CPU speed and hyperthreading

Dear All,
I would like to ask is there any deeper differences between for example an Xeon E3-1220V2 3.1GHz and Xeon Quad-Core X5450 3GHz in virtualizing?
Because these cpus have high differencies in the price, and as I try to plan the required horsepower those seem the same the point of view of MHz.
As I know the normalized speed is CPUcore x CPUfrequencies so the above two cpus have near the same normalized speed (4core x ~3Ghz)?
Also I would like to ask whether the hyperthreading relevant to the vCPU calculating? Because the HT can improve performance 30% only certain situation.
So I totally ignored HT capability in my calculating, however it seems 'doubles' the cpu.
I'm calculating based on the normalized form: I have a xeon 4core 3GHz CPU in the old hardware so I have a grand total 4corex3000Mhz=12000MHz. I also measured that the OS using a total CPUpeak 60% CPU, while avg total 2%!!! .  So it seems the old system only use 12000x0.6=7200MHz at the peak load. Because of this I should have at least this 7200MHz in the new virtual system (and it can be a cpu with 2 cores 7200/2=3600MHz or a 6 cores 7200/6=1200MHz) and I sucessed in keep the CPU power. And HT is totally forgotten in this logic conclusion. Could you please confirm is this correct, or I made a big mistake somewhere?
Thank you very much

Thank you for your answer, however the two cpus were only examples. The question is without the architectural differencies (bus type, fsb, cache) and other capabilities, there is no difference between cpu-s in virtualization point of view if the normalized speed is the same? So there are cores and frequencies and multiply that two parameteres to compute the normalized speed is enough to compare the cpus (roughly), is it right? Or is there something other parameter (for example HT) which has high importance, and therefore I can change the calculation formula when choose CPU?
So in one word the above mentioned exapmle with the 7200MHz is correct roughly speaking?
Then in the next step I have to care the little pieces of puzzle, including that you answered (thank you) the HT and other EPT capabilities, cache size etc...

i have a web project requirement that needs to detect the client's cpu speed and memory and diplays it on the webpage. could i do this in java applet? can someone direct to the right resources on how i would be able to do this.
    thank u so much!

Aside from the System.capabilities class, I don't believe you
    can get
anything more without using one of the wrappers like

  • How to get statistics (or precise data) about cpu speed and RAM

My problem is I want to determine the CPU speed of the computer is running the applet.
I know there's no way to obtain in a simply (and standar) way this property, so I've thinked about generating statistic methods for do it (something like executing a loop a defined iterations)
My doubt is what to put inside this loop, beacuse I would like to know just not CPU speed (or satistics about it), I need also free RAM statistics, so I've thinked there would be some specific java instructions to give a relationship of these data I need.
My question is if someone has done (or has thinked about) this kind of classes before me, and can tell me what is the best way to make the same.

  • VIA KM4M-V motherboard CPU speed and AGP problem

Hello. Please be patient I am not technical I would say I'm intermediate, so please if anyone is kind enough to help, please don't blind me with jargon! I have 2 problems I believe are motherboard related, I shall go thru them both. Any solutions/suggestions will be very gratefully received! Operating system is Win XP Pro SP 2 running 512 MB RAM (64 used at moment for onboard graphics)
I purchased this mother board: VIA KM4M-V. I also purchased an AMD Sempron PR2600+ which should be showing a speed of 1833 Mhz, but is coming up as 1466 MHz. Does anybody have any info please? I have downloaded and installed all the latest deivers and BIOS for the motherboard, and the MSI live monitor says there are no new updates now. Is there something in BIOS I need to change? Or is this a mistake on the manufactuers part? If so, which one? LOL
2nd problem: The onboards graphics weren't good enough for some games I had - it required an AGP card. So I have purchased an ATI Radeon 9550 256 MB AGP card. OK I installed this card. All OK starting up. installed drivers, restarted computer. Was OK then changed to 32 bit colour and change the resolution of screen. When I clicked apply went into energy saving mode. Rebooted. As soon as it went to boot into windows, the monitor went into energy saving mode. Once it didn't straight away and windows started then the screen went distorted then it went into energy saving mode. I went into safe mode uninstalled the graphics hardware booted into windows again and reinstalled looked OK then I rebooted and it did it again grrrrrrrrr I went and disabled onboard graphics (ATI said might be issue on their site) still won't boot. Something I am doing wrong? Is it the motherboard?
I'm thinking that it is both botherboard ::koff:: I mean motherboard It's OK I mean it's better than what I had, but I know it's not what it should be! I am grateful to you guys for your help. Thanks very much

