OSX computers.
Second, are you running any anti-virus software other than ClamXav? Most commercial packages create more Mac trouble than they prevent.
Third, use Activity Monitor (AM) to check for runaway background processes. IMPORTANT: to catch the culprits, you have to change Activity Monitor's default setting of "My Processes" to "All Processes." Otherwise, most of the likely suspects are going to fly under the radar. Also quit any apps you have launched. Click AM's "%CPU" column to sort by how much of the processor each background process is using. Let it run about a minute and observe what shows as the largest users. In either Leopard of Snow Leopard, no background process should show over about 5 percent. If anything is grabbing a lot of cycles, post the process name here and we can help you figure out what it is and how it can be corralled.

• Motherboard/ CPU running hot

My Macbook Pro CPU was running in the 90sC so I took it in...they replaced the logic board..brought it home and now my CPU runs around 60degrees but my motherboard is now running in the 60s as well. Is this a normal temperature for both?

Post over on MacBook Pro forum
And yes they run hot.

• Importing movie into iMovie 8. CPU runs hot but fan didn't kick in

I was importing a movie into iMove 8.0.6 the other day. I hardly use iMovie but I know that in general when a computer render videos the CPU can hot pretty fast. I was expecting the fan kicks on pretty soon but after 5-6 minutes into a 10 minutes project I have yet to heard the fan. I opened up iStat Pro and was shocked to see the CPU was up at mid 90s and the fan was hovering around 2500RPM. It ran up to 3000ish RPM when the movie was done.
I'm wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this before. I know the fan is working fine before I was just watching some online videos and the fan is already up at 3100 when the CPU sitting at 80C.

Can you open the file in QuickTime Player?
If so, click Window/Inspector, and tell us what video and audio codecs are listed by "format:".
If the audio and video formats look ok, then I would check for chapter tracks, closed captioning tracks, etc. Extra tracks would make the movie uneditable in iMovie.

• (SOLVED) CPU running hot shuts down

Dear Archers
After some recent kernel upgrades, I feel subject problem has started. Has any body faced such similar issues?
Any solution?
Motherboard trouble. One who repaired was not ready to divulge what the problem was. Thanks to all

How hot ?
CPU case temperature may approach 100C
Is there a heatsink?
Heat sink temperatures may exceed 80C
Is there I fan? Is it running?
Laptop? Desktop?
How long can you hold your hand on the heat sink?
If you wet your finger, does it sizzle when you touch the CPU?
Some cooling systems have airflow sensors that initiate shutdown in the event it seems "open loop", even though the processor may not really be over heated.
Suggestions to solve this problem are appreciated
A much better statement of the problem will help.

• CPU runs hot after Snow Leopard upgrade

I upgraded to SL last weekend and noticed the next day that the fans were constantly running really loud. After extensive research (there are some other threads about this, but no solutions) and troublshooting, here's what I've learned:
- It's not related to Spotlight indexing, as the problem continues after indexing is complete
- PMC and PRAM resets don't fix the problem
- Activity Monitor shows a process in the root called "ptmd" (platform thermal monitor daemon) consuming over half of my CPU. Killing the process resolves the issue, and the system still seems stable, but I don't know what it is, why it's running, and if it's really ok to kill it. I've read that some computers run it at startup and then automatically kill it, and others constantly run it. But I don't know which category my computer falls under. Either way, I've never had to kill it before upgrading to 10.6 and shouldn't have to kill it after every restart now.
- iStat shows my CPU getting to around 80°C+, and my fan running at 6000rpm+. Once I kill ptmd, the CPU temp will gradually drop below 50°C and the fan drops to under 2K rpm.
I don't remember if the problem started right after the upgrade or only after running software updates in Snow Leopard... But I started fresh -- I erased my HD and installed SL fresh. No problem until I ran the 10.6.3 combo software update, then the ptmd problem came back. I've since done another fresh install and am doing a step-by-step software update. I have 10.6.1 installed with no trouble, even after a restart. I'm currently downloading 10.6.2, which I expect will introduce the issue again, based on the fact that that's where people started having problems in the forums that I've read. I suppose I could just find the most recent "safe" version (probably 10.6.1) and stick with that one, but I would like to make sure that the other important updates are installed. Has anyone else heard of this? Is there anything else I can try?
A secondary concern is that I only ran a Time Machine backup after installing 10.6.3 (I know, stupid to not backup before the upgrade). If I restore my backup with Migration Assistant, am I going to just re-introduce the problem on my computer?

According to the man page for ptmd, the ptmd daemon "relays to hardware any OS notifications effecting thermal conditions." IOW, it is just the messenger sending messages from the OS to the hardware. If it is using a lot of CPU time, the OS apparently very frequently thinks thermal conditions are changing & that the hardware should know about it. Thus, high ptmd activity would seem more a symptom than a cause.
Also, while my MacBook is a 4,1 model & not a 2,1 one like yours, the ptmd process terminates after startup, so assuming they are sufficiently similar in terms of thermal management it may be that whatever is failing to tell the process on your MB to terminate after startup is part of the culprit.
This is unlikely anything in 10.6.3 -- on all my Macs, the modification date of the /usr/libexec/ptmd file suggests that it has not been changed since 10.6.2. In fact, it is unlikely anything in any Snow Leopard update, since most users do not have this problem, regardless of model or 10.6 version.
I realize you said you did a fresh install & the problem disappeared, but for this kind of test to be definitive, you cannot allow any preexisting file that might have an adverse effect on system operation to remain active. Unfortunately, there are many types of files that can do this. Sometimes these files affect nothing besides the update process itself, making it seem as if the update is the cause when it actually is an effect.
Since there are so many kinds of files that can have adverse effects, it can be difficult to identify the offending one without first doing some diagnostic detective work to determine where it might be lurking in your Mac. A good way to start is to start up in Safe Mode, which loads only essential system components (see Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? for more about this). If the Mac doesn't heat up in Safe Mode, then you know one of the non-essential items is the cause.
You can determine if the problem file is in the user or system domain by creating a new, temporary user account. If automatic login is enabled, temporarily disable it -- it is important for this test that you log into this account for the first time immediately after restarting the Mac, before logging into any other account. If the Mac doesn't overheat now, then you know the problem is somewhere in the normal user account's home folder.
If you are willing, try these tests & let us know your results. That will make it much easier to suggest where the offending file might be & what to do about it.

• CPU Running *HOT*HOT*HOT*

Hello all! I just purchased an 865PE Neo3-F MB with a P4 520 LGA775 processor. The CPU came as a retail package so I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, there is a problem with the MB or a problem with the CPU (most likely the first of the list:)
Anyway, the CPU temp starts off in the low 60's (degrees C that is) and rises from there until the computer powers down. I've never seen this before with any of my computers, though I've never owned a P4. The heat sync came with thermal paste already laid out over the copper base so I just installed the CPU then the heat sync on the MB and figured all was good. It does seem that the CPU and heat sync are making contact because there is a layer of thermal paste residue on the CPU when I remove the heat sync. Could there possibly be a BIOS issue?
Thanks in advance!
Peace:)
-dan

Uh, you need to re-apply thermal interface material, TIM, if you remove a heatsink. Clean the heatsink and the Integrated Heatsink Spreader, IHS, of the CPU before applying new thermal paste or grease. I recommend Artic Silver 5 as a TIM. Apply it according to the instructions on Artic Silver's website.

• High CPU usage - Rapid Battery Drain - Running HOT

Looking for help.. PLEASE!
Z10 - Model STL100-3 Software release 10.2.1.2179
Symptoms;
Occasionally, and for no apparent reason, I notice my Z10 getting hot in my pocket. I run the device monitor App and see a very high CPU usage, which consequently drains the batter very quickly.
I've tried all the solutions from every support group thread and blog. And I mean ALL!
Pulling the battery
Replaced the battery
Removed the SIM
Deleted G Mail
Removed all 3rd party Apps (2)
Stopped email sync
Stopped calendar sync
Turned off all radio
Turned Off Wi-Fi
Let it sit for hours, even days to let it finish doing whatever its trying to do
Etc Etc Etc.
Finally, I called BB support, they wanted $50 to talk to someone. I told them the issue, they said the device is bad and must be replaced. I said its software related!! They said.. no, its a hardware issue. Device is under warranty and they want me to just go get a new one. I don't want a new one, I want a fix! Stop the waste of BB $
Temporary solution
Eventually, I decided I would do a restore, back to the factory settings, and here's when I found something
I run BB Link, connect the device, do a back-up... and LOW AND BEHOLD.. this fixes the high CPU usage and the device runs great, very cool, low cpu and extremely long battery life.
Sadly! .. this problem reoccurs, after a few days, sometimes after a couple of weeks and just out of the blue.
I can force this fault to occur, simply by doing a restart of the device. Sure enough, it will run hot, use all the cpu and I will have to do a back-up to get it to settle down again. I've tried to wait for the so called 'indexing' to finish, but it never stops running with high cpu and doesn't help.
Can any one tell me whats happening and how to make this a permanent fix?
There are hundreds if not thousands of people having very similar issues, and many different methods to fix it. Its my belief that there is an underlying bigger problem that relates to all these differing fixes, but as yet.. I cant find it and none of these fixes work for me. For now... I will keep doing the occasional back-up and hope I get a response that can help.
Thanks to all that read this.