More on this! I am running win xp pro sp 2 BTW. I have been swapping between the onboard graphics and the ATI radeon 9550 AGP card I just got. I have been disabling onboard graphics, then installing from scratch (all virus and programs off). As to power supply/amperes? I have no idea all I know is it's a 450 watt rating and has ummmm 230 on back (volts?) it's pretty new I got it like 5 months ago
OK I can get it sort of working when I go into the BIOS and set it from 8x to 4x. The graphics advanced setting was showing 4x. The motherboard is SUPPOSED to support 8x but it just won't work at all in that mode. It works for awhile in 4x mode. No specific amount of time I have current drivers on everything! Then the same old thing happens! Monitor goes to energy saving mode or computer restarts. On restart can use it again for a limited time again, and then the mouse pointer kinda goes funny and it freezes. It goes pixalated and if I move it this 'block' goes up and down in a line only. Most of the time has been trying to start AOL (my ISP)  it goes off then. Have tried different rates (went down to 16 bit) and desktop sizes (went down to the one above 800x600) no go. I took the refresh rates to 60, tried everything. I have taken it out again.
I don't know if it a motherboard problem, the graphics card or a combo! I just paid £54.99 for the graphics card, and don't want to waste it! What should I do. It's really frustrating!

  • Weired voltage cpu temp and fan speed readings

Built this system last week when i install core center I get no 3.3 v readings. cpu temp plays between 18c to 60c and the fan speed from 800 t0 6000rpm. Check in the bios all voltage readings are fine but cpu temp and fan readins can be way off. Also installed lastest versions of mbm and get the same results. Flashed bios to latest version also. Cool and quiet is not activated. Weired thing everything runs fine.                                                                                                                  motherboard k8t neo2                                                                                      cpu amd 64 3500                                                                                              memory corsair 3200LL 1024                                                                            video card BFG 6800gt                                                                                       sound Audigy 2                                                                                                  hard drive   WD 120 sata                                                                                    liteon dvd rom and cd-r                                                                                      power supply Antec 480watt neo power                                                               Everything is at stock speeds with all latest drivers and xp sp2. Well sorry to say I solved the problem for good. Contacted MSI support. Only answer I got was Maybe the board was bad. Got it exchanged from the store and got an Asus av8 deluxe rev.2 instead. Everything runs fine. It was my first MSI board and sad to say it gave me a lot of headaches and configeration problems. The new setup ran great on the first try. Don't  think I will buy MSI again in the near future.

  • First Backup on Time Machine - CPU temperature and fan speed

I attached my external WD drive and started Time Machine. Works just fine however I watched the cpu and temp and fan speed as reported by iStat.
During the hour long "first backup" I reached an incredible 160 degrees cpu temp and 6000 rpm fan speed. Cpu was 70 percent or so. When this temp was reached it looked like some limiter took over to reduce cpu consumption and temp. CPU dropped to 30 percent and the temp came down. Fan rpms reduced as temp did.
I don't know if iStat reports the feeds on a MacBook Air properly or not but if so......interesting.

160F is not very high - 160C would be a different matter.
Under sustained 100% load, my Macbook CPU is at about 190F, with the fan at about 6200 rpm, in a room at about 68F.

  • Satellite C855 - Average CPU temperature and fan speed

    Hello!
I've had this toshiba Satellite C855 since march this year. it's only recently that the CPU temp and Fan speeds have been worrying me.
When I'm not playing games or doing a livestream my CPU temp stays around 35-40% with the fanspeed at steady 50% or not on at all due to it been cool.
When I do play games however the fanspeed is going up to around 66-68% with the CPU been around 55-60%
I was wondering if this is normal? or do I need to clean it out by taking it apart. if it is the second option then I am worried since I do not want to damage anything inside. plus I am not that great with the inner workings of a computer.
Any help or information would be very appreciated thanks.

In my opinion there is no reason for panic. T is logic that under stress CPU activity is higher and CPU produces more heat. Notebook must be cooled down properly so sensors that control cooling fans register growing temperature and cooling fans will run on higher speed.
There is no reason for cleaning. And one day if that must be done please dont do it alone. You are not authorized for doing this.

  • CPU Temp and Fan Speed

    Hi
According to SMC Fan Control and iStat my CPU is running at 74C currently and often 90C under light load with associated fan speed of 6200 rpm. I have checked activity monitor and very little load on CPU jsut safari and Activity Monitor have any significant usage ( 10% ish). Is this a 'normal' CPU temp and if not are there any ways to check cooling or in crease cooling, ultimately to keep the fan low and noise down, battery life up??
    many thanks

    thanks for the response.
'All processes' is selected - showing 50-70% CPU idle. MacBook has good ventilation, sitting on a hard table. I upgraded the HD a while ago, to a 7200 rpm 320GB unit, would this make a difference?

but the system temp is shown correctly (21°C/69°F (when i just started the system))

    Hello!
It has been heard of before, yes, but your board is rather new so I don't think it has had an issue yet.
There is normally a sensor on the processor. If it does on your processor I can't say. If there isn't a sensor on the processor, or if it is covered with thermal grease, or otherwise damaged, BIOS and all programs that read BIOS data will be wrong.
Bit off: I'm speculating in that HSF, and I wonder how good and quiet it is. Been recommended by a store nearby.

  • USB/FireWire usage increases CPU temp and fan speed

    Hi,
I'm curious, does the usage of USB and FireWire ports increase CPU temperature and fan speed...?
I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface plugged in and whenever I play any songs from iTunes using that interface as an output, my CPU temp increased and fan speed jumped from 2000 to 3300 rpm. And on separate occasion, an 8GB of file transfer from an external FireWire-based HDD had both fans speed up to 4,400 rpm.
Is this normal...? All these were done with an external display plugged onto the MBP with "clamshell" mode.

USB operations involves quite a bit of CPU action, Elphidieus.
Firewire places less demand on the CPU but, in a situation like the one you describe can involve both increases in power usage and in HD temperatures.
The fan speeds on Macs are not simply responsive to CPU usage. Both HD temps and power usage can also play a part in the equation that ultimately produces the fan speed. As HDs have much lower heat tolerance than CPUs you will find that it is quite common to see the fans ramp up when doing a large file transfer over FW (or USB, for that matter) , especially if the internal HD temp gets to over about 50-55º Celsius.
    Cheers

  • White Macbook 2006 random shutdown solved removed cpu heatsink and more

I picked up a cheap macbook from a secondhand retailer for $300 and it regularly shutdown, froze, restarted as well as the grey kernel panic screen completely random no real pattern. I set about trying to solve the problem swapping ram and hard drive with my identical 2006 macbook (which I had similar problems with last year, fixed that one with a new battery connector cable). The ram and hard drive made no difference so I downloaded istat menus to see if any combination of cpu voltage, current and temperature were causing the random shutdowns. It seemed when the temperature reached certain values the computer would shutdown or freeze(around 30 to 50 degrees). I'd read on other forums about faulty cpu temperature diodes so I reapplied heatsink compound to the cpu heatsink and checked all the wiring for shorts but nothing seemed to solve the problem. I was ready to retire the computer and use it for spares for my other macbook when needed but I pulled the keyboard off one more time and tried something completely radical. This fix requires some forward planning and software installation but it has completely solved my Random shutdowns completely.
for instructions see my next post *Fix for random shutdowns white macbook*

Ok this is not for the non technical person but it is quite a simple process with the right instructions.
This first step is very important install the software coolbook($10) and fan control (Free)( not smc fan control). Set up coolbook to operate the cpu at the lowest speed and voltage for both power adapter and battery(1002MHz and .95Volts). Remove the keyboard to access the computer logic board (instructions can be found at iFixit). Remove the four screws and two connectors holding the heatsink to the logicboard and gently lift the heatsink out (very important that you leave the fan screwed in and connected). Close the computer back up if you wish to test just gently connect the keyboard and loosly sit the keyboard back in. Restart and reset the pram immediately. Let the computer boot up and then open system preferences and configure Fan Control to your liking. So far no random shutdowns for over a week (was getting many a day previously.

  • Memory speed and graphic card slot

    Hi,
I have just built a system with a P67A-GD65 B3 board, everything works fine, but while double-checking on the system's specs and performances I came across two weird issues:
    - I have 2 x G-Skill F3-17000CL7-2GBXHD RAM sticks at 2133MHz, I have enabled XMP in the BIOS (with leaving all other settings in automatic mode) and the BIOS indicates the RAM is running at 2133MHz, 7-10-7-27, however, when I run the MSI Control Center (latest version of the app) it says on the home screen of this app that my RAM is detected as "DDR3-1600 (800MHz)" in the speed field. I also ran CPU-Z and it says there that my DRAM frequency is 1064.4 MHz (the FSB:DRAM value is "1:8"), with the 7-10-7-27 timings values. Which one should I believe? The WEI gives a score of 7.9 for my memory which is ok, and I am not running in any performance issue nor I am looking to do any overclocking, but I just want to make sure that I am making the best out of my money and that I am using the RAM as it is supposed to be used... Can someone shed some light here?
    - I have installed my graphic car on the slot that is the furthest possible from the CPU as I believe they both generate quite some heat and so they should be as far away as possible from eachother. In CPU-Z I have a link width for the graphic interface of "x8" with max supported of "x16". Is this something that is related to the slot and should I move the card to the slot closer to the CPU? Or is this something else? Is there a setting in the BIOS maybe that can address this?
    Thanks!

Both are correct information. The detected '1600MHz' is actually the factory stock speed from the IC chip of the RAMs. The readings of "1064.4MHz" is the running speed that the RAM is currently on so for DDR calculation, you have to multiple 1064.4MHz by 2 to get 2133MHz.
The reasons for 2 readings to be detected is due to your RAM being factory overclocked by manufacturer before it went on the retail shelves, which is very common. Most or any RAMs that you see with speed above 1600MHz are generally overclocked by manufacturer using 1600MHz RAMs for speed boost.
The graphics card slot will still runs at x16 with your card.

i look for and i find : cpu-z indicates 200mhz for the fsb and 4x for the multiplier
the same thing when i launch corecenter
    please help me

ok you're right  i restore the correct frequency
thank you thank you thank you
but it's nevertheless strange my multiplier moved from 4x to 9x on account of cool and quiet