The heat may be normal. After a little water damage incident, which I repaired, I disassembled my Z10 the find a small heat sink will thermal compound. This helps dissipate heat efficiently. I found a large number of air bubbles and possibly a large air pocket by the way the paste stuck to both sides. I removed the old paste and replaced it with artic silver paste and the z10 has been much much cooler. It use to run about 105*f and now it is around 85*f.
See this thread I posted for before and after pictures using a thermal imager.

@Curve8530 .....as much a s your discovery is appreciated, I hardly believe that most people will actually dismantle their phone to remove the paste and replace with arctic silver. Besides, what you are doing is not a fix for the actual problem....
In most cases, this heat is associated with apps using the CPU resources beyond the normal limits.
As an easy fix, finding and removing the app(s) in question followed by a reboot, solves the issue. In some cases an OS reload is necessary.... but under no circumstances I would even remotely suggest to any member to dismantle their phone and do what you did...

• Imac 27 runs hot as ****, won't sleep, and cpu runs wild in w7

I have been having audio issues with the imac 27. plugging headphones or speakers causes cpu to run crazy, the mic in the triband trrs jack does not work, and the imac runs hot, and will not go into power saver mode.
When I came in I found my nephew who was listening to some music on the imac, and I felt the back top of the imac and it was hot as ****. I almost burned my hand. I realized then that he had plugged his headphones in.
Unplugging the headphones or speakers can solve some of these problems.
But, this is not an acceptable fix.
Please contact Apple and urge them to fix these sound card issues.
If anyone does not have these problems in w7 with the imac 27 even after the latest bootcamp and imac updates, let us know right here. I think this affects every one of the late 2009 imacs and maybe some earlier ones too running windows 7.
Here's the post I recently ran on the headphone jack issue.
Not only does the cpu run crazy but the imac 27 gets very, very hot. Since I unplugged the headphones, it runs much, much cooler.
Certainly, some Mac engineers should take care of this problem, it seems it is universal on all the imac 27's and from what I gather, the smaller screened cousins too.
Also, we certainly want a stereo mix option for audio in or out, or what is called "what you hear" or wave out. Imac is supposed to be much geared to multimedia apps.
Finally, the mic jack part of the trrs set up MUST be fixed! A lot of manufacturers are going to headset combo jacks as they call them, mic in and stereo out on the same tribanded plug. But, the old single jack for mic in and single jack for stereo out are two tiny parts of the hardware and super inexpensive for the manufacturer. Why in the **** to go to the "advanced" triplug if the **** thing doesn't work.
Mac has a great reputation. I hope they remedy these problems right away.
Anyone whose imac 27 or 24 whose headset plug is working correctly. Let us know! I don't think anyone's is, but I think that few people understand that their cpu is running so much faster with the plug in, plus few even understand the combo jack and the triband, or trrs audio jack! Out of 4 audio technicians I talked to, not one of them knew what a trrs jack was or that you even have a mic in jack as part of the headset jack!
When I told one senior that it worked on the Mac side, he didn't believe for a while, thought my sound might be recorded from the onboard mic, but I proved it to him by tapping iaudibly on my iphone mic headset and and it showing up in garage band clearly and listening to big difference in audio.
As for a usb audio adapter, I am in a neon light environment and find that those adapters are more sensitive to electrical interference. Besides I want to use the headset jack as it was meant to be used!
Thats it.
Again, if anyone using an imac 27 and windows 7 64 or 32 doesnt have these problems, let us know! We are all anxious for a fix!
Best to all!

Yes, I have been dealing with this problem since early January. I just can't believe that apple would not have the necessary driver for the sound card in the Imac 27! That's like trying to run a race and not bothering to tie your shoes! How can they not have something as basic as the sound connections working???
I was encouraged to buy a top of the line imac 27 because Apple had told us that bootcamp would enable Windows users to use the machine just as if it were a native windows machine, then they don't give us the **** drivers to use the trrs mic jack. And you can't use the external speakers without the cpu going wild and heating up like a pot bellied stove.
This is really disheartening and now I am really thinking I made a big mistake. I wouldn't mind migrating to Mac gradually, but I have lot of scientific and other programs that require windows. At this rate there will be thousands of other mac buyers who will never make the same mistake again.
As you can see I am quite angry about this, and getting more angry with each day Apple ignores every imac purchaser who expected to use Windows on the machine! Is the software for a sound card driver that difficult?
Having a computer which doesn't have sound that works correctly, is like having a car without seat, you can still drive it but isn't very **** comfortable.

• Safari webpage preview fetcher high CPU usage, runs hot Macbook Pro, fan

Even when turned off in Safari Preferences, safari webpage preview fetcher starts up and starts using high CPU % (99.8% when checked on Activity Monitor!). Macbook starts running hot, fan starts running on high. You can force quit safari webpage preview fetcher in Activity Monitor, but it starts itself back up again!

Well, I disabled safari webpage preview in preferences, and rebooted, zapping the pram and it hasn't restarted, and I haven't had the high fan / hot running so yay!

• Help Kernel_task eating CPU and MBP running hot since 10.6.3

Hi Guys,
Need some real help here. My laptop has become almost unusable here because the CPU goes up to 100% and the culprit is kernel_task.
Ive noticed it slightly after installing 10.6.3. CPU runs up to 108c degrees Celsius.
Ive tried reseting PRAM
Ive tried reinstalling OS with a time machine backup
Getting very annoyed. Is there anything I can try?

I tried a reset SMC and a reboot afterwards. However that did not resolve the problem.
Havent really been hearing the fans lately. CPU is 79C celcius.
As i said in my post previously, it is the kernel_task process that is using up the majority of the CPU.

My desktop HP Pavilion E9120F began to run hot, fan was coming on very slow, I cleaned really good, was a bit dusty.. I think this may have caused the problem. It is not running at 90 degrees farenheit. I replaced the video card so I could run video programs thinking that would fix it, didn't. I am wondering do I need to buy a new fan to keep the temp down or is my CPU damaged and can't be fixed? I can still run my programs but CPU gets to 100% and it never gets under 78 degrees. Help I don't know if I should just buy new fans or what?

• Mid 2013 macbook air: battery drain / running hot

Hi there,
For the last couple weeks my MBA starts to run hot and drain battery fast if I've been using it for a few hours.
I use it a lot on most days and connect to powercord only once it drops down low, like below 20%.
Have just seen other posts who recommend doing that at 50% battery and will now do the same.
However my question is: have i ruined my battery in the meantime?
AND/OR is there something else i can do to get battery running like it used to, and stop the loud fan switching on all the time because it's all running too hot?
I've copied in an etrecheck in case that helps diagnose more....
thanks heaps for any help!

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

• MBP running hot, full fans and sluggish with both Safari and Firefox

Hi guya,
Im having problems with my kate 2007 MBP.
Im sure lately it seems to be running slower and slower and more and more sluggish - I was hoping my Mac wouldn't be subject to "slowdown" like every PC ive ever owned has.
The biggest problem is that if i use either Safari or Firefox to browse the web, they quickly start using 80-100% of my processor causing everything else to run sluggish, the computer to get hot, processors to run up to 90 degrees and fans on full.
Perhaps i multitask more than some people - I can tend ot have a lot of tabs open in Firefox, but sometimes Safari or Firefox show this behaviour with just one tab open.
I do multitask by having about 8 programs open at once and I jump from job to job, but in its early life the MBP used to deal with this - now i feel that i type faster than writing appears on screen, i have to wait ages to work in programs like indesign, and forget trying to run a game like The Sims...
Does everyone else have the 100% processor problems with Safari (and yes im on version 4, and the latest version of firefox too) the only browser which doesn't give me these problems is Opera - I can have many tabs open and it uses very little CPU, I just dont like use Opera as much as Firefox which is my browser of choice.
But why would my OSX run differently to anyone elses? Is there a problem with my Macbook, is there a problem with OSX (does it need installing again?) Is it just time for me to buy a new Macbook Pro - or if I run firefox on that will i get the same problem? Ive got nearly 30gb of spare HD space and maxed it out with 4gb of Ram - so neither of those are causing a problem either...
Any input would be great...

Have you tried restarting the comp? Sometimes a simple refresh will cure the sluggishness.
Try running repair permissions from your HD and afterwards run +repair disk+ from your software install DVD.
Regarding your comp running hot, make sure it is properly ventilated while in use. The MBP is not a laptop. According to the user manual it states in part:
+"Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings."+

• Dead USB port running hot

I have a mid-2010 white unibody MacBook. It's been running fine, with the exception of a problem with the dashboard after the most recent firmware upgrade about a year ago. I just learned to work around it. But then Friday I got an error saying the the USB port was drawing too much power and was shut down. Sudden and random, as it had never happened before and showed up as I woke it up from screensaver mode. Nothing was plugged in. I have a Magic Trackpad and a Logitech keyboard connected via Bluetooth. Disconnecting them doesn't affect the error. I've tried rebooting and resetting PRAM & SMC. I'm trying to reinstall Lion, but I don't think it's a clean or fresh install. Has anyone encountered a USB port that dies but runs hot? The CPU seems to run a lot warmer than usual, buy about 20° F.
Any help is appreciated!

Take a look at this discussion:

I recommend you make an appointment at an Apple genius bar and take the Mac in for a free diagnosis.
